It's been a while since true crime writer Ellison Oswalt had a bestseller, and the strain is starting to show on Ellison, his wife Tracy, and their kids Trevor and Ashley.  Local law enforcement isn't keen on him, either, as his last few books didn't cast them in too fond a light. So Ellison and his family take up residence in a modest Pennsylvania ranch house with something of a history – something we learn when we watch as a family is lynched in the house's back yard.  Unfortunately, this may be his last chance at the big time, so Ellison neglects to inform Tracy of this, and when things start going bump in the night, and the home movies left behind reveal ominous clues about a killer's identity, Ellison finds himself turning from the hunter to the hunted.  A helpful deputy steps in to assist, as well as a professor of the occult, but by the time they reveal their own information, the situation has devolved from strange… to sinister. This week, Travolta returns to the fold.... in a good movie this time?! Nathan and Clint break down two tales of violence and revenge, both throwbacks in their own way: one to the spaghetti Westerns of the '60s and '70s, the other to, I guess, Deadfall? First up is Arsenal, a chintzy DTV Cage vehicle with a twist: this time, apropos of nothing, he's reprising his over-the-top role as mustachioed drug kingpin Eddie King from his brother Christopher Coppola's chintzy 1993 thriller Deadfall. Once again, he's paired with a bland lead (Adrian Grenier, whose face makes you always wonder whether the movie you're watching is a fake Vincent Chase joint) in a disjointed, overly-stylized tale of brothers pitted against each other in a battle for their own souls. But this time, with a lot more snot-nosed Cage weeping every single line in a Tony Clifton wig.  Fret not, though, for sunrise is just over the horizon in Ti West's slick, darkly funny Western pastiche In a Valley of Violence. Taking the same arch approach he takes to horror homages like House of the Devil and X, West follows a lonely man (Ethan Hawke) running from a violent past with little but his trusty pup by his side. But when tragedy befalls him (two guesses as to what happens to that dog), Hawke goes full Western John Wick on the cocky gunslinger failson (James Ransone) of the eminently pragmatic town marshal (John Travolta, mutton-chopped and delightful).  Pledge to our Patreon at patreon.com/travoltacage Follow us on Twitter @travoltacage Email us questions at travoltacagepod@gmail.com Podcast theme by Jon Biegen Podcast logo by Felipe Sobreiro

The stress of preparing to move is bad enough, so I guess that it's nice to know the history of the house that you're moving into. Unless it happens to be a murder house. And if it does, you might think that getting out of there as quickly as possible is the best plan. Or is it?The chances of finding a box of Super 8 snuff films in the attic of our new house is probably pretty unlikely. And we don't even have children, so we're probably safe, even if we watched the snuff! Unless this whole Bughuul thing works on cats, too. Then we're in big trouble. Getting mixed up with something known as the "eater of children" would be bad enough, but I would definitely not want the "eater of cats" moving in with us.Right in the middle of our move, things just got a whole lot more Sinister (2012)!

On a whim we decided to see The Black Phone, the new Blumhouse horror movie directed by Scott Derrickson and adapted from a short story by Joe Hill (Stephen King's son). Ethan Hawke plays a child abductor nicknamed "The Grabber" in 1978 suburban Denver. It also stars Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and James Ransone. We got all hot and bothered about the film and the theatrical experience in the Burbank 6, in this very hawt take!

So it's a confirmed fact that The Black Phone (2022) is *not* scarier than Top Gun: Maverick, but it might be a contender for most depressing movie of the year. On this week's Spooky Tuesday, we're venturing back out to the theater for a film that features Ethan Hawke as a makeup-loving magician, child stars saying copious curse words, and a group of youths chanting “Bruce! Bruce! Bruce!” à la Matilda. A new release that throws it back to the ‘70s, this Joe Hill adaptation is helping us push our Ghost Whisperer/Mediator series agenda.Resources:https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2022/06/the-black-phone-joe-hill https://www.creativescreenwriting.com/reacting-to-childhood-trauma-robert-cargill-on-the-black-phone/

It's hard to believe that the now classic horror flick SINISTER (2012) is over a decade old.  The film put together director and co-screenwriter Scott Derrickson, co-screenwriter C. Robert Cargill, and actors Ethan Hawke and James Ransone together for what would not be the only time.  Now in 2022, their new film has come out and has received good reviews.  The movie, THE BLACK PHONE (2022), based off a short story by Joe Hill, was released to theaters in late June, 2022. Finn and his younger sister Gwen live with their widower father.  For a year, their home town outside Denver, Colorado has been plagued by a child abductor given the name “The Grabber” by the press.  When Finn's friend disappears, people fear the worse.  Soon, the town is in panic as children keep disappearing to never return. The movie has received fine reviews, including a four out of four star from the Roger Ebert website.  Scott Derrickson left doing the latest Dr. Strange film to pull this remarkably solid horror film together.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this period piece (that takes place in 1978) and gives their thoughts.

Hello and welcome to another episode of the B Bin! First and foremost I wanted to apologize for the audio on today's episode, this was recorded a few months ago and we left the AC on. That is our bad for sure but we hope you still enjoy it. On today's episode we discuss the 2012 Horror film, Sinister. Sinister was written and directed by Scott Derrickson and stars Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, James Ransone, Fred Thompson, and Vincent D'Onofrio. We saw that this movie was said to be the scariest movie of all time, but that is a load of shit. Sinister follows a true crime writer trying to reestablish his success as he moves his family into a house where the previous families were murdered in peculiar ways. Things start getting weird when he finds old movies depicting the killings of families in the attic and before he knows what is going on its already too late for the writer.  Most here at the B-Bin, besides Brandon, really liked the film. We loved the eerie home movies but thought the movie would have been much better without the visual images of Bughuul. We discuss what our favorite and least favorite home movies were, how to perfectly cook a human body, what we would do if we were a ghost living in the house and we draw comparisons to Michael Jackson and Bughuul. If you guys haven't already, please check us out on Facebook and Instagram @bbinhorror, you can also send us an email at bbinhorror@gmail.com We hope you enjoy this episode!

This week we are heading up in the loft to learn about Dr Winston O. Boogie, impossible corridors and Mark foxes John with a game of Sinister or Minister. ---Sinister is a 2012 supernatural horror film directed and co-written by Scott Derrickson. The film stars Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, James Ransone, Fred Thompson, and Vincent D'Onofrio. The plot revolves around true-crime writer Ellison Oswalt (Hawke) whose discovery of Super 8 home movies depicting grisly murders found in the attic of his new house puts his family in danger.Sinister was inspired by a nightmare co-writer C. Robert Cargill had after watching the 2002 film The Ring.  Principal photography on Sinister began in Autumn of 2011 with a production budget of $3 million. To add the authenticity of old home movies and snuff films, the Super 8 segments were shot on actual Super 8 cameras and film stock. The film was a co-production between the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The film premiered at the SXSW festival. It was released in the United States on October 12, 2012, and in the UK on October 5, 2012. Sinister received positive reviews, praising the acting, direction, music, cinematography, and atmosphere, but received some criticism for its use of jump scares (most notably the lawnmower scene) and horror clichés. The film was a box office success, grossing $87.7 million against its budget of $3 million.  The film's financial success spawned a sequel, Sinister 2, released in the United States on August 21, 2015.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/100things)

MOVIE DISCUSSION: Are you enjoying your October? I know I am! It’s been nice watching the leaves change their color, have a chilly breeze flow through the open windows, and eat copious amounts of candy when nobody’s looking. I’ve eaten… just… so many Crunch bars. Last week we had a great time talking with Logan Sharp of The Reformed Gamers about the South Korean zombie film, Train to Busan. This week, we’re comin’ back state-side for Sinister, another fun, accessible, and tame horror flick that we feel fits the spooky-Halloween spirit just right! As we get things started, Carter and I talk about Sinister’s clever pacing and parallels, how we often view our history and hopes with rose-colored glasses, and the dangers of chasing nostalgia rather than focusing on our responsibilities. Following that, we discuss some fun trivia about the conception of Sinister and give a bit of love to film over digital in the movie-making field. We also lament the transition to digital, even if it is cost effective. And lastly, during our spoiler discussion, Carter talks about how easy our temptations can manipulate us, and I posit another message within Sinister’s subtext, while also scratching my head about the resolution of the film. Sinister is Rated R for disturbing violent images and some terror. It features Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, Vincent D'Onofrio, James Ransone, Fred Dalton Thompson, and Clare Foley. Directed by Scott Derrickson. Sinister is currently available on Peacock. Dust Bunnies, we’re not here to tell you what horror movie is definitively the scariest ever; we’re just here to confirm that Sinister (2012) is DEFINITELY up there on the list. But wait, don’t run away! Come join us under the bed with Ethan “Handsome” Hawke and Adult-Eddie from It: Chapter 2 (we love you James Ransone), and maybe bring a few extra flashlights - seriously, this movie is dark in more ways than one. Want to hear us dig really, really deep into the many linear timelines this film presents? Want to see some scary movie tropes turned completely on their heads? Want to feel extremely afraid when the lights are turned off, in your own home, even now…maybe in your 20s? DUH! Grab your blankie (or any stuffed animal will do) and settle in for some relaxing commentary on a most unsettling film.WAYS TO HELP AND DONATE TO BLM: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/ Thank you
