Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 107 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by film critic Brandon Streussnig discuss the latest film in their Paul Verhoeven series, Basic Instinct (1992). We enter a new chapter in the Verhoeven series, as the guys talk about one of the most iconic erotic-thrillers of all time with the most iconic image of the genre. But beyond that one scene lies an ode to Hitchcock, as we follow a sleazy detective down a rabbit hole of deception, sex, and murder as he investigates the death of a wealthy rock star, and the prime suspect is his old girlfriend, a writer whom wrote about his death in her latest book. Purposive, wild, and slightly progressive and regressive at the same time, Basic Instinct is the crown jewel of a type of film that audiences used to obsess over, perfectly made by a director at the height of his powers, featuring an all-time performance from Sharon Stone. Ryan, Jay, and Brandon breakdown their thoughts on the film, the history of the erotic thriller, the controversy over the iconic scene, how sex is weaponized throughout, the introduction to Joe Eszterhas as a writer to the world, the laughable sequel made several years later, ice picks, and just how good of a cop is Michael Douglas' Nick Curran. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h56m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Paul Verhoeven with a review of his film, Showgirls. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental or stream on HBO Max in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Music: MUSICALIFE, from Pond5 (intro) and “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).
Actor Michael Douglas is pressing pause on his acting career, for now. While he isn't officially calling it retirement, he has said he worked pretty hard for 60 years. And that workload is something culture critic and author Jessa Crispin has been looking into. She examined some of Michael Douglas' biggest hits and says that blockbusters like Wall Street and Basic Instinct embody the anger and paranoia of men rocked by shifting gender roles. Her latest book is called What Is Wrong with Men: Patriarchy, the Crisis of Masculinity, and How (Of Course) Michael Douglas Films Explain Everything.
In a single year, Sharon Stone was nominated for awards for both Best Actress and Worst Actress – for the same role. She launched a million sexual awakenings with one quick display in Basic Instinct. Her performance in that film was so vivid that it inspired stalkers to track her down. It may have even served as the inspiration for one fan to commit murder, cannibalism, and necrophilia. This episode contains themes that may be disturbing to some listeners, including graphic depictions of violence. On episode 106 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by the host of The Waffle Press Movie Podcast, Diego Crespo discuss the latest film in their Paul Verhoeven series, Total Recall (1990). Following up the massive success of RoboCop, Verhoeven turned his attention to another world, the planet Mars and the work of Philip K. Dick to make another commentary on our military obsessed culture with Total Recall. Following the story of a construction worker who finds out he is actually a super spy who has been planted with false memories of his past and who he is, setting off a chain of events that leads he into a war between the powerful elites of our world and the newly formed colony on Mars. Thought provoking then as it is now, Verhoeven taps into our ongoing paranoia of who is in-charge of our world, and questions whether their leadership is more relevant than a body of citizens willing to fight for their place in the world. Ryan, Jay, and Diego breakdown their thoughts on the film, if its commentary is as strong as RoboCop, the visual effects, Arnold Schwarzenegger's performance, the meaning of the film's ending, and so much more. Erin Prus is a design leader living in the heart of the Midwest, focuses on the ways words (and their systems and styles) shape design, and impact UI design elements, accessibility, and more. She returns to the show to talk about Challengers, directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Justin Kuritzkes, starring Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O'Connor. And how does it compare to 9 1/2 Weeks or Basic Instinct?-A teacher-journalist turned content designer and UX writer, Erin Prus is no stranger to career pivots. She's been consulting for two seemingly disparate clients in the health tech and horticulture spaces, two things she cares deeply about. This week, Sarah and MJ tackle a film that takes broad and abstract inspiration from Jaws: Basic Instinct. They wax poetic about erotic thrillers, Jerry Goldsmith, and their favorite topic, replacing one of the lead actors with Roy Scheider.

Send us a textKatie and Bridget draw a Mons Pubis on a whiteboard as they re-watch the erotic thriller: Basic Instinct! It's a movie all about how you might think you know who the killer is based on the very first scene of the movie, but actually it might not be that person because there's some other people who could have done it, but then it also might not be them either, all while the original person you thought it was continues to say that they're the killer the entire time but nobody believes them... Look Sharon Stone was the killer alright!! Don't get it twisted! Come along as we meet Nick (aka "Shooter"), a v-neck loving horny cop who's just trying to solve this murder case while also attempting to bone Catherine, the literal murderer even though she never gets convicted for some reason. As Nick becomes more and more of a stalker, people around him begin to die and Catherine becomes more and more cryptic. Kind of like how a killer would act, ya know!? Will the two of them get together and somehow nobody will get stabbed with an ice pick? Are pubes back in style or is that only allowed for 90's Sharon Stone!? Released in 1992, it stars Michael Douglas, Sharon Stone, George Dzundza, Jeanne Tripplehorn, and Leilani Sarelle

Much like "Basic Instinct", "Body of Evidence" has a hot lady that the police think is a murderer. This time, the hot lady is Madonna. And, much like the weird choice of Michael Douglas being paired up for sexy adventures, we get Willem Dafoe. He's younger, he's less scary, and he's just absolutely gotta do his wife (Julianne Moore) dirty and get on Madonna's houseboat for some wax sex.Go on an erotic adventure with us as we gawk and grumble along.

This week on the House of Machismo Podcast… things get steamy — and weirdly ambitious. The guys kick things off by diving into the golden age of ‘90s erotic thrillers — because what's more “House of Machismo” than discussing cinematic masterpieces like Basic Instinct and Wild Things? Which movies are their favorites? Who's a connoisseur of classy on-screen seduction? And who's just here for the… plot? (Spoiler: probably Albert.) Inspired by all this high-brow cinema, the guys decide it's time to start their own adult film company — but this isn't your average low-budget nonsense. Oh no — we're talkin' high-end, big-budget productions with deep storylines, emotional arcs, and stunning visuals. Think The Godfather… but, you know, spicier. Sauce is workshopping dramatic monologues for the plumber character. Meanwhile, poor Albert's living that carless life — and it's getting real. He had to Uber to the studio this morning. The struggle is real, and the rides are expensive. Finally, Marty's back with another round of his famous "What If" questions — the kind that make you question reality, your morals, and why you're even friends with these guys. Things get deep, things get ridiculous, and someone may or may not suggest a scenario involving shadow people and an erotic thriller crossover. It's wild, it's hilarious, and it's got more twists than a late-night cable movie from 1995. Don't miss this one!
It's said that you can't go home again. But you shouldn't just move to London and make the same movie but infinitely worse. And folks, that's where we found ourselves discussing the sequel no one wanted but was contractually obligated to happen - BASIC INSTINCT 2: RISK ADDICTION. Thank goodness social media impresario and Returning Champion to Kill By Kill, Wynter Mitchell, is here to help us process our anger, grief, and utter confusion!! We have many questions, like does that one guy drown because his earrings are too big? Does Cathrine Trammel have superpowers? How does Dr. Woodblock learn to love murder so quickly? Who is going to Hot Topic to buy all these emo-rock belts? Can you drive stick on the left side of the street AND get fingered? The answers, if we find any, will surprise you! All this plus deprived monocle dropping, Indiana Trammel, Hot Tub Talk Shows, and an overqualified edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! If there's a thin line between clever and stupid, the line has never been thinner than today's movie. So grab your ice pick and leave your underwear at home - Kill By Kill After Dark is back, and we're going deep into what some might call the pinnacle of the 90s erotic thriller, BASIC INSTINCT!! Here to help us reveal all the killer details are Elizabeth Malamed and Megan Caper from the How to Be a Terrible Daughter podcast!! Along the way, we expose the film's links to Harvey Birdman: Attorney At Law, worship at the alter of Sharon Stone, consider the practicalities of wearing sweaters in da clerb, badmouth screenwriter Joe Eszterhas, and faint at the concept of bisexuality in the early 90s. Plus, we examine just how bad of a cop Shooter really is, decide to dress like a cowboy for no reason, debate Johnny Boy's rock star status, and play a dangerous game of Choose Your Own Deathventure. A brutal murder. A brilliant killer. And a cop too stupid to do anything about it! Join us, won't you? Listen to How To Be A Terrible Daughter here or where you get your podcasts!
With the Food Network program “Barefoot Contessa,” Ina Garten became a beloved household name. An essential element of her success is her confiding, authentic warmth—her encouragement for even the most novice home cook. Garten is “the real deal,” in the opinion of David Remnick, who has known her and her husband for many years. Although she is a gregarious teacher and presence on television, Garten prefers to do her actual cooking alone. “Cooking's hard for me. I mean, I do it a lot, but it's really hard and I just love having the space to concentrate on what I'm doing, so I make sure it comes out well,” she says. Garten joins Remnick to reflect on her early days in the kitchen, and to answer listener questions about holiday meals and more. Her latest book is “Be Ready When the Luck Happens,” a memoir. This segment originally aired on December 16, 2022.Plus, Alex Barasch picks three of the best erotic thrillers after being inspired to study the genre by his recent Profile of the director of the new film, “Babygirl.”

“It was a dream come true,” says Lindsley Allen, dancer, dance educator and creative choreographer about her role in the now-iconic dance film Showgirls, starring Elizabeth Berkley. Originally, the movie was supposed to be the big dance movie of its generation—something of a “Basic Instinct” meets “Flashdance.” Though the initial reception was less than ideal, in the 30 years since its release, the film has become a cult classic, with fans memorizing every line, and its star—who so unfairly bore the brunt of the backlash—has gone on to receive long-overdue acclaim. Today, Lindsley discusses what it was like to work on such a major movie production, why it was initially misunderstood and now so beloved, and why dancers should always be consulted when making a film about dance. Just as “Showgirls” paved the way for later, more lauded films like Demi Moore's “Striptease,” dancers like Lindsley and host John Corella paved the way to improve the regulations, conditions and rights of dancers working on major film productions. Lindsley discusses what it was like to film the scenes in which the dancers performed topless, working with legendary choreographer Marguerite Derricks, and how her training program The Boom Effect is helping to prepare emerging dancers with bankable skills. Join today's episode of Dance Dad to hear Lindsley recall fondly what it was like to be part of what turned out to be a cult classic. Quotes “It was a huge call…to me it was, everyone was there that was of the A-list category. It was insane. It was a huge audition…and I wanted to get the job. It was big names, it was a big studio, it was a long job for dancers.” (9:47 | Lindsley Allen) “I really think they thought it was going to be…the serious musical drama. They didn't know it was going to be a cult classic. So, when it didn't do well that first weekend, it wasn't what they expected, I'll say it like that. It wasn't what they expected that weekend, and we kind of knew on the inside because some of us as dancers, some of those scenes, we were thinking, ‘Well, we wouldn't really say that, as dancers, we wouldn't really do that.'” (20:00 | Lindsley Allen) “It's because it's so over the top—the acting, the dancing—actually, the dancing might be the most grounded thing in it…you don't laugh at it, you're kind of laughing with it, with love…I think that makes perfect sense and I'm so glad that you said that. I think that is why it became a cult classic because people resonated with it, but just in a different way than what they originally expected.” (23:18 | John Corella and Lindsley Allen) “They really did build [Elizabeth] up so much that it was going to be huge and she ended up…I think for the business it's good for young dancers to know– and that's why I always teach–knowing the business and knowing the artistry and keeping them separate as much as you can, it's not easy but…Her agent dropped her, she was blamed for a lot of the movie's failure and that is just not fair.” (25:47 | Lindsley Allen) “A lot has changed. Dancers who are listening—Lindsley and I, we walked so you could run. There's so much that has changed as far as how long you can dance, the surfaces you can dance on, the types of shoes, with the union— that's why unions are important for dancing—and again, using your voice.” (43:47 | John Corella) Links Connect with Lindsley Allen: www.instagram.com/lindsleyallen 1nightonlyboomeffect.eventbrite.com Dance Dad with John Corella on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dancedadwithjohncorella/ John on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/john_corella/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm
Blake has been a great friend and supporter for a good while now. And hopefully after this review of 1993's Fatal Instinct he still is! Fatal Instinct was an ambitious attempt to spoof the popular erotic thrillers of the early 1990s, but it quickly became an exercise in comedic misfires. Directed by Carl Reiner, a seasoned comedy veteran, the film set out to parody films like Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction, blending noir elements with slapstick humor. Reiner cast Armand Assante, known for his serious roles, as the deadpan detective-lawyer Ned Ravine, hoping his straight-faced delivery would amplify the absurdity. The production leaned heavily into noir aesthetics, using moody lighting, shadowy sets, and sultry music to mimic the atmosphere of the thrillers it aimed to lampoon. Despite the experienced cast and high production values, the film struggled from the outset. The humor, though abundant, felt forced and overplayed, often missing the mark. The balance between parody and slapstick proved difficult to maintain, resulting in a film that felt awkward and uneven. The production team's commitment to visually recreating the noir vibe couldn't save the film from its misjudged comedic tone, and upon release, Fatal Instinct was met with largely negative reviews. Although it failed to resonate with most audiences, the film did eventually gain a small cult following, largely due to its status as a "so-bad-it's-good" comedy. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: Ned Ravine is both a lawyer and a detective because, why not? He's caught in the middle of a web of utter nonsense: his wife's trying to bump him off for the insurance money, his psychotic mistress is obsessed with him, and his innocent assistant is head over heels for him. All while he's trying to solve crimes, and defend the people he's caught in court. The plot throws every classic noir trope into a blender, hits "chaos," and pours out a mad cocktail of mistaken identities, ridiculous schemes, and over-the-top seductions. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

Erotic thrillers are meant to be sexy, bloody, and fun. The best of them also deal with shifts in culture that people are anxious about: Fatal Attraction was about the threat of working single women, and Basic Instinct got into bisexual panic. A hot new erotic thriller takes on women's strength and capacity for rage: Love Lies Bleeding is an 80's fantasia of big muscles and big hair with steamy sexy scenes and thrilling plot twists. It follows the story of a bodybuilder named Jackie, played by Katy O'Brian, who falls madly in love with gym manager Lou, played by Kristen Stewart. Host Brittany Luse sat down with Katy O'Brian to talk about strong women and the fantasy of wielding the rage that lurks just under the surface.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
