We are playing a game by creating mini-marathons of movies featuring Star Wars actors in their non-Star Wars roles.   With a lack of Star Wars news as of the time of the recording, we decide to try something new. Many Star Wars actors are known for roles outside of their performances in Star Wars. Other actors famous for their roles in Star Wars don't have as extensive a career.   In this game, we are challenging ourselves to create mini-movie marathons by pulling three actors' names out of the proverbial hat and then picking one other movie each of those actors have appeared in. Some of the picks (we're looking at you Harrison Ford) resulted in easy choices. Other picks (hello, Joel Edgerton) are a bit more challenging.   So, what do you think of our picks? Would you have picked different movies? Download or stream this episode and then let us know what you would have done by reaching out at one of our social media contacts listed below.   Thanks for joining us for another episode! In a rare turn of events, we encounter an actually good movie—not just a good Eurospy movie, but just a flat-out banger of a movie—very late in the season and after we've become expert witnesses on just how bad and formulaic pretty much every Eurospy movie is. That's right, we're reviewing the 1966 film THE QUILLER MEMORANDUM featuring some cast you might have heard of, such as: Alec Guiness, Max von Sydow, George Segal, with a screenplay by... Once there was a time when Star Wars was just the name of a movie, and not the most toxic subject ever to hit the internet. Well, we yearn for that time, listener... so go with us on this journey back to the Skywalker homestead and get ready to harvest some moisture as we return to the very first movie we ever discussed on the show: Star Wars (1977). Among other things, Matt reiterates for the thousandth time that this movie should only ever be called Star Wars. You may be tempted to call it something else, perhaps some sort of chronological designation, or a fragmentary expression of some sort of new hopeulness. Resist this temptation. Also: We unpack why Laci has never been able to get into the original Star Wars movies, and why that is perfectly reasonable. It's long, and ambitious, and cost a lot of money to make, which hasn't necessarily been the mark of a movie that stands the Screen Test of Time.

This is Pete Fletzer and welcome to disturbances in the Force. All the links to the original sources can be found in the notes and I urge you to check them out. 1.The Obi-Wan Kenobi series will debut in less than two weeks on Disney Plus and the press tour surrounding it is in full swing. This past week Director Debora Chow and stars Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christense and Moses Ingram were seen in Berlin and London. In talking about her character, an Imperial Inquisitor named Reva, Moses Ingram said QUOTE “She is ruthless. She doesn't care about what people think about the way she does things. She'll cut people down and get the job done whatever it takes.” The actress went on to say about her costars, “even on set there were lifelong fans who would just get so moved by being around Ewan or Hayden. I think it's going to be a big deal for fans to see them at the center.” There have been no new nuggets of information about the story shared so far on the press tour but Ewan did say that it took him some time to get back to the Alec Guiness style of speaking for the title role. Obi-Wan Kenobi debuts on Disney plus on Friday, May 27th with the first two episodes of the six-part series.2.Video game industry insider Jeff Grubb said on a recent Grubbsnax stream that the title for the sequel to the wildly popular Jedi: Fallen Order game will be Jedi: Survivor. Grub has also said in previous scoops that gameplay footage from the sequel to the EA RESPAWN game would be shared at Star Wars Celebration later this month. The video game reporter also claims that Jedi: Survivor will be a next-gen console game only. There is no release date or confirmation of the title at this time.3.Keeping with video game news, Lego, the Skywalker Saga continues to make waves in the industry. According to the website GamesBeat, the brick-based Star Wars game is already ranked as the number two selling video game of 2022 so far ahead of the latest Pokemon offering and the epic Horizon Zero Dawn sequel trailing only Elden Ring in sales. 4.Bryce Dallas Howard was interviewed by friend of the podcast, Germain Lussier at io9 recently and of course the topic of Star Wars came up. The daughter of Solo 2 director Ron Howard, has been behind the camera for two episodes of the Mandalorian and the Book of Boba Fett episode titled “Return of the Mandalorian.” When asked if there was a story that would spark her interest in direting a Star Wars film she said quote “Oh my goodness, I think it would take someone asking me.” Bryce will next be seen ON screen reprising her role as Claire Dearing for the third time when Jurassic World Dominion hits theaters June 10th.5.Speaking of directors on Disney Plus Star Wars shows, this week, in a simple photo of a an Ahsoka-logo emblazoned directors chair and a signature cowboy hat belonging to one Dave Filoni, the official star wars twitter account revealed that production has officially begun on the Ahsoka live-action series. Shortly thereafter, rumors emerged from movie scooper Daniel RPK and Adam Frazier that actor Mathew Law has been brought on to the show in a quote “big role.” The Six-foot one Law is best known for a role in four episodes of Agents of Shield. This unconfirmed casting joins other rumored actors including Natasha Loo Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, and Mary Elizabeth Winsted, Ivanna Sahkno (SOK-NO) and Ray Stevenson in unidentified roles. The Ahsoka series does not yet have an official release date.6.Michael Waldron, the writer who worked on Loki and Doctor Strange among other Marvel projects, is finally turning his attention to the long rumored Kevin Feige Star Wars film. He told Variety QUOTE ““We're finally into it in earnest. I mean, I'm writing away. It's a lot of fun…It just doesn't have a bunch of TV shows and movies that you're servicing on top of it, the way I did with Doctor Strange. So it's nice..” The Feige film was first mentioned in 2019 and is expected to be a one-off project. There is no title or release date from Lucasfilm for the movie at this time.7.In Star Wars book news, friend of the show Mike Chen is officially a Star Wars novelist. His new book hit shelves on May 10 called Brotherhood and it chronicles events at the start of the Clone Wars and features the relationship between Anakin and Obi-Wan. Included in the book are familiar characters Padme Amidala and Asajj Ventress. You can buy the book now at the link in the show notes from Amazon. 8.Also this week, the cover for Star Wars: The Princess and the Scoundrel was revealed featuring Han Solo and Leia Organa in a romantic pose with the Halcyon Starcruiser and the ewok village on Endor in opposing corners. But trouble lurks in the form of stormtroopers charging in at the edge of the artwork. Beth Revis' novel is expected to hit shelves on August 16 this year. That wraps it up for this week's Disturbances in the Force. BUT, through Alec's brilliant acting, he was able to portray the good times he had, the PTSD of the clone wars, losing a friend to the dark side all in a deep, blank stare. Incredible acting.

POP ART, WHERE I FIND THE POP CULTURE IN ART AND THE ART IN POP CULTURE: CARRY ON CAMPING-The Bridge on the River Kwai/King Rat “What have I done?” People do it different ways. Some use sleeping bags under the stars. Some use tents. Some use air mattresses and bring along TVs. Some dress up in drag. Others do it spending time as POWs. Sounds like it's time for Episode 71 of Pop Art, the podcast where we find the pop culture in art and the art in pop culture. On Pop Art, my guest chooses a movie from popular culture, and I'll select a film from the more art/classic/indie side of cinema with a connection to it. For this episode, I am happy to welcome back as my guest, blogger and podcaster movierob, who has chosen as his selection the David Lean/Alec Guinness epic The Bridge on the River Kwai, while I have chosen the more cynical Bryan Forbes angry young man film, King Rat, both about prisoners in a Japanese internment camp during World War II. And in this episode we answer such questions as: Who was the first actor considered for the Alec Guiness role in The Bridge on the River Kwai? What happened to George Segal's career? What mistake did Pierre Boulle make about the location of the river and what did the government of Burma do in response? Where was King Rat filmed? Where did the Corporal Bogey march come from and how did it end up in the movie? Are both films about being at war, or are they really about the British class system? What did William Holden have to do to his body to take the role in …Kwai? What game show host appeared at the end of King Rat? What horror film did author James Clavell write that launched his screenwriting career? Alec Guinness wrote and starred in this very funny and inspirational film about a painter who is connected to, and driven by, a strange mystical force called art. Directed by Ronald Neame. Starring Alec Guinness, Kay Walsh, Renee Houston, Mike Morgan. Screenplay by Alec Guinness based on the book by Joyce Cary. How is the world wrong about this movie? From Andras: This is my favorite Alec Guinness performance. Even though it was filmed in ‘57 and released in ‘58 “The Horse’s Mouth” feels like the beginning of the 60’s with its anarchic exuberance and rebellion in the name of art. More beatnik than hippie, I can’t help but feel like it influenced, or at least entertained, The Beatles and the rest of that generation of young British rockers and comedians when they were just inspired English kids like the one played by the poor doomed Mike Morgan in this film. "Star Wars" effectively invented the genre of the "Space Opera" and it has entertained and influenced many fans and filmmakers in their endeavours - and as a result of this film there has been many other stories told featuring the iconic characters that this film first introduced and there will undoubtedly be many more to come in the future. Introduction! Thanks for the warm and overwhelming support on the return! Chapter 007 Recap Parzival has an epiphany that his home school planet of Ludus is actually the resting place of the Tomb of Horrors. After exploiting away to travel there without zero credits, he manages to find the entrance and makes his way in, ready for the perils that lie ahead. Chapter 0008 Summary With the help of a map from the Tomb of Horrors module, Parzival makes his way through the treacherous tomb avoiding traps and monsters and collecting a heavy amount of gold pieces along the way. He's eventually confronted by Acererak who challenges him to a best 2 out of 3 game of Joust, the classic arcade game. Parzival bests Acererak winning the copper key along with a clue to the first gate but before he's able to leave the Tomb of Horrors, he's stopped short of the entrance by a mysterious figure who making their way inside as well… Chapter 0008 Narrative  Parzival uses his map to navigate through the ToH and avoid most of the traps and monsters Levels up like a few types of classes; monster xp vs GP xp; gp xp converts to OASIS credits He eventually makes his way to the Pillared Throne Room where he sees a throne and Acereak sitting there which is a break from the D&D module The voices inside our heads here - what did you hear when you read the booK? "Not horses," he replied, stepping away from his throne. "Birds." The rules to win a copper key, best two out of three. Of course, Parzival had honed his skills over time and credits Aech as it was his favorite (and former) game used to settle asinine pop culture disputes, but did you ever take issue with just how good Wade/Parzival was at everything? I've seen some of the negative criticism from people who didn't paritcularly like the novel and it's a go-to for a lot of those people. Parzival gets his arse handed to him in match #1; but then asks to play on the other side in order to win games 2 and 3 After the second win, Acererak pounds on the side of the cabinet smashing into pixles and graciously congratulates Parzival before taking the form of Anorak. Anaorak hands him the copper key, and Parzival notice two lines of text etched into the key reading, “What you seek lies hidden in the trash on the deepest level of Daggorath.” He immediately knows exactly what this hints refers to and has a hunch that he needs to travel to Middletown, a re-creation of Halliday's hometown as a boy. There, in Halliday's old home, he would find a "Dungeons of Daggorath" game and somehow that would lead him to the first gate to use the copper key on. All he needed to do now was get out of the Tomb of Horrors and make his way immediately there, but just as he was leaving the tomb, he is confronted by the silhouette of another avatar… The Pop!  Reference: “My flashlight reached into the darkness ahead, flickering off the damp stone walls. The last known photo of the great poet. Welcome to another episode of the Bowie Book Club, where wild speculation and grasping for straws about Bowie’s favorite books has reigned supreme since 2016. This time we read The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot, and tried to talk about anything else beside the poem (and you know...that other thing that's going on). Apologies again for the recording weirdness! This week on The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast, Jonathan and Rem dig deeper into "Star Wars Episode III Attack of the Clones" from 2012 and directed by George Lucas. The PositiveWhen talking about the Star Wars, it's important to distinguish between the prequels (1-3) and the original trilogy (4-6). When discussing the prequels, the conversation usually turns to 'which one was least bad', and you'll find most people split, half think 'Clones' was better than 'Sith', but the other half hold the opposite opinion.  Jonathan thought Clones was the best of the bunch, and Rem prefers 'Sith'.  If we were to remove the awful attempt at a romance between Anakin and Padme, Clones actually becomes a tolerable story about an attempt to assassinate Senator Padme and the search for the culprit. John Williams turns out a fantastic music score as usual, and there were some very interesting sound desgin. The NegativeAs we said, the romance between Padme and Anakin was poorly written, and the actors did their best with very poor dialogue. We'd love to have had more development of the Count Dooku character and his story line. Even though there was less Jar Jar Binks, there was a noticeable increase in the annoyance factor of C-3PO. Over all, Clones is a film that wasn't necessary, and didn't understand what it was trying to accomplish. The VerdictConsidered one of the least worst of the prequels, "Attack of the Clones", like the other prequels really isn't required viewing. If you've not seen the prequels, good for you.  Best to keep it that way.   Listener Feedback Kevin McVeyBy far, the WORST of the series! Corey BlantonI still cringe thinking about the scene where Anakin and Padme are in that field and Anakin starts riding on the back of some kind of giant cow-beetle. The special effects looked horrible here and I feel sorry for Natalie Portman having to share the screen with one of the worst actors ever in Hayden Christiansen. Brian CampbellI loved this episode! The realistic CG environments really pull you into the action plus we get the benefit of watching the chemistry between Hayden and Portman just sizzle on-screen. Just watching Anakin leer at Padme while monotoning: "From the moment I met you, all those years ago, not a day has gone by when I haven't thought of you. And now that I'm with you again... I'm in agony." Well that doesn't give me the creeps at all! Anthony FarnsworthEpisode 2 made me want to try some "Deathsticks" Doug FergusonI'm finding as time goes on, this is the episode that's the hardest to defend. George Lucas should never be let anywhere near a screenplay when romantic dialogue is needed. Just... no. Padme and Anakin's story the worst until it gets to Tatooine and it's no longer just them. BUT, there are some cool things this film has to offer. I enjoy the story following Obi-wan as he investigates the clone army and chases Jango Fett. And I really love the battle in the arena at the end. That whole sequence progressing from execution to huge Jedi battle is actually one of my favourite scenes in a Star Wars movie, second only to the battle on Hoth. The major downside is I feel that there was a missed opportunity here. I would have really loved it if it turned out that Count Dooku was actually a renegade Jedi who knew where the Republic was heading and turned out to be the beginning of the Rebel Alliance! In this movie he would be treated as a bad guy, but as an audience member, we see tragedy unfold as his attempts to expose Palpatine are thwarted by Obi-Wan and Anakin as those two try and do the right thing. I think that would have been a much stronger, bolder choice. But alas... I mean, come on, since it's a prequel and we know how things are going to play out, might as well use that as an advantage. Jennifer RobertsonI believe this episode inspired the documentary film The People vs. George Lucas. Balbinder BhatiaGentlemen and possible guest of any gender, I'm not sure if this is worse than Episode 1, (at the very most it is on par with that trainwreck). I remember when I went to see this at the Cinema, thinking how it was better and how cool the Yoda fight scene was, having revisited the film as a more discerning adult, I can't believe I was ever so naïve, maybe it was just the hopefulness of youth. With the exception of Ewan McGregor turning himself into Alec Guiness playing Obi Wan, there wasn't much to like about this film. Hayden Christensen was stiff and boring most of the way through, they didn't need to bring in baby Bobo Fett, and yes they had less Jar Jar Binks, but then went and added more of the second most annoying character in the series C3PO. Yes I said it. Deal with it and keep up the great work Ton de WitteI enjoyed the action scenes. The romantic stuff? Well, not the strongest stuff by Lucas. What I liked was count Dooku trying to recruit Obi Wan to the dark side. Those Siths are always busy trying to become the big boss and betraying the other Sith, just like Vader wanted to recruit Luke and Sidious having Anakin kill Dooku. Overall this movie is a victim of having to be a bridge, like I and III to the original trilogy. Nick JensenOh man, this is probably the hardest Star Wars movie for me to watch. Like Episode I there are a few good things to enjoy, I like the battle at the end with all of the Jedi (and can't complain about how Natalie Portman and her costume look during their "execution") and the really metropolitan world at the beginning I enjoyed. However, the good parts of this film are few and far between, and nothing as cool as Darth Maul shows up. Lucas makes these prequels focus on Anakin, but somehow finds the worst actors to play him...a huge failure considering this shifts the whole view of the original trilogy as well. I can forgive Jake Lloyd more than Hayden Christensen, because Jake was just a kid and it's harder to find good child actors I guess but ugh Hayden Christensen wtf. How could anything that Lucas saw in auditions make him want to cast this guy with no likability or charisma, then again I'm making the assumption that Lucas knows what to look for in actors. History shows that Lucas doesn't know how to direct actors and it really shows, also a lot of the effects are pretty bad so quite a fail all around on this one. Also to answer the question you asked...no, this is not better than Episode I to me. Hayden Christensen's horrible acting really tips the scale and makes this the worst of the series for me. On the flip side Darth Maul helps me enjoy Episode I more, even if he was criminally underused. Trevor LaboucaneI've been re-watching these with my daughter. Every time I see any of Episodes I, II or III I have a harder time listening to the dialogue. I think I would describe the feeling as increasing disappointment. Ray RI think this was the best of the prequels. If you ignore the love story (no aspect of which isn't horrible) then it's a really good film. It has a real film noir mystery component which admittedly is hard to recapture on subsequent viewings but Obi-Wan as the gumshoe (a bizarre cross between Sam Spade and a Priest which I think really works) trying to unravel a mystery all leading up to an epic battle is a real strength of the film. I don't care how cool you were on the outside, when Yoda showed up and said "Around the survivors, a perimeter create" your inner child was yelling "F yea! Kick some ass Yoda!". And then he follows up this brigade commander badass-ery with a person lightsaber duel unlike any other. And the cinematic moment before that when Mace reveals himself by activating his purple lightsaber from just out of frame...these are some great Star Wars moments. Don't let that horrifically written and performed love story totally kill the film. I want a Phantom Edit that removes the love story and then you'll have a truly great film. I'd do the edit myself if I wasn't a year behind in editing on my YouTube Channel Vacation Impossible and deathly afraid of a lawsuit Mitch ToddI'm waiting with baited breath for the new movie - Star Wars: The Return of Jar Jar Binks!
