We had the pleasure of interviewing Amythyst Kiah over Zoom video!GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter Amythyst Kiah shares her new album, Still + Bright via Rounder Records. Produced by Butch Walker (Taylor Swift, Green Day and Weezer) and recorded at his Nashville studio, the 12-track album is a vital new addition to Kiah's body of work, one largely dedicated to exploring the struggle and joy of true self-discovery. While her 2021 Wary + Strange details her grief, anger, and abandonment, Still + Bright is her liberation from the events of her earlier life, examining the vast expanse of her inner world, passions, self-exploration and realization, with a darkly cinematic twist. The project – which Rolling Stone hailed is “poised to be a major moment for the east Tennessee-raised singer-songwriter” – expands upon the wild definitions of Americana music. From gothic love songs with haunting vocals (“Silk and Petals feat. Butch Walker”) to a furiously stomping fantasy-inspired folk epic (“I Will Not Go Down” feat.Billy Strings"), or an ode to meditation laced with lush mandolin lines and lovely fiddle melodies (“S P A C E”), the album affirms her as an artist of both daring originality and uncompromising depth. The album is a collision of her love of indie rock, garage guitars and symphonic metal, flawlessly melded with the visceral lyricism and songwriting she's renowned for in the roots community. The project – which features collaborations with S.G. Goodman, Billy Strings and Avi Kaplan (Pentatonix) – also marks a complete transformation in Kiah's songwriting process: her first time opening up her approach and working with co-writers on an album. The album features co-writes with punk legend Tim Armstrong, Sadler Vaden (guitarist/vocalist for Jason Isbell's 400 Unit) and Sean McConnell (Brittney Spencer, Bethany Cosentino).Kiah is currently on the road on her Still + Bright Tour, plus she recently was announced as direct support for select dates of Larkin Poe's The Bloom Tour.About Amythyst Kiah:With an unforgettable voice that's both unfettered and exquisitely controlled, the Tennessee-bred singer/songwriter is a “fantastic fingerpicker, dynamo singer and profound songwriter [who] defies all sorts of stereotypes” (Guitar Player). Her 2021 release of Wary + Strange earned glowing features and reviews from The New York Times, NPR Morning Edition, Pitchfork, and Rolling Stone, plus performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and CBS Saturday Morning. Kiah is also a member of Our Native Daughters—an all-women-of-color supergroup whose standout track “Black Myself” (written by Kiah) earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best American Roots Song. She recently joined Iron & Wine on their summer tour, and has shared stages with The Who, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, CAM and more. We want to hear from you! Singer-songwriter Bethany Cosentino has reinvented herself over and over again and in the process helped define the indie sound of the aughts. Bethany first appeared on the charts with the group Best Coast in 2009. The band's album ‘Crazy for You' charted on Billboard to significant buzz and continued to stake their place in the lo-fi pop music scene of the 2010s. Yet, after over a decade of recording and touring, Best Coast went on hiatus in 2023, and Bethany launched her solo career with her album ‘Natural Disaster.” Isa Nakazawa sits down with Bethany to discuss how her chart is perfectly suited to aid her as she adapts. Her Scorpio Sun is there to help her ask the right questions and her Cancer Rising allows her to intuit the best path. But whatever life throws at her, Bethany's Sagittarius Moon allows her to spring to her next adventure
Everything Will Be Alright in the End Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine Two songs into Everything Will Be Alright in the End, Rivers Cuomo sings "we belong in the rock world," a repudiation of the big beat experimentation of Raditude, a 2009 record that found Weezer working with such pop producers as Dr. Luke and Butch Walker. Weezer fans eager for Pinkerton, Pt. 2 are often quick to bristle at Cuomo's experimentations, so when the guitarist sings that they're "rockin' out like it's '94," he's not only not lying -- they went so far as to once again hire Ric Ocasek, the producer of the group's debut, to helm this ninth studio album -- but he's reassuring his audience that he's left all those pounding dance beats behind. The weird thing is, Weezer already shook off the ghost of Raditude via 2010's quickly released indie Hurley, so the emphasis on the group returning to rock feels a little odd, but Everything Will Be Alright in the End does trump its immediate predecessor by being bigger, bolder, slicker, and stickier than Hurley. Some of this is indeed due to the presence of Ocasek. His exacting production, anchored as much in pummeling arena rock as new wave pop, polishes and preserves Cuomo's quirks, but it's also true that Rivers has decided to indulge in his eccentricities once again. Take away the woolly mammoth-sized guitars and "Back to the Shack," with its overt references to "In the Garage," and Everything Will Be Alright in the End doesn't feel especially like early Weezer, not with the dexterous syncopation of "I've Had It Up to Here" providing a midpoint palate-cleanser and a neo-prog rock suite concluding the proceedings. By having the record follow these twisty detours, Cuomo provides a counterpoint to the classicist pop Weezer pursue elsewhere, but even such succinct, sculpted pop as "The British Are Coming," "Ain't Got Nobody," "Cleopatra," and "Go Away" (the latter a duet with Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino) never feels like a desperate scramble back home. Rather, a feeling of acceptance underpins Everything Will Be Alright in the End: there's a sense that Weezer made another record of massive, hooky rock not only because that's what the fans want but because they know it's what they do best. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/comics-in-motion-podcast/message

As we near the end of 2023, the time has come for Steven and Ian to revive their most sacred annual tradition: The Indiecasties! Like the Oscars, the Indiecasties goes long every year, so we actually are splitting it up into two episodes. (Part two drops next week.) Before that, however, the guys do a quick Sportscast about a wild week in Wisconsin-based athletics, including a Packers loss to Tommy DeVito and Giannis losing his cool against the Indiana Pacers over a lost game ball. Steven and Ian also address the viral TikTok video by Bethany Cosentino about her disappointment over the reception to her 2023 solo debut album, Natural Disaster, and the long tail of Peak Indie disappointment (6:10).Then it's on to the Indiecasties (19:00)! There are five categories in this episode: Most Valuable Annoying Music Story (21:45), The Album Cycle Of The Year (28:33), The Feel-Good Story Of The Year (35:15), The Most 2023 Album Of 2023 (40:47), and the Most Hyped Album That Turned Out To Be Actually Good (47:48). Who won? And who "won" (since winning some of these categories doesn't feel like a victory)? Listen and find out!New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. The vocalist and guitarist for Best Coast strikes out on her own with Natural Disaster.
Ira and Louis break down Lizzo's lawsuit, Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Aniston's social media drama, Survivor legend Cirie Fields joining Big Brother, and director William Friedkin's legacy. Plus, they play an IMDb themed game of celebrity called Known For where they guess a celebrity's most popular credits. And Bethany Cosentino joins to discuss her new solo record Natural Disaster, American mall culture, and more.
"Natural Disaster" is the solo debut album by the leader of Best Coast
Bethany Cosentino, fka Best Coast, is a musician from Glendale, CA. Her debut solo record, Natural Disaster, is out today. We chat about getting a nice pump, overall-wearing cronies, our show in Toronto is tonight, her mom used to make her kombucha, being proposed to at The Americana, she defends her built-in straw having hydro flask, the pleasures of getting something on sale, we try to figure out which actor-slash-musician she's had a session with, switching to solo mode, morning pages, our connection to cows, being a sort of real estate mogul, and she steamrolls sync-talk to head straight for the pills. twitter.com/BethanyCoast twitter.com/donetodeath twitter.com/themjeans Learn more about your ad choices. Bethany Cosentino sat down with Carmel Holt back in May on the day her solo debut Natural Disaster was announced. It was her first interview about the SHERO's Journey that led to breaking away from Best Coast to record this album, and now that the album release day is finally here, you're invited to take a deep dive with Bethany and Carmel discussing the complexities of being a musician who wants to be a mom, the roots of Bethany's feminism, and finally finding confidence in her voice as a singer and solo artist.
If you have plans to meet Bethany Cosentino and she's not on time, look outside. There's a good chance she's out there writing. Cosentino loves to write in her car—when it's not moving, of course. She gets great ideas just sitting in it. “I'll be late to things because I've been sitting in my car for too long. I'll get there early or on time and then just sit there,” she told me on this episode of the podcast. This is my third time interviewing Cosentino (the others were 2010 and 2015). Each has been so enjoyable because her answers were always different and always so expansive. There's a reason for that: each album embraces a different process. Cosentino wrote one in front of a TV on mute and another in front of a big window. She wrote a good chunk of her debut solo album Natural Disaster on the floor.
Join us on the pod as we welcome California native Bethany Cosentino to the show! You may know her as one-half of the beloved indie rock band Best Coast, whose scuzzy surf rock and dreamy chords captured hearts throughout the 2010s. However, during the pandemic, Bethany took a musical soul-searching journey, leading to her brilliant debut solo record, Natural Disaster. This collection of songs showcases a new sonic landscape inspired by icons like Stevie Nicks and Sheryl Crow. In today's conversation, we delve into Bethany's decision to pause Best Coast, her collaboration with Butch Walker on the new record, and whether we can expect to see her down under in Australia soon.Bethany Cosentino: Instagram / SpotifyPurchase Natural Disaster here. Thanks again to Bethany Cosentino for her time. Bethany Cosentino describes her new album as “a coming-of-age story about a 36-year-old woman reclaiming her life and what matters against the landscape of the world ending.” That last bit of that description is hard to miss and indeed climate anxiety figures heavily in the record but let's not look past the middle part of the description, the part with the reclaiming life and what matters. In this fun and insightful interview, Bethany talks about recently being diagnosed with ADHD just a few weeks ago and how it's helping her gain insight on many elements of her life. She also discusses the photo she keeps of herself as a young child, back when she was a child actor in commercials, and how it serves as a reminder that taking care of herself today means also taking care of that same kid.Bethany's new album, Natural Disaster, is out July 28, 2023. Would you believe us if we told you there was a moment in 1995 when some people wondered out loud if Anaheim was the new Seattle? To find out how this happened, join Yasi and this week's returning guest Bethany Cosentino as they dig deep into their SoCal roots and traverse the career of Orange County's No Doubt. From their late 80's formation to mid 90's explosion and eventual early aughts pop renaissance, No Doubt emerged as one of the signposts for alternative music at the end of the 20th century. Tune in as we retrace that journey from the beginning to present day.
Doing TV guide crossword puzzles, Camping, and installing home security systems. Bobb Bruno (Best Coast) "Best Coast‘s is a Los Angeles rock duo consisting of Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno. After a year of releasing 7-inch and cassette singles, they released their debut in 2010, Crazy for You, which established their lo-fi west coast sound, influenced by a Beach Boys vibe with East Coast 60s girl groups such as the Ronnettes and Shangri-Las. The album was met with incredible commercial success, and was named one of the best albums of 2010 by Pitchfork, with the single “Boyfriend” listed as one of the “150 Best Tracks of the Past 15 Years” by NME. Heaps of critical praise also came from New York Times, Spin, Paste, Nylon, Rolling Stone and The Guardian."
We're back! At Bandsplain, all we wanna do is have some fun, and Yasi had the feeling she wasn't the only one. So this week, friend of the show Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast joins us to make the case for Sheryl Crow. In 1986, Sheryl's winding road began when she left small town Missouri for Hollywood, where she toured with Michael Jackson, scrapped her own debut album, and survived off trail mix until her breakthrough Tuesday Night Music Club put her on the map. Bethany and Yasi uncover the tragedies and successes of Sheryl's story as she spent the next few decades navigating the underbelly of celebrity and the mess of music media while becoming one of the quintessential songwriters of her time. Today Girlpuppy's Becca Harvey joins me to talk about Best Coast's hugely influential debut album ‘Crazy for You'. We talk about discovering the album amidst a sea of yacht rock and top 40 country music, being the same age Bethany Cosentino was when this record came out, how music exists as a time capsule, how this album defined California for a new generation, how the ‘quiet ones' in music duos like Bobb Bruno can be underrated and more. Plus, we take a left turn into a Taylor Swift cul-de-sac and tease a rematch on the album ‘Red', and get inside Becca's hopes and anxieties as she prepares to release her EP and go on her first ever concert tour.

This week Katie is joined by Bethany Cosentino who is a song writer and lead singer of Best Coast. Bethany shares the contrast of tour life vs spending a year at home connecting with herself. She’s discusses mental health, how therapy has become her greatest tool and of course song writing was a form of therapy. Bethany being a female art for over 10 years has a lot to say about the sexism in the industry and how it has affect her, from reading reviews, performing on stage and how she has reclaimed her authenticity and learned to not give a fuck what people think. She also share some of her favorite tour memories that include touring with Paramore and opening for Green Day. Bethany is a rockstar with a power house voice and you are just going to love her!!! The affection that Best Coast's singer, songwriter and guitarist, Bethany Cosentino, has for suburban chain restaurants is not ironic. A musician who's (almost) always on the road (thanks, quarantine), she finds it comforting to experience the same decor, menu and flavors no matter what city she's in. Bethany's favorite chain of all is The Cheesecake Factory, so host Rachel Belle chats with chief culinary officer and executive Vice President, Donald Moore, about how the restaurant's menu expanded from a small cafe in 1978 to the mammoth 250 item, 21 page tome we know today. He shares behind-the-scenes R&D secrets, like how simply tweaking the name of a burger can make it a best seller, and reminisces over dishes he loved and painstakingly developed...but nobody ordered. Bethany and Rachel also dive into The Internet's favorite topics: cats and pizza! Treat yourself to Best Coast's wonderful new album, Almost Tomorrow and support artists! Follow along on Instagram where you can join Rachel's Quarantine Cooking Club!
The prophetic Indie-rock singer/musician/writer Bethany Cosentino from the rock duo Best Coast joins Laura and Johnnie on the first Zoom recording of the quarantine to discuss their new album "Always Tomorrow." Bethany reveals the impact of her own fight for sobriety on her music, and she shares what it was really like behind-the-scenes with band partner Bobb Bruno during the Best Coast 2020 tour to promote their new album. She and Laura also discuss the origins of the #MeToo movement in the Alternative and Indie music worlds, and Bethany explains what it was like for her to be thrust into the spotlight for her outspoken words about a certain publicist. In this episode, you’ll also meet Bethany’s Insta-famous cat Mr. Snacks and her YouTube sensation Ms. Josie the dog. The Los Angeles singer-songwriter calls Kyle Meredith to detail how she finally found her path forward. She also shares her deep love and appreciation for '80s-era Fleetwood Mac, her fandom for the Deftones, and what it’s like to play a Bernie Sanders rally. What does it take to find happiness? For Best Coast frontwoman Bethany Cosentino, it had a lot to do with getting sober. She’d spent much of her 20s self-medicating as she dealt with mental health issues and the sudden success of the band’s first album, Crazy For You. It wasn’t working, though: as she sings in the song "Everything Has Changed" off the band’s latest album Always Tomorrow: "I used to drink nothing but water and whisky, now I think those were the reasons why I used to fall deep down in a hole." The chorus to that song, however, is "Everything has changed/I like it this way." And it’s the optimism and self-realisation in that sentiment that drives much of Always Tomorrow. In this interview Bethany talks about getting sober and the events leading up to it. She also talks about her journey from a spotlight-loving kid doing TV commercials to high school dropout playing clubs around LA, and how she navigated her way to Best Coast.
Why Not Both is an exploration of how our multiple passions shape our identity, hosted by musician and therapist Pam Shaffer. For our second season, we partnered up with Under The Radar to explore the lives of musicians, writers, actors, and creatives. Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast joined us this week to chat about how getting outside of her own head helped break the writer’s block she encountered before ultimately crafting her upcoming album Always Tomorrow, which comes out on Feb 21st. Ranging from political advocacy to getting sober to discovering the best menu hacks at the Cheesecake Factory, Bethany’s journey shows that sometimes the best way to get to your goal is to set your sights on the journey instead of the destination. In 2009 Bethany Cosentino left college in NYC because she missed California. The move inspired her to contact an old friend named Bobb Brunno and together they started Best Coast. Within a year the band had essentially taken over the internet. You could not go to ANY blog without seeing something about Best Coast. Since then the duo have become a fixture in American indie music. They play large festivals, TV shows, and bought houses from the band alone. I've always found Best Coast's massive and completely unexpected success fascinating so I relished the opportunity to have Bethany on the show. She's a down to earth person with a great outlook on life. She also recommended that I go to therapy.
"Maybe I just have had enough," says Bethany Cosentino, frontwoman of the California band Best Coast and all-around feminist badass to anyone who's been paying attention to women's issues in the music industry this past year. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Bethany Cosentino, the frontwoman of Best Coast, once tweeted, "Dude, No Joy is the best band ever. Two hot blonde girls just shredding away. Sooooo amazing." I had no idea what to expect when I climbed into the Montreal shoegaze band's deluxe tour van. It quickly become clear while talking with the core of No Joy (Jasamine White-Gluz and Laura Lloyd) that nothing would be held back. This interview has it all, including: air-conditioned butts, Nashville (the TV show), spontaneous dance parties, tense moments, murderous bass players, bands that suck, amp genius, gay husbands, Sophie B. Hawkins "Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover", the stink eye, and more. You'll have to listen. Tracks played on the show... 1) No Joy, More Faithful (2015) "Everything New" 2) No Joy, Wait to Pleasure (2013) "Hare Tarot Lies" 3) No Joy, More Faithful (2015) "Moon in my Mouth" 4) No Joy, More Faithful (2015) "Remember Nothing" ALL songs CANCON
