Donald Trump stunned Hollywood with his announcement of a 100% tariff on films produced outside the U.S., framing it as a move to revive domestic production and counter foreign incentives. The industry responded with confusion and concern, warning that such tariffs could sharply raise production costs, reduce the number of films made, and hit moviegoers with higher ticket prices. Plus, the papal conclave is underway in search of the next pope. Masters revisits her interview with Edward Berger about his latest film, Conclave. He also sings the praises of Netflix, which he reveals was the only financier daring enough to pay for his grim German-language war film All Quiet on the Western Front. The film went on to receive four Academy Awards, including Best International Feature Film.

"I'm Still Here" had its world premiere at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival, where it received strong reviews for its true story about a mother (Fernanda Torres) and activist coping with the forced disappearance of her husband, the dissident politician Rubens Paiva (Selton Mello), during the military dictatorship in Brazil. Adapted from Marcelo Rubens Paiva's 2015 memoir of the same name, the script won the Best Screenplay award at Venice and has gone on to receive multiple nominations for Best International Feature Film (it is Brazil's official selection for the Oscar in this category at the 97th Academy Awards) and won Torres the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama. Director Walter Salles (who previously directed Torres's mother, Fernanda Montenegro, who also stars in this film, to an Oscar-nominated performance in "Central Station" in 1998), Torres and Mello were all kind enough to spend some time talking with Ema Sasic and me about their work on the film, which you can listen to below. Just a year after celebrating a Best International Feature Film nomination at the Oscars for The Teachers' Lounge, which marked her first lead role in a feature, Leonie Benesch is back on the awards circuit with a filmmaking feat, Tim Fehlbaum's unique approach to depicting the devastating events at the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics, September 5. The film features a top-tier ensemble that includes Benesch, John Magaro, Peter Sarsgaard, Ben Chaplin and more as the ABC Sports broadcasting team in Munich, a team that must shift from sports reporting to live coverage of the Israeli athletes taken hostage, marking the very first time such an event was covered by a live broadcast. In September 5, the story is told entirely from their perspective, exploring the intricacies of high-tech broadcast capabilities and the responsibilities that come with them, a combination that's become increasingly relevant with each passing day. With September 5 expanding nationwide on January 17th, I got the opportunity to sit down with Benesch for a Collider Ladies Night chat to revisit her journey in film and television thus far, and to dig into the prep work necessary to accurately portray a translator in September 5. A French production adapted from Audiard's opera libretto, which was loosely based on Boris Razon's 2018 novel Écoute, the film stars Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, Mark Ivanir, and Édgar Ramírez. The story follows a Mexican cartel leader (Gascón) who enlists a lawyer (Saldaña) to help facilitate their transition into a woman to escape their criminal life. Featuring original songs by Camille, a score by Clément Ducol, and choreography by Damien Jalet, the film was shot in Île-de-France from May to July 2023.Premiering at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, Emilia Pérez received international acclaim for its lead performances, direction, themes, and musical score, winning the Jury Prize and Best Actress award for its female ensemble. However, the film polarized audiences, with criticism in Mexico for cultural misrepresentation, stereotypes, and poorly executed Spanish dialogue, while some LGBTQ groups objected to its portrayal of gender transition. Despite this, it made history at the Golden Globes, winning four awards, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and earning Karla Sofía Gascón a nomination as the first trans woman in the Best Actress category. Selected as France's submission for Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards, it was also named one of the American Film Institute's top 10 films of 2024, cementing its status as a groundbreaking yet controversial cinematic work.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
Maria Bakalova knows what she's doing when it comes to finding top-tier creative partners in film and television. As a student studying at the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts in Bulgaria, she gravitated toward acclaimed filmmakers Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov, a directing duo she still works with to this day. She met Julian Kostov in 2019 when he shared a casting notice for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, the movie that'd ultimately earn Bakalova an Oscar nomination. Now, Kostov is Bakalova's producing partner. Under their Five Oceans banner they produced Triumph with Grozeva and Valchanov directing. The film was selected as the Bulgarian entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. Next up on Bakalova's list of dream collaborators she's hoping to establish a long-standing creative partnership with? James Gunn. In fact, during her Collider Ladies Night interview, Bakalova noted, “If I have to choose one person that I want to stick with the rest of my life, it will be him.”Bakalova worked with Gunn for the first time on Guardians on the Galaxy Vol. 3 in which she played Cosmo the Space Dog. While Gunn's run with the Marvel Cinematic Universe would come to an end there, his working relationship with Bakalova wouldn't. Gunn made the shift from Marvel to DC, and brought Bakalova along with him. He cast her as Princess Ilana Rostovic in his adult animated series, Creature Commandos, the project that'd kick off the new DC Universe. At the start of the show, Task Force M is brought in to protect the Princess and the nation of Pokolistan from Circe (voiced by Anya Chalotra) and the Sons of Themyscira. However, as the season progresses, those involved start to question who they're protecting the Princess from - and if she needs protecting at all. With all seven episodes of Creature Commandos Season 1 now available to stream on Max, Bakalova joined me for a Collider Ladies Night conversation to revisit her journey to the DC animated series, and to share her take on what goes down during the finale episode of the season. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

How does the film fit in the pantheon of Holocaust films? Is it a Holocaust film? How well does it deal with its obvious subject matter: the banality of evil? Is the film neutral and detached or preachy, condescending, moralising? What to make of the commentary around the film, including director Jonathan Glazer's statements? Yes, the "-heimer" half of the "Barbenheimer" conglomerate tallied its share of gold during the recent Oscars broadcast. But the also-rans and near-misses had their night as well. On this week's show, Dan Webster, Nathan Weinbender, and Mary Pat Treuthart discuss a pair of films that were at least mentioned during the broadcast. One, “20 Days in Mariupol,” was named Best Documentary Feature, while the other, “Io Capitano,” was one of the nominees for Best International Feature Film.
'The Zone of Interest' is a Holocaust drama about a Nazi commandant's family living next to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Though the death that surrounds this idyllic home is not shown, frequent reminders of the atrocities juxtaposed with the family's cold demeanor make for a squeamish one hour and 45 minutes. “The Zone of Interest” carries a 93 on Rotten Tomatoes with an audience score of 78. It is nominated for five Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director - Jonathan Glazer, Best Adapted Screenplay - Jonathan Glazer, Best International Feature Film, Best Sound

This week we're excited to present a conversation with About Dry Grasses director Nuri Bilge Ceylan. An NYFF61 Main Slate selection, About Dry Grasses opens at FLC next Friday, February 23rd. Get tickets at filmlinc.org/grasses. In a village nestled within the wintry landscape of the East Anatolia region of Turkey, an art teacher named Samet (Deniz Celiloglu) is struggling through what he hopes to be his final year at an elementary school. Already tiring of the unforgiving environment, where he has been assigned by the government's public education system, Samet is further disillusioned and frustrated after a young girl in his class, Sevim, appears to accuse him of inappropriate behavior. The only light on the horizon for Samet is his growing friendship with—and clear attraction to—a teacher from a nearby school, Nuray (Merve Dizdar), a sharp, politically engaged woman unafraid to put the self-involved Samet in his place for his general apathy and narcissism. Turkey's official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 2024 Academy Awards, the latest deeply philosophical drama from Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, NYFF49) is a work of elegant, novelistic filmmaking, rigorously unpacking questions of belief versus action, the tangible versus the enigmatic, and who we wish to be versus how we live. A centerpiece conversation between Samet and Nuray—capped off by a provocative metacinematic flourish—ranks with Ceylan's greatest sequences, and Dizdar, who won the Best Actress prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival, commands every second she's on screen. A Sideshow/Janus Films release. This conversation was moderated by NYFF Advisor Violeta Bava.
"Perfect Days" had its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the festival's Best Actor prize for Japanese star Kōji Yakusho. It would go on to be selected by Japan as their entry for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards and would eventually receive the Oscar nomination. As the film expanded to more theaters, Academy Award-nominated director and co-writer Wim Wenders and Yakusho sat with us to discuss their experiences working on the movie. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from NEON and is up for your consideration for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards. Thank you, and enjoy! Wim Wenders' new film PERFECT DAYS is nominated for Best International Feature Film at this year's 96th Academy Awards — the first Japanese Oscar submission not directed by a Japanese filmmaker. The film follows Hirayama, a toilet cleaner with a passion for music, books, and a fondness for photographing trees. Despite his structured life, his past is gradually revealed through a series of unexpected encounters. Today, Larry sits down with the director to talk about the project and his filmmaking process.
This week we're excited to present a conversation with director Trân Anh Hùng to discuss the NYFF61 Spotlight selection, THE TASTE OF THINGS, opening at Film at Lincoln Center on February 9th. The director will appear in person at select screenings opening weekend as well as for a sneak preview on Thursday, Feb. 8. Get tickets at filmlinc.org/taste. Destined to be remembered as one of the great films about the meaning, texture, and experience of food, this sumptuous, exceptionally well-crafted work, set in late 19th-century France, stars Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel (married, decades ago, in real life) as Eugénie, a cook, and Dodin, the gourmet chef she has been working with for 20 years. As they reach middle age, they can no longer deny their mutual romantic feelings, which have so long been concentrated in their passionate professionalism. This simple narrative—based upon Marcel Rouff's 1924 novel LA PASSION DE DODIN-BOUFFANT, GOURMET—sets the table for a sublime, sense-heightening exploration of pleasure, in which the play of sunlight across a late-afternoon kitchen is as meaningful as the image of a perfectly poached pear or the crisp of a buoyant vol-au-vent. Director Trân Anh Hùng won the Best Director prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival for his bravura, scrupulously deployed feat of epicurean cinema. France's official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 2024 Academy Awards. An IFC Films release.
For this week's second podcast review, I am joined by Josh Parham, Dan Bayer & Tom O'Brien. What do we think of the direction from Glazer, how he adapted the 2014 Martin Amis novel of the same name, the film's themes, its performances, cinematography, and sound work? Tune in as we discuss these elements, its awards season chances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on...
