Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish. Next Episode In two weeks (October 30), Catherine and I will be back with our Fall 2024 Circle Back episode.
This episode of BOOKSPO is brought to you by COPIBEC, and their new three-part podcast series COPYRIGHT ACT: A CENTURY OF STORIES, a fascinating journey through the 100-year history of copyright in Canada—and even beyond it. Rich, immersive, and also FUN (!), COPYRIGHT ACT: A CENTURY OF STORIES, a series funded by the Government of Canada, is available now wherever you get your podcasts. Visit https://bit.ly/bookspo-copyright-act to start listening now. Many thanks to our sponsor! Suzy Krause's I THINK WE'VE BEEN HERE BEFORE was a total word-of-mouth book for me, a book I picked up because a trusted friend promised I would love it—and I did! A comforting book about the end of world—can you even fathom such a thing? It's a novel that Suzy pitches—most remarkably—as (wait for it…) Iain Reid's I'M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS meets Stuart McLean's VINYL CAFE DIARIES. Cozy and unsettling at once. Okay! And just as much as I loved the book, I adored our conversation. Suzy talks to me about how her initial BOOKSPO pick was Iain Reid's I'M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS, but when she realized Ashley Tate had picked it already back in Season 1, she went with Stuart McLean instead. Both authors, she explains, give her a kind of permission as a writer, Reid to get a little weird, and McLean to lean into her instincts to see the good in people, the possibility of community. Her characters, she tells me, are inspired by the kind of people she grew up around, and my favourite character in the book just might be a checker at her local grocery store….I'm looking forward to hanging out with Suzy IRL next week at Type Books Junction (2887 Dundas St. W) where I will be moderating a discussion between her and Marissa Stapley about their wonderful new novels. Event begins at 7pm. Join us!Marlen and Hilda Jorgensen's family has received two significant pieces of news: one, Marlen has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Two, a cosmic blast is set to render humanity extinct within a matter of months. It seems the coming Christmas on their Saskatchewan farm will be their last.Preparing for the inevitable, they navigate the time they have left together. Marlen and Hilda have channeled their energy into improbably prophetic works of art. Hilda's elderly father receives a longed-for visitor from his past, her sister refuses to believe the world is ending, and her teenaged nephew is missing. All the while, her daughter struggles to find her way home from Berlin with the help of an oddly familiar stranger. For everyone, there's an unsettling feeling that this unprecedented reality is something they remember.Suzy Krause is the bestselling author of Sorry I Missed You and Valencia and Valentine. She grew up on a little farm in rural Saskatchewan and now lives in Regina, where she writes novels inspired by crappy jobs, creepy houses, personal metaphorical apocalypses, and favorite songs. Her work has been translated into Russian and Estonian. Suzy lives in Regina, Saskatchewan.Pickle Me This is a reader-supported publication. For Ep. 173, Susie Boutry (@NovelVisits) joins me as we circle back to one of our favorite topics — niching down our reading into micro genres! In this special Circle Back, we revisit some previously shared micro genres from our two past Micro Genres We Love episodes and introduce two additional micro genres from a Patreon bonus episode not yet heard on the big show! We give examples that define each micro genre for us and share new books we've read that fit into these niches. Plus, we share books for that DIDN'T work for us. This time I'm talking with Ashley Tate, bestselling debut author of TWENTY-SEVEN MINUTES, about how reading Iain Reid's smash hit novel I'M THINKING OF ENDINGS gave her permission to write the blendy psychological thriller-literary mash-up of her dreams (or worst nightmares?). In our conversation, Ashley talks about stumbling upon Reid's debut novel without any idea of what she was getting into, how the novel gave her permission to write the kind of book she wants to read, about leaping over the bounds and limits of genre, how for her it always starts with character, the ways in which an ordinary setting can be absolutely creepy with the right tension, and why it makes sense that a story about grief is so destabilizing. About TWENTY SEVEN MINUTES: Welcome to West Wilmer.Where everyone knows everyone. And where everyone has a secret.THE QUESTION No one in the small, claustrophobic town of West Wilmer can forget Phoebe Dean, their sweet, beloved golden girl. It's been ten years since the car crash that tragically took her life, yet one question lingers: Why did it take her brother, Grant, twenty-seven minutes to call for help after the accident?THE SECRET As the anniversary of Phoebe's death approaches, Grant is consumed by memories of that night and everything he lost: his future, his reputation, his little sister. And the secret he's been keeping all these years is threatening to undo him. But he and Phoebe weren't the only ones in the car that night. Becca was there, too, and she'll do anything to protect Grant.THE TRUTH Everyone in West Wilmer remembers Phoebe, but only June Delroy remembers the other person lost that same night. Her brother, Wyatt, disappeared ten years ago, without a trace.Until someone appears at her door.Someone who may know where Wyatt went all those years ago.Someone who knows what really happened that night.Someone who is ready to tell the truth.Taking place over three days and culminating in a shocking twist that will leave you breathless, Twenty-Seven Minutes is a gripping story about what happens when grief becomes unbearable, dark secrets are unearthed, and the horrifying truth is revealed.ASHLEY TATE worked for over a decade as a writer and an editor for various publications as well as Canada's first online magazine. Twenty-Seven Minutes is her debut. She lives with her husband, their two children, and their dog in Toronto. Get full access to Pickle Me This at kerryreads.substack.com/subscribe

Our latest guest on Soundtracking is Garth Davis, who makes a welcome return to discuss his psychological sci-fi thriller, Foe. Based on the book by Iain Reid, it stars Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal as a couple whose life is turned upside down when a stranger arrives at their farm to tell them one of them will be sent to a space station, while the other will be left in the company of a robot. Unusually, Foe is scored by 3 composers, so find out right here what Garth had in mind with that decision ...
The Canadian author Iain Reid writes electrifying, if unsettling, novels about what happens inside relationships. His first novel, “I'm Thinking of Ending Things,” was adapted for the screen by Charlie Kaufman. Now, his second novel, “Foe,” is coming out as a film, starring Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal. Iain wrote the screenplay himself. He talks to Tom about turning his dystopian novel into a movie filled with emotion, what it's like to write novels that get adapted for the screen, and what draws him to writing about relationships.
Cade, Diane, and Harrison discuss two films set in Oklahoma: I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020) and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023). Watch the video version at: YouTube.com/@CadeThomas/streams Double Feature Movie Club is a weekly movie review show with a retro vibe. Two movies. Three people. One rambling conversation. Each film is our first time watching them. We often go off-topic. I'm Thinking of Ending Things is a 2020 American surrealist psychological thriller film written and directed by Charlie Kaufman. It is an adaptation of the 2016 novel of the same name by Iain Reid. The plot follows a young woman (Jessie Buckley) who goes on a trip with her boyfriend (Jesse Plemons) to meet his parents (Toni Collette and David Thewlis); throughout the film, the main narrative is intercut with footage of a school janitor (Guy Boyd) going to work, with both stories intersecting by the third act. Killers of the Flower Moon is a 2023 American epic revisionist Western crime drama film directed and produced by Martin Scorsese, who co-wrote the screenplay with Eric Roth, based on the 2017 book of the same name by David Grann. Its plot centers on a series of Oklahoma murders in the Osage Nation during the 1920s, committed after oil was discovered on tribal land. Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone lead an ensemble cast that includes Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow, and Brendan Fraser.
Film critic Ryan Gilbey and music and club culture writer Kate Hutchinson deliver their verdict on Hackney Diamonds - the first new Rolling Stones album for 18 years – and Garth Davis' film Foe, which is based on a sci-fi novel by Iain Reid and stars Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal. Lessons in Chemistry was 2022's hit novel about a thwarted chemist who becomes an early TV cook. It's now been turned into a series for Apple TV, starring Brie Larson, complete with authentic 1950s food. Chef and cookbook author Courtney McBroom, who was the show's food consultant, gives us an insight into what this involved. Doctors - the long running BBC TV drama - is ending after more than 23 years. The last episode will be broadcast in December 2024. The show follows the lives of medics and their patients in a GP surgery in the fictional town of Letherbridge. Tonight on Front Row we speak to one of the shows former writers, Joy Wilkinson, who cut her teeth in TV drama writing on the show. She says it was a friendly, creative environment and a great training ground for many writers and actors. Presenter: Tom Sutcliffe Producer: Corinna Jones
The guys discuss the film adaptation of FOE, the story of Junior and Henrietta, a married couple living on a remote farm in the near future. One day, a mysterious man named Terrence arrives. Terrence works for an aerospace corporation called OuterMore and tells Junior he's been selected to travel to the Installation, a large space station that orbits around earth, to test its livability for human life. Jess is joined by Ciara Treacy and Cameron Hill to discuss the first book club pick, Foe by Iain Reid.
We were happy to have director Garth Davis make his New York Film Festival debut with the World Premiere of Foe, a Spotlight selection of this year's festival, which he recently discussed with NYFF Main Slate committee member Florence Almozini. In the year 2065, a married midwestern couple, Hen (Saoirse Ronan) and Junior (Paul Mescal), live in Junior's weather-beaten ancestral farmhouse. Their relationship seems to be on ground as unsolid as the expansive, desolate landscape that surrounds them, parched and mottled by decades of climate change. One night, a stranger (Aaron Pierre) arrives at their door with a surprising proposal, offering them the chance to change their own futures and perhaps alter the course of human existence. In this superbly rendered, sensationally acted science-fiction drama, adapted from the acclaimed novel by Iain Reid, director Garth Davis (Lion) brilliantly toys with viewers' perceptions while interrogating essential questions of our time about environmental apocalypse and the rise of artificial intelligence, building in emotional intensity to a devastating climax. An Amazon Studios release. Don't forget to mark your calendars: Foe opens in theaters this Friday, October 6. Tickets to the New York Film Festival are moving fast! Get up-to-date information on all available tickets on a daily basis by visiting filmlinc.org/tix.
The guys discuss the film adaptation of THE LONG GOODBYE, a classic hard-boiled detective fiction novel written by Raymond Chandler, that tells the story of Philip Marlowe, a private detective living in Los Angeles, who is pulled into a mystery when both his friend Terry Lennox, and his wife, turn up dead, the latter by murder and the former by suicide. Or were they? While Marlowe investigates the deaths, he's pulled deeper into the lives of the Lennox's neighbors, the famous author Roger Wade and his wife, and the police. … The film adaptation stars Elliott Gould, Nina van Pallandt, Sterling Hayden, and a brief appearance from a young Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film was released in 1973 and was directed by Robert Altman, with the screenplay written by Leigh Brackett. … Topics of discussion include the modernizing of the film's setting, the dynamic performances of Gould and Sterling, the complex plot of the book that is stripped down in the film, and the unlikely talent of striking a match. … Listen to the episode to find out how the series stacks up to the book. … (0:00) From the book… (1:30) Fast facts, recap, trivia… (10:49) A word from our sponsor… (11:14) Studio pitch & novel breakdown… (28:47) “Take off your clothes…” (30:54) Learn you something, differences from the book… … Our next episode will be on the adaptation of the Iain Reid novel, FOE, our first episode of this year's upcoming season on 2023 Oscar Bait. Dr. Nicola Millard and John Loftus (BT Young Scientist STEM Inspirations podcast, 8Radio Ireland) join Flixwatcher to review Nicola's choice I'm Thinking of Ending Things. i'm thinking of ending things is the 2020 Charlie Kaufman adaptation of the novel of the same name by Iain Reid. It stars Jessie Buckley as the Young Woman, who could be called Lucy, Louisa, Lucia, and Ames and Jessie Plemmons as her boyfriend Jake. On a wintery car journey to meet Jake's parents, Mother (Toni Collette) and Father (David Thewlis), the Young Woman is contemplating ending their relationship. After their arrival at Jake's family home things become increasingly surreal and reality, memory and imagination all merge into one. It is fair to say the reaction for i'm thinking of ending things was mixed for Flixwatcher and guests, despite being huge fans of other Kaufman films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Being John Malkovich. Scores for recommendability were quite low and only improved slightly for small screen and to give an overall rating of 2.75. Alex, Emily, and John discuss Iain Reid's psychological thriller I'M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS (2016). What did you think the book was about when you first saw the title? Is the book funny? Is it frightening? What was your reaction to the end of the story? Are dramatic twists just storytelling gimmicks or do they add complexity to a story? In addition to the book, Alex, Emily, and John chat about the Id, the Ego, and the Superego, as well as the ways that isolation impacts modern life.

Hey, there all you Kindred Spirits! We apologize for the delay in the publishing of this episode. (and the delay in the publishing of these little show notes!) The “editing team” clearly got a little behind on this one! It was bound to happen eventually though! We are so blessed to have had several people contact us and ask us when they could be expecting this week's episode to be out! How fun is that? It really lets us see that a handful of people are 100% enjoying our little bookcast and honestly, nothing makes us happier than that! Everyone can breathe now! The episode is out, the show notes have arrived, and we are glad to have you with us. There is a brief moment within this episode where Brooke chimes in “post-recording” so give a spoiler alert - oopsies - for The Great Gatsby. This episode had to be edited again and re-uploaded due to the spoiler alert accidentally being uploaded near the end of the episode as well. If you re-download the episode, that should fix it. Hey, hey, hey everyone!!! We are so grateful you're here with us! We had a great time recording our nice basic episode! This one is exactly 45 minutes so it's perfect for that car ride to or from work! Just to go ahead and let you guys know, there was some funkiness with the audio during this recording! It's not too noticeable (we hope), but you may hear a slight buzz/ vibrating noise while we are talking. It should not hinder your enjoyment of this fun little episode but if it does, we apologize! ALSO, Brookie has continued to make this mistake! She, for some reason, thought that I'm Thinking Of Ending Things by Iain Reid was adapted into a TV show BUT it is NOT a TV Show adaptation!!! Oopsies!! It's definitely a film adaptation done by Netflix! It is marked as a horror/thriller movie. We should have some fun merchandise available soon! Be on the lookout for sure! This week we cover Charlie Kaufman's dense and beautiful adaptation of Iain Reid's book, "i'm thinking of ending things." We have a very special guest this week, our literary expert Mrs. Spike's Mom (Libby Alkire) will give her thoughts on the adaptation and a quick rundown on the book. After that, we breakdown and interpret the film beat by beat. Once we do that, we each pair the film with another. Thanks so much for listening!Created by Spike Alkire & Jake KelleyTheme Song by Breck McGough

TW: suicide and depression. This book was such a surreal fever dream. It was confusing, then frightening, then immediately tragic. Loneliness can conjure many harrowing mental illnesses, one of those is Maladaptive Daydreaming, which is how I decided to interpret this book. In this episode I'll discuss MADD and also loneliness and the importance of social interaction, through the lens of “I'm Thinking of Ending Things”. This is the Goodreads Summary for anyone wanting to read it: Now a Netflix original movie, this deeply scary and intensely unnerving novel follows a couple in the midst of a twisted unraveling of the darkest unease. You will be scared. But you won't know why… I'm thinking of ending things. Once this thought arrives, it stays. It sticks. It lingers. It's always there. Always. Jake once said, “Sometimes a thought is closer to truth, to reality, than an action. You can say anything, you can do anything, but you can't fake a thought.” And here's what I'm thinking: I don't want to be here. In this smart and intense literary suspense novel, Iain Reid explores the depths of the human psyche, questioning consciousness, free will, the value of relationships, fear, and the limitations of solitude. Reminiscent of Jose Saramago's early work, Michel Faber's cult classic Under the Skin, and Lionel Shriver's We Need to Talk about Kevin, “your dread and unease will mount with every passing page” (Entertainment Weekly) of this edgy, haunting debut. Tense, gripping, and atmospheric, I'm Thinking of Ending Things pulls you in from the very first page…and never lets you go.
We need a drinking game for this episode of the podcast and not just the story! Count how many times we say pedantic, pretentious, and circle-jerk. (Hint: it's a bunch) We love the cast of this movie and have strong opinions about the execution. One of us just breaks and can't even bring her feelings to words. We're sorry in advance. Episode Drink: The Schrodinger's Cat Recipe Ingredients For the honey syrup 1/2 cup Clover honey 1/4 cup boiling water For the cocktail: 3 slices peach Ice 3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 dash Angostura bitters 1/2 ounce honey syrup 1/2 ounce mezcal 1/2 ounce Lillet blanc 1 1/2 ounces bourbon Garnish: peach slice Instructions 1. To make the honey syrup, stir hot water into honey until dissolved. Let cool. (Excess syrup can be stored, covered, in the refrigerator for several weeks.) 2. Muddle peach slices in a cocktail shaker. Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Add Angostura, honey syrup, lemon, mezcal, Lillet, and bourbon. Shake vigorously. 3. Double-strain in to a cocktail glass. Garnish with peach slice. Recipe From: SeriousEats.com Our Drinking Game for this Story: Take a drink every time you see an outfit change. Take a drink when the age changes. Take a drink whenever you begin to feel uneasy. Take a drink any time Jake says something pretentious. Take shot when you notice the actor change? Because why the fuck not, there are no rules to this story ande to this game. When the young woman and Jake are in the car going to get ice cream, take some shrooms because that is the only way you're going to enjoy the ending...maybe even make sense of it. In the third installment of the Humanitis podcast, Jayden discusses Charlie Kaufman's latest film, I'm Thinking of Ending Things, a movie based on the novel by Iain Reid. Long story short, he loves this movie and everything about it. It says so much about the human condition and how easy it is for intelligent minds to unravel. Also discussed, the weirdness of friendship, how we freeze people in our memories, and create narratives based on people we've never even met. This episode contains spoilers of the film. But you should still watch it! If you enjoyed the podcast, consider leaving a review!
