Then we move on to Anora (2024). Finally we review Emilia Perez (2024).The Last Showgirl is a 2024 American drama film directed by Gia Coppola and written by Kate Gersten. It stars Pamela Anderson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Billie Lourd, Dave Bautista, Brenda Song, and Kiernan Shipka. Its plot focuses on a middle-aged Las Vegas showgirl who is faced with an uncertain future after learning that the revue she has performed in for three decades is scheduled to close. The screenplay was adapted by Gersten from her own play, Body of Work, which she based on her visits to the Jubilee! show shortly before its closure in 2016.The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2024, and was released in the United States on January 10, 2025. It received generally positive reviews from critics, with Anderson's performance garnering critical praise. The film received two nominations at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for Anderson and Best Original Song for "Beautiful That Way". It also received two nominations at the 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for Anderson and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for Curtis.Anora is a 2024 American comedy-drama film written, directed, and edited by Sean Baker. It follows the beleaguered marriage between Anora (Mikey Madison), a young sex worker, and Vanya Zakharov (Mark Eydelshteyn), the son of a Russian oligarch. The supporting cast includes Yura Borisov, Karren Karagulian, Vache Tovmasyan, and Aleksei Serebryakov.Anora premiered on May 21, 2024, at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d'Or and received critical acclaim. It grossed $32.5 million worldwide on a $6 million budget, becoming Baker's highest-grossing film.Emilia Pérez is a 2024 Spanish-language musical comedy crime film written and directed by Jacques Audiard. A French production adapted from Audiard's opera libretto, which was loosely based on Boris Razon's 2018 novel Écoute, the film stars Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, Mark Ivanir, and Édgar Ramírez. The story follows a Mexican cartel leader (Gascón) who enlists a lawyer (Saldaña) to help facilitate their transition into a woman to escape their criminal life. Featuring original songs by Camille, a score by Clément Ducol, and choreography by Damien Jalet, the film was shot in Île-de-France from May to July 2023.Premiering at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, Emilia Pérez received international acclaim for its lead performances, direction, themes, and musical score, winning the Jury Prize and Best Actress award for its female ensemble. However, the film polarized audiences, with criticism in Mexico for cultural misrepresentation, stereotypes, and poorly executed Spanish dialogue, while some LGBTQ groups objected to its portrayal of gender transition. Despite this, it made history at the Golden Globes, winning four awards, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and earning Karla Sofía Gascón a nomination as the first trans woman in the Best Actress category. Selected as France's submission for Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards, it was also named one of the American Film Institute's top 10 films of 2024, cementing its status as a groundbreaking yet controversial cinematic work.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Acclaimed independent filmmaker Sean Baker (The Florida Project, Tangerine) both wrote and directed this dramedy about a Brooklyn sex worker/exotic dancer named Ani (Mikey Madison) who one night meets a wealthy young Russian named Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn) at her club.  She dances for him and apparently they hit it off SO well that within a few days, they decide to get married in Vegas.  They soon return to Ivan's enormous waterfront mansion to begin married life when suddenly, some unexpected guests (Karren Karagulian, Vache Tovmasyan, Yura Borisov) come calling.  Well not exactly guests....they actually work for Ivan's father who is VERY powerful and none too pleased about his son getting impulsively married like this.  At the request of Ivan's father, they also begin to take steps towards ending this short-lived marriage....and needless to say, Ani has some things to say about that.  And from there, things just get crazier and crazier....Ever since unexpectedly winning the highly prestigious "Palme d'Or" award back in May, this film has received a steady stream of acclaim and additional awards attention to the point where it is now considered one of the front-runners for this year's Oscar race, especially Mikey Madison (Once Upon a Day In Hollywood) who is very likely to win Best Actress at the Oscar's next year for a performance which has many convinced that she is on her way towards becoming a movie star!  Let see if it lives up to the hype...... Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Wiz RECOMMENDS Tangerine I've heard about Tangerine for nearly a decade now. But there's a few things that get mentioned about the film whenever I hear about it: it's about transsexual sex workers and it was shot on three iPhone 5s'. But unless you pay real close attention (and I mean REAL CLOSE ATTENTION) you won't be able to tell. Tangerine takes the seedy, grimy L.A. setting and gives it a vivid, striking color grading. There are scenes with neon, sunlight and even fluorescent lighting that have a vibrancy that contrasts with the ugliness of the area it's shot in. In fact, it feels like the grimier the areas, the more colorful the setting feels. Pay special attention to scenes with back alleys and hotel rooms to see some of the more beautifully shot scenes in the muckiness. As for the story, Sean Baker strikes a relatively good balance in keeping things humorous while also showing the humanity and compassion of the main character Sin-Dee. The simple plot, Sin-Dee wants to confront her pimp boyfriend Chester when she finds out he's cheating on him with a woman, shows the character in both her comedically outrageous ways while also showing her deeper, sensitive side later on. This is helped further by Kitana Kiki Rogriduez' performance as Sin-Dee. For her first (and as of right now only) performance, she strikes a perfect tone on the character that makes you laugh at her while also feeling for her, especially at the end of the film. But I have one sizable gripe for the film: it should have cut some of the characters or time spent on those characters. Alexandria, the person that Sin-Dee finds out what Chester did, could have easily been a character that you only see when it involves Sin-Dee on screen because she really didn't add much more. But the one character that could have easily been cut was Razmik, a cab driver who's attracted to tranny prostitutes, played by Karren Karagulian. Honestly, whether it's his family drama or him trying to pick up a prostitute for a quickie, it really just felt like a complete distraction from what the main plot is. On top of that, with such a sensitive portrayal of Alexandria and Sin-Dee, it felt odd to treat this character who is attracted to these characters as a comedic relief. It leaves this weird juxtaposition of trying to humanize Sin-Dee and Alexandria while making comedy of the fact that Razmik is attracted to them. For this oddity alone, this character could have been severely reduced or cut entirely. It honestly leaves me conflicted with what exactly the filmmaker wants you to feel at the end of the film. That leaves me with giving it a smaller recommendation than I would have liked to give. The sensitive and funny portrayal of the lives of these prostitutes are well done and makes you empathize with their problems and the film is beautifully shot in its minimalist, shaky style. It's just sad that a film feels like it could be trimmed more to hone in its story even in its very slight 90 minute runtime.

Hey everyone, it's time to review one of the most hyped up movies of 2024: Sean Baker's Anora. I think Sean Baker is a very talented filmmaker and ever since Cannes five months ago, Anora has been said by awards pundits to be one of the must-watch films of 2024. Well, they weren't kidding. I'm very curious to see how it catches on with the general audience, being that it is a Palme d'Or winner and VERY rated R but also being funnier than your typical awards fair. Anyways, here is my review of Anora! Anora: Written and Directed by: Sean Baker Produced by: Sean Baker, Alex Coco, Samantha Quan Executive Producers: Glen Basner, Alison Cohen, Ken Meyer, Clay Pecorin, Milan Popelka Cinematography by: Drew Daniels Editing by: Sean Baker Production Design by: Stephen Phelps Costume Design by: Jocelyn Pierce Cast: Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Yura Borisov, Karren Karagulian, Vache Tovmasyan Synopsis: Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch. With the month of June coming to a close, so does the LBGTQ+ theme. Jonathan (@berkreviews) chose Tangerine (2015) directed by Sean Baker and starring Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, Mya Taylor, and Karren Karagulian. Neither he nor Corey (@coreyrstarr) had seen it, but they both loved his 2017 film The Florida Project. Tangerine follows Sin-Dee (Rodriguez) and Alexandra (Taylor) on Christmas Eve as they search for Chester (James Ransone), Sin-Dee's pimp and boyfriend, who may have betrayed her trust. The film starts off a little rocky and hard to watch, but by the end won both, Jonathan and Corey, over.  episode 078 - The Graduate (1967) July brings the theme of Coming of Age movies and Corey has never seen director Mike Nichols' film The Graduate (1967). The film stars Dustin Hoffman as Ben Braddock as he tries to figure out "what's next," after college. He finds himself torn between two relationships one with Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft) and her daughter, Elaine Robinson (Katharine Ross). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

Continuing with the theme for Pride Month of LBGTQ+ movies, Corey (@coreyrstarr) selected Tom Ford's A Single Man (2009). The movie stars Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode, and Nicholas Hoult. Jonathan (@berkreviews) hadn't heard of it prior to Corey's suggestion, but both ended up really enjoying the film. Firth did manage to get an Oscar nomination for his performance and it is clearly well deserved. Next week: Tangerine (2015) Jonathan selected Sean Baker's film, shot on iPhone 5s, Tangerine (2015) for the next episode. It stars Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, Mya Taylor, and Karren Karagulian, and much like Baker's Florida Project its based around some truth. The film had a lot of buzz coming out of Sundance and it's been on Jonathan's radar for some time. It is currently available to stream on Netflix. Merry Christmas and happy holidays, everyone! For this unconventional Yuletide, we bring in our dear friend, actress Alexia Jasmene, to discuss one of Clint's favorite Christmas films - 2015's trans-centric dramedy Tangerine! Directed by Sean Baker (The Florida Project), Tangerine follows trans sex workers Sin-Dee Rella (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) and Alexandra (Mya Taylor) on one unseasonably hot Christmas Eve in West Hollywood. Sin-Dee wants revenge on her cheating boyfriend/pimp Chester (James Ransone), while Alexandra just wants the chance to perform at her favorite bar. Meanwhile, an Armenian cab driver (Karren Karagulian) intersects with their wild, crazy day in unexpected ways. It's a bold, refreshing and wholly original film, both in subject matter and presentation (the whole thing was filmed on an iPhone!), and we think it's well worth some Christmas attention. Take a listen to our episode, and check out our custom cocktail and drinking rules! (Thanks to our sponsor Backblaze as part of the Chicago Podcast Coop!)
