Twice a year, Whetstone Boys Ranch hosts a father-son retreat here in Mountain View, Missouri. Dads travel from all over the country to spend a weekend with their son. They join other dads who work here, along with our counseling team, for a series of guided activities and adventures designed to get everyone talking - talking about expectations, perspectives, frustrations, hopes, and fears. There were many takeaways from this year's retreat, which was led by Matt Foster and Katie Johnston. There were so many in fact, that we'll have to break this into two pods. The first is called “The Myth of Quality Time”... so let's get going. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/time-to-sharpen/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/time-to-sharpen/support
In this episode, Tracy Rigdon welcomes Casey Raasio and Katie Johnston, the founding members of rebelreaders.org, a Jacksonville-based organization that is making a positive impact in the community. They discuss the mission behind Rebel Readers, their journey of promoting diversity and literacy, and their unique approach of placing challenged, banned, and multicultural literature in little free libraries. *Main Talking Points:* 1. The Birth of Rebel Readers Florida and Rebel Readers Georgia - Casey Raasio and Katie Johnston, both former teachers, joined forces to establish Rebel Readers Florida and its Georgia chapter. - The organization's primary focus is placing challenged, banned, and multicultural books in little free libraries. - They collaborate with Kaylee Weiland, who oversees the Rebel Readers Georgia chapter. 2. The Importance of Little Free Libraries and Diverse Literature - Little Free Libraries have been present in Jacksonville for some time, but Rebel Readers adds a unique twist by curating diverse and multicultural books. - By making these books easily accessible in the community, Rebel Readers aims to promote inclusivity and help people feel seen and welcome. - With declining literacy rates and a diverse population in Jacksonville, the initiative serves as a means to acknowledge and embrace the city's cultural richness. 3. The Story and Mission of Rebel Readers - Casey Raasio and Katie Johnston, both former sixth-grade teachers, bonded over their shared passion for education. - Motivated by the removal of books from Casey's classroom, they sought ways to contribute to the community. - The idea of placing banned, challenged, and multicultural books in little free libraries emerged as a tangible and impactful solution. - With boxes of books always at hand, they take opportunities during everyday activities to drop books in libraries across various locations. 4. Leading by Example and Inspiring Young Readers - Rebel Readers believes in leading by example and inspiring children through adult enthusiasm for reading. - By actively engaging with books and discussing them, adults can motivate children to pick up books and share their enjoyment with others. - The ripple effect of this small-scale initiative has the potential to create a larger impact on promoting literacy and a love for reading. 5. Understanding the Difference Between Banned and Challenged Books - Banned books have already been removed from public access, while challenged books are recommended for removal. - The list of banned and challenged books is extensive, encompassing titles that were once read in schools. - The actions of removing books from classroom libraries by teachers during book banning procedures highlight the urgency of addressing the issue. These show notes provide a comprehensive overview of the podcast episode, "Rebel Readers: Promoting Diversity and Literacy through Little Free Libraries." Casey Raasio and Katie Johnston share their experiences founding Rebel Readers Florida and Rebel Readers Georgia, their mission of placing banned and multicultural books in little free libraries, and the importance of promoting diversity in literature. Through their initiative, they aim to inspire young readers and create a community that celebrates inclusivity and cultural richness. ** Visit the Contrast Project website for a more immersive experience: BLOG Link: : https://bit.ly/Rebel-Readers ** Music Tracks for this Podcast by Alex Grohl on Pixabay ** Feel free to LIKE, SHARE AND COMMENT. Calling all love addicts! Maybe you are having a really hard time letting go of that Mr. Unavailable, or maybe you jump from one relationship to the next chasing the infatuation and the highs and lows. This episode is for you. I'm excited to bring back a client and guest instructor in my group coaching program, Katie Johnston. Katie and I have definitely been through it before with having an addiction to love and Mr. Wrong, and we have a lot to share with you about how to identify if you're a love addict and what you can do about it.We both recently watched the interview that Matthew Perry did with Dianne Sawyer where he discussed his battle with substance addiction, and that is what inspired this episode. It's important to note that neither Katie nor myself have struggled with substance addiction, and we aren't saying one is easier or more difficult than the other. We just know the toll it can take on a person who just can't quit their need for that unavailable love, and we want you to know that you can do it. You can get to the other side where there is love, a healed heart, and even your ideal relationship with your person, and you are worth it. If you need help finding resources for addiction or abusive situations, please email me at hello@clairetheheartbreakcoach.com and I will help you find the help you need.If you can identify with what it looks and feels like to be a love addict, whether you're in that relationship still, or you're trying to end the hot and cold, back and forth, I want to invite you to join my group coaching program by the same title as this podcast, Stop Wanting Him Back and Find Someone Better. In my program, I coach all women, it doesn't matter your age, race, religion, etc. This program is for all women looking to heal their hearts, fall in love with themselves, and then prepare to get back out there and find their person. I know you can do it because, not only have I done this work myself and found my Mr. Right, but I've also helped so many other women be able to do the same. In our conversation, Katie shares how this change of perspective, which was really a revelation from God, took place and how it has changed the way she and her family do things. Katie approaches parenting from a proactive standpoint instead of a reactive one and this has meant making choices to keep her kids from unnecessary stress and fear, especially during the past couple of years. In the past few years, Katie started homeschooling her kids and during this time gained a higher awareness of her son's struggles with anxiety, sensory processing, and more. Katie heard about Connect My Brain and several months later, her son has seen great improvements and has graduated from the Connect My Brain program! Katie's story is an encouragement to take your journey one day at a time, to focus on the present moment, and to trust God's plan for your life. This is a topic that I know I've talked about across many episodes, but I wanted to set aside an entire episode on settling for crumbs because it's something that I know I have done, as well as many of my clients. And until you are able to recognize the why and the how, it will just keep repeating itself, which won't bring you to a happy and fulfilling relationship. One client that I know has dealt with this a lot in her recent dating past is my friend, colleague, and guest coach in my group coaching program, Katie Johnston, who I've asked to join me in this episode. Together we talk about what it looks like when we settle for crumbs, why we do it, and what it takes to really break the habit so that you can stop settling and instead, ask for what you need and get it in return. I'm also really excited to share with you the upcoming webinar I created called, “Will He Come Back?” This webinar is really focused on those who are still really in the thick of it with their heartbreak. I know that when we're heartbroken, this is one of those repetitive thoughts or desires that we have surrounding them coming back and fixing things and no longer being heartbroken. You are not alone. Dive in on getting the answers to your questions and healing your heart. Chicago's sweetheart Katie Johnston-Smith makes a splash on MBSing by talking America's sweetheart, Tom Hanks. Seriously, who doesn't like that guy? Nobody. But I don't know anyone who likes him as much as KJS. At least not young Tom Hanks. Yeah, she specifically loves that scrawny, charming leading man, and we get into a discussion on whether that kind of guy even exists anymore in Hollywood and how he sometimes overcame the dreaded "80s pacing" of films and other times... not so much (we're looking at you, The Burbs). Come for the background on her "movement" surrounding Young Tom Hanks on Twitter, and stick around for such conversations as "you never wanna meet your heroes, and in this case..." "my hero is Tom Hank's weiner." That's a thing Katie said among other very funny, charming things about a funny, charming actor. It was all wonderful, and I think Katie lives up to what she thinks Tom does by having "the light always on."
