Lee Woodruff is a media trainer and communications coach who works with clients in all industries and walks of life, from the CEOs of Fortune 100 companies to philanthropists and authors. What I absolutely enjoyed about this conversation, besides getting to talk about my chosen profession of comms, is the precision with which Lee gives advice. How to prepare, how to deliver an intentional pause. With that clarity and confidence it's no fluke why some of the biggest names and business leaders trust Lee with one of the most important and vulnerable practices in life, how we present ourselves to others. But the most important takeaway, what I have learned may be a universal key for successful people, a thing Lee absolutely embodies, is the willingness to give a complete stranger their undivided attention and be locked into that moment. It's powerful.

Nick And Simon talk about the Jazz Novel Blow up a storm published in 1959 [ a seminal year in Jazz history]This is a first novel by the director, producer and dramatist, Garson Kanin, whose short stories have appeared in Esquire, Vogue and the Atlantic Monthly. Written in the first person and told in flashback this is a dramatist's recollections of his early days in jazz -- during the depression and the close of prohibition. While in Chicago, on tour with his actress wife, the narrator receives a phone call from a forgotten Lee Woodruff which brings back a flood of impressions and memories of their small combo shaped and led by Woody. Through a haze of half remembered incidents he recalls the growth of their trio into a sextet, the men who gave the group impetus and the women who were tenuously involved with the band. Woodruff, now an emotional wreck, unable to play, in and out of hospitals, insists upon unburdening himself to the narrator and attempts to explain the eventual failure of their group.Kanin's best-remembered for his screenplays, however, which were written in collaboration with his wife, actress Ruth Gordon, whom he married in 1942. Together, they wrote many screenplays, including six that were directed by George Cukor. These included the Spencer Tracy - Katharine Hepburn film comedies Adam's Rib (1949) and Pat and Mike (1952), as well as A Double Life (1947), starring Ronald Colman. This is our website This is our InstagramThis is our Facebook group

In 2006 Lee Woodruff got the phone call that no wife ever wants to get. Her husband Bob, then the co-anchor of ABC World News Tonight, had been his by a roadside bomb in Iraq. In the explosion of rocks and metal, Bob was critically injured, sustaining shrapnel wounds to the head.He was evacuated to Bethesda Maryland where he was put into a medically induced coma for five weeks to allow his brain to heal. Bob and Lee had already been together for a long time, they had four young kids and Lee had no idea what their life would look like moving forward. Lee recounts her love story and their family's journey beautifully in her New York Times bestseller In an Instant, but I have to say that there was nothing like hearing both Bob and Lee tell their story together in this interview. This is a story about the unexpected, both the unexpected tragedies that upend our lives, but also the unexpected joy that we find in the aftermath of those tragedies. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Bob Woodruff Foundation's mission is to assist injured service members and their families heal from the wounds of war. In 2006, Lee's husband Bob Woodruff, television journalist with ABC News, was imbedded with troops in Iraq when the tank they were driving in hit an IED - improvised explosive device - and Bob suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. While Bob was in a medically-induced coma for 38 days, Lee witnessed many severely injured soldiers that received excellent medical care but did not have the privilege of having family members close by for support. She vowed then that if her Bob recovered, she would do everything in her power to make things better for injured service members and their families. The Bob Woodruff Foundation is a Guidestar 5-Star Charity, and celebrates 15 years of compassionate caring for wounded heroes and their families; raising and distributing over $70 million for innovative, evidence-based programming for wounded veterans and their families, including VIVA, a special program that helps provide funding for wounded veteran families to undergo fertility treatments. Responsive to the needs of veteran families, the Bob Woodruff Foundation traditionally has funded caregiver support, rehabilitation, and emotional support programs. As a result of the COVID pandemic, the most desperate issue now facing veterans and their families is food insecurity, so the Foundation's efforts are currently focused on addressing that critical need. Please keep our heroes and their families in mind and support your local food pantries. Before the pandemic, our guest Lara Garey had family members and clinicians coming in and out of her home every day to assist in providing care for her husband Tom, a veteran of the Air Force who lives with ALS. Once quarantine restrictions began, all of that that help stopped -- until recently.  This week, hear from Lara about her caregiving journey. We’ll also learn about the Respite Relief Program, a free benefit for military and veteran caregivers from caregiving advocate Lee Woodruff, co-founder of the Bob Woodruff Foundation. Lastly, we’ll discuss the financial side of caregiving with AARP Financial Ambassador Jean Chatzky.  For more information:  Financial Workbook for Veteran and Military Caregivers  Financial Workbook for Family Caregivers   Hidden Heros Respite Care  AARP Resources for Family Caregiving  AARP Resources for Veterans, Military and their Families

After decades of preparation, Bob Woodruff was offered his dream job: the anchor chair at ABC World News Tonight. But less than two months later he was hit by a bomb in Iraq, incurred massive head trauma, and spent 36 days in a coma fighting for his life. When he finally woke up, the famous journalist with a photographic memory could no longer remember the names of his four young children. While Bob eventually regained many of his physical and cognitive abilities, his life and career were forever changed. In this candid and life-affirming conversation, Bob shares his perspective on invisible wounds, unexpected gifts and the joy of rediscovered purpose.    In Today’s Episode:   Bob starts his dream job: co anchoring World News Tonight and leaves to report on the war in Iraq (7:40) The moment he was hit by a roadside bomb (12:40) Unaware if he is alive or dead  (13:00) What physically happens to your body and head when you are blasted by a bomb (21:40) Are there any stories worth dying for?  (39:10)   Wise Words:   (On Peter Jennings) “He’s the guy that I really wanted to emulate; I think I wanted to be like Peter.” (6:50) “It was never the 36 days that the ones that were painful, it was the years afterwards, certainly the months after.” (19:50) “Once that miracle of survival kinda starts to sweep away, you realize that your life is gonna be completely different and you have to make this transition. (25:10) “You’ve got this gigantic world that you have to find your spot in, you know, your direction in, and that’s a shocking change, and I think that’s the blackness.  I think the blackness that everybody that’s gone through this, goes through.” Now you’ve gotta figure out what you’re gonna be and what you’re gonna do.” (25:55) “I realized that one of the reasons of religion is, I think, to give you comfort about where you’ve gonna spend most of your existence, and I think I had a realization that this is exactly what’s out there.  And you can have all sorts of thoughts about what’s written in the various books and it’s got detains in it that some either believe or don’t believe, but if you really think about it, whoever the prophets may be, what they’re really trying to tell you is that it’s gonna be nice when you go.”  (27:28) “There’s nothing better than friends, you know?  The ones that truly are your friends are the ones that stick with you when you go through suffering, and so those I still have.” (29:15) “I think people they don’t really see what their lives are until sometimes they see something worse.” (37:55) “If you don’t have journalists out there to tell the story, then you might as well get thrown back to the great soviet days.  I’ve been to the countries where in no journalism, and you can tell the impact on the people to not have it.” (39:20) “Make sure that those around you are still there by your side.  That means there’s a lot you’ve got to do make sure they’re next to you.  You can’t just beg for it and you can’t just assume it.” (40:57)     Links Mentioned: www.bobwoodrufffoundation.org In An Instant by Bob and Lee Woodruff:  https://www.amazon.com/Instant-Familys-Journey-Love-Healing/dp/0812978250       See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Caregivers have a lot on their plates, but some caregivers, whether through notoriety or sheer desire, find they still have the opportunity to help others going through the same struggles they faced. In 2005, Lee Woodruff became a caregiver for her husband, Bob, an ABC news anchor and reporter wounded in Iraq. The couple went on to create the Bob Woodruff Foundation, designed to help veterans and their caregivers. Creating a large, national nonprofit isn't the only way to help others though. Telling your story so that others might feel less alone in their struggle is another way to help, so that's just what TBI Champion Jasmin Blair chose to do. In this episode of the TBI Family, we talked to Lee and Jasmin about their stories and helping others.
