This is the second part of my recent conversation with author Thomas Hischak regarding his new book, Song Of The Season — Outstanding Broadway Songs Since 1891. In this captivating book, Hischak looks back at the history of the Broadway musical by chronicling of every New York theater season from 1891 to 2022 and then audaciously selecting one single song as the song of that particular season. To facilitate this discussion, I selected one or two songs from each decade covered in the book for us to discuss. On this music-filled episode, we begin in 1938 with “September Song” from Knickerbocker Holiday and continue with his admittedly controversial selection of “I Enjoy Being A Girl” from Flower Drum Song (1958), “Do-Re-Mi” from The Sound Of Music (1959), a mind-blowing leap of only seven years to “Aquarius” from Hair (1968), and on through “All that Jazz” from Chicago (1975), “The Lambeth Walk” from Me And My Girl (1986), the title song from Ragtime (1998), "Omar Sharif" from The Band's Visit (2017), and the title song from Some Like It Hot (2022). Thomas Hischak retired from full time teaching in New York State and now teaches theatre part-time at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida, USA. Her work focuses on enhancing the brand experience for both students and visitors, leveraging the college's rich history and iconic architecture. In this interview, Samantha talks about historic tours, St. Augustine's tourism industry, and taking chances on people.   Historic tours   "You get to experience the brand not only through what their script is... but you also get to experience a student who is here working on their four-year education."   Samantha discusses how Flagler College's historic tours are a unique blend of education and tourism, allowing students to gain invaluable public speaking and storytelling skills. The tours are not just about showcasing the beautiful and historic campus; they also serve as a crucial recruitment tool for the college. By involving students as tour guides, the program offers a dual benefit—visitors get a glimpse of the college's rich history, and students gain hands-on experience that enhances their academic journey and prepares them for future careers.   St. Augustine's tourism industry   "We have always been members of the St. Augustine Attractions Association... we're kind of lucky that this area is so concentrated with attractions, but we're also willing to talk to each other."   Samantha highlights the collaborative spirit within St. Augustine's tourism industry, emphasizing the unique position Flagler College holds within this historic city. It is an honor to have Alex Mestres as the guest on this episode. She uses her vast experience working with the deaf and hard of hearing community to talk about the importance of being present in all communication, both in what you say and in how you listen. We expose you to some content that is probably new to many of you, but that can expand and potenitally reframe the way you view communication in all of your organizations, teams, and many other settings. Using her expertise with the deaf and hard of hearing community we discuss the Servant Leadership attributes of listening, empathy, and community building. This episode will get you thinking about how much noise is in your environment that blocks good communication, what positive communication practice you put in the drawer for use later on, and how we allow others to process. One communication method will never reach everyone in our organization and it is only as we learn to communicate in a language that is authentic to all the members on our team that we truly can achieve great results. There is so many applications for the information contained in this episode if we open our ears and hearts to hear the full message.  Alex Mestres was born and raised in Miami, Florida. Out of highschool she attended Miami Dade Community College where she focused on Early Childhood Education and American Sign Language. Alex then went on to  receiv a Bachelor's Degree at Flagler College in Elementary Education and Education of the Hearing-Impaired K-12. She began her career at the Debbie School, a program specifically geared towards support children with hearing loss. She was the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten teacher in the total communication classroom, a environment where content is presented in both spoken language as well as American Sign Language. After a few years at the school, Alex moved onto the public school system in Miami-Dade County . After the arrival of her second son, Alex went into administration at a local early learning center. She worked within a small church school then moved on to work with the Homestead Family YMCA. She eventually led there early childhood center and camp programs. After leaving the YMCA, she continued her career in early childhood, working as a curriculum coordinator and teacher at a large church school. As her boys grew she decided to go back into public school education and became the chairperson for Miami-Dade County Public Schools Deaf and Hard of Hearing Department. She spent time working with students and teachers as well as training on best practices for the profession. After leaving the public school, Alex opened her own consulting business specifically working with charter schools on supporting the deaf and hard of hearing students in their mainstream classrooms. She also works part-time for the University of Miami Children's Hearing Program as their education specialist. Her role is to counsel families on navigating their educational options when they have a child diagnosed with hearing loss. Alex presents locally and nationally on topics centered around working with this population. She also works with the boards of AGBell Florida as a member and AGBell National as a consultant. Alex also recently completed her Master's degree in the Applied Learning Sciences. Alex has been married to a City of Miami Firefighter for the past 29 years and they have two sons. Her oldest is married and they have a beautiful 1 ½ year old little girl. Her youngest is engaged to be married in December. We discussed other evidences for supporting theories that show remnants of European, and Moorish cultures being present in the "New World" centuries before Columbus, like the Windover Farm Bog people, The Underwater graves off the coast of the Manisota Key, near Venice FL. Longo shared research showing a phonetic connection between these cultures considered unrelated by the mainstream, as well as the odd similarities between several tribes in North America with Muscovites of Russia, ie St. Petersburg. Finally we learned about St. Augustine's amazing architecture, Flagler College, once the Ponce De Leon Hotel in particular is a "Modern" Megalith and cast out of Coquina Stone, which could have been poured in place like cement. Dr. Justin Capes, Ph.D., teaches Philosophy at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida, and has for a long time pondered questions about Free Will from every conceivable angle. Here, Dr. Capes dialogues with us about the field of metaphysics within contemporary philosophy, and specifically, the metaphysics of the human person and of human agency. Commonsensically, this brings up questions about moral responsibility and free will, namely, what is Free Will ? Given a correct definition, do we have Free Will ? How is Free Will properly and accurately defined ? Even asking these questions seems to presuppose that we have it, because otherwise we wouldn't freely ponder such things in the first place. If we are freely pondering, what are we doing ? (Can one ponder unfreely ?) Is there a point to asking such questions ? And could we do (or have done) otherwise ? Does that matter ? Why ? Justin takes us through some thorny issues in neuroscience and philosophy, trying to move the ball forward in coming to terms with what Free Will is, and what difference it makes to understand this and to be able to articulate it well. These discussions also help us to try our hand at these questions if for no other reason than to realize just how hard some of these issues are to master well, as well as how inescapable they are if you're paying attention. The Republican Professor is a pro-coming-to-terms-with-basic-metaphysics, pro-hearing-philosophers-speak-to-scientists, pro-free-will-understood-well, pro-getting-precursors-to-moral-responsibility-right podcast.
