This episode continued our look at some of the changes taking place across the Marine Corps under #ForceDesign2030, and highlighted an example of practical application and experimentation. Our guests discussed how the Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command contributes to Marine Littoral Regiment (MLR) training and Service-level experimentation. They covered how the exercises prepare deployed forces to assure allies and partners; the defense of key maritime terrain against amphibious assault; counter-landing operations; how the MLR enables naval and joint forces to execute decisive operations in contested space; and a number of other topics, with some great questions from our virtual audience! Merry Christmas, everybody! Today is our annual Christmas episode of the podcast with Austin Grant, Christopher James, and Jesse Knight! This episode was a little bit different from past years Christmas episodes since only half of us are here in LA. That didn't stop me from having Christopher and Jesse on the show though. Both of them phoned into the podcast for their segments of the show. As always, Christopher gave us his terrible, horror themed Christmas movie. This year his selection was the film "Elves". This was so terrible I'm going to have to watch it to see how it comes out. You can watch the trailer for this monstrosity below. The last few years we have also featured a Christmas song on the episode, and this year's choice was "Christmas in LA" from The Killers feat. Dawes. While we're having a great time with Christmas in LA, the song is a little bit sad as it's kind of about the lonely of Christmas in LA, but either way, I like the song and it felt appropriate for our first Christmas in LA. Thank you to everybody for all of your support throughout 2017. We have a lot of incredible things in store for 2018, including a new studio space that we will be recording in! I hope everybody has an amazing Christmas and stays safe with your family and friends. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Enjoy the episode
[paypal-subscribe] In 1985 Mark Hofmann's last bomb blew himself up with his own pipe bomb. Shannon Flynn, a good friend of Mark Hofmann describes what bystanders did to save Hofmann's life. It's a pretty interesting story. When Mark had been blown up, he was lying in the street, and I'll give another little strange [story.] This whole thing is just too weird. There were some people in the area that saw that happen. Several of them ran over to him. There was a fellow by the last name of Christensen who saw that and went over. Mark's shirt was torn a bit and he could see garments, so he knew that guy [Mark] was a member [of the LDS Church], pulled out a little vial of oil and gave him a blessing that he would live. Well he did live. I'll let you all think about that one. What do you think about blessing a criminal to live? Did God honor that blessing? But that bomb didn't just severely injure Hofmann, it blew the lid off Mormon history. We'll talk about the Salamander Letter and the magical world view, and how that really changed things for Mormon history. As an example, the Salamander letter, people said that's going to ruin the church. That completely goes against the standard history of the church. It did go against the basic juvenile understanding that most members have of the church, but that particular concept of salamander or toad, he actually took from Mormonism Unvailed.[1] The concept of Joseph being prevented by that, he took it from a Jesse Knight diary. At the end of the day, it was new information, more, but down the same track. It would not, and in fact it has been proved, I mean it isn't a real letter, but I mean my heavens, Michael Quinn some years later with Mormonism and the Magic World View, he confirmed every bit of it, every bit of it; not the particular animal, but confirmed every bit of it. in 1986 or 1987, Curt Bench put together this Errata for Dean Jesse's book The Personal Writings of Joseph Smith to alert readers to 6 Hofmann forgeries. The 2nd edition, published in 2002 has these forgeries removed. [1]Mormonism Unvailed was the first anti-Mormon book, written in 1834 by E.D. Howe. Dan Vogel has written an annotated copy of the book, complete with footnotes reverencing Howe's claims. See http://amzn.to/2fOpjU7 It turns out that home of Hofmann's forgeries ended up in some scholarly books. Dean Jessee published a book called The Personal Writings of Joseph Smith in 1984 that unfortunately contained some Hofmann forgeries. In 2002, Jessee published a 2nd edition of The Personal Writings of Joseph Smith that removed these forgeries. Second edition is available at http://amzn.to/2fVPuM9 . You can listen to Curt Bench's interview discussing the errata at https://gospeltangents.com/2017/05/22/updated-salamander-letter-podcast/ FAIR Mormon notes one of these forgeries was in both Dean Jessee's book, as well as Michael Quinn's book, The Mormon Hierarchy: Origins of Power (Signature Books, 1994). Jessee had included (and Quinn referenced Jessee's book) that a Hofmann forgery was incorrectly included where Joseph allegedly wrote a letter to Jonathan Dunham asking the Nauvoo Legion to rescue Joseph from Carthage Jail. FAIR notes “Deseret Book and Dean Jesse had also released an errata sheet for his Personal Writings of Joseph Smith, which was available by DATE. [citation needed].” Date is probably around 1986-1987 when Hofmann was sentenced to jail. See https://www.fairmormon.org/answers/Question:_Did_Joseph_order_Jonathan_Dunham,_head_of_the_Nauvoo_legion,_to_rescue_him%3F retrieved 5 October 2017) What are your thoughts regarding Hofmann's forgeries? Are you surprised that Quinn's book still contained the forgery as late as 1994? What do you think God's reaction was to the blessing Hofmann received? https://youtu.be/DIzkTcrvtXU [paypal-donation]

On today's episode, I have writer, comedian, and program director of the Nerdist Showroom, Caitlin Durante! I first met Caitlin a little over a year ago at the Nerdist Showroom after recording an episode of the podcast with Kyle Clark. Kyle told me that Caitlin would be a great guest on the podcast and for the last year I've wanted to have Caitlin on the show. While we were down in Los Angeles last month recording shows, I knew this would be the perfect time to have Caitlin on the show. Austin Grant, Jesse Knight, Christopher James and I sat down with Caitlin in the green room at the Nerdist Showroom to record this episode. On the episode we talked with Caitlin about making the move to Los Angeles, getting involved with Nerdist, working odd jobs, writing screenplays, her monthly stand up show "Luck of the Draw", her podcast "The Bechdel Cast", which focuses on how women are represented in film, great women comics, and so much more. On the episode, we talked with Landon about what inspired him to start acting, some of his influences, making the move to LA, his two current films 'Love Everlasting' & 'The Last Descent', and so much more. Today's episode is Part 2 of our Sundance coverage where I am joined by Jesse Knight, as well as Christopher James and Quinci Staker from the "In Movie Nerds We Trust" Podcast to talk about all of the films that we have had the chance of screening during the festival. All of use watched so many films during the festival. Between the 4 of us, over 30 films were screened! We had so many favorites of the festival, my personal favorite being "The Big Sick". We also talked about the new documentary "Cries From Syria" that was recently acquired by HBO and is very relevant to what is happening within our country now. Some of the many films we talked about were "Crown Heights", "The Incredible Jessica James", "Mudbound", "Dave Made A Maze", "What Lies Upstream", "Cortez", "Killing Ground", "Suck It Up", "Dim The Fluorescents", "Future '38", "Fucking Bunnies", and so many more. I can say we enjoyed a lot more than usual this year, which made a lot of these films really fun. A big Thank You to the Sundance Film Festival for allowing us to cover the festival once again this year. You aren't going to want to miss out these films. Thank you as well to Christopher, Quinci and Jesse for spending the last week freezing at watching these Sundance films. Sundance is always such a great time. As many of you know, I spend a few months leading up to Sundance Producing shows for X96's Radio From Hell show. Merry Christmas, Everybody! On today's episode I sat down with Austin Grant, Jesse Knight, & Christopher James for our 2nd Annual On the Mic Christmas Episode! We've been looking forward to recording this episode for the last several months. As always, Austin makes his special Christmas drink, Christopher shares a terrible holiday movie with us, and complete mayhem breaks out. As always, this year's episode title comes from one of the ridiculous things that Christopher said on the episode. Last year we talked about favorite Christmas movies, but this year we turned our attention to Christmas music. I'm not a fan of traditional Christmas music, but I do love the punk renditions of Christmas songs. On the episode we opened presents, talked about our favorite Rock/Punk Christmas songs, our favorite childhood memories, Christmas Traditions, family time, our Christmas plans this year and so much more. We had such a great time recording this episode and I'm glad our schedules allowed the four of us to record this episode again this year. This week's episode of the podcast is a special episode, recorded live on the steps of the old Charlie Chaplin studios in Hollywood! Christopher James and Jesse Knight join me on the steps of the old Chaplin Studios, now the Jim Henson Studios, to talk about Charlie Chaplin and his films. Jesse and I had discussed recording an episode like this for a while, and with Christopher hosting the "In Movie Nerds We Trust" podcast, we figured this would be the perfect time for a mashup episode. In the episode we talked about the great impact that Charlie Chaplin's films had on us as kids and how it first helped grow our love for film and comedy. We talked about how Chaplin's films manage to still relate to events today, as well as the culture impact of his time, his filmmaking process, some of the iconic figures that visited the Chaplin Studios, Chaplin's legacy and more. I'm so glad that we were finally able to record this episode on the steps on the Chaplin Studios. Many people don't know that Jesse is a huge Chaplin fan, and being here to talk Chaplin films was really special for Jesse. Chaplin's films have meant a lot to all of us and we would encourage all of you listening to check out the massive collection of Charlie Chaplin's work. Enjoy the episode! Topic: Trends in Filmmaking, both commercial and independent. Casting, shooting, editing, scriptwriting, fundraising, financing, distribution, promotion and camera technology are all discussed. Three Interviews: Stephen L. Antczak (who works in commercial films); and two Indy filmmakers: Jesse Knight (of Jesse Knight Films) and Jason Buterin (of Mad Ones Films). News Item: I landed on two "best seller" lists at Amazon.com. My nonfiction book entitled Indistinguishable from Magic: Predictions of Revolutionary Future Science was #9 best seller on the "Science & Math" list, and #42 best seller on the "Astronomy" list. (And yes, I took a screen shot. Maybe I will frame it.) As you can imagine the number one spot on both of these lists was held by Stephen Hawking. Here is my book's description from its page on Amazon.com: This 29-page collection of six articles--written by an experienced futurist who has interviewed over 300 people for their opinion about the future--describes several of the far future scientific and technological innovations which will transform our civilization from what it is now into an exponentially larger, faster, stronger and more dynamic civilization than can be contained on this planet, or in this solar system, or within this universe. These technologies will allow us to expand through those boundaries and find new unimagined boundaries beyond them to break through. Article Titles -- We Will Transmute the Elements; We Will Develop Many Completely New Physics; My Father's Watch; Hidden-Life May be More Common on Planets than Non-Hidden: And Earth May be No Exception; The Universal Diagram; Engineering Space: Altering This Universe and Making New Ones. Hosted by Stephen Euin Cobb, this is the August 27, 2014 episode of The Future And You. [Running time: 46 minutes] These three interviews were recorded on May 31, 2014 in Charlotte NC, at the SF&F convention ConCarolinas.
