Prolific writer/producer/director Steven Knight has a habit of turning historical grit into must-watch television. From the streets of 1920s Birmingham in "Peaky Blinders" to the daring real-life SAS soldiers of "Rogue Heroes," Knight's work thrives on characters who push against the limits of their status. His latest series, "A Thousand Blows," is no different. Set in post-industrial revolution London, the show follows best friends Hezekiah and Alec as they get swept into the city's brutal underground boxing scene while crossing paths with local legends, and the notorious all-female gang, The Forty Elephants. The show stars Malachi Kirby, Erin Doherty, Stephen Graham, Jason Tobin, Francis Lovehall, and more. When Knight sat down with Bingeworthy, the busy writer was quick to admit that he doesn't watch much TV. "If anything, sometimes if I do watch stuff, I think, 'Oh God, this is so good. Why can't I just make it this simple?" he joked. That might explain why "A Thousand Blows" is anything but simple. Instead of focusing on one story, the show weaves together multiple narratives—including Hezekiah's rise in the ring, The Forty Elephants' criminal empire, and a quiet, burning revenge arc with Jason Tobin's Lao.

CHANGE OF HEART by Cristina LePort, MD, weaves an intricate tale that thrusts a former police detective, Kirk Miner, and an FBI newcomer, Charlotte Bloom, into a complex murder investigation masquerading as a suicide. The narrative unfolds in present-day New York City, merging elements of crime, mystery, and romance against the backdrop of Manhattan and Brooklyn. The story kicks off with the mysterious death of a young medical student, Amy Winter, whose demise is initially deemed a suicide until a deeper conspiracy unravels, involving a sinister organ donation chain. Kirk, struggling with his passion for criminal investigation and its toll on his family life, finds himself pulled deeper into the case, questioning his priorities and what he's willing to die for. Charlotte, on the other hand, grapples with her own secret—a life-threatening heart condition—as she navigates the perilous waters of cybercrime and mob conspiracy. As Kirk and Charlotte delve into the murky depths of this case, they encounter a cast of compelling characters, from the empathetic heart surgeon Dr. Zayne Wilder to the formidable Sicilian mobster Santo Montepulciano. Their journey through a tangled web of secrets, family drama, and forbidden love shatters crime drama clichés, offering a riveting exploration of love's power and the sacrifices made in its name. Dr. Cristina LePort's personal journey from a cardiologist to a novelist enriches her storytelling, making her books resonate deeply with readers fascinated by the ethical questions within the medical field. Her novels are not only page-turners but also provoke thoughtful consideration of the moral complexities faced by medical professionals. On Episode 131 of The Film ‘89 Podcast, Steve, Neil and Skye are joined by returning co-hosts, Bill Scurry and Matthias Van De Roest to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Academy Award winning crime thriller, The Usual Suspects (1995). Critically acclaimed upon its release and making a considerable worldwide box office haul on a meagre $6 million budget, it's amazing ensemble case, incredible Oscar winning script, precise editing and sharp direction would make it an endearing classic of the 1990s. Unfortunately the film doesn't get spoken about as frequently as it once did, likely due to the controversy that arose in the intervening years surrounding its director and one of its stars. But putting aside those issues and examining it purely as a work of collaborative art, The Usual Suspects remains one of the greatest crime dramas ever conceived and is a film that's endlessly rewarding and rewatchable.
Fantasy February is once again upon us and, this year we thought it would be fun to take a look at pulp heroes in a sort of urban-fantasy setting. So, to kick things off, we take a look at 1994's The Shadow. Starring Alec Baldwin, John Lone, Tim Curry, Ian McKellan, Johnathan Winters and Penelope Ann Miller the film, set in 1930s New York City, finds The Shadow (Alec Baldwin) as he battles his nemesis, Shiwan Khan (John Lone), who is building an atomic bomb. Listen in and find out what we thought!

Is the hype worth it, or did they serve us a steaming pile of "Chicken Shyte"? The story follows Gordon "Chicken Man" Williams, played by Kevin Hart, as he hustles his way into a high-stakes after-party that goes sideways when masked men pull off a million-dollar heist. Suspicions fly and deals are cut as Chicken Man works with Detective J.D. Hudson, played by Don Cheadle, to uncover who double-crossed whom. With Samuel L. Jackson also in the mix, the stakes go way beyond the dollar signs. It's not about the review; it's the conversation with the crew as we cut through the plot, dissect the real story versus what they served up, and drop our NSFW thoughts on everything from crime capers to how this heist flick stacks up in the era of the 'Black Mecca.' Don't miss our take on if this one's a knockout or just a bunch of "Chicken Shyte."
