It's a powerful biological response that has preserved our species for millennia. But now it may be keeping us from pursuing strategies that would improve the environment, the economy, even our own health. So is it time to dial down our disgust reflex? You can help fix things — as Stephen Dubner does in this 2021 episode — by chowing down on some delicious insects. At this point, Shy One might be familiar to most music fans as one of the hosts of NTS's daily breakfast show, Soup To Nuts, where she helps listeners across the UK and Europe settle into their morning routines with an eclectic and soulful selection of dance music and downtempo. But the London artist has been around a lot longer than that, with a discography that goes back well over a decade. She started releasing music as a regular on Scratcha DVA's label, and it was there that she sketched out a recognizable but impressively varied approach rooted in her home base of London. On her records, Shy One sometimes feels like London incarnate, synthesizing the histories of Black British dance music—drum & bass, grime, UK funky, broken beat, jazz, you name it—into one syncretic and immensely appealing sound. But her music glows with the warmth of American deep house, too, which lends it a timeless, ageless quality that has proven immensely appealing. She furthers this mission with Private World, a party she started with Ruby Savage. The name kind of says it all: she's inviting you to her own personal space, but what awaits is a whole wide world of music and culture. Her RA Podcast feels like a hybrid between a club DJ set and her morning show, and here, she zeroes in on a the lineage of American house music from the '90s and beyond, featuring tracks from the likes of Green Velvet, Marcellus Pittman, Roy Davis Jr., Wbeeza, Jay Daniel and more, plus a spotlight from Baltimore club king DJ Technics. It's patient and easygoing but perfect for a small dance floor (or a livingroom party), focused but stylistically diverse. It's everything we've come to expect from an artist like Shy One, who weaves stories and histories with her DJ sets, and does it effortlessly, too. @shyonebeats Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/911

In this episode Francesco talks with Lisa Daniel about the importance of inclusion of spouses in a Family business. Lisa joined the Lodge family in 1994 when she married 5th generation family member Jay Daniel and is a very active volunteer with the Joseph Lodge Family Council. As Lisa shares, being a spouse who married into the family brings a fresh perspective without the influence of past emotional issues. We also discuss the importance of allowing the NxtGen to be themselves and not be clones of the current generation. Lisa talked about how their family council was developed and the role it plays within the family and business. Her advice for families, simple....be inclusive of all.
Ep 52. How To Develop a Family Council with Lisa & Jay Daniel of Lodge Cast Iron Join us for one of our biggest episodes yet as Lisa & Jay Daniel* of Lodge Cast Iron (Lodge Manufacturing) talk with us about how to create a family council, catch some truly precious stories of how the Lodge family stays close and how their brand evolved from it's humble beginnings. You may also catch how excited Michael is, now that he learned how to season his cast iron pans. Share this episode with others! Our Guests Lisa Daniel* President & COO, Intechgrate Systems Family Council Volunteer & 5th Generation Spouse, Lodge Cast Iron Lisa and her husband Jay live in Sarasota, Florida where they own and operate Intechgrate Systems, an IT services company that they founded together 21 years ago. Their 3 children have been raised surrounded by both family & business values. Their youngest daughter is now a college freshman, so Lisa uses her newfound “empty nest time” working on Family Council projects for Lodge Cast Iron. Lisa joined the Lodge family in 1994 when she married 5th generation family member Jay Daniel. She is very active with the Joseph Lodge Family Council. The Family Council has spearheaded projects that include a secure family web portal, a digital interactive family tree, family archive videos, quarterly newsletters, online family happy hours and annual family gatherings. The group is currently working on an education plan that will include topics about both the family and the business. Lisa was born and raised in a small town in Pennsylvania as part of a very large family. She and her 8 siblings are very close and have found ways to stay connected even though they are now very geographically dispersed. Family values have always been important to Lisa, and she is lucky enough to share those values with Jay's family. Lisa is very passionate about open communication between family, celebrating the accomplishments of individual family members, bringing all generations of the family together and capturing family history. Jay Daniel* Jay Daniel is the CEO of Intechgrate Systems, an IT services company that he and his wife Lisa founded together 21 years ago. In 2007 he was elected to the board of another family business, Lodge Manufacturing. The cast iron cookware company was founded in 1896 by Jay's great, great grandfather, Joseph Lodge. During his time on the board, Jay has served or chaired each of its committees. He has helped guide the successful completion of several objectives in recent years, including the adoption of an updated Stock Restriction Agreement, introduction of an annual share valuation report, and the establishment of the Joseph Lodge Family Council. Perhaps most importantly, Jay co-chaired the ad-hoc committee which navigated the leadership succession between 4th generation family members and the company's first non-family CEO and executive team. Throughout its 125-year history, Lodge has remained committed to its employees and the South Pittsburg, TN community where its foundries are located. The same is true of much younger Intechgrate Systems and its support of the Bradenton & Sarasota, FL community. Jay is proud of what his family and these businesses have accomplished and is enthusiastic about his family's future. --- *not affiliated with Lincoln Financial Group Michael Palumbos is a registered representative of Lincoln Financial Advisors Corp. For the 23rd Avenue Red Podcast we present Manchester-based DJ Rikki Humphrey, a notorious crate digger and a stylistically diverse DJ who does not identify with genre boundaries when considering his musical selections. His taste for deep, underground House and Techno was founded on listening to old Radio One Essential Mixes and his instinctive ear for unearthing new musical sounds led him to start collecting records, purchase a pair of Technics 1210 mk2 decks and begin mixing. He has never looked back and he is now certifiably a true vinyl junkie. As well as hosting monthly online radio shows on The Underground Sessions and holding down residencies at Nest in Leeds, Studio 89 in Cardiff and Etc in Manchester, Rikki has also supported some of the finest underground DJs around, including the likes of Mike Huckaby, Italojohnson, Jeremy 'Underground Paris', Jay Daniel, Bicep, Maurice Fulton and Hunee. Rikki is also a very hard-working podcaster, dishing out tantalizing selections of wax to a wide range of respected labels including Feel My Bicep, Banoffee Pies, Roots For Bloom, City Fly and many more. Armed with a well-rounded musical exposure, saving to afford production equipment has become a priority for Rikki in recent months in order to capture the sounds and styles of records he has fallen in love with over the years. His aim is: "To create instinctive dance floor jams with a distinct electronic edge, which make your neck snap and your body jack... or to take you off the dancefloor altogether to somewhere completely different". He already has some very high quality tracks released on Hull's Freche Früchte Recordings, Dublin-based label Swink Music and also Danish label Two House Limited. With up-coming releases on a few different UK labels as well as a string of remixes in the pipeline, Rikki is certainly one to keep an eye out for! @slickyrik ===== No tracklist was provided for this mix, but do feel free to ask for track ID's in the comments.

Moodymann — Sloppy Cosmic 02. Alex Israel — A Man of Qualities 03. O B Ignitt — Celestial Salacious 04. Omar S — Thank U 4 letting me be myself 05. Big Strick — Code 1 06. Kyle Hall — Spoof 07. Marcellus Pittman — Sneak Attack 08. Jay Daniel — Brainz 09. Luke Hess — Pashko Version I 10.
