Do you feel like it is a struggle just to wrangle your toddlers (or teens!) for family meals? If so, Jennifer Zumbiel can relate.   Jennifer has a Bachelor's in Business Administration Marketing from the University of Kentucky and a Master's in Secondary Education from Xavier University. She is the creator and owner of  Togather Moments LLC, Togather™ conversation sticker games/tools, and the host of The Families That Stick Togather Podcast.   As a mother of four and a wife of 18 years, she understands how everyday distractions can impact face-to-face communication and threaten the strength of our relationships. She has found a way to help us all to gather with easy meaningful, and fun communication in real-life in the small moments we already have. The mission of Togather™ is to protect the strength of communication within families so that we can protect the strength of the Family the way God intended.  Jennifer has been in the trenches of just trying to get dinner made to now making sure her whole family can find a time to all eat together (amidst afterschool sports and activities). And although her challenges have changed, Jennifer opens up about how she made small yet intentional moments happen in the early years to set her and her family up for the teen years. With thought-provoking conversation starters your kids can literally peel and stick, Jennifer gives busy moms the ideas we need for becoming more intentional around the table. Plus, Jennifer shares some thoughts on how to incorporate rhythms and routines around the table, like saying grace. So for the mamas who have asked me, "How do we start praying together as a family before a meal," I know this episode hitting on Ash Wednesday is going to be particularly helpful to you.   Helpful Links: Visit Togather Moments Listen to The Families That Stick Togather Podcast Shop Togather Products Get Togather Freebies (perfect conversation starters for spring break coming up!) Many of my loyal followers have come up with a new verb. They say they are “Direction Not Perfectioning” something. Today’s podcast is an example of me living that verb. My goal for today was to introduce you to motivational speaker and author, RT Stokes. And yes, today you will listen to an interview with RT, it just won’t be with me. This is not what I envisioned but not only do you get to hear an awesome interview, it comes with a silver lining. I had a great interview with RT and I couldn’t wait to share it. He is a motivational speaker, a life mission coach, a former navy veteran and submariner who uses submarine principles to help individuals rise to the surface and overcome difficulties. Unfortunately, the audio for that interview was corrupted and to play it in such a poor quality would have been a disservice to Mr. Stokes. After many unsuccessful attempts to salvage the audio track, I had a brainstorm. My dear friend and fellow podcaster Jennifer Zumbiel had interviewed RT last fall for her “Families that Stick Togather” Podcast. That interview was what motivated me to interview RT in the first place. Jennifer graciously allowed me to share her talk with RT, so I get to introduce you to my friend’s awesome podcast and her engaging interview of RT.Jennifer’s mission with her podcast is to inspire and grow strong families through communication and faith! This interview fits both building strong families and Direction Not Perfection’s focus on being healthy and fit. RT explains the principles that keep a submarine running and performing its duties under the extreme pressure produced by deep water. He relates them to navigating through our lives and overcoming tremendous pressure to rise to be our best. Submarine lingo from the interview and his book The Relentless Rise and how it relates to health and fitness: “Aligning your purpose” - Goal setting“Adjusting your guidance” -Who are your influences? How are they affecting your direction or your health journey? “Activating your navigation” - Assuring that the efforts you are making are aligned with your ultimate goal“Assuming control of your mission” - The necessary movements, adjustments and corrections you need to make, to stay on track.R.T. Not only do I talk the talk, I walk the walk. Today’s podcast is a great example of how I practice what I preach, Direction Not perfection. In a perfect world it would be early in the week. I would be in my quiet, organized office, fine tuning an interview for you to listen to while my children were either in school or on a playdate. My dinner would be cooking in the crockpot getting ready to be served up in my spotless kitchen. But, none of us live in a perfect world. It is Thursday afternoon. You can hear kids laughing and playing in the background along with the sounds of dishes and laundry being done. I am doing this podcast hiding in a bedroom with my puppy in my lap. Well okay, the puppy is usually in my lap. I am on vacation, spending much needed time with my family. Still it was important to me not to miss a week with my podcast, so I am turning to some of my resources for today. I talk often about how important it is to plug positive messages into your head. To help give you an idea of where to find those, I am going to share with you three of my favorite podcasts and let them fill you with positivity while I join my family and create memories.Jennifer ZumbielFamilies That Stick Togather, Podcasthttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/families-that-stick-togather-trailer/id1518481703?i=1000477925917“This is REAL life by real families. Episode 73: Self-Care - Why Is It So Hard?

Direction Not Perfection

As women, we are proud to say that we take care of our husbands, our kids, our homes, our jobs, our churches and many other important things. But if we say we take care of ourselves we feel guilty and selfish. Today I not only give you permission to practice self-care, but I also encourage you to move it to the top of your priority list. You cannot pour from an empty cup, so you need to prioritize self-care to be able to care for others.Jennifer Zumbiel, of Togather Moments, interviewed me about self-care and how that fits into the Direction Not Perfection mentality. The fit is seamless. Getting proper nutrition and staying fit are a part of taking care of yourself. If you have barriers to self-care, they are also affecting your health. If guilt and fear of being selfish are keeping you from doing something for yourself, consider the question, “Is it helping or hindering my life?”, posed in Famous in Heaven and at Home by Michelle Meyers. If you can answer “helping” than it is important to make time for it in your day. You will know it is right if it “feels well with your soul”. The benefits you get from doing something for you, will ripple into the other parts of your life. You may not see results right away, but you will know it is worth fighting for. Guilt will go away if you can look back and see that the efforts you put into yourself have made you a better person. By taking care of yourself and making yourself the best you can be, you will have energy to pour onto others. That would give you the opportunity to be a great wife, a great mom, a great friend, a great career woman and/or a great daughter. But remember, you can’t be all of them in the same day. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. We are human, we need grace and love. By letting others know we aren’t perfect and could use their help, we give them a chance to fill their own cup by helping. Ask for help and enjoy the ripple. The word for the day is “permission”. Think about making it your “word of the year”. Give yourselfPermission to take care of yourself.Permission to ask for help.Permission to carve out time in the day for fitness or nutrition.Permission to be a role model for your kids so they understand self-care.Permission to not be perfect, or everything to everyone every day.Permission to slow down.Ask for help, go for a walk, listen to something fun or positive, give yourself 10 minutes each morning to organize your day and/or meditate. Take time for you. If guilt creeps in throw it back. Choose to do things throughout the day that ultimately “help not hinder” your life because you are fighting to be the best you that you can be.Resources:www.healthaccountabilitycoach.comwww.facebook.com/houselifestyles

Direction Not Perfection

To be healthy we need to have strong relationships with those close to us. Relationships affect our mental health and our mental health plays right into our physical health. We have to nurture both the physical and the mental aspects of life.Communication is a key part of the foundation that builds those strong relationships. Most of us have busy lives that have us multi-tasking, running errands and checking electronic devices for short snippets of info from work, friends or family. This lifestyle is not conducive to meaningful conversation. It is often counterproductive when we misinterpret what we think others are thinking, but don’t stop to clear the air. Having meaningful conversations with others is not easy for many people but there is help for those of you who don’t know where to start. You can outsource your communication. That doesn’t mean someone will do the talking for you but there are people who can give you words and conversation starters that will lead you past mundane everyday chit chat and help you to develop meaningful conversations with those close to you.Last year, in podcast 38, I interviewed Jennifer Zumbiel. She is the creator of Togather™ a dinner table game designed to help families make moments that matter. She is a strong advocate of family mealtimes. As you sit down together for a meal, you can ask the questions on the Togather™ stickers and delve deeper into subjects so your family can grow closerToday Jennifer and I sat down again to share some of her insight with you.Our pre-virus world was often chaotic due to different schedules and needs of a family.Finding the time to have family dinners during that chaos was even harder than knowing how to start conversations when we did find time. Many people are now isolated with their families and the obstacle of finding time is removed. It is the perfect time to reconnect with your spouse and your children and build habits, values and memories that will stay with them into adulthood.Communicating with depth and meaning may not be your strength. But that does not mean it is a weakness. To learn ways to ask questions that make connections and reveal character in your relationships, lean into other people’s strengths. It will make you stronger. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Use resources like Togather™ to get you started and give your family the ability to learn and grow.Resources:https://www.facebook.com/TogatherMoments/www.togathermoments.comhttps://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=TogatherMomentsInstagram: @togathermoments@houselifestyleswww.healthaccountabilitycoach.comwww.facebook.com/houselifestyles

Eating right and getting appropriate exercise are important components of a healthy lifestyle. There is also a large emotional component. We can strengthen our emotional health by being intentional in our actions, present with our family and friends and by delving deeply into the connections in our lives.Getting past the surface level of relationships with those we care about can create soul filling moments that positively affect our health and well-being. Today I interviewed Jennifer Zumbiel, creator of Togather™, a game you play with your family at the dinner table that helps to create those special moments. Family members are encouraged to think beyond simple yes or no answers and dig deeper for meaningful responses. It can be surprising and insightful to hear your little one’s answers.Jennifer describes the game best on her website:“Togather™ is a game in the form of a book. The game features seven categories, each with fifteen stickers. All 105 stickers were designed to create moments where you complement each other, where you share your good deeds, and where you can't stop laughing about things around your house.WHY STICKERS?The passing of a physical book and peeling of stickers achieves 100% involvement. It creates feelings of togetherness and individuality knowing each person chose a unique sticker. Take turns going around the table reading your sticker and answering the question.”The importance of gathering your family together around the dinner table is a hot topic on the internet. If you google “kitchen table and health” you will find these phrases:· Benefits of the Dinner Table Ritual - The New York Times· 7 Reasons to Eat Meals at the Table with Your Family· Eating meals at dining table is healthier, researchers claim· The Benefits of Eating Together for Children and Families· 9 Scientifically Proven Reasons to Eat Dinner as a Familyo Family dinners mean better family relationshipso Family meals lead to healthier food choiceso Eating as a family leads to better gradeso Family dinners are a chance to explore new foodso Family dinners lead to greater happinesso Homemade meals promote portion controlo Family dinners equal healthy kidso Family dinners relieve stresso Eating at home saves moneyResources:https://www.goodnet.org/articles/9-scientifically-proven-reasons-to-eat-dinner-as-familywww.togathermoments.comwww.facebook.com/togathermomentsInstagram: @togathermomentsGo to Jennifer’s website to learn more about Togather and download some sample questions to see how your family can benefit from this new game.Connect with me:www.healthaccountabilitycoach.comwww.facebook.com/houselifestyles
