Tune in as the program keeps the holiday season rolling onward for the second week of December! This time around, filmmaker friend Robyn Zabukovec (https://twitter.com/thefinalgirly?s=21) hops back into her guest seat for a breakdown of Better Watch Out, the 2016 Christmas horror-comedy that follows a 17-year-old babysitter and a couple adolescent boys as they try to fend off a home invasion during Christmastime. An arachnophobic actor summoning up the guts to work with real huntsman spiders on set, a PSA against drunk driving, and a thematic correlation that this movie may share with Adventure Time comprise some of the talking points for this episode. Directed by Chris Peckover, Better Watch Out stars Olivia DeJonge, Levi Miller, Ed Oxenbould, Aleks Mikic, Dacre Montgomery, Virginia Madsen, and Patrick Warburton. After hearing so much about what this book means to fans - particularly young girls - Brenna and Joe are surprised to discover that it has not aged with. Blame the current pandemic, but a story that prioritizes individuality above all else doesn't quite the same way in a society that refuses to even wear a mask for the greater good. There's also the strange critique of communism/totalitarianism that is also an unabashed ode to Christianity that doesn't quite sit well. Thankfully we can see why Meg Murry is a friend to all smart, outsider girls (even if her last name is misspelled. Lol). The film doesn't fare too much better. Joe wonders if the issue is screenwriter Jennifer Lee's background in animation, while Brenna takes issue with the tired fan-service and janky FX. But we like the diverse casting, practical set design, costumes and make-up. It's all a big toss-up!Wanna connect with the show? Is it really the most wonderful time of the year? In this Christmas episode of Chick Flicks, Bridget and McKenzie discuss two horror movies set at Christmastime: Gremlins and Better Watch Out. Directed by Joe Dante in 1984, Gremlins stars Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, and legions of pseudo-furbies. Is this movie racist? We think yes! Directed by Chris Peckover, Better Watch Out was released in 2016 and stars Olivia DeJonge and Levi Miller. Does this film fall into the very toxic cliches it was trying to avoid? Maybe! The Filmlosophers, Eddie Villanueva, Chad Riley and Spencer Williams, journey across the multiverse with this week's review of A Wrinkle in Time (2018), the first child-focused feature film from acclaimed director Ava DuVernay. Starring Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and newcomers Storm Reid, Levi Miller and Deric McCabe, the film is a live-action adaptation of the popular children's novel of the same name. While much of the underlying storyline of the film remains faithful to the source material, a number of elements have been updated and reinterpreted for a modern audience. In movie news, we discuss the Tomb Raider (2018) reboot starring Alicia Vikander.
We’re going to review A WRINKLE IN TIME, which opened this weekend to so-so reviews and $33 million at the box office, coming in second to BLACK PANTHER, which continues its box office domination. Directed by Ana DuVernay (who also directed the documentary THE 13TH and SELMA), and based on the beloved book by Madeleine L’Engle. The movie stars Storm Reid as Megan Murry, a middle school student whose brilliant scientist father (played by Chris Pine) has disappeared while working on a way to travel through the universe. This is not a spoiler, but four years after his disappearance, Megan, her younger brother Charles Wallace (played by Deric McCabe) and her friend Calvin (played by Levi Miller) must search the galaxy for him before something called The It (not to be confused with with Pennywise IT) destroys the universe with its negativity. Luckily, they have the help of three, ummm, beings to help them on their adventure: Mrs. Whatsit (played Reese Witherspoon), Mrs. Who (played by Mindy Kaling) and the god-like Mrs. Which (played by god-like Oprah). Disney has made another adaptation of the classic children's book "A Wrinkle in Time" but will it please the long-time fans of the story? In this episode of the podcast, Andy Farnsworth, Tysen Webb and long-time "Wrinkle" fan and KSL Digital Content specialist Becky Bruce have a deep dive discussion WITH SPOILERS about the new movie, based on the 1962 book written by Madeline L'Engle which still has many loyal fans, 50+ years later. They discuss expectations that fans of the book may have going into the movie, as well as break down many of the changes made from the written page to the big screen by Academy Award-nominated director Ava Duvernay--including missing characters and locations, as well as tweaks to the plot and alterations to a few characters' personalities, some of which Andy & Becky were good with, and some they were not. They even take a quick look Disney's 2003 direct-to-DVD movie version of "A Wrinkle in Time" that starred Alfre Woodard. Disney's "A Wrinkle in Time" (2018) stars Storm Reid, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Deric McCabe, Levi Miller, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Pena & Oprah Winfrey. This podcast is available in video form on iTunes and the podcast app. If you HAVEN'T seen the movie, please download and watch or listen to our SPOILER-FREE review of "A Wrinkle in Time" on our show page!
Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business, the holliest, jolliest, and most horrifyingly unfunny podcast out there. We have one awesome episode in store for you guys. On this episode we’re discussing two films involving the horror that is Christmastime: 1980’s Christmas Evil and 2017’s Better Watch Out. First and foremost we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screenprinting company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a tshirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or coozy. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Thanks! We begin by talking about what horror related things we had done lately. Liam discusses revisiting some Asian horror films (2LDK & Suicide Club) and why he was not a fan of them upon their initial release due to the glut of Asian horror films in the U.S. at the time. Justin then discusses watching The Lure which Liam also watched. Justin discusses seeing The Shape Of Water and how it impacted him, as well as watching the film Sam Was Here, which is currently available to stream on Shudder. Liam briefly talks about seeing Creep 2, and Justin talks about seeing Mayhem and A Ghost Story. Liam briefly touches upon seeing Personal Shopper. Up first is 1980’s Christmas Evil. Justin opens up the discussion with the apparently heretical to Liam opinion that this film is better than Black Christmas. Liam then admits he went into this episode prepared to yell at Justin for not liking it. We then talk about how despite the punny title, the film is not a slasher unlike most Christmas themed horror films. We give a summation of the film, discussing some of the underlying themes of the film (class warfare, socialism, the lingering effects of childhood trauma, the secrets of the family). We talk about the strange culture surrounding the perception of Santa Claus in America, in that Santa is perceived as benevolent despite doing things that, if anyone else did, would be considered creepy and weird and criminal. The theme of injustice in the world and how the film deals with it is examined, as is the ‘80s theme of greed and excess. The theme of the movie being driven by class concerns and justice as opposed to the typical ‘80s slasher film being somewhat puritanical and overly movie is talked about at length. Liam proposes that the films central argument is that Santa Claus, as a phenomenon, is more befitting for the lower class. Liam also talks about the theological implications of the film i.e. the rich only attending church on Christmas out of a sense of duty as opposed to actually wanting to better the world. Next is 2017’s Better Watch Out. We open up by giving a brief summation of the film and noting that the film does not rely upon Christmas for it’s plot; it could literally take place at any point in the year. The plot twist of the movie is discussed and some of the themes are examined, namely toxic masculinity and male privilege. There is a somewhat spirited debate on actor Levi Miller’s performance as the antagonist; Justin is not a fan while Liam is. Liam argues that Miller’s character is less a pretend badass and more a “Richard Spencer” style jerkoff, someone who is ‘self important and smart’, while Justin argues that Miller’s performances fails to elicit any real sense of menace or villainy and is instead flat and unmoving. Liam argues that all of Miller’s pretense is simply an exercise in power in that he was planning to kill everyone else the whole time no matter what happened. Justin talks about despite his misgivings on Miller’s performance he found the ending extremely satisfying. Justin also discusses what he perceived as a clash of two different portrayals of Miller’s character; he is either a petulant child throwing a fit at things not working out for him or he is a calm an...

Pan /pan/: verb 1. (informal) To criticize (someone or something) severely. I don’t care if your movie is about a flying boy. When you name your movie Pan you’re pretty much inviting derision. When you make a crappy movie about a flying boy… well, even more so. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We've all heard of Peter Pan and Steve Jobs and there have been plenty of movies about them both. Do we need two more? Rafer and Kristen weigh in with their verdict on the new Danny Boyle / Aaron Sorkin biopic "Steve Jobs," starring Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen, and Jeff Daniels. They also bestow their date rating on "Pan," starring Levi Miller, Hugh Jackman, and Rooney Mara. After the break, Rafer and Kristen put on their Sweatpants, for a Speed Date. The challenge: review six movies, now available online or on-demand, in six minutes. They include: Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine Finders Keepers Prophet's Prey St. Laurent Monkey Kingdom Cop Car And, as usual, there's Trivia!
This week sees the Empire Podcast booth transported to Neverland, with not one, not two, but five interviews for family adventure, Pan. Joining us for this pod special is the one-and-only Hugh Jackman, Garrett Hedlund, Rooney Mara, newcomer Levi Miller and director Joe Wright.
Pan 12-year-old orphan Peter is spirited away to the magical world of Neverland, where he finds both fun and dangers, and ultimately discovers his destiny -- to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan. Steve Jobs It’s fitting, I suppose, that a movie about the complicated man behind Apple be complicated as well and, in that sense, this adventurous Danny Boyle/Aaron Sorkin spin succeeds. But, is that dazzle enough? Using an unconventional and certainly theatrical conceit, Sorkin plots his story in three distinct acts, each set as Jobs is to unveil a revolutionary new product. The backstage dramas reveal his difficult relationships with his co-workers and family through the years and it’s a nifty trick.
