Books for High Schoolers Who Seem to Have Become NonreadersThe owners wanted more information for this one, such as what are this young man's interests. That led into a broader conversation about broad categories, rather than specific books that can help get teens reading again. For Sam, these include narrative nonfiction in the sociology, history, and travel sections. Allie recommended dystopian fiction. Kari chose books that have protagonists who are the same age as the reluctant reader. And, Emma recommended series. All referenced Shelf Help's previous reading slump episode. Specific books to ponder include: the Saga Series, Endurance by Alfred Lansing, Friday Black by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, Serpent King by Jeff Zentner, and We All Looked Up by Tommy Wallach.Shelf Help is a podcast where booksellers help you answer one of life's trickier  - and we'd argue extremely important - questions: what should you read next?  If you've got a reading dilemma, you can email us a question or voice memo at shelfhelpuv@gmail.com. That is to say: our friend is a smidge angry. We process some of that anger before we move into Side Eyes and I See Yous, and then we do a little catch-up on the non-football things that have happened this past week. You may pick up on the fact that non-football life has been a much more consistent source of joy. We're ready to talk about class, parental abuse and friendship as we travel to rural Tennessee for The Serpent King. Guided by thoughtful emails from listeners Tea, Books and Chocolate, Emily and Victoria, we discuss the deeply upsetting lives of Dill and Travis, as well as their rich, entitled friend Lydia (boo, hiss). We joke because obviously Lydia has a role to play in this narrative about escaping from small towns, bad parents and looking ahead to the future. Are there tears? Yes (Possibly on air) Is it relatable? Absolutely. Basically this book is all the feels, so much so that we're not at all bothered by the overly happy ending.Wanna connect with the show? We found a lot to laugh about in this show about 30-something actors playing first year university students in Melbourne. Whether or not that's part of the joke, there's plenty of relatable comedy in this accessible sitcom from Australia's ABC (it's also available on CBC Gem in Canada and the Comedy Central app in the US). We have lengthy discussions about how the show does and doesn't address racism, and see a little too much of ourselves in the Post-Grad Student character. What did we do to you, Ronny Chieng?!Wanna connect with the show? Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr

We're dipping back into comics! This time we're hitting some New Adult content with Y: The Last Man, which is Joe's Gateway back into comics as an adult. Both of us have read all of these before, though we don't remember a great deal  (we certainly didn't remember how frequently Vaughan trots out the R slur). This one's tough because the premise is killer (literally) and the comics are a speedy, easy read, but the politics - from the reliance on hypnotized, angry women; the cavalier treatment of trans and lesbian character and the weird war-mongering of Israel - have not aged well. The TV show definitely updates and modernizes this, particular the characters of Elliot Fletcher's Sam and  Amber Tamblyn's Kimberly, though Brenna takes issue with the uncertain use of Nora (Marin Ireland) and Yorrick (Ben Schnetzer)'s stupidity. All in all, we have a good conversation despite Brenna's microphone going on the fritz multiple times!Wanna connect with the show? What do you get when you cross clever, sometimes soaring, sometimes heart-breaking, always beautiful prose with immortality, fantasy, and historical themes? Signature Joy Preble. Since 2009, when she published the first book in her Dreaming Anastasia series, she has been writing YA novels that will break your heart, restore your hope in the good things life has to offer, and call attention to the ways in which humans fail one another disastrously.Sidenote, she’s a master of the meet-cute. There’s a very memorable scene in Finding Paris, in a Vegas diner with a neutron joke and a coconut cream pie that we’ll put up against any Nick Hornby or Four Weddings & a Funeral scene. YA Author Adam Silvera has likened her depictions of plucky teen detectives to Veronica Mars, and we agree. We had similar feelings of escape and sheer doughnut popping sweetness diving into Preble’s two series and her two standalone books — seven books in all. She’s a gem of a writer, a teacher, and a helluva of a bookseller too. We’re lucky to have her on the show. In what turned out to be a surprisingly contentious discussion (our panel is passionately divided), we discuss Amy Spalding's The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the Best Burger in Los Angeles). Molly suggests Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan. Kim suggests To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han and The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner. Amy mentions When Dimple Met Rishi as a potential readalike (before we talk readalikes). Lindsey suggests Strangers in Paradise by Terry Moore. Cash Money suggests the movie Sarah Burgess is a Big Loser. Nathan mentions Pink by Lili Wikerson but vacillates on whether it is a good readalike or not.

This week on the 'MashReads Podcast,' we are joined by author Jeff Zentner to discuss his latest novel 'Goodbye Days.' And, as always, we close the show with recommendations: Jeff recommends 'The Last of August' by Brittany Cavallaro. The book is the second book in the 'Charlotte Holmes' series. "Both books are the most utterly brilliant blend of commercial and literary writing." He also recommends 'History Is All You Left Me' by Adam Silvera (which we talked about here on the MashReads Podcast with Silvera himself). And finally, Jeff has been reading books by Khaled Hosseini. "He is what I want to be. His books are so poignant and so resonant and so beautifully written." Aliza recommends the 'Percy Jackson & The Olympians' series after seeing the new off-broadway show 'The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical.' "They're fun and they're funny. Even though when you are reading them, it's very clear they are written for 12-year-olds, there are some deep dark stuff barely under the surface." Peter recommends HBO's show 'Big Little Lies.' "This is one of the rare things where I would almost have watched this than read the book because it is such a visual story, or at least how they tell it on HBO. It is so dramatically withholding in visual form." MJ recommends 'South and West' by Joan Didion. "[Joan Didion] is just such an astute observer of life."
