Gary Nicholls is a British photographic artist taking the steampunk world by storm, he is preparing to release the first tranche of his conceptualised neo-gothic fairy story eponymously based on the Victorian fairground attractions of The Imaginarium. This fantastical tale celebrates the redemption of one woman’s journey from ruination to salvation. Gary doesn’t just take photographs. He uses photographs to create art. The 60-strong collection of images will ultimately be printed on metal and exhibited on steampunk easels alongside the handmade props and costumes that feature in the storyline. Drawing on varied and eclectic sources of inspiration such as Joel Grimes, Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter, Sting and his very own highly talented and creative team, Gary ‘sees’ images that weave themselves organically into an overall story. He then sets about building them in layers from multiple photographs taken personally from locations as diverse as New York City, Barcelona and his own back garden. This week's conversation with Joel Grimes ties together several subjects - entrepreneurship, art, passion, hard work, intuition, competition in the marketplace, and overcoming obstacles. Drawing upon his real world experience as an acclaimed photographer, who nearly gave up on his dream were it not for a college professor who encouraged him to move beyond a limitation some would consider a non-starter for a photographer, Joel shares marketplace insights relevant to everyone from CEOs to students. Joel teaches classes all over the world related to lighting and photography, and he holds the distinction of being both one of Canon's Explorers of Light and one of Adobe Photoshop's Spotlight Artists. Additionally, he continues to work as a professional commercial photographer in Arizona and around the world. On this episode of the podcast we sit down with Commercial Photographer, Canon Explorer of Light, and Teacher Joel Grimes. As a kid, Joel was always creative, but it wasn't until his freshman year in high school that Joel finally picked up a camera and knew that he had found the art form he was looking for. Although Joel had some early success in the world of photography and was building a national client base, it wasn't until he decided to completely reinvent himself, and his overall look, that he suddenly burst on to the scene as a recognizable name. Using a three light setup, composites, and somewhat of a grunge look, Joel became a very sought after commercial shooter. Soon he began teaching others how he created the look and realized that he really enjoyed teaching. After several public speaking events, he created a video tutorial system and started teaching his own personal workshops across the country. Joel has gone onto to shoot some of world's top athletes, worked on huge ad campaigns, and continued to help others to realize their own dreams in photography. During this conversation we get the chance to ask Joel what has kept him excited about photography for all of these years, how he deals with sometimes being "pigeonholed" for a certain aesthetic, the amount of personal projects he tries to challenge himself with every year, and the advice he gives to others on building a portfolio. So enjoy this talk with Joel Grimes. Joel Grimes describes himself as an illusionist, a photographer who has created his personal stamp on the art of photography. His unique style for creating portraits, especially of sports figures, have made him a a popular and in-demand photographer for a host of commercial and editorial clients and increasingly, as an educator. Though his work involves him being a technician of sorts, he creates photographs with the vision of an artist. www.thecandidframe.com thecandidframe@gmail.com
