Welcome to Connect the Dots: Truth Bombs! Today I'm talking about how your baby's birth experience can affect their development. I explain why babies born vaginally get important immune benefits from mom's bacteria and how squeezing through the birth canal helps shape their head properly. As a mom who had a C-section, I share what I wish I'd known then about birth choices. I also talk about what to do if you need a C-section, forceps, or vacuum during delivery. I give simple tips for making a birth plan and why having a midwife or doula can be so helpful. Remember, being pregnant is natural, not a disease! This quick 5-minute video might completely change how you think about giving birth. Did you know that 90% of generic medications in America primarily come from China? In 2019, government advisor Rosemary Gibson revealed shocking information about medication quality and safety. Research found that 13% of generic medications coming into the US were defectively manufactured, containing carcinogens, lead, arsenic, and other toxins. As a parent or patient, you deserve to know what's going into your body. I also explore the concerning impact of food dyes on our health - especially for children. Red Dye #40 has been linked to allergies, migraines, and immune dysfunction, while Yellow #5 can damage DNA and white blood cells. These synthetic dyes can cause neurobehavioral problems in children and have already been banned in places like California and the UK. Food companies are getting sneaky too - rebranding dyes with innocent-sounding names like "allura red" or "brilliant blue" to make them seem natural. You'll find these harmful ingredients hiding in popular snacks like M&Ms, Doritos, and many children's cereals. Enroll in the Parent Membership Subscribe to the Connect My Brain YouTube Channel! Welcome to Episode 2 of Connect the Dots: Truth Bombs! Today, I'm talking about why pregnancy health matters so much for your baby's growth. I'll show you why treating mama like a queen isn't just a nice thought—it's truly needed for your baby to develop well! I'll explain how ongoing stress can change mom's brain and even take stress hormones from your baby through the umbilical cord. Did you know your baby's balance system forms first, then eyes (4-10 weeks), and finally hearing (18 weeks)? These early senses in the womb shape how your child will grow after birth. Movement is so important! Your baby needs to move in the womb to grow properly, and this movement helps their brain develop too. Babies are fully formed at birth but still learning how to use their bodies—and movement is the key! Join me as we learn how to give our babies the best possible start! This is the first episode of Connecting the Dots: Truth Bombs! Today I break down why your health before pregnancy matters more than you might think. I explain why just "feeling great" isn't enough to know what's actually happening in your body and how your health directly impacts your baby's brain development. I reveal why traditional lab tests might show "normal" results even when something's wrong, and why I recommend preparing 1-2 years before conception by understanding your body chemistry through functional labs. Whether you're planning for pregnancy or already have children with developmental concerns, it's never too late to make positive changes to your health or your child's. Today I wanted to focus on something absolutely fundamental to our health and development: chemistry. By chemistry, I mean the fuel that runs the human body. At Connect My Brain, I focus on the mechanical, chemical, and brain aspects of development. While I've talked extensively about mechanics (those developmental milestones children need to accomplish) and the brain (how movement wires up neural pathways), today I'm diving into that crucial third piece—the chemistry that makes it all possible. Without the correct fuel, it's incredibly difficult to make lasting neurological changes. This is one of the biggest challenges I face in my practice: helping families understand why the chemical aspect is so important for bringing everything together. Want to learn more? That's why I've poured my heart (and brain!) into our latest podcast episode. The vestibular system is nothing short of miraculous; it is our inner compass, granting us the grace of balance and the perception of motion. Today, we explore how the intricate dance of a baby in the womb is more than just a delightful kick—it's the very groundwork of neurological connections that shape our future. The nuances of labor and delivery are presented as a symphony of movement, where the sympathetic nervous system takes the lead, then yields to a slower tempo, easing the baby through the birth canal. Postpartum, newborns face the profound challenge of gravity—an invisible force that shapes posture, development, and exploration. Early movement serves as a recalibration for the vestibular system, syncing the eyes and ears in a dance of development. Subscribe to the Connect My Brain YouTube Channel! ➡️ Download Dr. Laura's guide to Developmental Milestones (it's free!) Today we will be exploring the intricate dance between eye movement patterns and brain function. We discuss the "Triangle of Development" with its cornerstones: the eyes, ears, and vestibular system, and how pivotal they are from the earliest stages of life. The development of the eyes, including the muscles and neurological connections, is crucial from birth and deeply intertwined with the coordination of the ears to help us navigate and understand the world around us. The ‘Triangle of Development' is a concept that I've introduced with my patients based on my extensive practice and even contributing to the creation of a piece of medical equipment. This triangle consists of the eyes, the ears, and the vestibular system—three essential components that connect to create a foundation for our neurological and sensory development. Understanding these connections can really help us understand the causes behind attention issues, anxiety, developmental delays, and language struggles. We know that the special senses, including sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch, are the electrical information to the brain. With the vestibular system joining in before these senses, they all play a crucial part in how we perceive and interact with the world. Excitingly, we'll introduce our new "Jump Start Test" and the "Fantastic Seven" exercises designed to address primitive reflexes and core stability. Today I want to share a case with you of a child who was toe-walking. At first glance, toe-walking might seem harmless. You might think the child just prefers it, but in reality, toe-walking is a sign of a retained reflex - the Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex (TLR). The TLR reflex already occurs when a baby is in utero and has to do with flexion and extension of the body. In the case of the child that I mentioned, this child experienced a lot of anxiety or worry and their toe-walking was actually triggered by their emotions. In this episode I'll explain more about the TLR and its importance, how we can help our kids integrate this reflex, and how reflexes can reappear even if they've been dormant for years. I'll also talk about the role of parents in getting a child the help they need and why you need to be willing to ask questions, share your ideas, and seek second opinions for your child when necessary. Healthcare providers need to work together because true health is composed of so many little pieces and no one knows all of the answers. Remember, it's never too late for you to help your child! Our culture is obsessed with following trends. When it comes to trends, people often follow them regardless of whether or not they make sense. This is true with things like trying to be on point with the latest fashion trends or always feeling like you need to buy the newest and coolest smartphone. Buying into trends is not only seen when it comes to things like fashion and music, but it also happens in the world of healthcare. When it comes to health, many common problems (such as attention issues or a strep infection) are actually normalized because parents just assume that every child will deal with these issues at some point. But just because something is common does not mean it's normal and as parents and healthcare providers, we need to question these “trends”. When we become so accepting of these trends, we begin to narrow a path of resolution. Instead of looking at multiple perspectives, we are trapped into a way of thinking specific to what mainstream or traditional healthcare is telling us. However, I believe resolution is possible and that if you give the body what it needs you can turn many things around. In this episode I share some case studies of patients I have worked with personally and how I approached their unique needs. It is never my goal to take away from traditional healthcare. I believe there is a time and place for it, but my desire is to see healthcare professionals collaborating and sharing multiple perspectives in order to really help our patients gain healing and success. Today I have a special guest on the show! Dr. Richard Aplin is a chiropractor based in Huntsville, Alabama with almost 40 years of experience. He is also the host of the BrainStim podcast and so as you can probably guess, we both love brains! This episode is a bit more casual and relaxed than some of my other episodes. It is really just a conversation where I asked Dr. Aplin to share some of his ideas with us and I promise you, this episode is full of all kinds of tips and some great analogies to help you understand your health, your body, and your brain. When Dr. Aplin works with a patient on a problem, he always tries to go and look at the process that caused the problem in the first place. There is a big difference between the processing that creates problems and the actual problems. He compared a health problem to a car hitting a ditch. If you find yourself in the ditch, you will do everything in your power to get out of the ditch. However, if you get back on the road and you don't know why you ended up in the ditch in the first place, you'll likely find yourself back there time and time again. If you address the process that is actually causing the problem you have, not only will you stop having the problem, but you will also find yourself handling additional problems that stemmed from the same initial process. No matter where you are in your health journey, Dr. Aplin shares some great insight. I'm so glad he could join me today! Today we're going to talk about brain injuries. I think this is an important conversation for us to have because often when people hear the term “traumatic brain injury” they think of a really severe injury but don't think about more mild or moderate injuries. When I talk about traumatic brain injuries, I'm not just talking about severe injuries. I'm talking about everything from a little bump on the head to a head injury that leaves a person in a coma. No matter how severe the injury, your brain will still respond in a similar way and if not taken care of properly, there can be life-changing long-term impacts. Brain injuries are usually an invisible problem. An individual might seem fine on the outside and they might even think they're fine without realizing that some of their struggles such as fatigue, irritability, headaches, or trouble focusing are actually a result of their brain injury. Anytime somebody hits their head, their brain literally slams into the inside part of their skull. No matter how severe the hit, this has potential to change or damage the brain. I think that we sometimes take these injuries too lightly because we really don't understand the chemical changes that occur in the brain after an injury. In this episode I talk about how brain injuries are categorized, long-term effects of brain injuries, and what we should do in order to increase our chances at healing from a brain injury.
