This week's monument is the Hollywood sign, an icon of the US city of Los Angeles and a symbol of the mighty US film industry. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In my very special Halloween episode, I explore true crime, sex work, and media of the 1980s through the lens of this summer's horror hit MaXXXine. It is the third film in Ty West's trilogy. Maxine isn't worried about crime, Aids, or drug addiction. She is concerned with fame, or as she says, “I will not accept a life I do not deserve.” The adage is a gift from her father, a preacher turned serial killer who represents the patriarchy in its purest form. The buxom bootstrap babe makes her way through Hollywood in a twisty and turny homage of a film that climaxes on the Hollywood Sign in a standoff with a shotgun to her daddy's face. My sources for this film include Michael Connely's podcast turned mini-series The Wonderland Massacre & the Secret History of Hollywood and the Netflix docuseries Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer.

In this episode, we delve into one of Hollywood's most tragic and enduring legends—the story of Peg Entwistle, the actress whose name has become synonymous with the darker side of the silver screen. In 1932, Peg's dreams of stardom were shattered, leading her to a fateful climb up the iconic Hollywood Sign. Her leap from the "H" would immortalize her in a way she never anticipated, as her ghostly presence is said to linger in the hills of Los Angeles today. Slayin' It! with Juliet Landau
This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: Under the view of the iconic Hollywood Sign, a struggle is being waged over the future of policing and incarceration. Los Angeles is ground zero for fights over the job of District Attorney, Police Chief, and the size of prisons and jails. It recently became one of the only cities in the US to cancel construction of a jail. Activists have forced out two police chiefs, while conservatives have brought two recall petitions against the DA. Corporations that have profited from prison communications are now profiting on electronic monitoring. And in this election year, with criminal justice reform a major issue, how are activists pushing back against false narratives on crime? Looking at the fight inside and outside the system, Laura Flanders talks to activists and elected officials in Los Angeles. All this from the city where SWAT teams were invented, from the state where Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon launched their careers, and the nationwide boom in prison construction was born. Are you ready, are you ready? Damit Rick in seinem neuen Beruf als – ja was überhaupt? Paul Ripke aus Heidelberg wettet: You can not outtrain Paul Ripke. Challenge accepted?
This week the docs review the true crime documentary, “I AM VANESSA GUILLEN”. The doc is a 2022 Netflix original directed by Christy Wegener that recounts the horrific story of a young U.S. soldier who was brutally murdered at Fort Hood military base by another soldier. As well as guiding the audience through the brutal commission of the crime, the documentary also follows Vanessa's family - who are determined to reveal the truth of their daughter's experience of assault by taking their case all the way to Congress. “Hallo? Hört man mich?” Beide können so also ausschließlich gewinnen. Genial!? Was man halt so macht. Almost a year ago, New York Community Bank (NYSE: NYCB) acquired Signature Bank's assets as a fresh banking crisis had emerged almost overnight. The fallout from the failure of Silicon Valley Bank wreaked havoc on financial markets and raised fears of a 2008 scenario.Over the past week, those fears have again come to life. NYCB issued a dismal earnings report, followed by a set of questionable disclosures. The stock tumbled, and commercial real estate values are again in question. With more write-offs and loan losses surely to come, why are many of the S&P Real Estate Sector fund components showing signs of life and stock price momentum? We pose this question to our guest, Katie Stockton, of Fairlead Funds.Fairlead recently added The Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLRE) to their portfolio based on proprietary research utilizing technical analysis. Mortgage rates, which were in the 2-3% range during Covid, have recently retreated from the eight percent level and are bouncing between 6.5 and 7%.The stock market has reached new highs, unemployment is low, and job creation is strong. What comes next? What would John Bogle, founder of Vanguard Funds, comment if he were alive today? Would he continue to advocate for long-term investing in low-cost index-related funds? Yes.What does our guest, Katie Stockton, a Chartered Market Technician, have to say about current market conditions? Let's find out. Technical analysis is a methodology using charts and trends for forecasting the direction of prices through the study of past market data, primarily price and volume. Additionally, momentum and relative strength.1Fundamental analysis, in accounting and finance, is the analysis of a business's financial statements (usually to analyze the business's assets, liabilities and earnings); health; and competitors and markets.2GuestKatie Stockton, CMT is Founder and Managing Partner of Fairlead Strategies, LLC, an independent research firm and investment advisor focused on technical analysis. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Hollywood Sign. It's been at the center of scandals, PR stunts, and more during its time perched up on Mount Lee. In 1978, the Hollywood Sign was in a sad state, so rock legend Alice Cooper spent $27,000 to buy an “O” to honor his friend Groucho Marx. Other celebs followed. Artist Zach Fernandez marked California's marijuana legalization by turning the Hollywood Sign into “Hollyweed.” It was tough to pull off due to security around the sign.

Wayne McFarland is a retired CEO and author. He's fun and hilarious, and it shows in his writing. That's what makes his book different from other memoirs. Tales from the days available on Amazon and barns and noble. Check him out at talesfromtheday.com (Book description) Yeah, this is a memoir of sorts, if shark fishing in one's underwear, roping a bear, getting drunk with your grandfather, or losing 10 grand at the Hollywood Sign is a memoir. "The Day Johnny Cash Hit On My Wife" is on the roster as well, for the only name drop in all the stories. There's also a thing about getting shot in Arkansas and a road trip with a monkey. I can't deny these were life-shaping events, but truth be told, they all happened under the heading of “oops”. It's the run up to the surf lesson: Joe's been on holiday to California and David wants to know all about it. Joe confesses he struggles to say LAX as it's embarrasing and babbles on about the Hollywood Sign, seeing Jared Leto's house and the 9 lane traffic on the freeway. Eventually they get to the meaty bit when Joe reveals he's had a surfing lesson at the end of the holiday. David is all ears. The discussion turns to mid life crisis's and Joe's surfboard being akin to David's new guitar. Joe tells David that he felt empowered having his surf lesson but now just feels embarrassed.
