The playlist features Idris Ackamoor; Maria Pia de Vito; Todd Sickafoose; John Zorn; Henri Texier; Billy Mohler; Thandi Ntuli, Carlos Niño; Kris Davis; Sofia Rei, Jorge Roeder; Pierrick Pédron, and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Astrofever Radio is a monthly Radio Show annexed to Astrofever Records, an independent record label from Casablanca, Morocco. The sound of Astrofever Radio stems from a broad musical palette, maintaining a wide spectrum and focusing on good music regardless of genres. Curated by Casablanca-born and based Producer, DJ, and label head Mouhcine Zouitina better known as @Polyswitch. Presenting emerging and established artists from Morocco and beyond via @Worldwide-fm. Operating out of Casablanca, Morocco, Astrofever Records is an artist-led Record label aiming to hone the city's sound and serve as a forward-thinking imprint for like-minded artists. ___ *SPECIAL EPISODE // SPECIAL EPISODE // SPECIAL EPISODE* From his humble beginnings in 2011, North African, Casablanca-born and based producer has been continuously shaping his sound signature in the sphere of electronic music, resulting in a cross-genres blend appealing to both DJs and music fans from all across the spectrum. After a small run of exalted singles and EPs, Polyswitch gravitates towards the full-length format with “PRAISE THE SUN“ a 13-track sonic testimonial showcasing his distinct sense of substantially blending a vibrant profusion of musical currents. Emanating from an expression of delight and adoration, “PRAISE THE SUN" can be used as a universal answer to questions like ‘What to do?' when there are no other solutions left. Reflecting the times, recorded during periods of duress and uncertainty, “PTS“ is a body of work conveying feelings of harmony, hope, love, and unity throughout 13 sublime musical works harkening back to the Jazz-funk fusion days with flavours of house, soul, hip-hop, and electronica mixed in. “PRAISE THE SUN" could very well be seen as a message of hope to a generation coming of age in a time of decay, collapse, institutional corruption, and societal change. Scheduled for release this month, Polyswitch shares a batch of his recent finds and go-to's that accompanied him navigating the process. ___ *00:00:00 – 02:00:00 / Polyswitch 1– Ahmad Jamal - Arabesque (Atlantic Jazz) 2– King Khan - Follow The Mantis (Ernest Jenning Record Co.) 3– Niko Tzoukmanis - Twinkle (Libreville Records) 4– Steve Bach - Rain Dance (Soundwings) 5– Cochemea - Al-Mu'tasim (Daptone) 6– Polyswitch - In Good Spirits (feat.
Sun Ra claimed to be an extraterrestrial being from Saturn who could teleport you to other planets with his music. That may or may not have been true, but he certainly was the leader of one of the most influential jazz ensembles of the 20th century, and he’s often called the father of Afrofuturism. I talk with artist Cauleen Smith and writer John Corbett about Sun Ra’s creative journey, and why he was light years ahead of his time. The musician Idris Ackamoor explains why Sun Ra was an inspiration for his band The Pyramids. And Ytasha Womack, author of fiction and non-fiction books about Afrofuturism, discusses why imagining the future is still a radical act. Today's episode is brought to you by BetterHelp. Finalmente Episodio 20. Sì, abbiamo smosso i nostri culoni pesanti. Two artists, from different decades and veterans in their own right, presented to a new generation that's taking on bold new territories. Mark De Clive-Lowe's musical calling began when he discovered his father's jazz records around the dawn of acid house. From earnestly composing electronic music in his native New Zealand, to making a name for himself in the clubs of London and around the world, De Clive-Lowe has racked up points working with the likes of 4-Hero, Shirley Horn, and Lauren Hill. From Broken Beat to Blue Note, he's always delivered an inspired collaboration. His recent output has both worlds merging, producing something new and sonically exciting with CHURCH, Live at the Blue Whale and Heritage. Idris Ackamoor is the type of sonic treat that one really looks forward to and savors, knowing that it's the sort of pleasure that doesn't come around very often. Over the decades Ackamoor, with or without his band the Pyramids, has selectively released a series of wonderfully crafted gems steeped in soul, psychedelia, dub, and Afrobeat that are always heavy on spirituality and social awareness. His latest, An Angel Fell, may be his greatest–its freshness and originality make him a contender in the canon of jazz notables.
Dropping some Best of 2018 selections including music from Idris Ackamoor, Te’Amir, The Flying Stars Of Brookyln, Duval Timothy and Joe Armon Jones. Plus a Christmas themed DJ Mix including Hip Hop, Soul, Reggae and Jazz from DJ Spinna, Children Of Zeus, Wiley, James Brown, Blondie, Stevie Wonder, Cocoa Tea and Nancy Wilson.

This week we feature an exclusive interview with, and two hours of music by the bay area saxophonist Idris Ackamoor. An iconoclast like Thelonious Monk once famously said "You play what you want and let the public pick up on what you're doing. Even if it does take them 15 or 20 years". In the case of Idris Ackamoor, that took more like 35 years. But the amount of attention that his music has garnered in the past decade is a well deserved pay-back to a musician that has cultivated his own vision pursuing -- for five decades -- a personal path, fueled by a fascination for his African roots, a profound respect for Duke Ellington, Cecil Taylor and Sun Ra, as well as an admiration for the capacity of musicians like Fela Kuti and Bob Marley to balance the spiritual and the artistic with the social and political dimensions of music. All of that infused with a contagious theatrical ability that makes his performances memorable. Detailed playlist available at https://spinitron.com/radio/index.php?station=rfb&playlist=7830#here
This week we pay homage to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, looking into her early jazz forays and her influence on many jazz musicians. In Part 2 of our interview with single dad, bassist, and educator Andre St. James, Andre talks relationships, musically and romantically. His hard choices. His brave ones. Get the tissues. We mean it this time."She's pregnant... Oh, man, does this mean I have to get a regular job? Working for Maytag or something?" View fullsize Andre and his son, Dreydan "Oregon saved my life... before that I had no concept of what a relationship was. It was always that the music was first...having a child was not in my reality, I was going all around the world playing."Check out and buy Andre's latest project with the Thollem/DuRoche/StJames Trio."I was on Intercity.... I've done so many recordings I can't keep track. I remember the record labels that I was on.... Idris Ackamoor, the alto player from The Pyramids, was in town and we were all hugging and kissing, it was all beautiful...and, then, he says, 'you were on that one record, that compilation, I'll get you a copy of it.' And, I was like what?"
Welcome to the April edition of the Aquarium Drunkard podcast, coming in from West of the Rockies. On this program, we explore the late night radio theater of the late Art Bell. The Coast to Coast AM host passed away on Friday, April 13th, and we’ve spent the days since exploring his classic archives. Aquarium Drunkard founder Justin Gage and co-host Jason P. Woodbury sat down to reflect on Bell’s singular voice, dedication to chronicling the unknown, and status as a purveyor of genuine American weirdness. Also on the show, guitarist Nels Cline joins us to discuss his new quartet, the Nels Cline 4, and “Imperfect 10” from the combo’s new Blue Note Records LP, Currents, Constellations. Maybe you know his playing with Wilco, but here he focuses on the notion of “jazz fusion,” which he’s been exploring since the late ‘80s. And we begin the podcast with a discussion with Jaime Fennelly of Mind Over Mirrors. The synthesist and composer just released a masterpiece called Bellowing Sun. It’s cosmic in scope but rooted in the earthy reflections of naturalist writers like Henry Beston, whose 1928 book, The Outermost House: A Year of Life on the Great Beach of Cape Cod, served as a guidepost for the new album. Earlier this month, the album debuted alongside a multi-media installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago featuring a light sculpture modeled after an enormous drum. The suggestions — of biorhythms and universal patterns — are in keeping with Mind Over Mirrors’ space-folk. Though Mind Over Mirrors began as a solo project, it’s very much a group effort now, featuring Janet Bean of Freakwater and Eleventh Dream Day, Jon Mueller of Volcano Choir, and Jim Becker of Califone. The band’s latest, Bellowing Sun, arrives in conjunction with a multi-media installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago featuring an ambitious light sculpture. One of the marvelous things about Mind Over Mirrors is the way the group’s music feels both spacey and earthy. On the new album, which is at turns ecstatic, spooky, and revelatory, Fennelly and company the band maximize that ability, putting the idea of our planet as a cosmic vehicle into context. “I think about [the cosmos] in relation to my own music as being otherworldly, but I also think of it as being grounded, in the way that the Earth is cosmic,” Fennelly says. “It’s not just about the area beyond us or outside of us, in kind of an exploratory sense as well.” On his new album with the Nels Cline 4, Currents, Constellations, guitarist and composer Nels Cline reigns in the conceptual mood music of his previous Blue Note Records release, Lovers, in favor of tight, spiky interplay with guitarist Julian Lage, bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Tom Rainey. It’s a record fueled by Cline’s energy, incorporating avant-garde, rock, and blues influences. It is, for lack of a better term, jazz fusion music, which explains why Cline’s initial title for “Imperfect 10” was “Jazz Fusion Composition.” “I definitely chose that term to bother people, particularly people who think they’re cooler than ‘jazz fusion,'” Cline says. “Basically, it’s a meaningless term. It’s a combination of basically whatever. It doesn’t have to mean a combination of jazz and rock and classical and funk…it doesn’t mean the same thing from one person to another, and that’s why it’s a fun word to use. It’s basically a meaningless word that bothers people, which I find linguistically fascinating, but it also, stylistically, does kind of define me.” If you’ve ever been the sort of person content to sit around the radio late at night or scan the airwaves on a long drive through the middle of nowhere, there’s a good chance you’ve experienced the strange radio theater of Art Bell’s Coast to Coast AM. Since Bell passed away earlier this month and since his passing, we’ve been tuned into his archives. Here, we reflect on the impact and legacy of Bell’s pioneering program. “Coast to Coast AM felt like this secret handshake between people,” AD’s Justin Gage says. “Not unlike when you find a record or something that means a lot to you, that might be a little esoteric or obscure. Coast to Coast AM definitely kind of felt like that in the late ’90s, early 2000s.” Thanks for listening to the Transmissions podcast. Welcome to the fourth episode of Aquarium Drunkard’s Transmissions podcast, our recurring series of in-depth conversations and unexpected sounds.. On this week’s episode, we’re splitting our time with two unique artists. Up first is Idris Ackamoor, leader of the intergalactic combo the Pyramids, whose new album We Be All Africans is a potent mix of soul, funk, world music, and spiritual jazz. Next, we hop in the van with singer/songwriter Eleanor Friedberger. As one-half of Fiery Furnaces, she created some of the most challenging and complex music of the 2000s, but on her latest album New View, she continues to ease into the confident, ’70s-inspired melodicism that has defined her solo albums, inspired in part by her move to upstate New York.
