Musical guest Jason Hawk Harris sings his beautiful songs as improv scene fodder. "1000 burritos, tacos, and Bud Lights came flying at me like the arrows in 300!" Andy talked about recording Andrew WK from a mobile truck, doubling vocals like Mahler, learning to listen, recording Cuban music, guitars, vocals, and tuning drums. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Andy Freeman who got his hands on a console at age 12 and at age 21 got his first job in audio, recording and editing voice over artists in Atlanta. In 2002, after a friend asked if he produced bands, Andy said yes. This was a lie. But he hasn't stopped producing and mixing bands since then, so I guess it was a good lie. Learning on the job at his own studio in Atlanta, he and his wife Malie [“Molly”] moved to San Francisco in 2008, then to Los Angeles in 2015, then to Nashville in 2017 where he works out of a full tracking and mixing space in his house. Andy doesn't hear music in genre, preferring the idea that there are only two kinds of music: good and bad. Consequently he's been able to work with just about anyone. Jason Hawk Harris, Ace Monroe, Leeann Skoda, Eisley, and lots of fun San Francisco bands you have never heard of. He also made a lot of live recordings in his time rambling around the country in a mobile recording truck with Bay Area Tone. They include Andrew WK, Carney, The Bravery, The Sounds, Niko Case… Anyway, if there's passion and determination, he wants to be involved. Oh, and he likes real stuff. Like real people in a real room playing real instruments while being really inspired by each other's presence. If you work with him, he will spend an awful lot of time talking about energy and flow and stuff like that. Because he wants to know who you are as an artist, he'll use words like “identity” and “impact” and “deliberate” and he will frequently ask you why you're doing what you're doing when you could be doing something else. He believes in tube amps, consoles, tape machines, analog hardware, and doing it the hard way. He will make a record in Pro Tools but he doesn't like it, and he refuses to learn how to program because let's face it, everybody else can already do better than he could anyway. He also doesn't like writing in the third person. He thinks it's weird. Importantly to me Andy teamed up with Mark Rubel in 2020 to create a GoFundMe page to help me save home studios in Music City, which we did. It was probably the greatest honor I've ever received in music. So thanks Andy! https://www.gofundme.com/f/nashville-says-039thank-you039-lij-shaw THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS! http://UltimateMixingMasterclass.com https://www.adam-audio.com https://www.native-instruments.com Use code ROCK10 to get 10% off! https://www.izotope.com Use code ROCK10 to get 10% off! https://gracedesign.com/ https://RecordingStudioRockstars.com/Academy https://www.thetoyboxstudio.com/ Get your MBSI plug-in here! https://www.makebelievestudio.com/mbsi Listen to this guest's discography on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4Xdwuuxil9TNDbnWErSZgW?si=c49306f760904440 If you love the podcast, then please leave a review: https://RSRockstars.com/Review CLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES AT: https://RSRockstars.com/468

If the main ingredients of a great Country song are love and loss, singer-songwriter Jason Hawk Harris's creative tank was overflowing when it came time to make his masterful new LP Thin Places. Part meditation on grieving the loss of his mother, career, and the global tragedy of the pandemic, and part raucous celebration of finding the joy of life despite those hardships Thin Places is a beautifully honest and sonically cinematic look at who we are at rock-bottom, our most ecstatic highs, and every point in-between. Tune in now to hear our chat with Jason about the making of Thin Places, finding a way to live sustainably as an artist, moving through life with grief, and much more. ------We're able to bring you great conversations like this and more because of your generous support. This week on the show - Z meets up with a cerebral Texas born roots rocker who has recently struck out on his own, poking one foot in the torn tinsel of a Houston honky tonk and another in a haunted California “Black Mirror” episode set in a tilted sci fi future - Jason Hawk Harris. While most songwriters hide behind walls and trapdoors of metaphor, Harris isn't afraid to openly process his recent family traumas and loss on his stunning and aptly titled first solo album “Love and The Dark” released by Bloodshot Records in 2019. Despite his youth, Jason has much to tell us and if this equally sensitive and swaggering sound is where the future of modern country music is headed? We're in.
Jason Hawk Harris released his debut album in 2019 on Bloodshot Records, the critically acclaimed “Love and the Dark”. Rolling Stone named “Phantom Limb” one of the 25 Best Country and Americana songs of the year. Though he currently resides in Los Angeles, Jason was born and raised in Houston, where he heard a lot of country music in his home. However the music of Queen led him to pursue training in classical composition as a teenager. The songs on “Love and the Dark”, many of which draw lyrical themes from personal stories of loss, pain and addiction, swing with the soul of country while being carried along by dynamic and orchestral arrangements; an intriguing and compelling combination. We discuss Jason’s creative process, including how some of his songs start out as a single unbroken line drawn on a sheet of blank paper; how he likes to “wrap a sad song in a happy jacket”; and one of his first musical projects, “Mr. Meticulous and the Sloppy Joes”.
It’s bonus songs for everyone on this top 10 of 2019! Also, Rachel has a hot tip for apartment cleaning that’s more effective than Mari Kondo. I got to catch up with Jason during Americana Fest yesterday morning and the conversation was so fun I decided to bump it up to release it immediately. We take a while to get to discussing music, but had a lot of fun discussing older films and the nuances of language. With an unlikely background, Harris is a singer/guitarist/songwriter who walks his own line, one that touches on Lyle Lovett’s lyrical frankness, John Moreland’s punk cerebralism and Judee Sill’s mysticism and orchestral sensibility. There’s even the literary and sonic audacity of an early Steve Earle, an outlaw unafraid to embrace harmony.Jason Hawk Harrishttps://jasonhawkharris.com/http://www.instagram.com/jasonhawkharrisStringjoyhttp://stringjoy.com/https://www.instagram.com/stringjoy/ Jackalope Brewinghttps://jackalopebrew.com/https://www.instagram.com/jackalopebrew/ Steven Dunnhttp://www.steven-dunn.com/http://instagram.com/stevedunnsbeard
