Vexillologists should be delighted this week as we attempt to raise the cinematic banner as high as we can when we discuss the top 5 Flags. From fictional countries to cartoon weaponry, it's actually churches that prove to be a surprisingly good place to go to collect them, after all it's a great place to seek pennants. LAST FLAG FLYING is Richard Linklater's frequently moving but not entirely successful exploration of patriotism, friendship and loss which sees former Marine Larry "Doc" Shepherd (Steve Carell) reunite with Vietnam veterans Sal (Bryan Cranston) and the Reverend Richard Mueller (Laurence Fishburne) in order to bury his son, killed in action in Iraq. When a dark truth emerges about Larry Jr.'s death, Doc resolves to bring his son home to bury him in his civilian clothing alongside his recently deceased wife. Along the way, the three men find themselves coming to terms with the shared experiences of a war that continues to shape their lives through painful physical and mental trauma. The meaning of heroism is a complex issue which the movie handles sensitively and the movie is at its best when the leads are allowed to breathe life into thin characters. Sitcom style asides like Sal and Mueller being arrested as terrorists or a trip to buy a newfangled thing called a mobile phone are a distraction from the more interesting thematic content of the movie. Staple of 80's Sunday night television, BULLSEYE is our kids tv selection this week as we take a look back at a time when moustaches were thick, mullets were magnificent, and working class northerners were paraded on British tv for the very first time vying for the chance to win a washing machine, toaster or of course a speedboat. Jim Bowen doesn't look a day over sixty-five which is a shame because he was 44 when he hosted episode four of the first season, the instalment we watched for this review. Find out just why there were so many speedboats, reminisce about the casual sexism and homophobia and find out which serial killer was convicted using evidence from the show.We love to hear from our listeners! the sight of Ye (who recently changed his name from Kanye West) and Drake on stage together is not something fans would ever expect to see, because of their long-running feud. For the past few years we've seen the former friends locked in a war of words, lyrics and even emojis. But they've put that to one side for a concert to raise awareness for a man they both want to be freed from jail. Larry Hoover, 71, is in one of the most secure prisons in the US. He's been behind bars for more than five decades for his involvement in crimes such as gang-affiliated murder. Court documents from July say Hoover was one of the leaders of a Chicago gang called Gangster Disciples between 1970 and 1995. Under Hoover's direction, the gang sold "great quantities of cocaine, heroin, and other drugs in Chicago". In 1973 he was convicted for ordering the killing of a 19-year-old neighbourhood drug dealer and sentenced to 150-200 years. In 1997 he was given six life sentences after being found guilty of federal drug conspiracy, extortion and continuing to engage in a criminal enterprise. His supporters say while in prison Hoover has told followers of the Gangster Disciples group that he denounced violence, wanted all members to get an education in school and has shown rehabilitation. Larry Hoover has unsuccessfully appealed to be freed, or to be put in a lower security prison, under the First Step Act - which is a way to challenge extremely long sentences for federal drug offences. In the appeal case the court was told Hoover had been under "severe isolation" in jail, including being in solitary confinement for up to 24 hours a day. According to the Hoover Project - which campaigns for his release - keeping him longer than the time he's served "serves no practical purpose". Raised in Chicago, Ye has supported Larry Hoover for a while and has been trying to get him out of prison. He brought up the case when he met former President Donald Trump in 2018 and asked for Hoover to be pardoned (which didn't happen). Ye also has a song on his new album Donda called Free My Father, which features Larry's son, Larry Jr speaking. Speaking ahead of the concert in Los Angeles, Larry Hoover Jr said the event would help to take his dad's "plea for redemption worldwide and show that we are truly stronger together on behalf of any and everyone with a loved one wrongly or unjustly incarcerated". Hoover's lawyer Justin Moore told Newsbeat there will be future efforts to free him using the First Step Act. "We are cautiously optimistic that Larry, who is now in the twilight of his years, can show that he can re-enter society and adjust to life as a fully rehabilitated citizen." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/masseffect/support
Larry Kenneth Robert Walker Jr., was born December 1st, 1966 in Maple Ridge, a suburb of Vancouver, Canada, to Larry Sr., and Mary Walker, both of Scottish decent. Larry Jr. was the youngest of four sons, Barry, Carey and Gary, with all four boys dreaming of playing in the NHL. Early on, Larry wanted to be a pro-goaltender, and made a childhood friend with future Hockey Hall of Famer Cam Neely. Walker honed his skills blocking shots from Neely, and would play hockey and volleyball at Maple Ridge Secondary school, where baseball was not offered. His brother Carey was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens, and Larry was sure he would soon follow in his footsteps.
As promised, we asked Larry King to return this week. Luana Anders our friend on the flipside, helped facilitate the conversation. We asked him to talk about his life and journey - growing up in Brooklyn and then heading down to Miami. He talks about his mother and father, and who was there to greet him on the other side. He talked about some of the people that he knew in life, that are different when they get back home. He mentions Bernie Madoff - who stole 2.8 million from him life, but "isn't a thief on the flipside." This is something often reported - that people behave a certain way on the planet, their higher self isn't the same way. He was sporting his favorite Dodger's cap (Jennifer didn't know he was a Dodgers fan). He said that he met with his children when he crossed over, Any and Chaia. He had messages for Larry Jr as well as his kids Chance and Cannon. He made a number of comic comments about his wives - and Jennifer correctly heard him say he had been married 8 times (to 7 different women.) In the last portion of the show, we spoke about the recent tragic events where Lady Gaga's dog walker was attacked and two of her dogs were taken. Jennifer saw things a bit differently - she said that she felt the dognapping was financed by someone who "wanted to hurt her." That the people who did the theft changed cars and put the dogs - what seemed to be at sea - as she felt them being on the water. She sensed they were near Santa Barbara in a boat - either named "Princess" or "Prince" or that belonged to someone with that name. Again, she felt that it was a Russian person who had a bone to pick with Lady Gaga and paid for the dognapping to happen. Jennifer works with law enforcement on missing person cases. She's been helpful to Bill Bratton former NYPD commissioner as well as other agents in the U.S. She's part of a consortium of mediums who help law enforcement pro bono to help them in their work. Information is always subject to misinterpretation - and other issues. But in the hopes that they can track down whomever took the dogs, she offered to help in this small fashion.

Conor McLaughlin is an adjunct professor in the Leadership Studies Department at San Diego University - where he teaches on the ethics of leadership. His work is heavily influenced by his punk roots and straight edge lifestyle, which we get into on this episode! Conor is a well-dressed academic punk, which also sort of bucks the typical stereotypes of what a punk should/could look like.We dig into a lot of social and societal issues surrounding punk, privilege, and working in higher education as white men who are working toward dismantling systems of oppression from the inside. It isn't easy work, but we lay some groundwork for HOW it could be done - perhaps a follow up episode will be needed for this one!MUSIC NOTES:- This week we featured tunes from the I Kill Giants self-titled album, which was originally released five years ago but is now getting a remastered reissue from Near Mint Records on June 15th.- We shared the tunes, "Larry Jr." and "Collector" on this episode - and if you liked what you heard, go to wearenearmint.com to snag a vinyl or digital copy of the album.- You can also check out ikillgiants.bandcamp.com to listen to the album on Bandcamp - or find it on Spotify! As always, you can CHECK OUT THE SPOTIFY PLAYLIST!ADVERTISING NOTE:- I wanted to hype up the artwork and services of my buddy, Corey Purvis, this week! Larry Nance Jr. has been everything Cavaliers fans hoped he would be when he was acquired at the trade deadline. Tristan Thompson, meanwhile, hasn't been quite up to the form he showed in playing an enormous role in the Cavs' title run in 2016, and he's now sidelined with an ankle injury. With Tristan down, Larry Jr. is getting a shot in the starting lineup, and the early returns have been promising. What happens to the Cavs' frontcourt when TT returns? … Plus: Would the QB-desperate Browns really pass on a quarterback at the top of the draft? Also, was there anything the Indians could have done to better distribute their limited supply of tickets for Opening Day?
