EUGEE emerges as a remarkable talent from the vibrant streets of New Orleans, a city that pulses with music and culture. Beyond the spotlight, she dedicates her days to the noble pursuit of healing as a full-time medical doctor, bravely standing at the forefront of the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a calling that momentarily eclipsed her musical aspirations, as she poured her heart into serving her community. Now, EUGEE stands poised to unveil her creative brilliance to the world. Her journey began against a backdrop of trials and triumphs. As a Nigerian-American woman with a plus-sized frame, EUGEE faced early challenges, enduring taunts about her appearance and eloquence. In her household, education reigned supreme, often taking precedence over social pursuits. It was in the solitude of her room, amidst the pages of textbooks and the cadence of her own thoughts, that she discovered the transformative power of music.EUGEE's dreams were set ablaze by the melodies that flowed from the radio, igniting a vision of self-expression through music. The echoes of ‘90s and early 2000s pop culture reverberated within her, setting her on a resolute path towards pop stardom. Wrestling with her own vocal doubts, she turned to the art of penning poetry, using lyrics as her canvas to paint her emotions, until she unearthed her soul-stirring, distinctive sound.Hailing from a lineage steeped in musical heritage, this New Orleans native took her first steps onto the stage at the tender age of 16, forming a band with classmates, including the talented Sam Craft (of Sweet Crude). Together, they forged a sonic tapestry rooted in "Rock n' Soul," enchanting audiences in packed venues. The unforgiving force of Hurricane Katrina rerouted their journey, compelling them to seek new horizons.Chicago beckoned, and EUGEE answered its call, enrolling at Loyola University Chicago for her undergraduate studies. Here, the city's pulsating rhythm wove its way into her heart. Jazz clubs became her sanctuary, where she lent her voice to the night. Under the spell of Chicago's house music scene, she reemerged as "EUGEE," melding dance and pop into a genre uniquely her own. Collaborating with a kindred spirit, Simoneaux, her music found new life, their eclectic beats entwining seamlessly with EUGEE's enchanting voice.Yet, as steadfast as her resolve, she heeded her mother's wishes and embarked on the rigorous path of medical school. The cadence of her dreams momentarily hushed. In 2015, she emerged triumphantly, clutching her Doctor of Medicine degree, and in 2018, she completed her residency in Internal Medicine. Amidst the crucible of medical education and residency, the music became her sanctuary once again, a beacon of solace and strength, protecting her from the abyss of burnout. Now, with a heart that beats both for medicine and music, EUGEE stands poised at the intersection of two worlds, poised to inspire with her healing touch and captivate with her soulful melodies. Her journey, a testament to the boundless depths of human potential, serves as a beacon of hope and a reminder that our true calling can span across multiple realms. Hosted on Acast. Amy outlines the real cost of fossil fuels, plus how oil companies still manage to appear “eco-friendly” while they actively exacerbate the climate crisis. On paper, the small South American country of Guyana is the fastest-growing economy in the world, thanks to its oil boom. The country started shipping barrels of oil in 2019. Hotels are popping up all over its capital city. Historic homes are being turned into condos for visiting oil execs. But average citizens say they aren't benefiting from the boom like they thought they would. And one lawyer is trying everything she can to stop her homeland from being changed from a carbon sink into a carbon bomb. Acadiana is famous for the wildcatter mentality. It's a frame of mind inherited from the early days of the region's oil industry, when lone prospectors went drilling until they struck black gold.  You can see the attitude just about everywhere. Lafayette has a really high level of entrepreneurship. Around 11% of the workforce is made up of business owners, a ratio competitive with innovation meccas like Austin, Texas.  So it's not so much about what we're making, but how we make it. It's the spirit of the region.  David Meaux is working to make rum the spirit of the region as founder and master distiller of Wildcat Brothers. Wildcat is the second rum distillery in Louisiana and the first in Acadiana. It sources its flagship brand of small batch rums from local sugar cane.  The goal is to make sipping rum, something you can enjoy neat, up, or on the rocks. David is a lawyer by training and founded Wildcat in 2011. Today you can find bottles of their flagship Sweet Crude rum in 40 states.  Acadiana wouldn't have much spirit without music. And in the wildcatter mentality, Dustin Gaspard has made a go of breaking into the region's music scene as a singer-songwriter, an unusual track for a culture best known for dance music.  Dustin grew up in Cow Island but went all-in on his dream with a move to Lafayette. No car, no job, no place to sleep.  In 2016 Dustin suffered severe damage to his vocal chords, forcing him to change how he used his voice and inspiring him to hone his craft.  Dustin has released several singles and put out the record Hoping Heaven Got a Kitchen in 2022.  On this edition of Out to Lunch Acadiana, Jan Swift sits in for Christiaan Mader who's off on an assignment for the New York Times and NPR.  Out to Lunch Acadiana is recorded live over lunch at Tula Tacos and Amigos in downtown Lafayette. You can see photos from this show by Astor Morgan at itsacadiana.com. It's New Orleans: Out to Lunch

All of us are looking for happiness. Some of us believe we'll achieve it when we get something - like a new job. Partly, it's human nature to think like this. It gives us hope. But it's also a kind of jealousy. To some extent we all want what we haven't got. For example, have you ever noticed when you meet someone new and find out what they do, you find yourself thinking their job seems way more exciting than whatever you do? And probably pays more too. Universally, the very pinnacle of this job-envy, is showbiz. The music business and the film business appear to be far more glamorous than anything else any of us do for a living. Sure, not everybody can be a rock star or a movie star, but it seems - from the outside at least - that going to work making movies, records, or concerts has got to be a great way to make a living. On this edition of Out to Lunch we get a chance to find out what it's really like in the enviable and glamorous world of movies and music. Both of Peter's guests are people who are instrumental in creating the local film and music business. Music Tavia Osbey might not be a familiar name to you. But the musical artists she manages are. Tavia guides the careers of Tank and the Bangas, Big Freedia, Sweet Crude, Naughty Professor, and others. Tavia is co-founder and owner of the local music management company, Mid Citizen Entertainment.   Movie Jason Waggenspack is probably another name you don't recognize, unless you stick around for the final credits of movies like Terminator Genisys, The True Don Quixote, Bill & Ted Face The Music, When The Bough Breaks, and many more over the past 13 years or so. Jason's job title is one of the greatest examples you can find of job-envy. He's CEO & Head of Possibilities at The Ranch Film Studios. The Ranch is the 2nd biggest film studio in Louisiana, on a 22-acre complex that started out life in a less glamorous role, as a Lowes, in Chalmette. Making music and making movies have their own challenges. Life in the trenches of the film business and the music industry is no picnic. But there are people like Tavia and Jason who seem to be born to work in these businesses, who thrive in the unique highs and lows of these industries, and who wouldn't be happy doing anything else. Photos from this show by Jill Lafleur are at our website. Here's more lunchtime conversation about New Orleans film business.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week we’re joined by Drew and Mac Anderson, brothers and co-founders of Cleveland Kitchen, a fast-growing brand of fresh, fermented foods.  Founded in 2013, the company’s flagship line of sauerkraut has risen to become the top-selling premium product in the category in the U.S., according to the company, and is available at over 9,000 retail stores including those of Target, Wegmans, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Kroger and Publix. Amid growing consumer demand for probiotic-rich foods, the Andersons, along with their co-founder and brother-in-law Luke Visnic, are aiming to build Cleveland Kitchen into “a household name with a healthy halo, ”including moving into other products such as its recently launched marinades and dressings.   Within our conversation, the Andersons spoke about the roles that their mother and the city of Cleveland had in the brand’s inspiration, their experience leaning into new use occasions for sauerkraut and why it was key to growth, how data led to more impactful merchandising and bigger sales and how the brothers balance family and business. Show notes:  0:36: None Of Us Are Doing Dry January, But We Do Love These Products. And Probiotics. -- The episode’s hosts chatted about notable names and nicknames,  riffed on a “bitchin’” brand and discussed the recent boom in new non-alcoholic spirits and ready-to-drink cocktails and a few products within the growing cohort. They also spoke about the revamped, yet still remarkable, GT’s Cocoyo and a few other food and beverage brands sampled over the past month. 18:34: Interview: Drew & Mac Anderson, Co-Founders, Cleveland Kitchen -- Taste Radio editor Ray Latif sat down with with the Andersons, who shared their enthusiasm for the NFL’s Cleveland Browns and the team’s recent playoff run, spoke about what they learned from working at farmers’ markets at a young age and how they incorporated fermentation into their college experiences. They also explained how they communicated Cleveland Kitchen’s sauerkraut as a functional, culinary food that is cross-cultural, and versatile, making the leap from natural to conventional retailers and why owning and operating a production facility is a significant asset and advantage over competitors. Later, they discussed considerations for new product development and how they settle disagreements and stay focused on the company’s mission.  Brands in this episode: Cleveland Kitchen, Bitchin’ Sauce, Athletic Brewing, HOP WTR, Seedlip, Wilderton, Budweiser, Schlitz, Golden Road, Guinness, Everleaf, Three Spirit, bonbuz, Spirity Cocktails, Kin Euphorics, Cedar’s, Cann, Proposition Cocktail, Sweet Crude, Sweet Reason, Local Roots Kombucha, GT’s Living Foods, Coconut Cult, Jetson Probiotics, Betera

To help us learn about the Francophonie and Louisiana's role in it, I'm joined by Scott Tilton and Rudy Bazenet. Rock'N Vino: A Pairing of Music & Wine

The Rock'N Vino podcast sits down with BottleRock Co-Founder and Partner of BottleRock Presents Dave Graham about this year's line-up. Find out about what's new, what's happening, and what to expect from the year's festival as long as a breakdown from Coco and Mike on this year's line-up. NAPA — BottleRock Napa Valley producers today unveiled the lineup for the seventh incarnation of their annual wine country festival, held at the Napa Valley Expo between May 24 and 26—Memorial Day weekend. This year's lineup features a new twist with the festival featuring dual headlining sets each night. Friday includes alt-rockers Imagine Dragons and rapper Logic. Saturday has Neil Young and Promise of the Real, along with R&B superstar Pharrell Williams. Rootsy rock band Mumford & Sons and guitar virtuoso Santana will close out the festival on Sunday, May 26. The lineup again features more than 80 artists over the three days. "We've expanded the capability of the second stage," BottleRock CEO Dave Graham said. "We wanted to be able to attract some major acts to play the second stage at the same time the main stage was playing, and that's exactly what we did this year." The bill is rounded out by a slate of eclectic artists, including Sylvan Esso, OneRepublic, Flogging Molly, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Cypress Hill, Tash Sultana, Lord Huron, Big Boi, Bishop Briggs, Jeff Goldbum & The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra and others. Graham said the addition of Young is particularly meaningful this year. "Neil Young has not performed in the Bay Area, publicly, since the last Bridge School Benefit Concert back in 2016," he said. "What an honor for us to have a legend like him up on our stage." BottleRock will again feature it's culinary stage pairing celebrity chefs with musicians, actors and Bay Area luminaries cooking up unique dishes for festivalgoers, along with the festival's focus on the region's best food and wine. The culinary stage lineup will be announced in April. "This year, BottleRock is also a part of the prize offerings for [TV show] Top Chef, so the winner will get an appearance on the Culinary Stage this year," Graham said. Last year, more than 120,000 camp out to see performances by Bruno Mars, The Killers, Muse and others. Tickets go on sale Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the festival's website. Prices range from $359 for a three-day general admission pass up to $1,599 for a three-day Skydeck and VIP Viewing passes. Platinum Passes for BottleRock, which cost upwards of $4,000, are sold out. Raised as a “studio brat” it’s no wonder Maya Taylor became a highly sought after choreographer and dancer. But, it took years of practicing six hours a day, dance camps during the summer, and attending the prestigious Ailey School at Fordham before Maya was able to start living her dream of dancing professionally. Even with those stripes earned, Maya still paid more dues. For three years after graduating from Fordham, she danced and traveled with Elisa Monte Dance. When Maya’s mother became unexpectedly ill, Maya postponed her pursuit of a vaunted career as a dancer in New York and moved back to Omaha to help raise her younger sisters. The hardship of the move back to Omaha was silver lined with the opportunity to work as a choreographer, which was a career move Maya anticipated making much later in life. Ultimately, a chance meeting with the gentleman who later became Maya’s boyfriend turned her focus towards New Orleans. And, after two years of coaxing by the Crescent City, Maya made the move down south and built herself up as a premiere choreographer in the city. Just a few highlights from Maya's career include work on Solange’s Don’t Touch My Hair music video; features in the music videos of One Republic and Sweet Crude; and choreographing season one of the TNT drama Claws. You can see more of Maya's work on her website www.mayataylor.com; on Instagram @MayaAlexis; and Vimeo https://vimeo.com/mayataylor.

Welcome back faithful listeners! It's good to be back online. We took a brief hiatus re-tool the show a bit, and we are extremely excited to bring to you Season 2 of A Round with Steve and Cole! On this week's episode, we get a chance to chat with Skylar Stroup and Stephen MacDonald, two members of one of our favorite New Orleans bands: Sweet Crude. Composed exclusively of longtime Twelve Mile Limit regulars, Sweet Crude has found success bringing upbeat, culturally conscious music to the masses. Sweet Crude is dedicatied to the preservation of Cajun French through their lyrics, which are in both English and French. Skylar and Stephen are not only rockstars, but childhood friends from Mandeville who now work at the same company, iSeatz. Their employers are survivors of the bursting tech bubble of the late 90's and now a pillar in New Orleans tech industry, or "Silicon Bayou". This episode was recorded at a time when both Stephen and Skylar could not be on the road with their band due to work and personal responsibilities. Balancing passion and responsibility is something that I think all of us strive for, and it's great to get perspective on how to manage this from two highly talented individuals. Anywho, it's great to be back. Enjoy the conversation and the music and let us know what you think? Cheers! Steve

Somewhere along the line in the path of human progress we figured out fermentation. Eating fermented food might not have been all that useful in maintaining health and nutrition, but it sure felt good. And later, once we invented currency, people bought fermented goods in bottles and cans with romantic names that hinted at sophistication, like Budweiser, and Schlitz. Over the last decade, beer sophistication has become a reality. There s been an emergence of small, local artisanal breweries who make beer that does more than give you a buzz it actually tastes great. Here in Acadiana our contribution to the sum total of better tasting beer in the world is hyper local. Bayou Teche Brewing makes 9 different ales, specifically designed to complement the tastes of Cajun and Creole food. The President of Bayou Teche Brewing is Karlos Knott. After fermentation, humans came up with another way to make brain altering liquid distillation. That started out with stuff that was pretty nasty a kind of paint stripper version of gin that was so hard to swallow it was termed "medicinal" and thought to cure The Plague. Again, when we figured out we could enjoy the process of drinking and not just the effects, things started getting a little more sophisticated bringing us home to the Bayou where David Meaux owns Rank Wildcat Spirits. Rank Wildcat bottles Gold Medal winning rum under the labels, Sweet Crude and Black Gold. One of the things about alcohol consumption that s universal the world over is the social aspect that surrounds it. Most societies have created versions of the bar room, though not many of them as much fun as the many and varied establishments here in Acadiana. Nobody knows this better than Gus Rezende. Originally from Sao Paulo Brazil another place they know how to party Gus opened Dix Daiquiris in Lafayette, and before that, The Jefferson Street Pub. What could be better than a business lunch with a bunch of guys who make and sell booze Photos on this page at Social by Gwendolyn Aucoin.
