James Mangold's Cop Land Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, Robert DeNiro, and Sylvester Stallone in one of the most highly-anticipated films of the 1990s . . . Springing from the headlines of the 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, and today, James Mangold's 1997 police corruption drama was released to critical acclaim and tepid box-office. In an era of 90s Independent filmmaking, focusing on newspaper/magazine headlines and evening newscasts, Mangold would write and pitch a story (ostensibly a Western) set in modern day life. The reluctant hero, Sheriff Freddy Heflin (an overweight, tired, and sad Stallone), who is neither the Rocky or Rambo hero Stallone is known for, fighting the corruption of an all-star cast of big-city police living outside of the city in a mob financed town. Stallone versus Keitel, Robert Patrick, Peter Berg and John Spencer, with a cocaine-addled Ray Liotta as back-up, and a disheveled, angry, and calculating Internal Affairs officer played by DeNiro manipulating the scene, Mangold's second film - with obvious comparisons to Scorsese - stands out as an brutal and honest look at police corruption and those wiling to stand up against it. Andrew Dominik's Killing Them Softly It's becoming increasingly difficult to find straight-forward, honest, and personal stories at the movie theater. The low to medium budget films that populated the 1970s have cast a shadow that continues to excite and inspire modern audiences. In the wasteland of re-vamps, sequels, action and comic book dreg, a handful of pictures crawl out of the monotony. In 2012, one of these films was released and quickly disappeared from theaters. With the star power of Ray Liotta and James Gandolfini, supporting players Richard Jenkins, Scoot McNairy, and Ben Mendelsohn, and executive producer and star, Bradd Pitt, Andrew Dominik's Killing Them Softly should have been a box office hit and a critical darling. However, a film as bleak as this one - profiling the economic problems leading to the 2008 financial crisis, a difficult and racially contested presidential election, and a bleak social atmosphere focusing on blue collar criminals and hitmen versus corporate criminal bosses - Dominik's third film would be dismissed and buried by a public and studio system that would prefer leaving the pasat as it was. This week we look back at it with a decades perspective. Take a listen and let us know what you think. Determined to land the role of troubled outsider Anita, Drew fought hard for the part — ultimately channeling her own vulnerability, rebellion, and resilience into one of the rawest performances of her career. With fearless direction from Tamra Davis and a fantastic supporting performance by James LeGros, the "lovers on the run" film became an underrated cult classic. Guncrazy was also proof that the then-16-year-old Drew Barrymore was capable of far more than Hollywood had given her credit for. A Bronx Tale (1993) is Matty V's pick, and brings a very personal story to the screen and marked Robert De Niro's directorial debut, adapting the one-man stage play written and performed by Chazz Palminteri. Palminteri had famously turned down large offers for the film rights unless he could play the central mob figure himself, a condition De Niro respected when he brought the project to the screen. The production aimed for authenticity, recreating the working-class Bronx neighborhoods of the 1960s with meticulous attention to detail. Although the story is set in New York, much of the filming actually took place in Astoria, Queens, where entire blocks were transformed to reflect the era.The film was produced during a period when crime dramas were enjoying renewed popularity following the success of films like Goodfellas. De Niro approached the material with a restrained directing style, focusing on character and atmosphere rather than spectacle. The cast included both experienced performers and young newcomers, with Lillo Brancato Jr. making his acting debut after being discovered by casting scouts while swimming at a public pool. Upon release, A Bronx Tale received strong critical praise and solid box office results, and over time it has grown into a widely respected cult favorite within the gangster film genre. Today it's often remembered as one of the more intimate and character-driven crime dramas of the 1990s.TRAILER GUY PLOT SYNOPSISIn a neighborhood where respect means everything… a young boy watches two very different worlds collide. On one side stands a hardworking father who believes in honesty and discipline. On the other… a powerful local figure who commands the streets and lives by his own rules. Caught between them, a boy grows up learning that loyalty, power, and family don't always come from the same place.A Bronx Tale — sometimes the toughest choices come from the people you admire most.FUN FACTSA Bronx Tale originated as a one-man stage show performed by Chazz Palminteri before being adapted into a film.Robert De Niro reportedly agreed to direct the film only if Palminteri played the role he created on stage. The movie is widely considered one of the most personal films De Niro has been involved with outside of acting. Many of the film's street scenes were shot in Astoria, Queens, which doubled for the Bronx of the 1960s.The movie has become famous for its “locked door test” scene, frequently quoted in pop culture discussions about relationships.Lillo Brancato Jr., who plays the young lead, had never acted before being cast in the film. The soundtrack features classic 1960s music, helping establish the film's nostalgic tone.Over the years, the film has been praised for its balanced portrayal of both family life and neighborhood influence. In 2016, the story was adapted into a Broadway musical produced by Robert De Niro. The movie remains a fan favorite among gangster film enthusiasts, often recommended alongside classics like Goodfellas and Donnie Brasco.Support the ShowIf you enjoy the show and would like to support us, we have a Patreon here.If you're listening on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, leaving us a 5-star review (and a short comment) really helps more people discover the show. Uchida and Imamura both show sympathy for their reprehensible lead characters, but do both of them make the audience feel that same sympathy? In honor of its upcoming 30th Anniversary next month, here is our newly remastered (with additional content) review of one of The Greatest Films Ever!“Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner….” – Neil McCauley, 1995And that's the apparent thesis for one of the most beloved films of the past thirty years spoken by living legend Robert DeNiro sitting across from fellow living legend Al Pacino.  Or is it really the main theme of the movie?  Maybe it's just something cool-sounding that a tough guy says but doesn't really follow through on….director Michael Mann examines that very question among so many others during this almost three hour crime epic focusing on the brewing conflict between two self-obsessed master tacticians on both sides of the law…and the women who love them….along with every one else whose lives they impact.  This STACKED cast also includes Val Kilmer, Diana Venora, Amy Brenneman, Tom Sizemore, Jon Voight, Wes Studi, Dennis Haysbert, Mykelti Williamson, Danny Trejo, and Ted Levine among SO many others.  Let's find out if The Action Really IS The Juice…..Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

On Episode 142 of The Film ‘89 Podcast, Neil, Skye and regular co-host, Jacob Rivera are celebrating the 30th anniversary of an all time classic from 1995, David Fincher's serial killer thriller, Seven, starring Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey. Based on an original screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker, Seven would go on to become one of the most successful films of 1995, a year replete with incredible films and this one in particular, is now considered a genre defining classic, notorious for it's bleak tone and THAT gut-punch ending. Featuring phenomenal performances from its leads, stunning cinematography, a wonderfully atmospheric score, and the very epitome of assured, precise direction from Fincher, Seven is surely one of the greatest films of all time and one worthy of the deluxe Film '89 treatment.

This week on Ron's Amazing Stories we continue our journey into the shadowy world of hard-boiled detectives. Last week we walked the mean streets with Philip Marlowe. This week, it's Part 2 — and we're talking about his rival in grit and wit, Sam Spade. We'll compare Marlowe and Spade, and look at the men behind them — authors Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. You'll also hear about Howard Duff, who brought Sam Spade to life on the radio. Then it's time for not one but two episodes from The Adventures of Sam Spade. First up, The Death and Company Caper (August 9, 1946). Then, The Wheel of Life Caper (July 11, 1948). What You Will Hear: How Chandler's Philip Marlowe and Hammett's Sam Spade stack up. The backstory of their creators: Hammett the ex-Pinkerton, Chandler the literary craftsman. The wit and voice of Howard Duff as Sam Spade. The Death and Company Caper (1946). The Wheel of Life Caper (1948). A few laughs and wisecracks along the way. Two detectives. Two styles. It's become something of a recurring theme on The Film ‘89 Podcast of late where the film being discussed has been described as “one of the big ones”, a film of such significance to the hosts that it fills them with an almost dread anticipation that they might not do it justice. No film fits that bill more than the one being discussed on Episode 138, an episode that Neil and Skye have been teasing and putting off for the longest time. That film is Michael Mann's epic tale of crime and obsession from 1995, starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro and an astonishing supporting cast, it is of course, Heat. An original idea of Mann's and based on the real life exploits of former Chicago Detective, Chuck Adamson, and bank robber, Neil McCauley, Heat is a sprawling crime saga where character development is as important as any other aspect of of the story being told, whilst also featuring some of the most technically astounding action ever committed to film. Not only was it the film that brought together arguably the two greatest actors alive at the time, but it also showcased a director at the very top of his creative game. It's been the guys' intention to cover some of 1995's best films this year for their 30th anniversary, and this is the second of three such episodes but there's every chance that they'll declare Heat not just the best film of that year, but one of the very best ever made.

Right at the height of his '90's powers, Oscar-winner Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing, Inside Man, Blackkklansman) decided to direct and co-adapt this powerful crime novel from Richard Price (creator of "The Wire") about a murder investigation in Brooklyn which goes much deeper than any one could have expected.  Among the prime suspects is Strike (Mekhi Phifer) who is a beleagured "clocker" which is another term for a middle-man drug pusher.  This racket is truly taking its toll on Strike who wants to find an escape.....and on his tail is the lead investigator of this murder, Detective Klein (Harvey Keitel).  Further complicating matters is that Strike's legit-working brother Victor (Isaiah Washington) becomes implicated and casting a shadow over all of this are the ruthless machinations of Strike's boss, the local druglord Rodney played by Delroy Lindo.  What results is a searing, unflinching crime drama which kind of got lost in the shuffle upon first release but has endured over the past thirty years as one of Lee's most accomplished films.  The stacked cast also includes John Turturro, Regina Taylor, Thomas Jefferson Byrd, and Keith David. Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

This is episode #700 of Ron's Amazing Stories! Can you believe it? Seven hundred episodes of time travel through tales, truth, and the occasional trench-coated raccoon. More on that in a bit. Today's journey starts deep in the heart of Secrets of Scotland Yard, the legendary radio drama that pulled back the curtain on some of Britain's most chilling cases. We'll share two classic episodes, each steeped in mystery, crime, and a touch of old-world British grit: Featured Stories: “The Man with the Violin: The Charles Peace Case” Meet Charles Peace—by day, a violinist and gentleman. By night, a rooftop-scaling, disguise-wearing, cold-blooded killer. His tale winds through 19th-century rooftops and courtrooms, ending, as many true crimes do, with a noose and a gasp. Bonus Ron Fact: Charles Peace inspired a 1949 British crime film, and every bit of his story—from obsession to execution—is documented history. “Just A Matchstick And A Duster” A peculiar little tale about two ordinary items and a rather extraordinary crime. Though no concrete history backs this one up, the mystery remains... and sometimes, that's the fun of it. Special Segment: Don's Astounding Stories Hits 700 In celebration of our 700th episode, we share the completely true and not-at-all embellished tale of Don's Astounding Stories, a podcast that defied logic, common sense, and multiple cease-and-desist letters to reach its own 700-episode milestone. From answering machines to AI co-hosts and spam busts, this satirical tribute reminds us all: you don't need polish to have persistence. You just need Don... and possibly a backup host made of kitchen appliances. Ron's Amazing Stories Is Sponsored by: Audible - You can get a free audiobook and a 30 day free trial at . Julian, Madeline, and Emilio are joined by Brendan McDonald, the producer of 'WTF with Marc Maron,' to finish off their cycle of New York City movies with a "Close-Up" on the works of legendary cinematographer Owen Roizman. A versatile visual talent ready for whatever came his way, Roizman burst out of the gate with William Friedkin's crime drama "The French Connection" (1971), in which he unforgettably and frantically photographed a plethora of New York locales. This showcase of his skills made him the perfect choice to shoot "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" (1974), the Joseph Sargent-directed, subway-set thriller infused with workplace humor that indelibly captures a timeless spirit of New York. But Roizman's aptitude also extended beyond the grimy streets and subway tunnels, and rose up to the broadcasting towers of Midtown Manhattan in "Network" (1976), the darkly prescient media satire written by Paddy Chayefsky and directed by Sidney Lumet. Blending their eyes for detail with their lived experience as New Yorkers, the group get into how Roizman's visual sense cemented the iconic status of these films, and why they stand the test of time even as they were made just a few years apart from one another. To hear Brendan discuss movies and other topics regularly, subscribe to the WTF bonus feed, "The Full Maron," for access to The Friday Show and other bonus material. On Ron's Amazing Stories we journey back to the captivating era of the Golden Age of Radio. This period was marked by the extraordinary talents of character actors who brought stories to life through the power of their voices. Last week, we explored the remarkable career of William Conrad and his significant contributions. This time we shift our focus to another versatile icon of that era—Dick Powell. Known for his dynamic range, Powell seamlessly transitioned from being a charming crooner in musical films to embodying the quintessential hard-boiled detective in radio dramas. His career spanned from the 1930s to the 1950s, leaving an indelible mark not just as an actor, but also as a singer, musician, producer, director, and even a studio head. In this episode we will talk about that career and play two stories from his radio series "Richard Diamond, Private Detective" and "Rogue's Gallery." Join us as we celebrate Dick Powell's legacy, listen to some of his iconic performances, and appreciate the lasting impact he had on radio storytelling. On Episode 131 of The Film ‘89 Podcast, Steve, Neil and Skye are joined by returning co-hosts, Bill Scurry and Matthias Van De Roest to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Academy Award winning crime thriller, The Usual Suspects (1995). Critically acclaimed upon its release and making a considerable worldwide box office haul on a meagre $6 million budget, it's amazing ensemble case, incredible Oscar winning script, precise editing and sharp direction would make it an endearing classic of the 1990s. Unfortunately the film doesn't get spoken about as frequently as it once did, likely due to the controversy that arose in the intervening years surrounding its director and one of its stars. But putting aside those issues and examining it purely as a work of collaborative art, The Usual Suspects remains one of the greatest crime dramas ever conceived and is a film that's endlessly rewarding and rewatchable.
