Is your child either screaming, crying, calling for you, or climbing all over you any time you try to get food ready to put on the table? Does it feel intimidating to offer new foods because you don’t know how to handle your child’s response? Do you wrestle with what behaviors aren’t that big of a deal and which ones are creating bad habits when feeding your family? Do you feel like your fridge is always full and yet you only ever offer the same few foods … simply because clicking “reorder cart” is way easier than having to rethink what to buy and make each week? I so get this, mama. That’s why, on this podcast, you will find simple meal and snack ideas (that don’t require a lot of effort or ingredients), practical tips for meal planning and prep amidst mom life, and dietitian mom feeding advice that is both evidenced-based and yet grace-laced. My mission is to help normalize that feeding your family is a hard job. And yet, amidst your everyday efforts, I want to encourage you and equip you with the hacks and know-hows you need to find ease around your child’s eating habits. I know you may feel internally anxious about what you are offering your kids and like it’s unattainable to get your child to eat enough variety. That’s why each episode outlines feeding basics that build upon one another to promote the nutritional balance and feeding behaviors you feel good about your child growing up with. Hey friend, I‘m Ashley Smith - registered dietitian nutritionist and a Christian mom who is also making dinner with kids constantly at her ankles. I built this business out of the necessity I saw for getting good nutrition in my own less-than-perfect eaters. From my first child being the kid who was picky early on and yet wouldn’t sleep without a full belly, to the breast feeding nightmares and onset of postpartum anxiety after my second child, to the food intolerances and survival strategies of pandemic parenting with my third child, I know feeding our families amidst the demands of each day can make us all crave instant wins. That’s why I wanted this podcast to become an easy button in your home so you could simply add to cart a few new ideas each week while experiencing my empathy in our shared experiences as moms. So if you‘re ready to find flexible meal + snack ideas that are manageable rather than monotonous...meal planning options that are easily organized instead of overwhelming (and have my busy mom stamp of approval on them)… and eating habits that empower you to regularly offer nutritious food while finding freedom, flexibility, and fun when feeding your family, you are in the right place! Pull up a stool at my kitchen counter and let me pour you a cup of coffee. It’s time to chat about the meal times, messes, moments, and ministry of motherhood. I am thankful you’re here. The Veggies & Virtue podcast is an absolute gem for any parent looking to improve their child's relationship with food. Hosted by Ashley, a pediatric dietitian, this podcast goes beyond just providing tips and tricks for feeding children - it dives into the heart behind it all. The episodes are filled with grace, but also challenge the listener's perspective and approach to feeding their kids. Each episode is eagerly awaited, as they offer valuable insights and practical strategies that can be implemented in our daily lives.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is how Ashley incorporates both professional knowledge and real-life mom hacks. Her easy and fun ways to incorporate nutritious foods into a child's diet are incredibly helpful, especially when dealing with picky eaters. The toddler tips and travel ideas she shares are not only practical but also enjoyable for both kids and parents. Ashley's approachable demeanor and wealth of knowledge shine through in every episode, making her a reliable resource for parents.

If there was one downside to this podcast, it would be the limited number of episodes currently available. As a listener who has benefited greatly from Ashley's advice, I eagerly await each new episode. However, given the quality of the content provided in each episode, it is understandable that they take time to produce. Hopefully, future episodes will be released more frequently to satisfy the growing demand.

This week, we are talking through - How do you handle adding variety when your child has a small “Love it (foods)" list?   Particularly at dinner, this can be challenging to know how to navigate our child's nutritional needs (and/or our perception of them) with what as a family we have on the menu.   We want to make one meal that everyone enjoys, and yet, as a mom alludes to on today's episode, that can feel particularly difficult when our child is really specific about the foods they like. How do we meal plan when our child has such few preferred (love it) foods? If we change from red apples to another kind, does it still work as a love it food? Does milk count as a love it food? We tackle these questions and more in today's episode.   SHOWNOTES: Sign up for my free weekly meal plan. Work through my five-step process for meal planning with my Meal Planning Playbook. On today's episode, I am telling you the meal planning mistake I made last week! I use my own free weekly meal plan for simple, healthy meal ideas for my family. But what I failed to do was actually work through step one from my Meal Planning Playbook. The good news is, as I share on today's episode, we can always course correct midweek and learn from our mistakes next week. And I am thankful for the permission to grow in this area I have learned to give myself instead of setting unrealistically high ideals that exhaust me to try to carry out. It's really, really hard to be consistent with those kinds of self-imposed demands amidst all the real-life demands we as moms carry. So, take your meal plan this week and run it through a real run through, like that outlined in my Meal Planning Playbook. Doing so will help you identify ways that you can make your family's meal plan work smarter for you...so you don't find yourself needing to work harder than you already do! Play Episode Listen Later Feb 14, 2024 22:33

On today's episode, I go over a topic that has come up a lot lately over on social. And that is -    Do we let our kids choose?   This could be choosing what's for breakfast, when they have another snack, or if they eat any of their dinner.   Each of those items is, in fact, a choice. And with that, if our child isn't the one choosing the answer/outcome, then we as the parents likely already have or will.   That's why, I thought this was a helpful segment to reshare from a former group coaching call.   Because I know for many of you, you are likely amidst what I call, role reversal.   Your child is the one deciding what, when, and where they eat. And you, loving parent, are deciding if/whether and how much they eat.   The challenge is this is backwards. And as I will talk through on today's episode, it is assuming too much choice from our kids in areas they aren't equipped to handle. Further, it is often perpetuating a lot of the nutritional problems and power struggles we see in feeding our kids because the role and boundaries are, well, backwards.   So, let's talk through how much choice is healthy to give our kids.   I am confident that after listening or reading through this, you will have a new sense of how to partner with your child (instead of experience the ever so common pushback of parenting or other feeding pitfalls).

Is it okay to sneak healthy things into our kid's food? Whether it be in healthy muffins or a meatball, I know firsthand how tempting it is. We feel like our best option is often to sneak healthy foods in the foods our kids do willingly eat, all in the name of "getting" our kids to eat the foods that they otherwise won't. But is this best practice? Or does this backfire? Fellow moms may feel it is innocent enough and the benefits of sneaking healthy foods outweigh the cons of getting caught. That's why in this episode, I shed some light on what I advise as a feeding expert. I don't share this from a soapbox but rather from the trenches of feeding fussy eaters myself -- three for three, I understand this predicament firsthand with my own! However, if we are going to raise up the next generation to value health and fuel their bodies accordingly, it is important for us to really look at the short-term impact of "getting" our kids to eat healthy foods versus the long-term implications of fostering intrinsic motivation towards eating healthy foods.   Want more support on how to build trust in the feeding relationship?   Whether it be your child sneaking “forbidden foods” from you, or you are feeling the need to save a secret stash of “forbidden foods” until after bedtime (so your kids don't see), these posts can shed some light on how to handle such secrecy: Did you catch your kid with candy wrappers? However, if you are frustrated by your kid only wanting snack foods and struggling to get them to eat more easy, nourishing options, then this episode is going to be a big help. Because, so often, we assume that simply offering healthy snack options to our kids is the answer. When in reality, this requires a major behavior change. That's why, in this episode, we are highlighting how to redefine convenience foods as busy moms. In this four-part series, I am going to spell out four of the most common mistakes I see with snacking and its ties to picky eating. We so often know these issues are happening but can't identify exactly what can be done about them to improve our child's picky eating and add variety to their diet. That's why, I am going to go over 1) what is happening AND 2) what you can do about it so that your child's snacks no longer perpetuate picky eating starting with part 1. We will talk about how consistency in the type of love it food offered creates a sense of comfort that, when left too long, can create problems. Thankfully, there are five simple swaps you can make to your child's preferred snack foods to add variety, expand their list of accepted snacks, and add variety to the foods they enjoy.   SHOWNOTES: Check out the YouTube video of this episode here.
