MOVIE DISCUSSION: Sheila Gregoire: Bare Marriage Podcast / Bare Marriage Blog / Author Page Sheila Gregoire of the Bare Marriage podcast joins Melvin to discuss The Assistant, a hidden gem of pure psychological drama! It's depiction of modern office work in the film industry is understated, dour, and timely, as it tackles a combination of workplace inequality, systematic issues, and the thin line between the complacent and the complicit.Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 21-minutes discussing a report finding that bait, controversy, and enragement posting bolstered lucrative engagement on Threads (similar to other social media), and how this negatively impacts the platform, but also demands we utilize them in a healthier way. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)The Assistant is a bleak depiction of not only workplace abuse but also of human relationships.Although uneventful, the film has perpetual unease and eeriness.Sheila observed how the film depicts food, and the two discuss its non-nutritious showcase of a biological workplace distraction.Medication plays a significant role in the setting of the film, making overt allusions to the film's boss as a caricature of Harvey Weinstein.Exploitation, abuse, and unethical practices in a company are ultimately anti-capitalist, even if the line is going up and to the right.Pondering if abusive hierarchical structures are more common and dangerous in the church than in the workplace.Sheila, “Often we feel like when we are in these situations that we are powerless… but quite often we do.”Is Jane complicit?Recommendations:For Our Daughters (2024) (Short Film)TÁR (2022) (Movie)Bombshell (2018) (Movie)MAILBAG: Send questions with your first name and we'll answer them in future episodes! On season 9, episode 8 of Paid in Puke Podcast, we're sorting through Kitty Green's 2019 drama, "The Assistant". It stars Julia Garner, as the titular assistant at a high-powered New York film production office, who navigates a particularly trying day at work. While this is a "me too" movie, and the nameless boss in question bares some resemblance, The Assistant is not about Weinstein. Instead, it captures an all-too pervasive systematic conspiracy to allow powerful men to assault women without repercussions. The Assistant is also relatable anyone who has ever had a job description vague enough to become the office task dumpster. We love this movie, Kitty Green's unique ability to capture the sinister tone of misogynist micro-aggressions, and Julia Garner's nuanced frown. On the Lunchtime Poll, we reveal the dumbest thing a boss has ever asked of us.
The Royal Hotel - Lohn das Einchecken | Review Kritik Am 11. We have a double-header on our latest episode of Soundtracking - so busy are we at the moment. First up are writer/director Molly Manning Walker and songwriter, producer, DJ and composer James Jacob - who goes by the professional soubriquet of Jakwob. They join Edith to discuss Molly's powerful and important debut feature, How To Have Sex, which has already scooped a major award at Cannes. How To Have Sex deals with that very particular rite of passage for girls of a certain age, as three young female friends travel to Crete in search of sun, sand and, possibly, you know what ... We also have writer / director Kitty Green to talk about her psychological thriller, The Royal Hotel, which sees two backpackers land jobs in a remote Australian bar, with events uncoiling thereafter in a truly gripping and suspenseful fashion.
Film history is full of troublesome hotels, isn't it? A few of them we've even covered on this very show, from the haunted Overlook in The Shining to the labyrinthine, unsettling Airbnb in Barbarian – the kinds of places that make you vow to never complain about a Premier Inn again. This week, revered writer-director Kitty Green releases a thriller that adds to that long list with the sublime The Royal Hotel – an at times unbearably tense exploration of gender and toxic masculinity, set in rural Australian. On today's episode of Script Apart, Kitty stops by for a spoiler breakdown of the movie, in which two young women in need of money check into a dilapidated pub in a remote mining town. What happens next, as the line is blurred between drunken boys-will-be-boys and truly dangerous behaviour, is impossible to tear your eyes away from, beautifully written and impeccably directed. In the conversation you're about to hear, Kitty tells us about her own family connections to the mining town pub culture depicted in the film, which was co-written with Oscar Redding. We unpack what's going on in the heads of the film's two leads, Hannah and Liv, as they encounter some of the community's many microaggressions towards them. She also breaks down the film's connections to her last movie, The Assistant, and what the two dramas combined express about the epidemic of male violence towards women. Please be sure to check out the film before listening as this episode has more spoilers than you can shake a taxidermied snake at.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Kitty Green's new ROYAL HOTEL takes the rural Australian bar-culture setting of 1971's WAKE IN FRIGHT and explores how placing two young women in the role of outsider changes the threat level. We start this week by parsing the film's micro- and mega-aggressions, and whether those inflicting them are capital-B Bad men, or just regular men wrapped up in bad power dynamics. Then we bring WAKE IN FRIGHT back in to consider how both films are on some level about the intertwined desires for identity and acceptance, as well as alcohol's deleterious effect on both. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about WAKE IN FRIGHT, ROYAL HOTEL, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Kitty Green's new THE ROYAL HOTEL follows two women stranded amid the oppressive masculinity of a rough-and-tumble Australian mining town, a purposeful gender subversion of Ted Kotcheff's 1971 Australian cult classic WAKE IN FRIGHT. We begin our two-week journey through the fringes of civilization with a trip to WAKE IN FRIGHT's “the Yabba” to discuss how the film's more harrowing elements, including its infamous kangaroo hunt, play in a context of sheer lawlessness, debate whether it feels like a representative Australian film, and try to decipher the strange allure of “two up.” And in Feedback, we consider a couple of listener-submitted contenders for our informal and always-expanding list of the greatest sci-fi of the 21st century. It's a banner of an episode on Spoilerpiece this week. Megan and Dave agree on not one, but TWO movies! Christmas comes twice a year, baby! After a little pre-movie yappin', they get into NO ONE WILL SAVE YOU (2:46), Brian Duffield's sci-fi horror film starring Kaitlyn Dever, about the long-term fallouts of personal trauma masquerading as an alien invasion flick. Then it's THE ROYAL HOTEL (28:43), Kitty Green's latest Julia Garner-led movie. This time around, Garner and co-star Jessica Henwick, American tourists, end up working in Australia's most remote and most misogynist bar (a guess, but seems on-target) in this psychological thriller. If you're a patron, please head over to the Patreon and listen to this week's bonus episode on WHEN A STRANGER CALLS, the winner of our home invasion poll. G'day!

It's basically Taylor Swift Eve on the podcast, and in the movie world, but we've got three new movies to discuss. First, it's David Gordon Green's NEXT horror direct sequel, "The Exorcist: Believer." Then it's Kitty Green's "The Assistant" followup, "The Royal Hotel." And then we've got the "erotic thriller" from Netflix, "Fair Play." None of these movies have Taylor Swift in them. Yet. We have much to say about each of them, so join us!STRIKE NOTE: This episode was produced during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labour of the writers and actors currently on strike, the films discussed here wouldn't exist.BONUS CONTENT: Apologies, due to conflicting Thanksgiving schedules, we do not have a bonus episode this week. A return to the weekly movie reviews brings ten new films into the fold for Erik Childress & Steve Prokopy. They include a documentary on an Oscar-winning producer (The Storms of Jeremy Thomas) and a baffling story of love featuring Peter Dinklage and two Oscar winners (She Came To Me). The horrors of October are starting to come out with another chapter in the long-running anthology (V/H/S/85), the first of two tales of families and possession this week (When Evil Lurks) plus what happens when you mix Scream with Back to the Future (Totally Killer). There is more real life horror revisiting the shifting power dynamics of a Sundance relationship (Fair Play), the true-life tale of when to remain silent (Miranda's Victim) and the true-life-inspired tale of vacationing women and the toxic bar they get jobs in (The Royal Hotel). Finally it seems fitting that on the week that David Gordon Green attempts his own follow-up to one of the greatest horror films ever (The Exorcist: Believer), the late director of that classic would see the debut of his final film about how a new generation thinks they know more than the one they follow (The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial). 0:00 - Intro 1:31 - Fair Play 16:08 - Miranda's Victim 24:56 - The Storms of Jeremy Thomas 29:56 - She Came To Me 38:24 - V/H/S/85 44:43 - When Evil Lurks 53:24 - The Royal Hotel 1:05:47 - Totally Killer 1:19:37 - The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial 1:34:52 - The Exorcist: Believer 1:55:12 - Outro
Directed by Kitty Green, The Royal Hotel tells the story of Hanna and Liv (Julia Garner and Jessica Henwick), two best friends who embark on a backpacking trip across the Australian Outback. When their money runs dry, the two are forced to take on temporary work in a bar called ‘The Royal Hotel'. However, what begins as a simple way to make some extra cash soon begins to spiral out of their control, exposing a riotous world of male dominance in the midst of the desert. In this 1on1, we speak to Green about the most dangerous men and fighting back against male toxicity.

Erik Childress flies solo on this one detailing his full experience at this year's event. He shares his thoughts on over 25 films ranging from new titles from Richard Linklater, Alexander Payne and Kitty Green to even actors getting behind the camera including Anna Kendrick, Michael Keaton and Patricia Arquette. There are films with songs, stories with cops, drug dealers, hit men and serial killers plus two of the year's very best films about teachers. Tales of everything from WWII to Spring Break, apocalyptic combat to Chicago's Cabrini Green. Not every film is a dream though one certainly has a fun time with them not to mention the emphasis on women's stories and trying to find peace in a world of bad men and at least one they call their father. Good stuff, great stuff and some really bad stuff in another festival season. 0:00 - Intro 1:10 – Flipside 5:27 - We Grown Now 8:46 - Flora and Son 14:30 - The Teachers' Lounge 18:01 – Getting To Toronto and The First Screening 20:15 - Gonzo Girl 22:39 - Working Class Goes To Hell 25:04 – Dicks: The Musical 28:23 - How To Have Sex 31:24 - Reptile 35:00 - Backspot 37:55 - Woman of the Hour 42:03 - Finestkind 44:23 - Boy Kills World 50:52 - Dream Scenario 57:59 - The Holdovers 1:04:27 - Lee 1:07:53 - The Zone of Interest 1:09:16 - The End We Start From 1:12:46 - Knox Goes Away 1:16:10 - Hell of a Summer 1:18:12 - The Movie Teller 1:20:31 - The Royal Hotel 1:27:25 - Hitman 1:32:11 - His Three Daughters 1:36:47 - Pain Hustlers 1:40:34 - Last Summer 1:43:10 - Outro

Today Anna Smith talks to Director Tina Satter about her gripping debut feature, Reality. The story was originally a play directed by Satter in 2019, Is This a Room, and in this episode Anna talks to the director about the progression to cinema, both of the story and of her as a director, and what compelled her to make this her debut. Reality is based on the incredible true story of a young woman called Reality Winner, played by Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria, The White Lotus, Sharp Objects), who stirred up a media storm when she leaked a classified report about Russian interference in U.S. elections. The film uses transcripts of the real conversations Reality Winner had with government agents as its dialogue, creating a sense of both absolute honesty in the storytelling, as well as gripping tension. Fellow film critic Linda Marric also joins Anna to give her insight into the film, and what makes it her “favourite film of 2023”. Anna and Linda discuss how Tina Satter's directorial choices inform the audience's experience of a true story on screen, and their thoughts on Sydney Sweeney's central performance.
