This week, we're chatting to Maz Evans, a celebrated Children's author who has taken the plunge into Adult fiction, publishing her second cosy crime book.Maz is a Carnegie Award and CWA Golden Dagger Shortlisted writer. 'Who Let the Gods Out', 'Vi Spy', and her 'Scarlett Fife' series are loved by kids across the world. Her new adult novel is 'That'll Teach Her', it's a multi-media novel telling the story of a group of parents trying to solve a murder over their WhatsApp group. It's the perfect blend of Richard Osman and Janice Hallett. We discuss the intricate plotting of crime novels - setting up the character, laying enough red herrings, and making everything believable. You can hear why everything comes from character, why she's mindful of taking care of herself, and about the only rule she has.Maz is busy writing multiple books a year across different genre, for different audiences, and she brilliantly takes us through twelve months in her writing life. Amanda Abbington joins Anita Rani to talk about her new role in Tawni O'Dell's play When It Happens To You. Amanda plays Tara, a mother who is desperately trying to hold her family together after her daughter is brutally attacked. She discusses playing a mother whose own trauma is triggered by her daughter's experiences and how a culture of shame can lead to women's silence. In the latest in our series on ‘genre fiction', we turn to the UK's most popular genre: crime fiction. Jane Casey is the creator of the award-winning and gritty Maeve Kerrigan detective series, most recently appearing in A Stranger in the Family. Janice Hallett has been dubbed the 'Queen of cosy crime' for her unconventional and popular epistolary style mystery books, including her new novel The Examiner. They talk to Anita about the evolution of women as murderers and sleuths in crime fiction, and whether crime can ever be 'cosy'.Is there asbestos in make-up? The new Radio 4 series Talc Tales investigates questions about the safety of talc in make-up and cosmetics after women diagnosed with cancer have launched court cases against some cosmetic companies, claiming products are contaminated with asbestos. Anita is joined in the studio by BBC journalist Phoebe Keane to hear what she found while making the series. For a while now there has been a war going on social media over the length of your socks. If you are a millennial you are most likely wearing ankle socks. Whereas Gen-Z are hiking them right up to their knees. Janice Hallett has created three of the most inventive crime books of recent years. When I first started reading ‘The Appeal' I was a bit dubious. How could a crime novel with big characters really be told through emails and messages? Then I got into the book…Next came The Twyford Code with a main character, a prisoner Steve Smith who can neither read nor write, who reveals his story through transcripts of audio recordings. It is GENIUS!And now there is the Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels, told through research papers left by a journalist investigating a cult. Another triumph. In this episode Janice talks of how she is inspired by true crime, how she never plots her books and how her previous careers as a screenwriter and speechwriter have helped her as a fiction writer. To find out more about Janice and her books, click here. Her latest book, The Examiner, will be available from August 29th. The early part of a year can mean new books to read, or it can mean catching up on older ones we haven't gotten to yet. This week, Gilbert Cruz chats with the Book Review's Sarah Lyall and Sadie Stein about titles from both categories that have held their interest lately, including a 2022 biography of John Donne, a book about female artists who nurtured an interest in the supernatural, and the history of a Jim Crow-era mental asylum, along with a gripping new novel by Janice Hallett.“It's just so deft,” Stein says of Hallett's new thriller, “The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels.” “It's so funny. It seems like she's having a lot of fun. One thing I would say, and I don't think this is spoiling it, is, if there comes a moment when you think you might want to stop, keep going and trust her. I think it's rare to be able to say that with that level of confidence.”Here are the books discussed in this week's episode:“Super-Infinite: The Transformations of John Donne,” by Katherine Rundell“The Other Side: A Story of Women in Art and the Spirit World,” by Jennifer Higgie“The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels,” by Janice Hallett“Madness: Race and Insanity in a Jim Crow Asylum,” by Antonia Hylton(Briefly mentioned: "You Dreamed of Empires," by Álvaro Enrigue, "Beautyland," by Marie-Helene Bertino, and "Martyr!" by Kaveh Akbar.)

Janice Hallett is the author of three best-selling novels. Her debut, The Appeal, was awarded the CWA Debut Dagger of 2021. Her second novel, The Twyford Code, was named Crime & Thriller Book of the Year in the British Book Awards 2023. Janice is a former magazine editor, award-winning journalist, and government communications writer. As a playwright and screenwriter, she penned the feminist Shakespearean stage comedy NetherBard and co-wrote the feature film Retreat. Today, we're discussing her festive novella returning to the world of her debut: The Christmas Appeal. Our interview begins at 21:00We've got a Substack publication now! The beauty of Substack is you can revisit all our old editions and comment on our episode updates to share your thoughts. Come say hi! Caitlin has been shimmying away in Jersey Boys and hasn't had time to read much, so instead, Michelle is giving two recommendations for the week. Michelle recommends: Strong Female Character by Fern BradyThis memoir is, at times, tough to read because it is unflinchingly honest. Fern was told she 'couldn't be autistic' because she had boyfriends and made eye contact – but this book explores the ways that being female has got in the way of an autism diagnosis and how understanding herself as autistic has helped her understand herself better. Michelle recommends: The Schoolhouse by Sophie WardThis literary thriller introduces us to Isobel – a woman who lives an isolated life and feels safe in her routines. When she gets a letter from an old teacher and a local schoolgirl goes missing, it sends her spiralling into the memories of a traumatic experience at an experimental school from the 1970s. The story dips between the present investigation in 1990 and Isobel's diary entries from 1975. In this interview, we chat about:Janice's almost accidental turn to book publishing after a decade of trying to get a screenwriting career off the ground – and how this inspired The Appeal's groundbreaking formatThe joy of community theatre and how it's shaped Janice's lifeHow Janice plans and writes her novelsRevisiting the world of Lockwood for The Christmas AppealA little teaser for Janice's 2024 novel, The ExaminerHow Janice feels about the success of her books after so many years of screenwritingBooks and other things mentioned:Maisie Peters in her Wembley era (like it's hard)Book Bar (follow them here!)Cool Story Podcast by Bridie Jabor and Bri Lee (discussing The Fraud by Zadie Smith)Treason (musical production)Partygate (TV series)Attachments by Rainbow RowellFollow @janice.hallett on InstagramThe Christmas Appeal is available now. Everyone knows the story of the Alperton Angels – a cult who brainwashed a teenager and convinced her that her baby was the anti-Christ. But 18 years later, two competing true crime authors are quickly discovering all is not what it seemed. Author Janice Hallett joins Richard and Judy to explain why she felt so comfortable writing The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels as a series of email and WhatsApp exchanges, and why these interactions are such a great way to get to the heart of a character. They also discuss what makes a compelling cult leader, and how the themes Janice explores in the novel are evident in our everyday lives too. Don't miss out on this inspiring conversation with Kate Foster! Her latest book is THE MAIDEN:Synopsis'A masterpiece. A thrilling historical murder tale but so much more. Vivid, evocative and full of humanity' – Janice Hallett, bestselling author of The Appeal and The Twyford CodeInspired by a real-life case and winner of the Bloody Scotland Pitch Perfect Award, Kate Foster's The Maiden is a remarkable story with a feminist revisionist twist, giving a voice to women otherwise silenced by history."In the end, it did not matter what I said at my trial. No one believed me."Edinburgh, October 1679. Lady Christian is arrested and charged with the murder of her lover, James Forrester. News of her imprisonment and subsequent trial is splashed across the broadsides, with headlines that leave little room for doubt: Adulteress. Whore. Murderess.Only a year before, Lady Christian was newly married, leading a life of privilege and respectability. So, what led her to risk everything for an affair? And does that make her guilty of murder? She wasn't the only woman in Forrester's life, and certainly not the only one who might have had cause to wish him dead . . .'Threat hangs over every page like the awaiting guillotine, but the women in this book gleam sharper. The first chapter can make or break a reader's engagement with a story. We as writers must craft brilliant opening pages in order to hook those picky readers, so let's study the stories of others to see how they do it! This review, I'm afraid, is going to be rather short, as this novel is not quite like other novels. Rather than a traditional narrative and/or paragraph structure, Janice Hallett's The Appeal is created with emails, text messages, and other media snippets compiled for two lawyers to study in preparation for tackling a murder case. On the one hand, this means we're not getting any details regarding setting or character appearance. On the other hand, we're getting a wealth of first-person perspectives over a period of time that *should* guide us readers to the ultimate solution of the mystery. As a reader, I'm definitely intrigued. As a writer, I admire Hallett taking on this risk. It's a dangerous thing to essentially tell readers, "You don't have all the materials. Hopefully, it's in the right order. Good luck!" It'd be all too easy to just withhold all sorts of things so you can just dump it all in the resolution later. Hopefully, Hallett does not do this. The extra challenge is also to make sure the writing voices for all these characters is consistently different. So far, I couldn't help but chuckle that one character only writes in two-word responses compared to the gushing emails from another character. It's an interesting dynamic, and I've got to continue at least a bit more into the tale to see where these emails take me. And what will you learn from these opening pages? Let's find out! Cheers!
The Twyford Code: A Novel by Janice Hallett The mysterious connection between a teacher's disappearance and an unsolved code in a children's book is explored in this new novel from the “modern Agatha Christie” (The Sunday Times, London) and author of The Appeal. Forty years ago, Steven “Smithy” Smith found a copy of a famous children's book by disgraced author Edith Twyford, its margins full of strange markings and annotations. When he showed it to his remedial English teacher Miss Iles, she believed that it was part of a secret code that ran through all of Twyford's novels. And when she later disappeared on a class field trip, Smithy becomes convinced that she had been right. Now, out of prison after a long stretch, Smithy decides to investigate the mystery that has haunted him for decades. In a series of voice recordings on an old iPhone, Smithy alternates between visiting the people of his childhood and looking back on the events that later landed him in prison. But it soon becomes clear that Edith Twyford wasn't just a writer of forgotten children's stories. The Twyford Code holds a great secret, and Smithy may just have the key. “Filled with numerous clues, acrostics, and red herrings, this thrilling scavenger hunt for the truth is delightfully deceptive and thoroughly immersive” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

We discuss chapters 6-8 of Janice Hallett's bizarre media-meta-fiction 'Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels'. Amanda Bailey's toying with Oliver Menzies has taken the investigation to a new extreme. Oliver's delusions are pushing him to action, and as Amanda approaches the actual truth, he fabricates a whole new one, and takes action. How do the disparate pieces of both fact and fiction collide in the ominous night that became the Alperton Angels suicide? Only a few players know all, and they will not let their work be undone so lightly. We're also joined by Janice herself to talk a bit about the construction of the novel, the inspiration behind the characters, and how we view all-powerful entities. Also check out Janice's article on True Crime writers in The Guardian. Thank you to Viper Books for their assistance in arranging our interview with Janice.

“I'm interested in how deceptions can make you feel more of yourself or can unlock something in you that you didn't know you had.” Eleanor Catton, Booker Prize-winning author of The Luminaries, is back with Birnam Wood — part eco-thriller, part social and political satire, wholly insightful. This propulsive novel is prescient, timely, and all-too relatable in our present day. Catton joins us in conversation about creating her characters, Shakespeare's use of prophecy and power, how the story was influenced by Jane Austen's Emma and more with Poured Over host, Miwa Messer. Listen after the episode for a TBR Topoff from Marc and Madyson. Featured Books (Episode): Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton Macbeth by William Shakespeare We are Bellingcat by Eliot Higgins Emma by Jane Austen Memento Mori by Muriel Spark On Writing by Stephen King Featured Books (TBR Topoff): The Appeal by Janice Hallett Wilder Girls by Rory Power Poured Over is produced and hosted by Miwa Messer and mixed by Harry Liang. We discuss chapters 3-5 of Janice Hallett's bizarre media-meta-fiction 'Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels'. Oliver Menzies grows increasingly unhinged as Amanda Bailey tries to keep her investigation of the Alperton Angels as close to the rails as it can hurtle. Outside threats and late-night interrogations grow more menacing, the voices of past writers grow louder, and Ellie Cooper sits petrified on the fences. Will Amanda get the truth, or will getting close enough to it be her demise? We're also joined by Ashley Kalagian Blunt to talk about her new crime thriller, 'Dark Mode', hours before its' Sydney Launch. Isolated from the internet, Reagan Carsen is afraid her past has come back to haunt her when a severed corpse that looks just like her is left on the street outside her apartment. We talk all about technology and imagery. Thank you to Ultimo Press for providing copies of 'Dark Mode' and arranging our interview with Ashley.

We discuss chapters 1-2 of Janice Hallett's bizarre media-meta-fiction 'Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels'. Journalist and true crime author Amanda Bailey is on the hunt for a new story. Her editors put her onto the case of the Alperton Angels, a perplexing cult-suicide from the early 2000s involving ritual sacrifice and a missing baby. As Amanda begins to work through her wishlist of interviewees for the novel, her old arch rival Oliver Menzies shows up investigating the same case, and the two are forced to work together on the tapestry of conspiracy behind the case. We see the case through the text logs and transcripts of conversations as the narrative is sculpted out in the atmosphere between the hard journalistic fact. In the spirit of strange structures, we're joined by author Ben Hobson to talk about his etched-in-stone Aussie-Outback-western 'The Death of John Lacey', and the motivating factors behind both his narrative choices, and how threatening the reader with a thoughtfully off-kilter structure can impact the feel of a book. Thank you to ABC Radio National and Allen & Unwin for providing copies of 'The Death of John Lacey'. You can catch Herds on 'The Bookshelf' on ABC Radio National discussing the book here.
The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels by Janice Hallett. This is ingeniously done with enough clues and twists and turns to really keep the reader on their toes. The Alperton Angels were a cult-like group who were convinced that one of their member's babies was the anti Christ and they had a divine mission to do away with it – until the baby's mother came to her senses and called the police, whereupon the Angels committed suicide and the baby disappeared into the care system. Nearly 20 years later, true-crime author Amanda Bailey is writing a book on the Angels. The Alperton baby has turned eighteen and can finally be interviewed - if Amanda can find them, it will be the true-crime scoop of the year, and will save her flagging career. But rival author Oliver Menzies is just as smart, better connected, and is also on the baby's trail. As they're forced to collaborate, they realise that what everyone thinks they know about the Angels is wrong, and the truth is something much darker and stranger than they'd ever imagined. I really enjoyed it. The Snakehead by Patrick Radden Keefe. Subtitled An epic tale of the Chinatown underworld and the American dream. In 1993 a rust bucket of a ship called Golden Venture ran aground off the coast of New York City with 300 illegal Chinese migrants on board. The story of their journey to the US is riveting, along with that of the snakeheads who paved their way – snakeheads being human smugglers who charge desperate people tens of thousands of dollars to get to a new life, and in the 1990s Sister Ping was one of the biggest and most active. This is a story of international intrigue, ruthless and opportunistic criminals operating across many borders, and the authorities who tried to bring them to justice. We had a great chat with Janice, hearing about how she made the move from screenwriting to novel writing, and hearing about the unusual style of her novels (The Appeal is written in the form of emails and text messages, while her latest book, The Twyford Code, is told via a series of audio transcripts). We also find out if she is a planner or a pantser, and hear about how she deals with notes in the two different writing disciplines.Links:Buy Janice's books now!Follow Janice on TwitterPage One - The Writer's Podcast is brought to you by Write Gear, creators of Page One - the Writer's Notebook. Janice Hallett career started as a magazine editor, journalist and speech writer. Her first feature film, Retreat, starred Cillian Murphy, Thandiwe Newton and Jamie Bell. She's written speeches for the Home Office, the Cabinet Office and many others. Her frustration at getting screenplays adapted for TV and film prompted her to start writing novels. What a decision. Her debut, 'The Appeal', has achieved phenomenal success. It's been shared widely online by book communities, sold lots of copies and was one of Sunday Times Crime Novels of 2021.It's a murder-mystery set in a tight-knit village community staging an amateur dramatic production, and is all told through emails and messages. We discuss why she set a book in this novel way, and how her career as a screenwriter helped with that.We talk about the moment she knew her book might be taking off, also why she works seven days a week, and how much she reverse-engineers a murder mystery. You can hear how she figured out who the killer was, how her characters mirror different parts of her personality, and about her newest novel, 'The Twyford Code'.You can support the show at patreon.com/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Niba gets into books that fit the ‘that girl' aesthetic. According to Refinery 29, “‘that girl' isn't just healthy, she's professionally successful and looks her best at every moment. She wakes up every morning at 5.30am so she can seize the day and her nails are always uniform, manicured and eternally chip-free.” Being “that girl” means to become someone that looks beautiful and healthy and finds it easy going through her daily life. Oftentimes, “that girl” online is a fake and filtered view at someone's life, watered down to look minimalistic and aesthetic. Other times, “that girl” is someone who has their shit together and is confident in who they are. Either way, “that girl” is someone many aspire to become. Unfortunately, this aspiration can lead to many feeling bad about themselves rather than actually wanting to improve their life. This is no fault of those people, but rather the comparison that people make when looking at themselves and their screens. With the continued rise of social media, the comparisons people are making between themselves and their screens are increasing to a worrying degree. In the second segment Mariquita auditions for a role with the Fairway Players to uncover just who did what and why in The Appeal, an epistolary mystery by Janice Hallett.
