It's our first annual, definitely real and permanent, mark-it-on-your-calendar-for-January-2026 feature: Danuary, a celebration of singer-songwriter Dan Wilson! You might know him (and love him) from his band Semisonic (FYI, all of Feeling Strangely Fine slaps, not just "Closing Time", and you should revisit it), but did you know he's written lots of songs for other artists? Learn this and more in this inaugural Danuary episode!! To kick off Danuary, we review "Holiday (What Do You Want?)" performed by Mike Doughty and Rosanne Cash (but written by Dan Wilson, of course), followed by "What a Year for a New Year" by (who else???) Dan Wilson. The ranking music in this episode is "Busting Up a Starbucks" by Mike Doughty.

It was two years into a vicious cycle of depression and Mike Doughty was falling apart. He was taking more Ambien than he had been prescribed, importing huge boxes of the stuff from India, waking up to find packs of cigarettes, candy wrappers, and pizza boxes with no memory of leaving his Memphis home to make such purchases. He was convinced something was deeply wrong with his heart even though every doctor said there wasn't. Finally, he checked into an in-patient facility that turned out to be wonderful and productive. Then he checked out. Then Mike, a recovering addict, started drinking heavily and smoking weed. Then he checked back in again. Mike Doughty is showing improvement now and talks about his treatment, his recovery, and touring again with his band Soul Coughing again 24 years after a bitter breakup.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. ED NOTE: This is from 2021, before this was a podcast and I was posting the video interviews to YouTube. I've taken the audio from that interview and turned it into podcast form. As you can tell at the beginning, we did this in the middle of the pandemic, hence our discussion about the creative process during COVID.Mike Doughty believes that discipline is a necessary part of the songwriting process. Doughty made his name as the founder of Soul Coughing, but he's had a prolific career as a solo singer/songwriter.  “I believe in discipline and the idea of working every day. I do like to look back at the end of the day with a sense of accomplishment.”  That feeling of accomplishment comes after some consistent journaling each morning and evening. It's decidedly vintage: he uses an IBM Electric typewriter in the morning (“The blank white page is filled with light and hope) and a 1983 Apple IIe computer at night (“The glowing green has a definite night vibe.”). And he saves those evening journal entries on a five inch floppy disk.

The LP was produced and mixed by Beastie Boys collaborator Mario Caldado, Jr., who worked with the duo on previous releases.  “It's a dream, and a groove, and its language is an object,” writes author Rick Moody in an essay accompanying the album, “one that leads beyond where Doughty started, into a life of greater improvisation, the aleatory, the migratory, the dilatory, hand signals, dropping in and dropping out the kid goes for broke, and here makes one of the great records of his life, a thing of its time, a thing of another time, a thing that makes dreams out of time, and a thing of great beauty, and, let it be said, acceleration, here it is the third of three, like hypothesis, antithesis, synthesis, GHOST OF VROOM 3.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's hard to believe it's been over 20 years since Wheatus released their debut album and still ubiquitous single "Teenage Dirtbag.” Yes, that's right - Dirtbag is no longer a teenager. In honor of this anniversary, Wheatus are releasing a new and expanded edition of their now classic debut album. Says Brendan B Brown, “We found demos of ten more songs from throughout the band's history, that had such an album-one vibe that they never made it on to our more recent records. So now we're giving them a proper chance to be heard. The twenty-song version of the album will feature the originally-conceived track listing and sequence, plus the extra ten songs that have finally found a home on a record.” Pandemics notwithstanding, the band continues a seemingly endless tour cycle. 2019 took Wheatus on a coast-to-coast, almost entirely sold-out tour of America opening for (and then collaborating with) Mike Doughty on his Ruby Vroom 25th Anniversary shows. That tour culminated in a super-special sold-out hometown headline show where the “classic” line-up of Wheatus reunited for one night only – their first time on stage together in 18 years. After that, the current line-up flew to South Africa to play some festivals, and then headed to Europe and the UK for another six weeks of touring. 2021 saw the band travel all over America, supporting Everclear, Hoobastank & Living Colour on the Summerland Tour.2022 saw the band explode back into the mainstream with the "Teenage Dirtbag" trend going hugely viral across social media, with over a BILLION views in less than a month. The song has been shared & celebrated by Lil Nas X, Brooke Shields, Paris Hilton, Madonna, Alice Cooper, Jon Bon Jovi, Chevy Chase, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mark Ruffalo, Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera, Heidi Klum, Lady Gaga, Sammy Hagar, Nick Kroll, Mark Ronson, Lupita Nyong'o, LL Cool J, Tony Hawk, Vitoria Beckham, Machine Gun Kelly, Anderson Paak, Jessica Alba, Mick Fleetwood, Millie Bobby Brown, Sheryl Crow, Chris Pratt, and Jamie Lee Curtis... to name a very select few.The future, as always, remains uncertain. But the band looks forward to many more shows in the very near future, including visits to every corner of the earth that's interested in hosting them.Find out more here: https://www.wheatus.com/home

Thank you for coming on this journey with me and enjoy my fruitful conversation with the great Madden Klass. This episode is also sponsored by Waves Audio. This podcast would take me soooo much longer to edit if it wasn't for the Waves Vocal Rider plugin. It "rides" the fader in real-time and keeps both my and my guest's audio at a consistent level without the need to over compress. Radio Friendly Unit Shifters!
Season 2 Episode 3 - Jesse Barnett

Radio Friendly Unit Shifters!

This week, we're thrilled to be joined by a veteran of AAA radio promotion, Jesse Barnett! We talked about a wide array of topics, from how he started in the music biz at A&M Records during the heyday of Sheryl Crow, Blues Traveler & The Gin Blossoms, to how he started his own company in 2005. We of course delved into what the "Emerson Mafia" is all about, and how after graduating college, he actually was a TV ad copywriter briefly for a well-known firm in L.A. It was cool to reminisce about how we both started in the AAA format around the same time in the 90s when artists like Fiona Apple & Alanis Morissette & Semisonic were taking over the world, and here we are in 2020, when all 3 of them have made big comebacks that Jesse has been involved in on the radio promo teams. He's worked closely with independent artists like Mike Doughty & Ingrid Michaelson, pop-crossover success stories like Michael Franti & Passenger...and, oh yeah, he got to work the surprise album from the singular sensation known as Taylor Swift. He has a whole slew of great things in store for 2021, only some of which can he divulge here now. I also admire Jesse for taking up photography as a hobby within the past decade, especially since he got so good so quickly! We even talked about cool record stores, cool Bay Area multi-band mini-festivals in the 80s, and what it's like raising a theater kid (I've got a 6-year-old who is well on his way)...so yeah, we covered a LOT of ground! Be advised, Jesse comes from the Attaway school of podcast guesting, so there are some naughty words here & there. But it's only rock'n'roll, right?

He has participated in several group and solo shows in galleries, restaurants and coffee shops.   “I deal with color on an intuitive level. I pick colors in the moment with a digital pallet of infinite color choices. My tools lend to an “in the moment”  flow.  With digital art I will have a color appear in my head first and then I add it to the design. I often combine unusual colors that create a distinct vibration and energy to the design.  The same is true for my mixed media work.  My studio has paint tubes scattered all over my work space. The piece I'm working on will in a way  “call”  to the color that needs to be added next.” https://dougbale.bigcartel.com/ https://society6.com/dougbale You can follow Doug's art on Instagram: @dougbale     Paul Krauss MA LPC is the Clinical Director of Health for Life Grand Rapids, home of The Trauma-Informed Counseling Center of Grand Rapids. Ding Dong! Who is it?  The last episode of the year! Why, come in, won't you? Thank you, I/it will! On this installation of How Was Your Week, musician, songwriter, former Soul Coughing-frontman and author MIKE DOUGHTY is here to discuss his new memoir, THE BOOK OF DRUGS. Also covered in this very excellent interview: what happened when drugs no longer worked versus how great it was when they did, Mike's contempt for his former bandmates, the myth of rock-bottom when it comes to addiction, and what the horrible term "corn-cobbing" means. Also, Julie recaps a particularly odd and disturbing episode of DINERS, DRIVE-INS AND DIVES, digests rich foods on-air, and bemoans the GOOP app. Plus! Mariah Carey's work ethic! Anthony Weiner's devilish wish! Candle-eating dogs! And some exciting details about the February 2nd announcement we've teased you about in the past. A show that's surely "WINNING," in that it leaves 2011 behind with style and grace. Enjoy it!
