Outlouders, enjoy this free taste of Mia in full flight on today's subscriber episode. Listen to the complete episode of Scurrilous Gossip - Karl Stefanovic, Melania Trump & Sydney Sweeney, oh my at 5pm today. Not a subscriber? This is where all that can change. Outlouders, gather 'round. Mia Freedman is back in the studio with Holly Wainwright and Em Vernem, with a few pieces of scurrilous gossip she’s dying to unpack. First up, the breakfast TV king himself. Karl Stefanovic is launching a podcast, and Mia has thoughts on what exactly this means. Plus, we need to talk about Sydney Sweeney’s new lingerie brand, Syrn. (It’s pronounced 'Siren'... apparently). We deep-dive into that viral Hollywood sign video and ask: Is this actually a new era of 'post-feminist' empowerment, or are we just being sold the same old story in better lighting? And, there’s a new documentary about Melania Trump. The team investigates the very curious reports of seat-filling incentives to make the film’s launch look like a hit. So, is anyone actually watching it, or is it all just "fake news"? Remember, this is just a little subs snackette. The full debrief drops for subscribers at 5pm. Tim Conway Jr. on Demand

We kick things off with one of life’s most important questions: what kind of person hangs a portrait of themselves? From Wayne Gretzky holding records for… holding records, to Mark Thompson’s mysterious 8x10 glossy celebrity photo on his nightstand, we debate ego, legacy, and — inevitably — what side of the bed do you sleep on? Then we get into relationships. Do you have a snoring problem? We share the unspoken rules of sleep, compromise, and a few secrets to a great marriage, because nothing tests love quite like a bad night’s sleep. Next, a growing concern: younger kids gambling on sports. After Ben Affleck told Jimmy Kimmel that his son asked him for gambling money, we talk about how betting went from bookies and guys “running numbers” to apps on every phone — and what parents should be paying attention to. We roll into “Good Times Go Bad” with Mark Thompson, looking at a new Gen Z reality: parents applying for jobs for their kids — and even showing up to interviews with them. Is it support, or is it too much? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

EPISODE 117 -  “STEVE AND NAN DISCUSS: MOVIES ABOUT MOVIES” - 12/08/25  In the latest episode of From Beneath the Hollywood Sign, we pull back the curtain on the cinematic world of making movies about… making movies. We dive deep into the movies that reveal what really happens behind the scenes in Tinseltown—sometimes with affection, sometimes as a cautionary tale to be careful what you wish for. Movies like Sullivan's Travels (1941), Singin' in the Rain (1952), and Sunset Boulevard (1950), all offer a fascinating look at the machinations that go into making films. This week, we'll be discussing six lesser known moves that five us a peak behind the scenes and show us very different sides of the not-always-so-glamorous ways that Hollywood works. Across genres and generations, these films offer an insider's view not just of how Hollywood works, but of the dreams, delusions, and dramas that make moviemaking an art form all its own. They explore the current state of the economy, the challenges posed by inflation, and the implications of government intervention in the market. The discussion also highlights the differences in investment perspectives between older and younger generations, as well as the importance of financial planning in navigating these uncertain times. Takeaways Market volatility is influenced by economic uncertainty and government policies. Interest rates are a critical factor in shaping market dynamics and investor behavior. Gold is viewed as a safe haven amidst geopolitical risks and inflation concerns. Real estate remains a significant asset for many clients, especially in high-value areas. Alternative investments are gaining traction as a means to diversify portfolios. Lower interest rates could stimulate housing demand but may not significantly impact high-net-worth clients. Market valuations are currently high, raising concerns about potential downside risks. Government intervention in markets raises questions about the future of economic stability. Digital assets like Bitcoin are becoming more mainstream but remain highly speculative. Younger investors are more open to alternative investments compared to older generations.

REWIND EPISODE FROM THE LF&F ARCHIVES (Synopsis)-  Under the view of the iconic Hollywood Sign, a struggle is being waged over the future of policing and incarceration. Los Angeles is ground zero for fights over the job of District Attorney, Police Chief, and the size of prisons and jails. Corporations that have profited from prison communications are now profiting on electronic monitoring. Can today's Los Angeles change the script?Stay informed and engaged! Don't miss out on our captivating weekly episodes that dive deep into the heart of our economy, culture, and politics from the past to the present. Please hit the podcast subscribe button if you've yet to subscribe.[The following Special Report from Los Angeles was originally released July 2024]Description: Over the past weekend, Los Angeles was rocked by reports of intensified ICE raids across Southern California, heightening fear and anxiety in immigrant communities. Families were detained in early morning operations, and community advocates quickly mobilized to provide legal support and rapid response. These raids are a stark reminder that, in California—a so-called sanctuary state—immigration enforcement continues to be deeply entangled with local policing and incarceration systems. This episode of Laura Flanders & Friends takes on renewed relevance as it explores LA's central role in shaping and challenging carceral policy. Under the shadow of the Hollywood Sign, Laura speaks with activists and officials confronting the legacy and present reality of policing in a state where SWAT teams were born, Reagan and Nixon launched punitive platforms, and the prison construction boom took root.At a moment when ICE raids reveal the persistent overlap between federal enforcement and local law, and corporate interests profit from alternatives like electronic monitoring, the episode asks: Can Los Angeles write a new story—one rooted in decarceration and community power? With criminal justice reform at the heart of election-year debates (2024), this conversation spotlights the people resisting criminalization from inside and outside the system. “When we talk about closing Men's Central Jail, yes, we're trying to close that particular building, but what it requires is every jail in our county to reduce its population . . . We're trying to decarcerate globally across the jail system, that will then allow us to close this monument of essentially torture in our communities.” - Mark-Anthony Clayton-Johnson“What if something went off and said that I wasn't where I was supposed to be, and all these cops showed up? . . . At [the age of] 15 thinking the cops are going to show up . . . that is one thing that I will always say that shamed me in my life. I felt unworthy. I felt like I was a bad person.” - Sheila Natt“. . . 94% of the people that are terminated from the electronic monitoring program pre-trial are terminated on technical violations . . . If the point is to use this electronic monitoring to help people stay out of jail and come to court, why are the technical violations leading you right back into jail?” - Anthony RoblesGuests:•. In my very special Halloween episode, I explore true crime, sex work, and media of the 1980s through the lens of this summer's horror hit MaXXXine. It is the third film in Ty West's trilogy. Maxine isn't worried about crime, Aids, or drug addiction. She is concerned with fame, or as she says, “I will not accept a life I do not deserve.” The adage is a gift from her father, a preacher turned serial killer who represents the patriarchy in its purest form. The buxom bootstrap babe makes her way through Hollywood in a twisty and turny homage of a film that climaxes on the Hollywood Sign in a standoff with a shotgun to her daddy's face. My sources for this film include Michael Connely's podcast turned mini-series The Wonderland Massacre & the Secret History of Hollywood and the Netflix docuseries Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer.

Los Angeles is ground zero for fights over the job of District Attorney, Police Chief, and the size of prisons and jails. It recently became one of the only cities in the US to cancel construction of a jail. Activists have forced out two police chiefs, while conservatives have brought two recall petitions against the DA. Corporations that have profited from prison communications are now profiting on electronic monitoring. And in this election year, with criminal justice reform a major issue, how are activists pushing back against false narratives on crime? Looking at the fight inside and outside the system, Laura Flanders talks to activists and elected officials in Los Angeles. All this from the city where SWAT teams were invented, from the state where Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon launched their careers, and the nationwide boom in prison construction was born.
