Time to talk righteous violence!   S.A. Cosby is a writer on a meteoric rise. After the insane success of Razorblade Tears, and the Gothic horrors of All the Sinners Bleed, he's back with a fresh crime epic of titanic brutality.   King of Ashes is the tale of a family under threat from criminal forces, and the shocking depths they will go to in their fight back. It's a challenging book, full of unexpected character arcs, Shakespearean intrigue, and a candid exploration of kink.   It's also bloody, very damn bloody. The crematorium at the story's centre gets well fed!!   We talk about all of that, as well as the strange commonalities of our small town lives, and the influence of violent men.   Enjoy!   Other books mentioned:   All The Sinners Bleed (2023), by S.A. Cosby Razorblade Tears (2021), by S.A. Cosby Blacktop Wasteland (2020), by S.A. Cosby A Thousand Acres (1991), by Jane Smiley “The Dog Park,” (1983), by Dennis Etchinson Darkness, Take My Hand (1996), by Dennis Lehane Gone, Baby, Gone (1998) by Dennis Lehane Jar of Hearts (2018), by Jennifer Hillier   Support Talking Scared on Patreon   Check out the Talking Scared Merch line – at VoidMerch   Come talk books on Bluesky @talkscaredpod.bsky.social  on Instagram/Threads, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Learn more about your ad choices. For Ep. 173, Susie Boutry (@NovelVisits) joins me as we circle back to one of our favorite topics — niching down our reading into micro genres! In this special Circle Back, we revisit some previously shared micro genres from our two past Micro Genres We Love episodes and introduce two additional micro genres from a Patreon bonus episode not yet heard on the big show! We give examples that define each micro genre for us and share new books we've read that fit into these niches. Plus, we share books for that DIDN'T work for us. This episode is full of over 100 books for you to add to your TBR! This post contains affiliate links through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). We continue our 'The Year In Metal" series moving into the 90s ... not a great decade for the fortunes of heavy metal. This 1991 episode shows that no specific heavy sub-genre was leading the pack, instead we have as diverse a grouping as you'll ever find in our ever growing series. From extreme metal to folk metal, from punk to hard rock, from boogie rock to grindcore ... it's all represented in this ode to 1991. Don't worry though, metal will arise after the 90s!!! Recorded live at the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival 2023. Rising international stars S.A. Cosby and Chris Hammer are two of the most vibrant and vital voices in crime fiction today. Shawn Cosby rocketed to global prominence with two highly celebrated, award-winning novels. The stunning Blacktop Wasteland, a powerful and stylish slice of noir, was followed by the poignant and pugnacious Razorblade Tears which tackles the most important questions of our times head on. His new novel All the Sinners Bleed is much anticipated. Chris Hammer enjoyed a celebrated thirty-year career as a journalist in his native Australia and internationally. His searing debut novel, Scrublands, was the Sunday Time Crime Book of the Year and won the CWA John Creasey Dagger. Four further novels, each gripping and meaningful, have cemented Hammer's place as one of the world's leading thriller writers. Podcast music by Joseph McDade.

Hearts & Daggers

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 10, 2023 49:09

Summary: Welcome to Spooky Season, friends! Holly and Devin kick their favorite time of year off with a real bang today discussing books with serial killers. One host avoids true crime and scary stories at all costs - the other host has never felt more at home than in October vibes. Both hosts agree that that national obsession with serial killers acts as both an exploration into the muddy waters of human nature and a genuinely helpful protective mechanism for cis and trans women who need to be on their guard. Join us for some lighthearted fun about more than one murder!  Topics Discussed: The Dagger (3:17): Holly discussed All The Sinners Bleed by S.A. Cosby, a detective procedural following Titus Crown, the first Black sheriff of Charon County, as he responds to a call about a shooting at a local school and then must confront a reeling community and the fact that the true threat is still at large - a serial killer hiding in plain sight. Holly's key takeaways were: While sometimes plot is enough, S.A. Cosby's writing is phenomenal in this book, filled with with the kinds of delightful and original turns of phrase common in Southern speaking; he even names the county after the figure who ferries souls across the Rivers Styx and Acheron into the underworld in Greek mythology.  Racism and hatred that exists bubbling under the surface, or on the surface at times, of this town and community. Titus must confront his own role and place in racial dynamics as a Black man but also as a law enforcement officer; he is met with hatred by both Black and white members of the community as he seeks to understand what “right” is.  The cat-and-mouse game between Titus and the serial killer explores how things may not be what they seem - which is also reflected in the religious community. Cosby explores the choices people can make and how bad people can still do good things - they just prefer to do bad things more.  The Heart (20:30): Devin discussed Love in the Time of Serial Killers by Alicia Thompson, a novel following PhD candidate Phoebe Walsh as she spends a summer in Florida cleaning out her childhood home after her estranged father's passing. Things escalate quickly when she becomes convinced that the next door neighbor, Sam Dennings, is a serial killer. Devin's key takeaways were: Thompson highlights the very real (but slightly exaggerated) feelings across many cis and trans women of fearing cis men, especially men they don't know or trust, and how knowing everything about Ted Bundy is actually a mechanism by which they protect themselves from very real danger.  At twelve, Phoebe's parents divorced and she and her brother Connor (he was five at the time) essentially picked sides and were subsequently raised by different parents; in returning to Florida, Phoebe must confront her past, her trauma, and her defense mechanisms that keep her from vulnerability that might unlock the door to real romantic love.  This novel explores confirmation bias and what assumptions can do to our sense of selves and our relationships. Phoebe makes a lot of assumptions about Sam, who he is and what he cares about, and Thompson shows the reader the importance of uncovering truth.  Hot On the Shelf (40:10): Devin: On Beauty by Zadie Smith Holly: Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer What's Making Our Hearts Race (44:46): Devin: What We Do in the Shadows Season 5 on Hulu Holly: Big Fish   Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Northern Ireland author ADRIAN MCKINTY chats to Craig Sisterson about the return of Sean Duffy in his new novel THE DETECTIVE UP LATE, the mystery of sales v awards,  pitching to the Beeb, giving it another go.THE DETECTIVE UP LATE: Slamming the door on the hellscape of 1980s Belfast, Detective Inspector Sean Duffy hopes that the 1990s are going to be better for him and the people of Northern Ireland. As a Catholic cop in the mainly Protestant RUC he still has a target on his back, and with a steady girlfriend and a child the stakes couldn't be higher. After handling a mercurial triple agent and surviving the riots and bombings and assassination attempts, all Duffy wants to do now is live. But in his final days in charge of Carrickfergus CID, a missing persons report captures his attention. A fifteen-year-old traveler girl has disappeared and no one seems to give a damn about it. Duffy begins to dig and uncovers a disturbing underground of men who seem to know her very well. The deeper he digs the more sinister it all gets. Is finding out the truth worth it if DI Duffy is going to get himself and his colleagues killed? Can he survive one last case before getting himself and his family out over the water?ADRIAN MCKINTY: was born and grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He studied politics and philosophy at Oxford University before moving to New York in the mid 1990s. His first novel Dead I Well May Be (loosely based on his experiences as an illegal immigrant in the US) was published in 2003. In 2012 after moving to Australia with his wife and children he began publication of the critically acclaimed Sean Duffy series. In 2019 after giving up writing Adrian had a global hit with his standalone novel The Chain. Adrian's books have won the Edgar Award, the Ned Kelly Award (3 times), The Anthony Award, Barry Award, Macavity Award and the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award. A crackling good police procedural. . . Cosby delivers a fine climax. Then, in an epilogue, he serves up a final treat that's worth the whole trip. . . Fresh and exhilarating.”―New York Times Book Review, Stephen King“S. A. Cosby's novels always hit the grand slam of crime fiction; unstoppable momentum, gripping intrigue and deep character with a hard and telling look at culture and society. I hesitate to call All The Sinners Bleed his masterpiece because he has many more books to write and they only get better and better. Cosby no doubt carries the mantle of Faulkner with him as he uses the crime story to show us where we are and how far we still need to go. Sheriff Titus Crown lives in these pages and your heart. He's a character for the ages.”―Michael Connelly, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Desert Star“Riveting. . . What elevates this book is how Cosby weaves politically charged salient issues ― race, religion, policing ― through the prism of a serial murder investigation and the perspective of one of the most memorable heroes in contemporary crime fiction. . . Deeply moving and memorable.”―Washington Post“On the basis of four novels, each better than the last (andAll the Sinners Bleed the best of them all), it's fairly easy to say that American crime fiction has found its future and his name is S.A. Cosby.”―Dennis Lehane, New York Times bestselling author of Small Mercies“Cosby vaults his own high bar. . .His most deeply resonant, timely and timeless novel to date.”―Los Angeles Times --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/booklicious/message

Narrator Adam Lazarre-White draws listeners into the new thought-provoking crime novel from S.A. Cosby. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Robin Whitten discuss this story of Titus Crowne, the first Black sheriff in a small Virginia county. As listeners enter Titus's world, he is faced with a shooter at a high school, a neo-Confederate group on the march, and a serial killer terrifying the town. This is a gripping, timely tale—beautifully told. Stay tuned for an interview with S.A. Cosby coming June 6, in AudioFile's articles. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Watch With Jen started 2022 with an episode featuring fan favorite S.A. Cosby, so as we begin wrapping up our third season, it's only fitting that we bring Shawn back to discuss more movies he loves. As kind and genuine as he is knowledgeable and gifted, the first time I ever chatted with Shawn was one week before he released the book that would become a smash success and put him on the map.The remarkable Blacktop Wasteland won an avalanche of well-deserved praise and awards, including the Anthony and the International Thriller Writers Award for Best Hardcover Fiction Novel. Impressively, his follow-up title Razorblade Tears met and/or exceeded all expectations, becoming a runaway New York Times bestseller, earning Shawn another boatload of accolades, including repeat honors from organizations that celebrated Blacktop Wasteland the previous year. Perhaps the most staggeringly awesome achievement for Razorblade Tears, however, was when it was included as one of the titles on former President Obama's list of summer reads! Yet still as gracious as ever and well-loved among his colleagues, we're all so very proud of Shawn, and, considering that he was working intensely on the final edits of his next novel All the Sinners Bleed (out June 2023), I appreciated all the more his taking the time to tackle a filmmaker that fascinates him in this roughly one hundred minute conversation. While the first part of our chat is devoted to his own work because fans always want to know what's going on with the screen adaptations of his books and all other news (including my attempts to make him blush with questions from his best friend Nikki Dolson), we then venture north to Toronto to look at the weird, wild, kinky, yet morose filled world of Armenian-Egyptian-Canadian writer-director Atom Egoyan.Drawn to stories of tragedy, regret, alienation, isolation in modern society, and our struggles to connect with one another, in this episode, we look at his two career high-water marks of the 1990s with Exotica and The Sweet Hereafter, as well as his biggest box office hit from 2009 in Chloe. Analyzing the films' rich characterization, performances, and our impressions of what Egoyan is trying to say, while we do get deep, we also entertain, whether it's in the tale I share about this time in college when this woman in the quad tried to recruit me to join her escort agency (she had the wrong girl!) or Shawn talking about the beauty of ambiguous endings while touching on his own work. Cinephiles will dig this episode.Logo: KateGabrielle.comTheme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveOriginally Posted on Patreon (11/14/22) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/74615939
