Listen to us as we discuss the 2003 Lost in Translation. If you would like to give us feedback on how were doing follow us at: https://beacons.ai/senornerdpodcast https://www.instagram.com/senornerdpodcast/ @senornerdpod on Twitter Lost in Translation is a 2003 romantic comedy-drama film[note 1] written and directed by Sofia Coppola. Bill Murray stars as Bob Harris, a fading American movie star who is having a midlife crisis when he travels to Tokyo to promote Suntory whisky. There, he befriends another estranged American named Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson), a young woman and recent college graduate. Giovanni Ribisi, Anna Faris, and Fumihiro Hayashi are also featured. The film explores themes of alienation and disconnection against a backdrop of cultural displacement in Japan. It defies mainstream narrative conventions and is atypical in its depiction of romance.[4] Coppola started writing the film after spending time in Tokyo and becoming fond of the city. She began forming a story about two characters experiencing a "romantic melancholy"[5] in the Park Hyatt Tokyo, where she stayed while promoting her first feature film, the 1999 drama The Virgin Suicides. Coppola envisioned Murray playing the role of Bob Harris from the beginning and tried to recruit him for up to a year, relentlessly sending him telephone messages and letters. While Murray eventually agreed to play the part, he did not sign a contract; Coppola spent a quarter of the film's $4 million budget without knowing if he would actually appear for shooting. When Murray finally arrived, Coppola described feelings of significant relief. Principal photography began on September 29, 2002, and lasted 27 days. Coppola kept a flexible schedule during filming with a small crew and minimal equipment. The screenplay was short and Coppola often allowed a significant amount of improvisation during filming. The film's director of photography, Lance Acord, used available light as often as possible, and many Japanese places of business and public areas were used as locations for shooting. After 10 weeks of editing, Coppola sold distribution rights for the United States and Canada to Focus Features, and the company promoted the film by generating positive word of mouth before its theatrical release. Lost in Translation premiered on August 29, 2003, at the Telluride Film Festival, and was distributed to American theatres on September 12, 2003, to major critical and commercial success. Critics praised the performances of Murray and Johansson as well as the writing and direction of Coppola; minor criticism was given to the film's depiction of Japan and Japanese people.[6] At the 76th Academy Awards, Lost in Translation won Coppola Best Original Screenplay, and the film was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director (Coppola), and Best Actor (Murray). Other accolades won include three Golden Globe Awards and three British Academy Film Awards.

These are the final two big indicators as to which actors and films might win big at the upcoming Academy Awards on March 12. Terry Lipshetz is excited for the March 1 return of "The Mandalorian" on Disney+ and shares his thoughts on how Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau can pretty much do no wrong with the Star Wars franchise after a shaky reboot with J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson's films. The show wraps with Miller sharing his thoughts on the upcoming Hulu series from Mel Brooks: "History of the World, Part II." The series is a sequel of sorts to Brooks' 1981 film "History of the World, Part I." Babylon is a 2022 American epic period comedy drama film written and directed by Damien Chazelle. It features an ensemble cast including Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo and Li Jun Li. It chronicles the rise and fall of multiple characters during Hollywood's transition from silent to sound films in the late 1920s. Chazelle began developing the film in July 2019, with Lionsgate as the frontrunner to acquire the project. It was announced that Paramount Pictures had acquired worldwide rights in November 2019. Much of the main cast joined the project between January 2020 and August 2021, and filming took place in Los Angeles from July to October 2021. Babylon premiered at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles on November 14, 2022, and was released in the United States on December 23. The film polarized critics, who generally praised its cinematography, score, production design and lead performances, but were sharply divided on its direction, screenplay, graphic content, and runtime. It was a box-office bomb, grossing over $41 million against a production budget of $78–80 million.[6] The film received five nominations at the 80th Golden Globe Awards (including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, winning Best Original Score), nine nominations at the 28th Critics' Choice Awards (including Best Picture), three nominations at the 76th British Academy Film Awards, and three nominations at the 95th Academy Awards. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popcorn-junkies/message

It's Jane Fonda y'all! Jane stopped by Manny's right before the midterms to talk about this critical election. She knows, as we all know, that we are on the precipice of climate disaster. We are no longer just imagining how the world will look in a disrupted climate; we're seeing and feeling the reality of the climate crisis every single day as we witness and experience wildfires, heat waves, and floods destroying communities. In 2020, the fossil fuel industry poured $139 million into our elections – to politicians of both parties. This money has real consequences. Major solutions are stopped cold, like the Green New Deal, Build Back Better, clean energy investments, and initiatives to end billions in tax subsidies to the fossil fuel industry — all because of politicians backed by Big Oil. It's not too late to change our course. But it won't happen as long as oil, gas, and coal companies maintain their stranglehold on American politics. Earlier this year, she started the Jane Fonda Climate PAC to elect local, state, and federal leaders who will rise to the urgency of this moment and stand up to the fossil fuel industry. The PAC leverages the donations of those who are climate concerned to counter the outsized influence the fossil fuel industry has on our government. Jane wants politicians who support oil and gas to be as afraid for their jobs as we are about the impending climate disaster.About Jane FondaJane Seymour Fonda is a film and television icon, entrepreneur, and activist. Jane has earned two Academy Awards, two British Academy Film Awards, seven Golden Globe Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, the AFI Life Achievement Award, the Golden Lion Honorary Award, the Honorary Palme d'Or, and the Cecil B. DeMille Award. She has starred in dozens of films over 60 years including Barbarella; Klute; The Shoot Horses, Don't They; Coming Home; On Golden Pond; The China Syndrome; 9 to 5; Monster-In-Law; and The Morning After to name only a few. She has been a political activist her entire adult life, involved in multiple anti-war movements, the civil rights movement, in support of the Black Panthers, in the fight for LBGTQ rights, in feminist struggles, and now, in the fight of her life to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change. Jane has been targeted and arrested for her activities throughout her life but remains committed to doing everything she can to fight for justice for all and to live joyfully while doing it.

It stars Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, and Milla Jovovich. Primarily set in the 23rd century, the film's central plot involves the survival of planet Earth, which becomes the responsibility of Korben Dallas (Willis), a taxicab driver and former special forces major, after a young woman (Jovovich) falls into his cab. To accomplish this, Dallas joins forces with her to recover four mystical stones essential for the defence of Earth against the impending attack of a malevolent cosmic entity. Besson started writing the story that was developed as The Fifth Element when he was 16 years old; he was 38 when the film opened in cinemas. Besson wanted to shoot the film in France, but suitable facilities could not be found; filming took place in London and Mauritania instead. He hired comic artists Jean "Moebius" Giraud and Jean-Claude Mézières, whose books inspired parts of the film, for production design. Costume design was by Jean-Paul Gaultier. The Fifth Element received mainly positive reviews, although some critics were highly negative. The film won in categories at the British Academy Film Awards, the César Awards, the Cannes Film Festival, and the Lumières Awards, but also received nominations at the Golden Raspberry and Stinkers Bad Movie Awards. The Fifth Element was a strong financial success, earning more than US$263 million at the box office on a $90 million budget. At the time of its release, it was the most expensive European film ever made, and it remained the highest-grossing French film at the international box office until the release of The Intouchables in 2011.

On the show today... In movie news we've all been waiting for, we've finally been given a first look at the highly anticipated film adaption of the best-selling novel Where the Crawdads Sing, via a Vanity Fair article showing a series of lush photos from the set along with some insider secrets. And filmmaker Jane Campion has been enjoying an extraordinary run with her critically acclaimed movie The Power of the Dog, which is the most Oscar-nominated movie of the year. But when accepting her Critics Choice Award this week she made a comment about Venus and Serena Williams that made headlines and resulted in a difficult conversation. Plus, Rebel Wilson hosted the British Academy Film Awards for the first time this week, and even though she has a legacy of being one of the event's most popular presenters the feedback has been brutal. During the ceremony an image of her flashed across the screens, leading to an unwelcome round of applause, and it's a moment that highlighted the true nature of the entertainment industry. *) US warns China of consequences of helping Russia The White House has warned Beijing of severe "consequences" if it helps Moscow evade sanctions as the Russian offensive in Ukraine widens. "We will not stand by and allow any country to compensate Russia for its losses from the economic sanctions," US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said ahead of talks with Beijing. Russia reportedly asked China for military and economic aid for its assault on Ukraine just hours after Washington's warnings. *) UN urges Russia to stop attacking health facilities Three UN agencies have called for an immediate end to Russian attacks on health care facilities in Ukraine, calling them “an act of unconscionable cruelty”. The UN Children's Fund, the World Health Organization and the UN Population Fund condemned the attacks on patients and health workers in a joint statement. In 24 of the reported Russian attacks, health care facilities were damaged or destroyed, while in five cases, ambulances were hit. A total of 12 people were killed and 34 injured, according to the UN agencies' statement. *) Europe new ‘hotspot' for arms imports Europe has seen the world's biggest rise in arms imports in the past five years, according to a study published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. While arms exports declined globally by 4.6 percent in the 2017-2021 period compared with the preceding five-year period, Europe posted a 19-percent increase. Researchers expect the trend to accelerate following recent rearmament commitments amid the Russian operation in Ukraine. *) Iran condemns Saudi executions Iran has strongly condemned Saudi Arabia's mass execution of convicted criminals, saying the move violates "basic principles of human rights and international law”. In a statement, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said the mass execution of 81 men was carried out "without observing fair judicial processes”. More than half of those executed were Shia Muslims. Tehran's condemnation came hours after Iran temporarily suspended a fifth round of tension-easing talks with Saudi Arabia brokered by Iraq, which were set to resume on Wednesday after a long pause. In this episode, our host Anna Smith makes a foray into an animated comedy featuring a robot apocalypse full of "delicious sight gags, absurd one-liners and deliriously silly set-pieces" - in the words of our guest, Catherine Bray. Computer-animated science fiction film The Mitchells vs The Machines, nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the British Academy Film Awards and at the Oscars this year, it is the first mainstream animated feature that has a queer heroine at its heart. Katie Mitchell is a feisty teen and aspiring filmmaker whose road trip with her quirky, dysfunctional family of outsiders is interrupted by an army of robots who try to capture all of humanity. They are led by evil AI genius PAL, an ‘Alexa' or ‘Siri' equivalent gone rogue, voiced by Olivia Colman. It's a wild ride and a thought-provoking satire on our over-reliance on technology. First up Anna talks to Abbi Jacobson, who does a brilliant job of voicing Katie, our young protagonist. Abbi previously co-created and co-starred in the TV series Broad City. They are joined by the production designer and lead character designer for The Mitchells vs The Machines, Lindsey Olivares. This conversation on Girls On Film is the first time the two co-creators of the character Katie talk to each other about their work. Next up Anna talks to film critic Catherine Bray about her take on the film's fabulous feminist sensibility. The Mitchells vs The Machines is available now on Netflix. This episode celebrates the film CODA, which has been longlisted for seven British Academy Film Awards: for Best Film, Director and Adapted Screenplay, for Leading Actress and Supporting Actor, for Casting, and for Sound. The uplifting comedy-drama follows Ruby (Emilia Jones) a 17-year-old CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), who finds herself torn between pursuing a future at music school and her fear of abandoning her family. First, our host Anna speaks to writer-director of CODA, Siân Heder and the film's leading actress Emilia Jones. The pair discuss the reactions they've had to CODA from the deaf community and Siân recalls some of the challenges she overcame making this film. Emilia also reveals to Anna her experience learning multiple skills for this film, including an American accent and learning ASL in nine months. Next, Anna is joined by two incredible women working to raise awareness for Deaf and disabled audiences. They are Charlotte Little, access consultant and film critic, and Teri Devine, Associate Director for Inclusion at the Royal National Institute for the Deaf. As a CODA herself, Teri discusses the relatability of Ruby's character and highlights some of the accurate details in the film that really stuck with her, including the humour of discussing sex through ASL. Being partially blind and deaf herself, Charlotte discusses the ways in which she relates to the film and analyses the lack of deaf access we see in the film through the Rossi family's experiences. Both Teri and Charlotte then discuss CODA through a feminist lens. An audio transcript of this episode is available to read on the below link or on our Patreon page.
