One of my favorite parts of doing this podcast is that I get to discover and meet some amazing photographers, and L.A. based Nikon Ambassador Joey Terrill is a perfect example. We've all joked about a photographer we know being able to "shoot anything", but in reality very few people can truly shoot any subject matter. There are a few out there though, Joe McNally comes to mind, that just get it. Their photography seems to breath it's own air, and be alive. Joey is one of those talents. His career has included a range of specialties including architecture and interior design, advertising and corporate photography, golf course landscapes, and editorial portraiture, and his macro photography is fascinating. Joey's website has three galleries, Portraits, Scenes, and Macro, and if you spend a little time there you'll get some insight into how Joey sees the world. Perhaps this quote from his website sums it up best: "My camera is the window through which I experience life" From extreme close-up or a vast valley, to a portrait of a corporate CEO made to look like a star, Mr. Terrill just seems to understand what we are doing when we take a photo. He understands how to make a viewer feel something, as though they've been invited into the scene. That, my friend, is a skill I wish I had. Joey has worked with clients like American Express, Coca-Cola, Disney, Golf Digest, Major League Baseball, Nikon, Red Bull and Sports Illustrated. As an educator he teaches workshops and speaks at seminars including PhotoPlus Expo, WPPI, CES, Imaging USA, and of course Nikon School. Join photographer and Nikon Ambassador Joey Terrill and me as we dive into the artistic world of his macro photography, on this Behind the Shot. My Favorite Photography Gear and Gadget Finds of 2020

TOGCHAT Photography Podcast with Joe Edelman

As 2020 draws to a close, I want to share with you some of my favorite GEAR and GADGET finds from the past year. Photographers often hear the quote, “it's not the camera that makes the picture, it is the photographer”.  They usually hear it from a person who has tens of thousands of dollars worth of camera gear. I like to take a slightly more practical approach and that is simply that all the gear in the world won't make you a great photographer, but the right gear can make your task much easier and help elevate the quality of your work.  How's that for politically correct?  But it's true.  At the end of the day if you don't build a solid foundation of photography knowledge — you know that physics stuff, and if you don't make a real effort to be creative — well then all that gear will not really matter. Let's keep it real — we all like our toys and for me, when I find a toy that makes my job easier or helps me simplify something — that is a big win in my books. I have links to all of these in the show notes.  Full disclosure — a few of the links are affiliate links, so I will make a few pennies if you use the links, but I assure you — I am not being paid to show any of this gear and these are pieces that I actively use in my daily work. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Links for Episode #228 of the TOGCHAT Photography Podcast  Olympus Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/getolympus I hope to see you at 1:00PM ET on 12/3 for my exclusive livestream. Our offices are just a few blocks from the convention center where the annual PhotoPlus Expo is held, and each year we wander over with our portable recorders to chat with the exhibitors whose new gear catches our eye. We approach large vendors and small and try to give our listeners a peek into the “the largest photography and imaging event in North America.” This year, we spoke with representatives from Sky-Watcher regarding this company’s motorized astro-photography mounts; Chimera about its new lighting products; and Orangemonkie about its portable lightbox studios. We also chatted with a rep from Fujifilm about the new X-Pro3 Mirrorless camera; with folk from Hahnemühle, the oldest active paper mill in Germany, and their new natural line of inkjet papers; with a representative from Viltrox, about their new lenses and adapters; and finally, with Allesandro Gibellini, the founder of Gibellini cameras and its beautiful large format cameras.   After a short break, we are joined by the two winners of our B&H Photography Podcast Panasonic LUMIX S1 Sweepstakes. This sweepstakes concluded in August, but we wanted the winners to have time to experiment with their new cameras and lenses before we requested feedback from them on how they like the gear and how it might effect their photography. We are joined by Joseph Lockwood, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, winner of the Panasonic Lumix DC-S1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 24-105mm lens; and then by Roger Longenbach, winner of the Panasonic LUMIX DC-G95 Mirrorless Camera with 12-60mm lens. Gary Vaynerchuk and I gave a co-keynote in NYC at Photo Plus Expo. My background is as a creator turned entrepreneur, and Gary’s a born entrepreneur and then realized that creativity was how he was going to take his business to the next level. Unsurprisingly, we both ended up in roughly the same space. Instead of delivering a keynote that showed my own pictures or videos or stories like I’ve done at PhotoPlus in the past, we decided to co-host a Q&A and answer 3 audience members’ biggest current struggles. I’ve been getting a ton of great feedback on the Q&A style keynotes I’ve been doing, so I’m pumped to share another one with you. In today's episode, Jason has a growing portrait business in Chicago, but seems to have plateaued on the money that he’s able to make using his current strategies. We let him leave the stage only after offering a new blueprint for how to set his prices to make the kind of money he dreams of. Niki has been hustling like crazy shooting volume to grow her brand, but now she’s getting antsy not making money even though she’s so busy. She seemed to know all the answers before asking, but needed to hear from us. Patience and the power of intention will take you as far as you want to go if you’re willing to stay in the game long enough. Richard has been grinding at his podcast for 11 years, trying to make enough money to support his craft. We find that with all the experience that he has, he’s certainly got options, but hasn’t gotten creative enough about his strategy. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. CreativeLive is the world's largest hub for online creative education in photo/video, art/design, music/audio, craft/maker and the ability to make a living in any of those disciplines. They are high quality, highly curated classes taught by the world’s top experts -- Pulitzer, Oscar, Grammy Award winners, New York Times best selling authors and the best entrepreneurs of our times.

On this episode #8 “We Shoot Mirrorless” podcast episode for November 2017, Scott and Marco discuss these new products and mirrorless topics:   This show is sponsored by B&H: https://bhpho.to/2htc5AL   Scott shares his experiences from visit Photo Plus Expo in New York and Marco talks about his 48h trip to Berlin.   Sony announced a new camera. The a7rIII 42MP full frame camera comes with some nice speed, shutter and battery improvements. https://bhpho.to/2hrBlXX   Sony also announced two new lenses for their mirrorless E mount. The Sony FE 24-105 f4 G OSS lens is a fairly light and versatile zoom. And the FE 400mm f2.8 GM OSS is still in development and is expected to launch in summer 2018. https://bhpho.to/2Aw4Bk0   Olympus announced two new fast prime lenses from their PRO lineup. According to Scott and some early reviewers the M.ZUIKO Digital ED 17mm F1.2 PRO and M.ZUIKO Digital ED 45mm F1.2 PRO will be game changers for their light gathering and shallow depth of field and bokeh. The lenses can be pre-ordered now. 17mm f1.2: https://bhpho.to/2htbn6z 45mm f1.2: https://bhpho.to/2AvF4aM   Canon introduced the PowerShot G1 X Mark III. It is a fixed zoom lens camera that has a 24 MP APS-C sensor with dual pixel AF and Digic 7 processor and a fixed 24-72mm equivalent zoom lens with the fastest aperture between f2.8-5.6. It shoots bursts of up to 9fps and can record video at 1080/60p video. It weighs only 400g or 14oz and is like a fixed zoom lens version of the EOS M5 interchangeable lens camera. https://bhpho.to/2hs5PJw   Hasselblad adds two new lenses to their lens roadmap. The XCD 80mm (63mm FF equivalent - aperture is still unknown) and the XCD 135mm f2.8 plus a dedicated 1.7x teleconverter. http://www.hasselblad.com/lenses/x-system   Hasselblad has released a firmware update for the X1D.  This FW 1.19  update adds more options to make the camera more overall more customizable. They have also added support for V system lenses.   Leica now offers their 28mm full frame fixed focal length Leica Q camera in a silver edition. https://bhpho.to/2AvDCVQ   Leica has resurrected the old Thambar-M 90mm f2.2 lens. A classic lens from the 1930s that is known for its extremely soft and blurry images and bubbly bokeh wide open. The main difference to the traditional model is that it comes with an M instead of a screw mount. https://bhpho.to/2htvl0O   Fujifilm announced a square format Instax printer. The Share SP-3 SQ prints to the Instax square instant film and can print directly from your Fuji X camera or it can be used as a printer connected to your computer or smartphone. Each print takes about 13 seconds and each battery charge is good for about 160 prints. https://bhpho.to/2Aw2Mnv   Nikon closes its camera and lens factory in China where about 2500 workers are employed. Nikon blames the rise of smartphones for this drastic step. Nikon also seizes their camera sales in Brazil. Mirrorless question of the month: Hi Scott and Marco, I’m a new listener and love your approach to do different topic shows in your feed each month. I am currently a Canon 5D MK III shooter and you guys have convinced me that I can switch to mirrorless cameras without sacrificing IQ. I do mainly portrait and travel photography and I’m wondering if I could get away with buying a less expensive mirrorless camera (i.e. Olympus E-M10 MK II, Fuji X-A3 or Sony a6000) and rather spend extra money on pro-grade lenses? Would I lose AF speed, accuracy, or IQ on those lower end models compared to the higher end ones? Jim from Valdosta, Georgia   We have a PPN Photo Podcast Network group at Flickr (click link) that is open to our listeners and photos taken with all mirrorless camera brands. If you want to join just let us know through the "request invitation" button on the group and drop us a quick line there. We'll add you to the group then. And please ask for the invite via the web browser and not via the Flickr App. The invite process via the app has not been working reliably. You can also submit an image using the Instagram hashtag #WeShootMirrorless   We have picked our monthly featured photographer and image from our Flickr groups. Our monthly We Shoot Mirrorless feature photo and photographer of the month is: Evan Gearing "Sand Falls” (click here) Please support our show by using our B&H affiliate link (click here) that will not cost you a penny more than when you are buying at B&H without our link. And the more this link will be used to buy at B&H, the more giveaways we’ll be able to give back to our listeners through B&H. It really is a “win-win” situation :)   And please share this podcast with your friends and subscribe via iTunes. We would also love to get your feedback. Is there anything that you want us to cover on the show in the future? And we would appreciate if you could take a short moment to rate or post a quick review about our shows on iTunes.   For more information on Scott Bourne follow him on Twitter: @ScottBourne For more information on Marco Larousse follow him on Twitter: @HamburgCam   About this show: On the monthly #WeShootMirrorless episode of the “PPN - Photo Podcast Network” show, Scott and Marco will discuss news from the mirrorless camera world related to innovations, trends, gear and accessories. And they will introduce mirrorless camera brands by interviewing the respective managers of those manufacturers. They will also invite pro photographers who make their living working with mirrorless cameras to share some tips and tricks on their workflow.

In this episode, your three hosts tackle a topic that cuts close to the bone with today's state of photography and social media. Can there be too many gorgeous photos out there? If so, what does one need to do to stand apart from the crowd? It's a serious topic and one that we're thrilled to have Nicole weigh in on. The next topic comes hot on the heels of the 2017 PhotoPlus Expo in New York City. New York City affords a photographer many opportunities, including the annual gathering of photo professionals at the PDN PhotoPlus International Conference + Expo. Founded in 1983, it is the largest photography and imaging event in North America and features seminars, master classes, portfolio reviews, and a convention center filled with the latest cameras, lenses, and accessories from the major manufacturers and the not-so-major manufacturers. It is at the latter at whom we aimed our microphones as we wandered around the Expo floor. It’s certainly beneficial to handle new cameras and test lenses, but at events like these, speaking with the functionaries from Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc. rarely elicits candid answers or information you can’t already find on a press release, so we decided to skip the big booths and concentrate on the vendors from smaller manufacturers to find out what they are bringing to market. We spoke with representatives of long-established firms like Beseler, Fotodiox, Denny Manufacturing, and Platypod to hear what’s new in their catalogs, and we also spoke with newer brands and services such as My Case Builder, Foto Op, COOPH and Film Toaster to better understand their new ideas and products. This week, we're slowing it down a bit & just hanging out with your lovely PhotoSpark hosts!! We have all had some crazy things going on in our lives, both personal and business, and we figured we'd take some time to check in & chit chat about what's been going on with each of us lately. So we hope you enjoy these PhotoSpark host updates! So... what have we been up to?? Ashley DuChene Ashley recently attended her second Coast to Coast Yelp event at Yelp Headquarters in San Francisco! This time was even cooler than the first though, because she was a part of the advisor alliance for the event. This meant she had the chance to give a 40 minute presentation about how to get more Yelp reviews. She was a little nervous at first, but she totally rocked it (we all knew she would)! She had to do her speech three separate times, in front of different audiences. She also attended a women's breakfast, which allowed her to connect with other women business owners (which we totally love) and share stories about the struggles of owning a business, taking care of a family, dealing with competition, and other relevant topics. Ashley also got a chance to sit down with the CEO of Yelp with the rest of the advisor alliance and share her feelings on what our industry thinks Yelp needs to know, which is SUCH an awesome opportunity! [line] Kate Mills Kate has definitely been busy these days. Her son Grayson is 3 months old & she's working on that ever-important family/work/self-care balancing act. If you remember from past episodes, Kate's a bit of a high volume photographer. Her busiest month is usually September (she pushes clients to get their holiday photos done early!) but this month September was part of her short maternity leave, so she's been working a LOT these past couple months to fit everyone in. She took on a little more than she meant to (it's just so hard to turn down money & past clients!), but is finding that the hardest part of this busy season isn't leaving the house to do shoots because she's only gone for a couple hours at a time, but rather trying to get everything done "behind the scenes." It's tough to answer emails & edit photos when baby knows she's home. She feels a little bit like she rushed through her maternity leave, so she's actually going to take all of January off as well & is looking forward to a little time "off" to enjoy her little guy! [line] Julie Ferneau Julie just got back from an AMAZING trip to New York. She, her boyfriend Luis, and her pup Bella took off for 3 weeks! They attended Photo Plus Expo... and Julie got a PRESS PASS for being part of PhotoSpark! This was a super cool moment for all of us because how freaking rad is that?! We're legit media, people! So exciting. Julie's favorite part of the expo was finding a new USB company (stay tuned for images & info!). She also had the chance to do some photoshoots while she was on vacation. Remember Megan Brown's episode about Two Bright Lights? Julie got to do a photoshoot with Meghan on the Brooklyn Bridge! She also took Julie to the Two Bright Lights/The Knot offices! She said their offices were AMAZING. The only downside of Julie's trip is that she didn't have great internet access, so she didn't get to work as much as she planned... which means she now faces a HUGE to-do list! Well, we hope you enjoyed our PhotoSpark host updates! We're excited for the holidays & ready to tackle 2017 & bring you guys even more awesome guests & great content! Dave didn't want to hear what I had to say. He struck up a conversation at the PhotoPlus Expo that ended with him asking me which camera he should buy. "How much do you want to spend?" I asked. "Maybe a few hundred dollars," he responded. "You need to move a decimal point over. For what you just told me about yourself Dave, you should plan to spend at least $2,000." His mouth almost hit the floor. That's not what he wanted to hear. In many instances, I might tell you that you don't need the most expensive camera to create great photos. But not in all instances. There are times when you really should plan to buy the more expensive camera. Here's why and when.

She has over 2 million followers on social media; with over 11 billion views of her photographic work. She is a Professional Fujifilm-X Photographer and has been featured in Talks at Google, Photo Plus Expo and on Stuck in Customs, TWiP, Macphun Software, Forbes.com, The Grid, Rick Sammon’s DPE Podcast. Karen lives in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. You can find her at Karenhutton.com.It's hard to pinpoint the exact topic of our conversation, because we talked about so many things, but I think the central theme of it was the many ways of finding one's voice through art and of discovering one's true self by traveling.Somehow, we also found the time to explore more geeky topics, like photo equipment, software, the Internet and social media, so there's a little bit of everything for everyone in this interview. Between the two programs, most of my needs were met. Or so I thought. In an idle moment at the show, I mentioned to Art that I will need to change to LightRoom since Apple announced it would no longer support Aperture. The lesson I got on LightRoom and all the other major photography software options was so extensive that I thought he should share it with you. Many photography-related companies attend to show off new camera gear and accessories and so much more. It's a great event to attend to take seminars, meet other photographers, play with new stuff and just recharge your photographic juices. Antonio traveled the show floor and found some neat gadgets to share from companies you probably haven't heard of. In his field report (his first for this podcast), he interviews the folks at Beastgrip, iBlazr and MIOPS. Beastgrip makes a cage/grip for your smartphone, allowing you to attach a myriad of accessories which increases the photographic functionality of your smartphone. iBlazr makes a small, nifty Bluetooth-enabled flash also for your smartphone, or DSLR. MIOPS created a remote trigger for your camera that can be activated by lightning, sound, or even a laser beam.
