What a lovely weekend I had in Texas visiting my Aunt! It was jam packed with artistic and cultural experiences. A very special Friday morning was a studio visit with my Instagram Robin Maria Pedrero. It was our first time to meet in person and we had so much to discuss. On my return to Michigan, I said to Armin that we needed to invite her to be our podcast guest and here we are! Robin Maria Pedrero creates with skillful use of color and texture to bring to life unique works of art. An award-winning artist, her work appears in museum permanent collections in Florida and Greece as well as corporate collections, publications, and film. Her first solo museum exhibition took place at the Orlando Museum of Art followed by the Lake County Museum of Art in Florida. She is an elected signature member of the Pastel Society of America, and in 2012, was awarded Best Artist in Florida by Baterbys' Art Auction Gallery. Pedrero is listed in Florida International Magazine's Florida Artists Hall of Fame, and she won an international wine label contest with her art featured on a limited-edition Artiste Wine label in California.   Pedrero's artwork has been selected by Tamara Day for Bargain Mansions and featured on HGTV and Magnolia Network. Her work has been collected around the world in several countries.  Currently, Pedrero creates from her studio at Millhouse in the Cotton Mill in McKinney Texas.Armin and I talked with Armin about her different revenue streams for her art, her beautiful studio in the Millhouse Mckinney complex, and Robin's role as artist and curator for different exhibits throughout the world. If you are ever in the Dallas area be sure to check out her studio in Millhouse located in McKinney, an arty suburb with a super ambiance of history, art and dining. Check out all the show notes. Cerebral Women Art Talks Podcast

Ep.131 features Clotilde Jiménez, (b. Honolulu, Hawaii, 1990). He is a visual artist based in Mexico City. Jiménez received his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland, OH (2013) in Printmaking, and an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art, London, UK (2018) in Painting. Jiménez references intricate aspects of his life using strategically cut and arranged layers of multimedia collage that activate a dynamistic viewing of the visual narratives presented. “Most of my work is autobiographical, so collage allows me to tell several stories at the same time”, Jiménez states. Through a kaleidoscope lens, composite portraits within montaged vignettes, offer a dream-like gaze into the artist's inner thoughts. Emotions triggered from vivid dreams and memories take form, as the artist sketches daily. From this cathartic exercise, a singular visual language has emerged, resulting in thought provoking cannon of motifs: tropical fruits, pink painted fingernails, lingerie, and boxing gear. Close readings of Jiménez's work change initial evocations of whimsical frolic, and carefree simplicity, to varying interpretations that are dependent on the viewer's point of view, regarding gender performance, sexuality, social justice, and racial equality. Nonetheless, Jiménez utilizes quotidian, relatable childhood experiences that present the question, “What is so queer about queerness?” His work is featured in noted collections including; The Ford Foundation, Orlando Museum of Art, Hessel Museum of Art, and the Beth Rubin DeWoody collection. What a treat! In this episode, author and recovering bluebottle Cory McCarthy joined us to talk about research holes from his latest novel Man O'War, a coming-of-age YA about a trans swimmer growing up near Sea Planet, a marine life theme park in small-town Ohio. I fully expected us to mostly talk about sea creatures, and then we had a heart-to-heart about the nuances of writing queer YA, parallels between growing up trans and animals in captivity, and who coming out is really for (*cough dinosaurs cough*). But don't worry—there are still sea creature facts! Cory gave us tidbits about the inherent plurality of Portuguese man o' war, upsetting shark sex, and joyful penguin interactions, and more. Bonus game: count the times Cory and I laugh semi-maniacally about queer kidlit writer stuff, or the amount of times I say “that's so real.” Remember, kids: it's not that it gets better; it's that straight people get less important. SHOW NOTES: The New York Times article “Boys Don't Cry' 20 Years Later: For Trans Men, a Divisive Legacy” gives an overview of the many complex responses to this movie. I personally like the piece “Fighting to Thrive: Reflecting on Boys Don't Cry 20 Years Later” by William Horn on Bitch Media, which reminds us that the project of the movie is educating straight, cis people, and was not necessarily made for queer and trans people. Here's a quote from Horn: “Boys Don't Cry is powerful, but it's traumatizing. The movie is intentionally designed that way: It pulls you into Brandon's story so that you feel his fear and his pain. Good movies do that, and Boys Don't Cry remains important viewing for a cis audience. For people like me, it's a fear and pain that we already innately know.” The other trans YA novels I mentioned (published before 2011) were Parrotfish by Ellen Wittlinger and Luna by Julie Anne Peters. The two documentaries Cory mentioned are Blackfish and My Octopus Teacher. I asked Cory where he got his sea creature facts. He said many of them were from the science tomes of his youth, but he is also a lifelong fan of National Geographic for inspiring random research holes to go topple down into. [pic of preorder perk] From “Jean-Michel Basquiat's Enduring Fame: Why the '80s Art Star Remains Relevant Now” by Tessa Soloman in ARTNews: Jean-Michel Basquiat was a Neo-Expressionist artist who was famous in the 1980s, before dying of a heroin overdose in 1988 at 27 years old. He started as a graffiti artist, spray-painting walls around SoHo and the East Village with his friend Al Diaz, under the pseudonym SAMO, short for “same old shit.” He blew up after displaying work at a “New York/New Wave” show at P.S. 1, when viewers called him the new Rauschenberg.” His iconic works include Dustheads (1982), a seven-foot-tall canvas featuring two vibrantly colored, chaotic figures against a black background, and the sculptural painting Ten Punching Bags, a collaboration with Andy Warhol. The article Leah sent me was also from ARTNews, titled “The FBI Seized 25 Contested Basquiat Paintings from the Orlando Museum of Art.” I can't really summarize it because it seems to deal with issues of authentication and theft specific to the high art world. But I'm glad it lead me to learn a bit about Basquiat! Kathleen opens the show drinking a St. Brigid's Irish Lager from the Tom Crean Brewery in Ireland, which she LOVES. She reviews all of the activities of her weekend playing shows at The Mirage in Las Vegas, which is one of her favorite places to perform in the country. She experienced the best Drag show brunch of her life at Senor Frog's Drag Brunch at Treasure Island and had a complete blast watching queen Shannel and drinking mimosas with her friends Heidi and Marcia. Kathleen then took a cab to Downtown Vegas to have a few beers with Vegas Vic. “GOOD BAD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food AND in continuing her search for the best Ranch, Kathleen samples Tessemae's Organic Habanero Ranch dressing, which she thinks is delicious but too thick for salad and would be a wonderful dip. She moves on to taste Combos Seven Layer Dip flavored Stuffed Snacks, which she thinks to taste a little like something you would feed to a pet ☺. She finishes her tasting with M&M's White Chocolate Key Lime Pie flavored candy, which she thinks anyone who loves Key Lime Pie will enjoy (especially in the freezer.)QUEEN'S COURT: Kathleen updates the Termites on the activities of the queens: Queen Tanya headlined Nashville's Pride festival and wowed the internet with her fabulous Elvis-style jumpsuit. Cher has blown up her Twitter feed after the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v Wade, and Queen Stevie Nicks finished her Spring Tour and is also speaking out for women's rights in the US. UPDATES: Kathleen gives updates on the return of Q's creator, an anti-vaccine doctor is sentenced to prison for the Capitol riot, and Elon Musk is facing a $258B lawsuit over an alleged Dogecoin pyramid scheme.“HOLY SHIT THEY FOUND IT”: Kathleen is amazed to read about the discovery of a baby woolly mammoth in the Yukon named “Nunchoga,” which is the 1st found in North America, and the world's deepest shipwreck is discovered 80 years after being sunk.A CULT BUYS NELLY'S MANSION: Kathleen is a big fan of STL rapper Nelly, and is intrigued reading an article about the purchase of his crumbling mansion by Kingdom of God Global Church, which is considered by many to be a cult. DEFRAUDING BASQUIAT: As Termites know, Kathleen is a massive fan of the art world, and Basquait is one of her favorite artists. She's dismayed to read an article about a couple to try to steal a $45K from a Manhattan gallery, and an FBI raid removes 25 Basquait paintings from the Orlando Museum of Art as questions arise of the work's authenticity.VELVEETA CHEESE SMELLING NAIL POLISH: Kathleen loves cheese, but laughs out loud reading a news release about Velveeta cheese releasing a cheese-scented nail polish. She reminds everyone that showers are meant to prevent feet from smelling like cheese ;-) HONG KONG'S JUMBO FLOATING RESTAURANT SINKS: Kathleen is shocked to read an article outlining the activities involved in an accident that caused the sinking of Hong Kong's iconic Jumbo Floating Restaurant when it was being towed for repairs. RELOCATING EVEREST'S BASE CAMP: Kathleen reads an article advising that Nepal has decided to move Everest's Base Camp due to global warming and increased human activity. MONKEY KILLED IN CARTEL SHOOTOUT: Kathleen is saddened to read the details surrounding the death of cartel pet monkey “El Chango,” a Sicario monkey who was found with its apparent owner after a standoff between state security forces and the cartel. El Chango has been immortalized in a narcocorridos — a genre of folk songs glorifying drug kingpins, with that lyrics touch on a violent end.WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK: Kathleen recommends watching the new Season 6 of “Peaky Blinders” on Netflix, and “The Janes” documentary on HBO. Created through a complex system of painting, drawing, cutting, and collaging onto wood panels, her practice is centered around the depiction of figures, symbols, and abstract spaces using multi-layered ornamental surfaces and fields of color. Drawing on her experience as a Japanese-born artist growing up in Brazil and later practicing in the United States, Fueki's work embraces the visual language from these three distinct cultures. As Fueki explains: “I consider myself a mixed-language painter with interest in eastern and western perspectival systems, architectural graphics, pop animation, pre-Renaissance European painting, and exuberant color.”   SHOUT OUTS: Joshua Marsh, Bridget Caramagna, Alexi Worth, Ellen Altfest, Jackie Gendel, Hope Gangloff, Benjamin Degen, Caitlin MacQueen, Todd Knopke   LINKS:  https://www.dcmooregallery.com/   I Like Your Work Links: Submit Your Work Check out our Catalogs! EP 163: Aaron recorded a live show with Photographer E. Brady Robinson at the Hotel Indigo discussing her new Photo Exhibit SK8R GRLS. We discuss her inspiration behind the project, her love for roller skating, how she chose the Women for this and what is the soundtrack to this Exhibition.  IG:@ebradyrobinson   IG: MarylandArtPlace IG: Acutevisions  SK8R GRLS is a photo series by E. Brady Robinson celebrating the freedom and joy of roller skating. The  exhibition is on view at Hotel Indigo Baltimore, located at 24 West Franklin St. from Jan 25th - March 18th. A  public reception will take place on March 8th from 5 to 7 pm in celebration of International Women's Day.     In spring of 2021, Robinson took up skating as a way to stay active and reconnect with friends outdoors  during COVID-19. During these skate dates, she photographed friends and eventually, a wider network of  Baltimore-based female-identifying skaters. This work combines her love of athleticism, fitness, and fashion  photography. These images, made at a moment where it felt like the world was reopening after over a year  of closure and isolation during the pandemic, evoke a feeling of release and freedom.      Robinson completed her BFA in photography at MICA and MFA in photography at the Cranbrook Academy of  Art. Her background is in documentary photography and portraiture. The nine archival metal prints on  display at the Hotel Indigo depict strong women amidst a backdrop of Baltimore monuments and sites.  Locations such as Lake Montebello, Patterson Park, the Druid Hill Tennis Courts, and the Ravens parking lot,  signal the public landscape of Baltimore for those that know it well, in contrast to photographs made in the  artist's Maryland Art Place studio which utilize strobe and gel lighting to simulate the vibes of the 80's  roller skating rinks reminiscent of Robinson's childhood.      The skaters photographed include artists, musicians, and female entrepreneurs; women in the creative scene  in Baltimore, including Amy Cavanaugh, Caitlin Gill, Jade Davis, Tina Thompson, Brittany Wight, Les Gray,  Hayley Furman, Jessica Lauryn, Sophie Kluckhuhn, and Wildège François.   Brady Robinson is a photographer based in Baltimore and a current resident artist at Maryland Art Place.  She divides her time between personal art projects and commissioned work. Her documentary Art Desks was  published by Daylight Books with an essay by Andy Grundberg and distributed by ARTBOOK D.A.P. Her  photographs have been featured in The Washington Post, Channel One Russia TV, The Bund Shanghai,  Hyperallergic, BmoreArt, Featureshoot, Slate among others. Robinson leads photography workshops  throughout the United States. Select exhibitions include Lishui Photography Festival China, Orlando Museum  of Art, Cornell Fine Arts Museum, Katzen Art Center at American University, AIPAD NYC, and Art Miami. Select  collections include American University, Orlando Museum of Art and Spanish Cultural Center, Santo Domingo,  DR.      Robinson is a University Instructor of Photography at Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland, and faculty at  ICP in New York. She received her BFA in photography from The Maryland Institute, College of Art, and MFA  in photography from Cranbrook Art Academy in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Robinson is represented by  Addison/Ripley Fine Art in Washington, DC.    Maryland Art Place (MAP) inspires, supports, and encourages artistic expression through innovative programming, exhibitions,  and educational opportunities while recognizing the powerful impact art can have on our community. Jimenez has developed an artistic practice that spans multimedia collage resulting in a thought provoking cannon of motifs including: tropical fruits, pink painted fingernails, lingerie, and boxing gear. Emotions triggered from vivid dreams and memories take form, as the artist sketches daily. I caught up with Jimenez during the global lock down to learn more about his work and practice.

Interviews by Brainard Carey

Artist Bisa Butler at the Art Institute of Chicago. phot: John J. Kim. Bisa Butler was born in Orange, NJ, the daughter of a college president and a French teacher. She was raised in South Orange and the youngest of four siblings.  Butler's artistic talent was first recognized at the age of four, when she won a blue ribbon in an art competition. Formally trained , Butler graduated Cum Laude from Howard University with a Bachelor's in Fine Art degree.  It was during her education at Howard that Butler was able to refine her natural talents under the tutelage of lecturers such as Lois Mailou Jones, Elizabeth Catlett, Jeff Donaldson and Ernie Barnes. She began to experiment with fabric as a medium and became interested in collage techniques. Butler then went on to earn a Masters in Art from Montclair State University in 2005. While in the process of obtaining her Masters degree Butler took a Fiber Arts class where she had an artistic epiphany and she finally realized how to express her art.   "As a child, I was always watching my mother and grandmother sew, and they taught me. After that class, I made a portrait quilt for my grandmother on her deathbed, and I have been making art quilts  ever since." Bisa Butler was a high school art teacher for 10 years in the Newark Public Schools and 3 years at Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey. Interviews by Brainard Carey

Judith Page was born in Lexington, Kentucky, and studied art at the University of Kentucky and Transylvania University. Early influences were her father, an amateur historian, photographer, and raconteur, who instilled in her a love and respect for history and the creative process, and writers such as Flannery O’Connor and Carson McCullers who provided her with many potent visual images. Other early influences include the Roman historian Tacitus and the politician Cassius Clay. Page says that her "art emerges from a Gothic sensibility, a place where horror and beauty exist in close proximity, where innocence encounters depravity, where the spirit is consumed and revived from moment to moment.” Page lived and worked in Florida until relocating to New York City in 1992, and currently lives in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. She received individual artist grants from the Gottlieb Foundation, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the State of FL. Exhibitions include Pop Surrealism and The Photograph as Canvas, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum and Disarming Beauty: The Venus de Milo in 20th Century Art, Dali Museum, and solo exhibitions at Luise Ross Gallery, New York, NY; Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC; Massry Center for the Arts, Albany, NY; Lesley Heller Gallery, New York, NY and Stetson University, DeLand, FL. Known for her inventive use of materials and stimulating social commentary, Page’s numerous exhibitions and installation projects were written about in Art Papers, Sculpture, The New York Times, Art on Paper, and Art in America. Page’s art is represented in numerous public collections including Vanderbilt University; FSU Museum of Fine Arts, Tallahassee; University of KY Art Museum; Mint Museum of Art; University of TN; University of Iowa Museum of Art; and Orlando Museum of Art, FL. She was on the General Fine Arts faculty of MICA from 2004-2011 and on the faculty of the MFA Fine Arts program at SVA from 2010-2016. Her website is www.judithpage.com. Talking Out Your Glass podcast

The Secular Reliquaries of Therman Statom Therman Statom – sculptor, glass artist, and painter – is most notably known as a pioneer of the contemporary glass movement for his life-size glass ladders, chairs, tables, constructed box-like paintings, and small-scale houses; all created through the technique of gluing glass plate together. Sandblasted surfaces become a canvas for spontaneous vibrant colors and line work, which take nuances from Abstract Expressionism and concepts of Minimalism, while simultaneously incorporating a twist by using blown-glass elements and found objects.  Born in Winter Haven, Florida in 1953, Statom spent his adolescence growing up in Washington, D.C. His interest in the arts grew from a fondness of painting and he began to investigate ceramics at RISD. However, after an experimental glassblowing session with Dale Chihuly, he was soon hooked on the spontaneity of hot glass and its limitless possibilities. Statom went on to pursue studies at Pilchuck Glass School during its inaugural year, completing a BFA in 1974 from RISD, and later studied at the Pratt Institute of Art & Design.  Throughout his career, public artworks have been permanently installed at prominent locations including the Los Angeles Public Library, Corning, Inc. Headquarters, the Mayo Clinic, San Jose Ice Center, the Toledo Museum of Art, and the Jepson Center for the Arts in the Telfair Museum, Savannah as well as several hospitals across the country.  Statom’s artwork appears in numerous exhibitions annually, including solo and group shows around the nation and internationally. Over the span of his career, he has completed over 30 large, site-specific installations. Most notably in recent years, his 2009 solo exhibition Stories of the New World, at the Orlando Museum of Art, which spanned over 5,000 square feet, has been his largest installation to date. Exploring themes related to Juan Ponce de Leon’s 1513 search for the fabled Fountain of Youth as a point of departure, the installation referenced historic and contemporary themes of hope, discovery, ambition, and destiny. Visitors traversed the gallery space consisting of a mirrored maze, panoramic glass wall mural, a room-size structure built entirely of glass, and video projections. In conjunction with the exhibit, Statom partnered with the educational department of the OMA and the Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Eatonville to work with over 80 young students to create a work of art titled “Glass House,” which was a large, walk-though structure built from glass boxes designed by the children. The piece was later displayed at the annual summer community festival.  Much of the latter half of Statom’s career has been focused on the importance of educational programming within the arts. He has taken a deep interested in employing workshops as a catalyst for social change and in affect, positively impacting a community. Working directly with the artist himself, adults and children alike share a combined experience of exploring art making via a hands-on experience. Inhibitions and limitations are left by the wayside, and the practice or act of “doing” becomes a journey of self-discovery, creating an opportunity for the participant to go to a new place within themselves. Says Statom: “I believe art can be understood both conceptually and intuitively. I think there is a need for the general public to come to an understanding that to appreciate art and creativity they must trust his or her self; that extensive education is not a prerequisite for understanding art. Much of what I do is seeded in what is more of an intuitive process; a large portion of my work is exploring these processes within people and their environments. “The fact is, I believe that creativity is a part of all aspects of what people do; my studio and educational efforts via workshops and the support of outside programming, general educational and cultural institutions, are a reflection of this belief. I feel that art is tool for empowerment and education. It’s also a viable tool to investigate positive change and engage a culture through exploration.”

I had such a great time talking to the LA-based painter, Tomory Dodge. Tomory is a painter's painter and I felt like I was hanging out in his studio talking about his painting process, life, and where the two overlap. From talking about how he works in his studio, to how time constraints from having kids can push your work into weird unknown places, it was a pleasure to hear about his process.   Tomory recently had a show at Phillip Martin in L.A. You can read a review of the show in the Los Angeles Times here.   Tomory Dodge (b. 1974, Denver, CO) received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1998 and his MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 2004. His work is in the collections of such museums as Berkeley Art Museum (Berkeley, CA); Henry Art Gallery (Seattle, WA); Dallas Museum of Art (Dallas, TX); Knoxville Museum of Art (Knoxville, TN); Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Los Angeles, CA); Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art (Overland Park, KS); Orange County Museum of Art (Newport Beach, CA); Orlando Museum of Art (Orlando, FL); RISD Museum, Rhode Island School of Design (Providence, RI); San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, (San Francisco, CA); Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, DC); Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, NY); Weatherspoon Art Museum (Greensboro, NC); Yale University Art Gallery (New Haven, CT). In 2018, Dodge’s work was the subject of a solo exhibition at LUX Art Institute (Encinitas, CA). His work has been included in recent solo and group exhibitions at Rhode Island School of Design Museum (Providence, RI); Pizzuti Collection (Columbus, OH); National Museum (Oslo, Norway); Neuberger Museum of Art (Purchase, NY); Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art (Overland Park, KS); Sheldon Memorial Gallery, University of Nebraska (Lincoln, NE). Dodge’s work is the subject of several monographic catalogs and has been discussed in such publications as Art Forum, Flash Art, Modern Painters, Art Review, Los Angeles Times and New York Times. Mariam Pare’ is a visual artist, designer, and speaker. Her paintings and other works have been exhibited locally, internationally, and are in numerous private collections. Her public painting demonstrations have become a visual metaphor to the core of her message—encouraging people toward superior levels of performance and inspiring ideas of innovation and creative thinking. Her list of exhibition venues include the St. Petersburg Museum of Art, the Museum of Art Vancouver, the Orlando Museum of Art, First Canada Place, the New York City Children's Museum, the McCord Gallery, PerPopulus Gallery, and many others. Mariam has appeared on the Katie Couric Show and with Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb on the Today Show. She met with Pierce Brosnan at his home in Malibu allowing her to personally deliver a painting she had done for him in his iconic James Bond role. Mariam has also been interviewed on NPR and in the Huffington Post, USA Today, Chicago Tribune, MSN, and Reuters, just to name a few. In 1996 Mariam was a victim of random gun violence that let her paralyzed, the bullet remains in her spine to this day. All of her paintings have been done by mouth painting. In fact, she was accepted in to the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (MFPA) organization. She uses her talks and art as an advocate to bring awareness to disability culture. She’s spoken about the issues of stigma, relationships, and independent living. She sees artists with disabilities that are inspirations—Chuck Close, Tommy Hollenstein, Frida Kahlo, and Eric Stegemann. We discuss how making art about experiences help to process trauma and feelings. She has publicly addressed issues of mental health, depression, and suicide. “Mariam has branched out to collaborate with other artists with disabilities to actively pursue disability advocacy through her art. She uses a combination of digital art, painting, video, and photography to generate a unique story from her own viewpoint, using her own life to reflect the overall challenges and ambitions of the larger disabled community. Her goal is to make images that embrace a sense of beauty while simultaneously affirms disability identity and awareness.” Mariam is an inspiring person in many ways, and is a great role model for not only living life in full, but helping others to as well through beauty and creativity.
