Filmmaker Marco Calvani talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about “High Tide” his feature film debut that stars Marco Pigossi (Lourenço) as a Brazilian undocumented immigrant adrift Provincetown in the late summer. The film is about a young man coping after a break up & left adrift in Ptown with his travel visa running out. Lourenço then meets Maurice a Black American & a romance evolves. Though Maurice's comes with a circle of friends he's is also quite aware he's the minority in a predominantly white queer tourist mecca. Pigossi gives a haunting performance steeped in melancholy & raw pain but delivers moments of openness, optimism & joy with an affective portrait of the depths LGBTQ men experience seeking meaningful connections. As the summer season fades & with his unexpected romance with Maurice together the two reconcile the pasts they've left behind & pursue their uncertain futures. The film distributed by Strand Releasing premiered at South by Southwest & was released in NYC earlier this month followed by an expansion to Los Angeles & will begin a run at Waters Edge Cinema in Provincetown & Coolidge Corner Theater in Brookline, MA on Friday November 1st. The stellar cast also includes James Bland as Maurice, Marisa Tomei as Miriam, Bill Irwin as Scott, Sean Mahon as Bob, Mya Taylor as Crystal, Bryan Batt as Todd, Todd Flaherty as Leslie, Karl Gregory as BJ & João Santos as Dimo with a haunting score by Sebastian Plano.  Marco Calvani is an Italian playwright, director, filmmaker, translator & actor. Trained as an actor since he was a teenager Calvani made his debut as a playwright in 2002 with Quasi commissioned by the European Social Forum. Prior to his first feature film High Tide which had its world premiere at SXSW in March 2024 he wrote & directed the short film The View from Up Here starring Melissa Leo & Leïla Bekhti based on his eponymous play originally commissioned by The Actors Studio & directed by Estelle Parsons. As of 2020 Marco  is in a relationship with Brazilian actor Marco Pigossi. LISTEN: 600+ LGBTQ Chats @OUTTAKE VOICES

Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

Don't think just because Sean Baker did some shit with three iPhone 5s and Final Cut that you can just whip out your phone and make something this good because you can't. Maybe some of you could, but most of you? No way. MOVIES ARE GAY this month and we keep on truckin' with a crafty and clever tale of two transgender sex workers on the streets of West Los Angeles. Hilarious and human, movies don't often feel this real. Nor should they for the most part, but when they do feel real it can be rewarding. Of course we're talking about Sean Baker's 2015 film “Tangerine” starring Katana Kiki Rodriguez, Mya Taylor and Karren Karagulian. Check this shit out if you haven't, it's genuinely funny and don't fall in love with your pimp for God's sake. It's another episode of The Awkward Goodbye podcast, with myself and James, where we have our usual staple in "Actor In a Hat"; taking a literal hat, putting actors names in said hat, pulling said names out of aforementioned hat and discussing them as much as we can. This go-round, we have two Oscar-winners in Matt Damon and Brie Larson and admittedly, James and I recorded this one a while ago so I'll touch up on some notes below: - Colin Firth, not Colin Farrell, starred in Gambit, that was written by the Coen Brothers. - I finally saw Jason Bourne since we recorded this, it's not bad! Same with Contagion, it's not bad! - one of James' cats sits on my phone while recording this, great producing work here (srsly). - the leads for Sean Baker's Tangerine are Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor (shouts to James Ransone as well). - I was badly thinking of Joe Swanberg being the director of Greenberg, instead of Noah Baumbach. - there's an outdated breakdown of Bohemian Rhapsody in here, just before we got into the thick of awards season last year. Needless to say, Rami Malek did end up winning Best Actor and the film won 4 out of the 5 Oscars it was nominated for. The less said about this, the better probably. - Amy Adams was eventually nominated for Vice in Best Supporting Actress. Give it a listen, and hopefully we'll have another episode up in a more timely matter for you all!

With the month of June coming to a close, so does the LBGTQ+ theme. Jonathan (@berkreviews) chose Tangerine (2015) directed by Sean Baker and starring Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, Mya Taylor, and Karren Karagulian. Neither he nor Corey (@coreyrstarr) had seen it, but they both loved his 2017 film The Florida Project. Tangerine follows Sin-Dee (Rodriguez) and Alexandra (Taylor) on Christmas Eve as they search for Chester (James Ransone), Sin-Dee's pimp and boyfriend, who may have betrayed her trust. The film starts off a little rocky and hard to watch, but by the end won both, Jonathan and Corey, over.  episode 078 - The Graduate (1967) July brings the theme of Coming of Age movies and Corey has never seen director Mike Nichols' film The Graduate (1967). The film stars Dustin Hoffman as Ben Braddock as he tries to figure out "what's next," after college. He finds himself torn between two relationships one with Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft) and her daughter, Elaine Robinson (Katharine Ross). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

Continuing with the theme for Pride Month of LBGTQ+ movies, Corey (@coreyrstarr) selected Tom Ford's A Single Man (2009). Firth did manage to get an Oscar nomination for his performance and it is clearly well deserved. Next week: Tangerine (2015) Jonathan selected Sean Baker's film, shot on iPhone 5s, Tangerine (2015) for the next episode. It stars Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, Mya Taylor, and Karren Karagulian, and much like Baker's Florida Project its based around some truth. The film had a lot of buzz coming out of Sundance and it's been on Jonathan's radar for some time. It is currently available to stream on Netflix. Fun 2 Know Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 27, 2017 127:18

On today's show: Film director Sean Baker and film critic Piers Marchant. First, a very recent conversation I had with filmmaker Sean Baker. I was so taken with Sean Baker's 2015 film TANGERINE, famously and beautifully shot from an Apple iPhone, that I started tracking down his earlier work, four fascinating films, including two brilliantly-executed micro-budget indies, 2004's TAKE OUT set in the world of NYC Chinese food delivery, and 2008's PRINCE OF BROADWAY, about an African immigrant selling knock-off designer bags who is unexpectedly left alone with a baby that might be his son. Baker's 2012 film STARLET centered around a friendship between an elderly widow and a sweet up-and-coming adult film star, played by Muriel Hemingway's daughter, Dree. But it was the 2015 film TANGERINE that was Baker's breakthrough, hitting the zeitgeist right as transgender issues were making big news and following two streetwalkers on a wild and unapologetic 24-hour tour through the Hollywood strip, and featuring incredible performances from first-time actresses Mya Taylor and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez. The pair were later part of the first Academy Award campaigns for openly transgender actresses. Now Baker follows-up TANGERINE with THE FLORIDA PROJECT, a fascinating ramble around the world of budget motels in Kissimmee, Florida. The film is mostly seen from the perspective of six year old Moonee, played by newcomer Brooklyn Prince and through her eyes, the rundown, kitschy motels and gaudy tourist traps seem just as enchanted as Disney's Magic Kingdom one town over. Her mother is played by Bria Vinaite who gives a downright feral performance as Moonee's loving but distracted mom and Willem Defoe exercises his compassionate side as the diplomatic motel manager Bobby. It's a film that vibrates with real life and its episodic quality allows the tightening dynamics of the plot to escape notice until its emotionally-tumultuous finale. It's also a film that captures childhood more vividly than any film in recent history as well as further exploring the themes of work, morality and people on society's fringes that is the hallmark of Baker's ever-more impressive filmography. I was given a chance to talk to Baker just before THE FLORIDA PROJECT screened at the Philadelphia Film Festival and when I saw the schedule I realized I was given 20 minutes just before Baker was due to walk on the festival's red carpet for a Saturday evening featured screening. I found Baker to be completely direct and unpretentious and would have loved to have him on for a more leisurely interview but as it was I was able to squeeze a few more minutes out of him for a half-hour of conversation. We talk about Baker's New Jersey roots, discovering Cassavetes, Ken Loach and the Dardenne Brothers, working with first-time actors, 70s Hollywood film, The Our Gang series, shooting on video and film and knowing how the movie is going to end. After the interview we'll go to an even more recent discussion with film critic Piers Marchant from PHILADELPHIA MAGAZINE and The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Piers and I get into a much more leisurely conversation, discussing Baker and THE FLORIDA PROJECT but also, BLADE RUNNER 2049, The Coen Brothers, George Lucas, the state of modern Hollywood and some of our favorite films of the 2017.
