Spaulding Decon was born from a desire to help families in need. While serving as a police officer in Kansas City, Laura Spaulding witnessed the devastation caused by crime. The already grieving families were shocked to discover that the police were not responsible for cleaning up the scene. At that moment, Laura decided to work with the family herself to get their home cleaned up. In 2016 Spaulding Decon moved into a franchise model, becoming the first nationally franchised decontamination service to offer crime scene, hoarding, and meth-lab cleanup throughout the United States. We approach every job with the same goal that sparked our creation, to help people in need. Laura Spaulding, writer at the Gospel Coalition, shares why taking the long view revolutionized her parenting and how we interpret Proverbs 22:5-6, emphasizing the preparation for the journey to come for each child. Parenting: Taking the Long View We want to raise our children well. Because of that, we look for instructions. That was true for parent and educational consultant Laura Spaulding. “It seemed to be that there was always just a right way presented to you, and some of it came from the Christian culture, and some of it came from the neighborhood, and some of it came from TV,” she says. Spaulding is the author of a January 2024 Gospel Coalition article titled Taking the Long View Revolutionized My Parenting. Christian parents hold on to Proverbs 22:6, where we're instructed to “train up a child in the way he should go,” so that, “when he is old, he will not depart from it. Taking that verse apart and recognizing what it really is saying: it is saying, ‘Start them this way, and it finishes this way.' Like all the middle is so unique to each person,” she says. Two decades into her parenting journey, Spaulding believes she's developed some perspective. “The chief end of parenting is not getting kids into perfect colleges so that they can find the perfect job and marry the perfect spouse, so that they could turn around and have perfect kids of their own,” she says. “The chief end of parenting, just like the chief end of life, is perfection for all eternity.” Gospel Coalition That's the kind of perfection that doesn't come from formulas. It comes from Christ. “The ‘perfection for all eternity' comes at the end of the race. At the end of the journey. And so our job as parents is to prepare our kids for a journey. It is to get them started.” Get to know your children well, she says, and parent them accordingly. “Put the parenting books away and instead study the child in your arms,” she says, “really paying attention to what are their unique gifts and limitations. What motivates them. What stresses them out. What lights them up.” Proverbs 22:6, Spaulding says, is a gracious invitation for taking a long view on the development of our children. “Use what you learn about them to help them know themselves, to help them know and relate to their Creator, to help prepare them for the good works that God has prepared in advance for them to do. Laura Spaulding has not had a standard road to success. She went into the military in the early 90s because she was homeless and wanted to go to college. After college, she became a cop in the Midwest. And then, solely because she wanted to earn overtime, she agreed to work undercover pretending to be a sex worker. That led into undercover work busting drug dealers. From there it led to a crime scene clean-up business, then a crime scene cleanup business that also flips the real estate where the crime took place and then a franchise. Have I mentioned the $30 million real estate portfolio or the millions of social media subscribers? Well, it's all in this episode—along with her tips for bouncing back from failure. For more info, go to www.failyourway.com.

In this episode, Vincent and Ajay meet Laura Spaulding, Founder and CEO of Spaulding Decon. She shares how she found herself running what she describes as a “recession-proof” operation, as well as the unique challenges of franchising a crime-scene cleanup company. Vincent admits he's afraid of rats and asks Laura what crimes she thinks she could get away with. Give it a listen.
Laura Spaulding worked as an undercover narcotics detective, and her time on the force caused her to recognize an underserved need for crime scene cleaning and meth lab cleanup. So, she began Spaulding Decon in Tampa, Florida in 2005. Laura franchised the company in 2016, and they now have 24 locations across the country as the first nationally franchised decontamination service to offer crime scene, hoarding, and meth-lab cleanup services. What you'll learn about in this episode: How Laura blazed trails to become Kansas City's only female undercover police officer The compromising situations Laura was in while working undercover in narcotics and prostitution How Laura learned to control her fear in life-threatening scenarios to stay in character Why Laura made the decision to leave her career with the police force What lead Laura to start a successful crime scene cleanup business How the business evolved into a franchise with repeatable systems and processes How Laura's business evolved during the pandemic into the world of sanitization Resources: YouTube: www.youtube.com/c/crimescenecleaning Website: www.spauldingdecon.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lauraspaulding/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/spaulding-decon-llc/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/spauldingdecon/ Twitter: @SpauldingDecon Conquering Fear and Becoming Unstoppable Today, Laura Spaulding is a thriving entrepreneur who owns a successful crime scene and meth lab cleanup business, Spaulding Decon. However, prior to owning her own business, Laura blazed trails as Kansas City's only female undercover police officer, working to investigate drug and prostitution offenses in the most dangerous part of the city. During our conversation, this unstoppable lady shares how she learned to deal with the constant fear of her life being in danger at every waking moment, and she talks about how this incredible courage has helped her succeed as an entrepreneur and business owner. The Worst Sides of Humanity During Laura's time as an undercover officer, she experienced some of the worst, most terrifying, and most unimaginable situations. Her life was constantly in danger, and she had to learn to think fast and protect herself. To preserve her undercover status, she elected not to wear a gun or a wire, so her nerve and wit were the only things keeping her alive in many situations. Talk about being forged in battle! She also had to learn to keep calm and stay in character even when her life was in direct danger. This remarkable, unstoppable courage teaches us all that we're capable of anything we can imagine. Bringing Courage to a New Arena That same bravery led Laura to leave the police force and establish her own business cleaning up crime scenes and meth labs and other biohazards. The sad fact is that Laura quickly realized she could make far more money this way than she had by putting her life in jeopardy every day of her life as an undercover officer. Still, the new work was hard and potentially dangerous too. But Laura's tenacity and fire pushed her to keep going, and during the 2008 economic crisis, business began truly booming even while other industries struggled. In 2016, she turned the business into a franchise, and today it has grown to 24 locations across the United States. Laura shows us exactly what is possible when we refuse to be anything but unstoppable.
