How did Bruce become The Boss, and what did it cost him to get there? Laura Barton explores the extraordinary life story of Bruce Springsteen, taking a front-row seat at five important gigs to reveal the life behind the legend.Bruce's story continues in rural Holmdel, New Jersey, alone with a four-track tape recorder. He goes back into his childhood, drives the streets of his early years, searching for answers. Looking for meaning. The seminal album, Nebraska, is what comes out. What happens next is an unravelling. And then a rebuilding. The Bruce who returns is unrecognisable. "He's got muscles now. Does that mean we have to get muscles now?!" - Warren Zanes. The album Born In The USA, with the anthemic album track and hit single Dancing In The Dark, takes Bruce stratospheric. In October, 1985, after two years and 156 shows, the Born In The USA tour comes to a close at the Coliseum Los Angeles. Four sold out nights of 80,000 people. The final night is one of melancholy and of joy. And a foreboding of change to come. ~~~“I'm here tonight to provide proof of life to that ever elusive, never completely believable, particularly these days, us. How did Bruce become The Boss, and what did it cost him to get there? Laura Barton explores the extraordinary life story of Bruce Springsteen, taking a front-row seat at five important gigs to reveal the life behind the legend. Bruce's story begins in the small factory town of Freehold, New Jersey. His father, Douglas, is distant. The love from his Grandmother Alice is fierce. His life changes forever when he hears Elvis and The Beatles, and learns the guitar. Laura travels to 23rd January, 1971. Bruce is 21 years old. This wiry figure with long curly hair takes the mic at the Upstage Club, Asbury Park. There is a vast distance between this scruffy boardwalk town venue and the stadiums he will one day fill, but Springsteen has a plan. Off stage, Bruce is a shy and introverted teenager. But when he plays, the transformation is startling. People liken it to Bruce Banner turning into the Incredible Hulk. This is where he finds his congregation - his vision of community forms here.~~~“I'm here tonight to provide proof of life to that ever elusive, never completely believable, particularly these days, us. Secretly Society presents a three-episode mini-series about collaboration, friendship, and a community-driven project; originally formed by Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner in 2008, this is the magical and illusive tale of Big Red Machine. This series is narrated by music writer and broadcaster Laura Barton, including live interviews with Vernon, Aaron Dessner, Bryce Dessner, Sharon Van Etten, Anais Mitchell, and more. The conclusion to the story, for now. Big Red Machine has been a rejection of the music industry's expectations weighing upon Dessner and Vernon, but also a place of solace for the pair amongst their sometimes painful struggles with mental health. The pair take turns grounding each other through their successes and supporting during their lows, while writing songs like “Brycie” and “Hutch” that pay tribute to close-knit family and friends. The pool of collaborators ripples out ever-further, and new methods of working to complement each others' contributions carry on the experimental spirit of Big Red Machine.   Links:  Secretly Society Podcast Link Secretly Society Podcast Store Link Secretly Society General Information Link   Big Red Machine:  Big Red Machine on Instagram Big Red Machine on Facebook

‘For me, it's all about his authenticity'. Chris McCausland Kurt Cobain, lead singer, guitarist and songwriter of the band Nirvana became the voice of a generation and is to this day considered one of the most influential musicians in the history of alternative rock. His angst ridden, often politically driven lyrics challenged the conventions of the day and resonated with youth audiences around the world. He championed the underdog and stood up for all those who had ever felt excluded from the mainstream. Kurt's message resonated with comedian, actor and writer Chris McCausland, but so did his music. With its raw energy and Kurt's ‘take me as I am' performances, Chris found a rock band that delivered the authenticity he'd been searching for. Accompanied from New York by author, journalist and music specialist Laura Barton, Chris discusses the Great Life of Kurt Cobain, his music, his message, his sense of humour and why it's never too late to jump in a mosh pit. Presented by Matthew Parris Produced by Nicola Humphries

You can find it here: https://youtu.be/Gpyq0dPen20 ) ----------------------- You gaze out the window watching the snow-covered fields fly by as Christmas classics play on the radio. You had been reluctant to accept Clint Barton's invitation to join his family's Christmas, not wanting to intrude. However, when Kate Bishop accepted, taking Lucky the Pizza Dog along, you decided to join them. Beats spending Christmas alone in your New York apartment. Gravel crunched beneath the tires as Clint pulled the car into the driveway of a homely farm. You all climb out as Clint unloads wrapped presents from the trunk. “Coming?” he asks you and Kate, balancing the gifts in his arms as he makes his way up the porch. “Yeah,” the younger archer answers for both of you as she grips Lucky's leash. “Hey, you sure this is okay?” Kate asks, voicing your concerns. “Oh, I'm telling you, they are very excited to meet you.” Clint's words were confirmed by the flurry of excitement greeting them at the door in the form of three Barton kids. Introductions were exchanged as everyone was ushered in and out of the cold. Warmth settles into your bones from the crackling fireplace in the living room, encouraging you to remove your winter coat. “Brought home a couple strays,” Clint says to a woman who could only be Mrs. Laura Barton as he gestures to you and Kate. She welcomes you both with a warm embrace. Her hair smelled of fresh gingerbread, her bright smile was infectious, and her hug was filled with motherly invitation. You felt yourself relax by the welcome into their home and family Christmas. Tea, coffee, and hot chocolate were passed around. The heat of your mug seeps to your fingers. You settle on the couch next to Kate and watch the kids open their presents. You smile at Nate's squeal of delight. You divide your attention between the gift unwrapping and the movies playing above the fireplace. Elf, Kate's favorite, played first followed by Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, a fitting film, you think. Warm and cozy, the aches and pains from the past week melted from your body. You sink back into the couch with a sigh of contentment. Yep, this definitely beats being alone on Christmas. Despite your dark and bloody past with Ronin, you're grateful it led to spending the holiday with friends. ----------------------- ↫Connect With Me!↬ My Website (Containing my socials + Contact info + Idea submission forms + other awesome, free stuff!) https://sites.google.com/view/kaila-falcon ----------------------- ↫Disclaimer↬ None of these sounds, songs or images used to make this are mine. In this week's episode, Mark & Barney welcome the wonderful Laura Barton and learn all about her career as a star Guardian writer – and as an author and broadcaster.Laura talks about her travels in America, and about working with photographer Sarah Lee on the newly-published collection West Of West. The hosts ask her about her pieces on Bon Iver, Daniel Johnston and Riot Grrrl power – and more generally about her deeply personal approach to music writing.A new Sam Cooke box set prompts a conversation about the pin-up gospel star who crossed over to become an icon of "proto-soul" before his shocking and tragic death in 1964. A 2010 hymn to Sam by the legendary Lenny Kaye provides the platform for ruminations on the man's sublime voice and his immeasurable influence on everyone from Otis Redding to Rod Stewart.A clip from the late Andy Gill's 2005 audio interview with ex-Belle & Sebastian member Isobel Campbell is the catalyst for a discussion of the latter's collaborations with brooding grunge survivor Mark Lanegan. Having interviewed the Scots singer-songwriter when the duo's Ballad of the Broken Seas came out in 2006, Laura helps to place the pair in the tradition of such "beauty-and-the-beast" hook-ups as Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra.Mark talks us through highlights of the week's additions to the RBP Library, including pieces on the unsavoury Jonathan King (1971), the fabulous Freddie Mercury (1975) and David Bowie's personal tour of his London landmarks (1993). The episode concludes with discussion of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's just-announced Class of 2020 – with specific reference to the covert racism (not to mention misogyny) underpinning reaction to the inclusion of Whitney Houston…Many thanks to special guest Laura Barton, who is on Twitter @missbarton. West of West, by Sarah Lee with an introduction by Laura, is published by Unbound.Pieces discussed: Bon Iver, Daniel Johnston, Grrrl Power, Sam Cooke, Sam Cooker, Sam Cookest, Boyce and Hart, Jonathan King, Queen's Freddie Mercury, Beach Boys, Milli Vanilli, David Bowie, Kenickie, The Libertines, Beck and Big Mama Thornton. This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts.

It's Monday which means another brand new sparkly podcast episode! This interview like all of the others that have come before this, is important. In this episode I chat with Laura Barton who is an author of a book series called project Dermatillomania, Laura also works in communications for Canada BFRB which is a non-profit that looks at Body Focused Repetitive Behaviours such as skin picking. . For as long as I can remember I have picked my skin on my fingers, sometimes until they bleed. I do not like doing it, sometimes I don't even know that I am doing it. I think because it's been with me for so long I've not given it any attention and even hidden it from myself. I didn't have any awareness about it until seeing Liz Atkin's TedX talk called “Re-imagining Compulsive Skin Picking: Art for Recovery”. Then Laura reached out to me. . Talking to Laura on the podcast was the first time I had spoken about this in public with anyone but Laura's knowledge on the subject and her own experience with Dermatillomania gave me great comfort and made me think how useful it will be for anyone else that has been struggling with skin picking. Laura has offered me support outside of the episode and I have joined a great Facebook group around skin picking to help understand the disorder some more. . To hear more about Laura's experiences and her story check out episode 73 of Know Yourself on anchor.fm/knowyourself - Apple Podcasts - Spotify - Google Play Music - and much more. Don't forget to let me know your thoughts in the comments below and leave rating and a review on the podcast, it would mean the world to me
