Our guest is American painter, Mountain Brews and Richard Pictures band member, and Internet Radio Show host Jake Longstreth. Ezra Koenig is an unlikely evangelist for the Grateful Dead, and that's exactly why we brought him on the show. In this first episode of America's Dead, hear the Vampire Weekend frontman defend the wisdom of “hippie psychedelic nonsense” and reveal what has inspired him most as a songwriter. Plus in this episode, Koenig imagines that if Kurt Cobain were alive today, he too would be a Deadhead. “The Grateful Dead saved me,” says Dr. Varun Soni, Dean of Religious Life at the University of Southern California. And he's not alone. In this episode, Dr. Soni argues that the Dead are actually a religion, and we meet Sage, a student of Dr. Soni, whose encounter with the Dead's music at age 21 has helped guide both her gender transition and spiritual growth. “The Grateful Dead viewed the very idea of planning as being some kind of fascist concept” says Sam Culter, the Dead's tour manager from 1969 to 1974. Cutler is the guy who finally turned the Dead into a business, but it was an uphill battle the whole way. “The business model was made essentially by a kind of strange hippie default mechanism that worked in mysterious ways.” In this episode, stories from inside the strange hippie default mechanism. Emmett sits down with Sam Cutler and the stories get… pretty unbelievable. Margo Price is a true force in country music. Political, opinionated, an incredible creative talent. Her latest project is a new podcast from Sonos called Runaway Horses. Margo just released an amazing interview with the Dead's Bob Weir, and in this special feed drop, we're passing the reins to Margo to hear her interview in full. It all began with a bag of mushrooms… and a bolt of lightning. Today, Paul Stamets is the world's most famous mycologist (mushroom scientist) but we begin by going back to the fateful day when young Paul, loaded up on psilocybin, climbed a tree in the middle of a thunderstorm. In this episode, Paul's story is our gateway to learning about the long strange history of psychedelics in America, and how the Dead brought mushrooms mainstream. Emmett sits down with Mac DeMarco and members of the band Animal Collective, artists who are keeping the spirit of the Dead alive today – not just in the music they make, but in the community they cultivate. In this episode, we look at how bands today draw inspiration from the Dead, from live recordings to prolific touring.Credits:America's Dead is produced by work by work: Scott Newman, Jemma Brown, Kathleen Ottinger, Alex Kapelman, and Ben Montoya. In this episode, we're asking why these images have such staying power, and Emmett talks to LA streetwear label Online Ceramics, who's Dead-inspired tee shirts have introduced a whole new generation to the psychedelic era. Branford Marsalis is a world famous jazz saxophonist and three time GRAMMY Award winner. Then, in the early 90s, Marsalis joined the Dead onstage for a series of shows now widely considered to be the best of that era. "Dirty Projectors" started out as a solo project from founding member David Longstreth, who wrote, recorded and self-released the first two albums while he was studying music at Yale University. During his summer breaks he would go on tours throughout the USA, playing mostly in small rock clubs organized by DIY promoters who he had connected with via Myspace. It was during these early years that David would also connect with other musicians, in order to create a band and bring his albums to life on stage. The line-up has morphed drastically over the years, encompassing over 20 different individuals, but it was the experience of putting together the live band that inspired David and his co-musicians to continue the collaborations in the studio, and since then "Dirty Projectors" have very much put together music in a collaborative sense.Fast forward almost 20 years to 2020, and we see yet another line-up change. This time 5 full time members who were introduced to listeners by 5 separate EPs that dropped throughout 2020, together with cover artwork provided by David's brother Jake Longstreth. For the full story and our music picks, tune in to this week's installment of "Roots to Grooves"!To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

What was the scariest moment in a movie this year? Who was the most typecast actor? Which film was the most overrated? It's time to hand out the only movie awards that matter: the Teddies and the Jakies! Teddy welcomes Jake Longstreth back onto New Rankings to celebrate the very best films of 2017 (and also The Book of Henry, and also 47 Meters Down), plus they answer some other pressing questions along the way: Which actors won this year's Adam Driver award for "so ugly they're actually hot"? Was that firefighter movie (Only the Brave) just Republican porn, or was it actually kinda good? And why did Teddy mysteriously quit Boy Scouts as a youth? Why?!
Are you ready for some footbaw??? Just in time for the NFL playoffs (playoffs?!), Teddy welcomes his best man Jake Longstreth back onto New Rankings to draft their best fictional football squads, comprised of players from such classic gridiron tales as The Replacements, Friday Night Lights, Remember the Titans, and the Garbage Picking Field Goal Kicking Philadelphia Phenomenon. Who will draft Forrest Gump in the second round? Who will land not one but two different Keanu Reeveses to play quarterback? And who will panic-draft Air Bud and Keisha from Backyard Football before realizing that his team sucks as he melts into a puddle of tears? Find out, and vote for your favorite team: #TeamTeddy or #TeamJake!
