Two decades ago today, Animal Collective released their fifth album, a collection of "tongue songs" that proved to be a massive vibe shift and level-up that solidified the band's direction and put them on the cultural map. This week, Christian and Justin go deep on Avey Tare and Panda Bear's enduring masterwork Sung Tongs, the primordial siren song of innocence, friendship, love and peace. They discuss the evolution of this era of songs, the music of 2004, iconic Youtube clips, letting go, and which Outkast song is a spiritual cousin to the album. Can you believe this album is as far away from 2024 as 1984 was to 2004?

In this episode, we're thrilled to host Animal Collective, the iconic indie-psych band hailing from Baltimore. With over two decades of captivating audiences, their unique blend of indie rock and freak folk has left an indelible mark on the music world. After a five-year hiatus, the band made a triumphant return with "Time Skiffs" last year, and now they've followed it up with the highly acclaimed "Isn't It Now." In today's episode, we sit down with band member Avey Tare to explore the making of this new record. We delve into Avey Tare's eclectic musical upbringing, which significantly contributes to the band's diverse influences. Additionally, we discuss the intricate logistics of touring with four solo musicians and the band's future touring plans. Knowing full well that I've become the interviewer who asks about album names, I can't help but draw a parallel between Isn't it Now and Ram Daas. There's truth in the comparison, stemming from the band's evolving approach to music and the simple act of existing in the world. But there are countless other meanings to extract from those three words. Few things are as simple as they appear in Animal Collective land. David "Avey Tare" Portner joins us to discuss life inside and outside an ever evolving musical act. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Welcome to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions; this week on the show, we're joined by Jarvis Taveniere of Woods. You know his long running Woods band with Jeremy Earl of course—and Woodsist, their record label and Woodsist Festival, which returns September 23-24 upstate with Kevin Morby, Avey Tare, Cochemea, Tapers Choice, Ana Saint Louis, Natural Information Society, Kurt Vile, Scientist, DJ Aquarium Drunkard—that's our own Justin Gage—plus many more. The band also just released a glowing new album, Perennial, which finds the band in a gentle, rambling mode. Jarvis and host Jason P. Woodbury, alongside Willian Tyler and Sadie Sartini Garner, were all members of a book club through much of the pandemic, reading selections of authors like JG Ballard, Kiese Laymon, Eve Babitz and others. LIVE TRANSMISSIONS: On September 30th, we're hosting a live taping of Transmissions at Manly P. Hall's Philosophical Research Society with Matt Marble, discussing his fantastic book about Arthur Russell, Buddhist Bubblegum. Get more info here.

On today's episode, I talk to musician Dave Portner AKA Avey Tare of Animal Collective. Originally from Baltimore County, Dave met his future bandmates Josh, Brian and Noah in high school where they played music together, but it wasn't until they all found themselves in New York in the early-aughts that they officially became Animal Collective. The first album as Avey Tare, Spirit They've Gone, Spirit They've Vanished, also doubles as the first Animal Collective album, and since its release on FatCat in 2000, they've written 10 more albums, the latest of which, Time Skiffs was released on Domino last year. On his own, Dave has written and collaborated on over half a dozen albums and EPs, and his latest, 7s, came out just last week, also on Domino! Avey Tare sits down with Kyle Meredith to talk about Time Skiffs, the first Animal Collective album in six years. The musician aka David Portner takes us into the visual world the band have created for this set, in which linear time doesn't exist. Tare also touches on how the visual album Tangerine Reef influenced the new LP, and why he found himself looking back at their career as he entered the sessions. Elsewhere, he discusses how fans compare their current material to their earlier sounds, his knack for melody balanced with his love of minimalism, and what it means to be a band from America. He also lets us know about a companion record of songs written during the same sessions that will see the light of day soon. Ahoy....we set sail once again. This time we are digging into the solo projects of the loveable lad Avey Tare. Yes, Time Skiffs is now out, but whilst it sinks in, Michael and I traverse the highs and lows of Avey, from his first record through to Cows on Hourglass Pond. Highlights include: An interview with Animal Collective (yes!) Initial impressions of Time Skiffs Movie talk Skateboarding games
Noah Lennox, also known as Panda Bear, is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter who aside from his solowork creates and performs alongside musicians Avey Tare, Geologist and Deakin in the experimental pop band Animal Collective. The band made a name for themselves with their 2007 outing 'Strawberry Jam' and the 2009 follow-up 'Merriweather Post Pavillion', which is their most successful album to date. We spoke with Lennox about the new album 'Time Skiffs', injuring his hand, how the collective got started, his creative process, working in service of the songs, being guarded about lyrics, the song Prester John, a crossroads in the music industry, and a lot more! After the success of Person Pitch, Noah Lennox took those lessons learned with him back into the studio with the rest of Animal Collective to create another touchstone record of the 2000s. This time, the melodic electronica that felt more man than machine was refined and amplified to an infectious, hypnotic, and deeply human electronic record. The record improves even more on their trademark harmonies with Noah and Avey Tare sounding better together than ever, and the lyrical themes very much a continuation of Noah's lean toward introspection in Person Pitch. One of the greatest records from the 2010s that could only have spawned from the hive mind of Animal Collective, join us as we fawn and gush over the many reasons we love this record.Tracklist: Summertime Clothes Also Frightened Daily Routine Guys Eyes No More Runnin' Brother Sport Visit tiestatea.com and use promo code NOFILLER15 for 15% off at checkout. I sat down w live music enthusiast, blogger, and accessory crafter Julieanna Smith (AKA Groovy Julez), who owns the shop Feel Goods. Originally from New York, she now lives in the Twin Cities, and freelances for the blog Music in Minnesota. We sipped our morning joe as we discussed us meeting at an Avey Tare show, Jules' passion for EDM and camping festivals, her arts n crafts, the families you build from live music, and the fight still going from the social justice uprisings last summer. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ben-slowey/support
I sat down w electronic dream pop artist Lipsticism, who is based around the Chicago area. Her debut record "Emergency" came out in 2018. I had a few beers and she sipped coffee. We discussed Lipsticism's journey finding her sound between pop and experimental styles, losing childlike innocence as we get older, her tour w Avey Tare of Animal Collective, creating music when it's all that makes sense, and the new music she's working on as it follows "Emergency." I sat down w fellow music nerd Alec Vohnoutka, whom I met serendipitously through our shared love for experimental pop band Animal Collective. He lives in the Twin Cities. We had a few beers as we discussed how we first got into AnCo, our favorite AnCo songs, meeting Avey Tare and Deakin together, what else we've been listening to, and Alec meeting his girlfriend through the Collected Animals forum. This week on the Talkhouse Podcast, we’re celebrating artists who take music in unexpected and brilliant new directions. Tuesday’s show saw Tierra Whack and Nnamdi Ogbonnaya in conversation; today, we bring you a fantastic deep dive between Avey Tare of Animal Collective and Ishmael “Ish” Butler, aka Palaceer Lazaro in Shabazz Palaces, fka Butterfly of Digable Planets. Ish and Avey are massive fans of each other’s work — Animal Collective and Shabazz Palaces have even remixed tracks for each other. This convo takes in a lot: how seeing Animal Collective play live got Ish back into making his own records when he thought he was done with music; what artists they’re both vibing on rn; Ish’s goal to "elasticize minds" with his live shows; and the “secret sauce” that goes into writing Animal Collective and Shabazz Palaces songs. Check it out, and subscribe now to stay in the loop on future episodes of the Talkhouse Podcast. —Elia Einhorn, Talkhouse Podcast host and producer Today’s episode was co-produced by Mark Yoshizumi. Ish was recorded by Dan Arnes at The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. Avey was recorded by Adam McDaniel at Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville, NC. The Talkhouse Podcast’s theme song was composed and performed by The Range.
On Repeater this week, we talk with comedian, satirist, writer, and editor Taylor Garron (Reductress, Vulture) about Avey Tare Slasher Flick’s “Little Fang,” Taylor’s undying love for anything in the Animal Collective family, and how...
Since forming nearly two decades ago, the musical group Animal Collective has managed the remarkable feat of keeping the psychedelic pop of the 1960s fresh and relevant to a new generation of music lovers. Over the course of ten studio albums, the group, originally from Baltimore, Maryland, has explored both trippy disorienting soundscapes and gorgeous pop songwriting in equal measure. Last week we met up with the group's co-frontman Dave Portner — who performs as Avey Tare — to hear about the role of cannabis in his songwriting; beyond being great music to listen to high, we discovered that cannabis is truly baked into his songs' DNA. Portner is currently on the road behind a new solo album, Cows on Hourglass Pond. Featuring sweet melodies alongside dreamy spaced out arrangements, the record highlights everything that fans have come to love from his work. Listen in as Portner walks us through his history with cannabis, including the music that he first heard high, as well his favorite strains and the specific roles that cannabis plays in his songwriting.

In our 10th episode spectacular, we decided to talk about a band we know pretty well. No gaps in our knowledge, nope. Well except anything before 2007. And some of the EPs. And some of the solo stuff. Also what's an animal collective. Guest host Michael J aka Jake stops by!
We explore the experimental and unconventional sounds of Animal Collective with a look at their 2004 album Sung Tongs. Avey Tare and Panda Bear's unique use of harmonies and repetition on this album are what make it such a compelling experimental record. This album ultimately proves to be the blueprint and stepping stone for the sounds and techniques heard on their 2009 album Merriweather Post Pavillion, their most well-received and commercially successful release to date.
