When a group of Mormon women had their LGBTQ children come out to them, they realized that their culture and religion had not prepared them to be supportive. So they formed an organization to help educate and empower other Idaho parents, despite the state's hostile politics. Jen Blair is part of the Mama Dragons group, and is joining host Lindsay Van Allen to share how they're supporting families in the Treasure Valley. Mama Dragons will have a booth at Boise Pride this weekend. Click here for more info on the event. Want some more Boise news? In this podcast episode, hosts Deborah Linder and Liz Rivera discuss the challenges and support systems for families with LGBTQ children, particularly focusing on the organization Mama Dragons. The episode begins with a brief introduction and proceeds to explore how Mama Dragons evolved from a small group of mothers to a significant support network. Special guest Jen Blair, host of the Mama Dragons podcast 'In the Den,' shares insights about reassuring parents when their child comes out and the importance of creating an inclusive and supportive environment at home. Jen emphasizes the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ youth in foster care, noting that they are overrepresented in the system and often face higher risks of self-harm and mental health issues. The discussion highlights the crucial role of mothers in protecting and advocating for their LGBTQ children, especially in conservative or religious communities where acceptance might be more challenging. Throughout the episode, various strategies for fostering a supportive environment are discussed, including the importance of educating parents, building a community of allies, and promoting positive dialogues about LGBTQ role models. Jen also underscores the significance of religious and community support, and how organizations like Mama Dragons and the Family Acceptance Project help families navigate these complexities. The conversation covers the benefits of proactive parenting and the necessity of providing LGBTQ youth with mentors and role models. Finally, the episode touches on the importance of Pride Month as a celebration of LGBTQ identity and the value of pride events for visibility and acceptance. The hosts encourage anyone, regardless of their current understanding, to seek education and join the support networks available. The episode concludes with a call for more foster parents, especially those who can provide supportive homes for LGBTQ youth. Full Transcript Want to learn more about becoming a Foster Parent?
Advanced Cicerone® Scott Fielder whips Certified Cicerones into shape to crush the Advanced exam as the teacher of the Beer Scholar Advanced Cicerone® Coaching Program. As of this interview, the AC Coaching Program is producing its first crop of new ACs from our initial cohort! Scott is also a Packaging Operator at The Bruery in Placentia, CA. On top of all that, he's a Certified BJCP beer judge, has completed the Aroxa Sensory Training Program taught by Dr. Bill Simpson, and with AC Chris Crowe he is one of the two Beer Enthusiasts on their fantastic YouTube channel. Scott is also currently preparing to take the insanely difficult Master Cicerone® exam later this year! It was either Jen Blair or Rachael Hudson who said, on their excellent False Bottomed Girls podcast, that preparing for the Master Cicerone exam is not simply a goal, it's a lifestyle. Scott is living the beer education lifestyle! Scott embodies a welcoming anti-gatekeeping passion for beer education like few others I've encountered in my decade of teaching beer. Besides that, he's my friend and business partner. Not long after he crushed the AC we began trying to figure out how to do a Beer Scholar program for the AC exam and came up with the AC Coaching Program. I've witnessed Scott's intense personal focus on leveling up to the Master level – he brings that same high level of dedication, focus, and care to preparing our Beer Scholar students for the AC exam. The “Meet a Cicerone” podcast is all about sitting down with folks who are “all in on beer.” I don't know many people who fit the bill more than AC Scott Fielder. P.S. If you're interested in joining the Beer Scholar Advanced Cicerone® Coaching Program, reach out to me or Scott right away so we can start getting you ready to join the next cohort! Thanks so much for listening! –Chris
In my time in and around the beer industry, I've heard too many people underestimate the Cicerone Certification Program, a worldwide standard for recognizing people who are experts in beer sales and service. While I haven't taken it myself, I understand the rigorous studying that's required to pass the written and tasting exam to become a Certified Cicerone, just the second level of a four-part process to become a Master Cicerone. And even those who take the test seriously aren't guaranteed to pass it the first time. But don't take my word for it, let's hear from an expert. In this episode, Jen Blair, who recently became a Master Cicerone—the highest level of certification and a title just 28 people in the world hold today—shares details from her almost decade-long journey to reach this pinnacle. If you're interested in becoming a Cicerone, this episode is for you. But even if you're not planning to take these tests, you'll learn so much about what it means to explore beer, its history, and all the sensory experiences it can provide. There's a personal side to it all, too, and you'll hear from Jen about the importance of learning from your mistakes, honoring deadlines, and creating realistic schedules. As a straight-A student, Jen thought she knew how to study for the Cicerone tests, but realized that to pass even the first level exam she had to go beyond memorization and fully master the material. Throughout the episode, Jen shares some of the shifts in mindset she had to make to cross the Master Cicerone finish line, including relearning how to learn and strengthening her weak areas instead of ignoring them, like memorizing commercial styles despite disagreeing with the requirement. Listen in until the end to hear about the inspiration behind her newsletter, get tips on palate training and health, as well as what Jen is focused on now that she's completed her Cicerone journey.
In the Den is one year old! To celebrate a full year of episodes, we're turning the spotlight back onto our intrepid host Jen Blair. Mama Dragons Executive Director Celeste Carolin guest hosts and asks Jen about her experiences of having a child come out as gay and finding Mama Dragons in its earliest years of existence. We hope you enjoy this chance to get to know Jen better and to glimpse the source of her endless passion for creating a better world for parents of LGBTQ children. Special Guest: Jen BlairJen has been a member of Mama Dragons since January 2014. She has a husband, four amazing kids, and one pet--a plastic skeleton dog that sits on her porch during the month of October. Originally from Utah, Jen currently lives in Idaho. When not practicing yoga or reading, she's often having lively conversations with strangers on the internet. Special Guest Host: Celeste Carolin Celeste Carolin studied business at Harvard Extension School and is currently earning a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from NCU. As a queer (lesbian) cisgender woman, she has worked with LGBTQ youth and non-profits for the past 10 years. Celeste has served in Mama Dragons leadership since 2016 and currently serves as the Mama Dragons Executive Director. She lives just outside Seattle with her lovely partner Jamie, extended family, grand kiddos, and their pup Jackson Blue. Both Celeste and her partner come from non accepting religious roots, which fuels Celeste's passion for understanding and serving the intersectionality of faith and parenting LGBTQ children. Content Note: this episode contains descriptions of a child's coming out from the perspective of a parent, who is candid about her own homophobia. This story is shared with the consent of the (now adult) child, but some of the parent's early conceptions of the queer community are admittedly uneducated. In this episode, Elle shares an earnest conversation with Jen Blair, who shares her journey as the mother of a gay son. Jen's family spent decades in the LDS church, and by most standards were a typical Mormon family. When her son came out 10 years ago, she found herself at a complete loss for information, and with a singular mission: to love her son the same as she had been loving him before he came out. This week I speak with Chris Pisney and Jen Blair from the Cicerone Certification Program. Chris is Program Director for the program, and Jen is the Exam Manager…and Jen has just attained the highest accolade for Cicerones, becoming a Master Cicerone, joining a group of only 22 other individuals worldwide to achieve that title. Education has always been in short supply in the brewing industry, and as beer styles have changed and evolved dramatically over the course of the last two decades, making beer service and consumer advice relevant to the highly diverse market has never been harder. In this conversation, I discuss with Jen and Chris how to make beer relevant to the market, improve service and ask what breweries and venues need to do to be better. You can find out more at Cicerone.org, there's also an Australian Certified Cicerone group on Facebook that you should consider joining for support in your Cicerone journey. Over the past few months on Beer Me! we have explored different parts of the Homebrewing world, including competitions. One aspect of competitions we haven't had the opportunity to discuss is beer judging. Thankfully, Jen Blair joins the show this week to dive into that. Jen Blair is an Advance Cicerone, National BJCP Judge, and co-host of the beer and brewing podcast "False-Bottomed Girls". Last week, she led a virtual breakout session for Crafted for Action, "Turning the Beer Judging Tables: Strategies for an Inclusive Judging Environment" (Watch the sessions: HERE) On the show, we discuss what that beer judging typically looks like and some of the barriers that exist. Jen takes us through suggestions on how to make the beer judging process more inclusive both from a planning perspective and in the moment. She also has built an extensive resource for those looking to pursue beer judging. Beer judging can be an incredibly fun, engaging experience. It is endlessly beneficial for palette and brewing development. But it can be intimidating. Hopefully today you are inspired to dive into the world of beer judging. Happy Brewsday Tuesday!!! Today I have the famous J Jackson-Beckham (Dr. J) joining us today to discuss Crafted for All (craftedforall.com) and her mission to empower craft beverage organizations to develop inclusive, equitable, and just practices that drive success, build communities, and inspire individuals. This is a wonderful talk about how create more opportunities in the craft beer industry for diversity and inclusion, how things have changed in the past year for the beer industry and where she hopes the beer industry goes in the future. Also in this episode we have a BONUS interview/ update with Jen Blair! We talk about her new gig and the new beer that comes out TODAY to support women in the beer industry. Special thanks to Sweet Crude for our title song!
Sexism has always been the Craft Beer industry but why are we talking about it now? It all started with a simple question posted on Instagram by a female brewer in Massachusetts, "What Sexist Comments Have You Experience?" A match was lit and a firestorm of stories from all over the nation poured in to the inbox of @ratmagnet. She shared each of them and the curtain has been pulled back on sexism in this industry and breweries are scrambling to come to terms with this harsh reality that women are all too familiar with. I start with speaking to Beth Demmon (@delightedbite) a food and beer journalist and advocate for women's rights where we discuss her most recent article on this topic-Link to Article- https://vinepair.com/articles/sexism-assault-beer-industry-ratmagnet/ Next we speak with owner and brewmaster from Orpheus Brewing on his take as a male ally and what he does in his establishment to ensure the safety of women in the brewery and why all breweries should be speaking out against sexism in this industry. Next up is Jen Blair, (@underthejenfluence) she is a very prominent figure in the industry and an advocate for women in the beer industry everywhere. We discuss her very public resignation letter from a well-known brewery in Atlanta, how she took a stand and how employees and consumers can do the same. Link to Jen's Beer Judge Training is here- https://underthejenfluence.beer/beer-judge-training. Finally we speak with good friend of the podcast and Executive director of the Georgia Craft Brewers Guild, Joseph Cortez. We discuss his reaction to these accusations, what the guild is doing to address these issues, ways to get more women involved in the guild and what he hopes will happen moving forward to make sure sexism in the craft beer industry is not tolerated moving forward. Thank you all for listening! If you have questions about this or any episode please email me at caroline@bitchbeerpodcast.com

Episode 267 - Jen Blair, New Realm Brewing (COVID-19 Quarantine Edition) Happy Monday, Thieves! This week we're trying out some new audio options and recording the show from Zoom. We think it sounds a little bit better but let us know what you think. We're also bringing back the concept of the black glass. Executive Producer Justin Kennedy picked up some beers locally and sent to John and Augie. They were wrapped in foil (and even a bottle cap was covered) and the guy's spouses poured into black glasses. It brought some fun back to the show. And Justin was got an assist from the beer selection from today's guest: Jen Blair of New Realm Brewing Co. She sums up what's she's doing and where she has been: "Currently, I’m training approximately 30 New Realm employees to take their Level 2 Cicerone exam in April at both our Atlanta and Virginia Beach locations, while studying for my Master Cicerone exam as well as the next level of my BJCP certification. I also co-host a podcast called False Bottomed Girls that’s focused on beer education for all, but women in particular. My newest project is a plant-based food and beer pairing series with my friend and fellow Advanced Cicerone and beer educator, Asa Stone. Our goal is to provide beer lovers who follow plant-based diets with their own version of The Brewmasters Table. I started both projects because I saw a lack of women educators in both the podcasting and beer pairing areas.Prior to joining New Realm, I was the Executive Director for the North American Craft Maltsters Guild, which is an international trade organization dedicated to promoting craft malt and providing resources and education for small-scale craft maltsters. I not only provided members with education and support but also traveled throughout the US and internationally to present about craft malt and malt sensory. Beer is an agricultural product and I continue to advocate support for local farmers and businesses throughout the beer supply chain."We had a lot of fun talking with her about recipes, brewery growth, and education. The following is, one again, not a normal podcast. It's a simple conversation between four friends about a truly heinous situation that has continued to unfold around us in ever expanding circles. In the week before Fantastic Fest, we sat down to directly address the situation that had developed with Tim League, Devin Faraci, and Fantastic Fest. We were joined by two good friends and members of the film community and we discussed our feelings, our hopes and our fears for the festival we were all about to attend. Well that festival is over and we thought we'd record a part two of that conversation, especially considering the additional allegations coming to light in other related spheres. This has, after all, hardly been an isolated incident. So that's exactly what we did. We recorded another podcast. It's not our final word on the matter, but for now it is the last time we'll devote an entire podcast to this particular topic. (Knock on wood.) We've said it before and we'll say it again, these are not isolated incidents, but it is an important time for our community to consider how its culture has treated women in general and specifically when they speak up about harassment and assault. When this podcast ends, the conversation won't. And it can't. Huge thanks to Jen Blair (@fakejenblair) and Rafael Ruiz (@RafAntonioRuiz) for joining us today and thanks for listening.
The following is not a normal podcast. There's no discussion of movies, television or games, there's no pithy clips pulled to highlight our points. It's a simple conversation between four friends about a truly heinous situation that we've found ourselves having to deal with this week and as such it is a bit disorganized and emotionally raw. This podcast was recorded to directly address the current situation and controversy surrounding the Alamo Drafthouse, Tim League, Devin Faraci and Fantastic Fest. We feel that this is one of the most important tests facing our film geek community right now and we would be remiss if we didn't address it as critics, as fans and as feminists. But we understand that it's not what we normally talk about and as such you may feel like you want to skip it. We hope you don't. This is an important and ongoing conversation about our culture and the way its evolved and while this is by no means a final statement, it is a starting point for us, if not all of you, going into Fantastic Fest. While we do not talk about the specifics of the allegations leveled at Devin we understand that this entire conversation regarding the fallout and League's response to his critics may be triggering for some so please take care of yourself. Huge thanks to Jen Blair (@fakejenblair) and Rafael Ruiz (@RafAntonioRuiz) for joining us today and thanks for listening.
Jen Blair and Bethany Burr join us to talk about what is new this year for Oktoberfest.
