Intimacy & Movement Coordinator Ita O'Brien sat down with HFPA journalist Michele Manelis to discuss her work in developing best practices for the film and television industry in their producing and filming of intimate scenes. They discuss her development of these guidelines, training other intimacy coordinators to help make the service widely available, examples of her work on screen in television series like Normal People and I Will Destroy You, how her position is analagous to a stunt coordinator, working on the production long before the cameras start rolling, the process of working with the various departments, and more.

Put in place wardrobe - appropriate covering for genitalia  b. crew required for a closed set C. consideration of, and budget for, an Intimacy Coordinator.No initial auditions or screen tests are to include sex scenes or to involve nudity. Where, in exceptional circumstances, nudity or semi-nudity is required in a recall, the actor must be informed in advance and provided with the script. All material recorded must be protected and be destroyed once the role has been cast.a. The actor to sign a written agreement with the Casting Director that any recording of a nude or semi-nude audition will be confidential.b. The actor may be asked to audition in specific clothing (e.g. swimwear) required for a commercial but will be informed in advance.c. If an actor is nude or semi-nude in a recall, they may bring a support person to be with them throughout the shoot.d. There is a new job on film sets, a job that has grown out of the #MeToo movement. The role of an intimacy coordinator is still fairly new in the world of film and TV but one that is fast gaining adoption in production houses including the BBC and Netflix. A pioneer and principal practitioner in the field, Ita O’Brien works to choreograph the often complex rhythms of intimate scenes and ensure best practice on set and stage when performances include nudity and sexual content. Ita has worked on productions including Normal People, Sex Education, I May Destroy You, The Dig and It’s a Sin. Joining Laura Barton from her home in Kent, Ita speaks about her work, physical rhythm and how she moved from dancing to acting to intimacy. Kim Chakanetsa talks to an Indian movie director and to a pioneering intimacy coordinator about ensuring actors feel safe on set while filming simulated sex scenes.
