In this gripping episode of Crime Time, Inc., we delve into the harrowing events of the Jonestown Massacre, where over 900 people, including more than 300 children, perished under the influence of cult leader Jim Jones. The episode begins by exploring Jones's early life marked by a disturbing fascination with death and his rise to religious leadership, characterized by charisma and a message of social justice. We then trace the evolution of his teachings from traditional Christianity to apostolic socialism, appealing to marginalized followers seeking a sense of belonging and purpose. As Jones's power grew, so did his manipulation tactics, leading to the establishment of Jonestown in Guyana, a so-called utopia that quickly turned into a nightmare of hard labor, communal living, and psychological abuse. The episode provides chilling details of life inside Jonestown, including suicide drills known as 'white nights' and the isolation imposed on followers. The situation came to a head with the visit of Congressman Leo Ryan in November 1978, which led to a violent ambush at a nearby airstrip and Ryan's subsequent death. This marked the beginning of the end, culminating in the mass suicide orchestrated by Jones, immortalized in the infamous 'death tape.' The episode examines the psychological manipulation that led to such a tragic end and discusses various conspiracy theories surrounding the event. We also hear the harrowing stories of survivors like Leslie Wilson and Vernon Gosney, who provide crucial insights into the psychological hold Jones had over his followers. The episode concludes with a reflection on the Jonestown Massacre's impact on society's understanding of cults, the importance of critical thinking, and the need to safeguard individual autonomy. This episode features Leslie Wilson, a passionate and seasoned hospitality professional looking to educate and excite beginning wine enthusiasts as they start their journey into learning, loving, and understanding the world of wine. We talk about why she loves learning about wine and translating it in a way that makes it less intimidating for people who want to dive into tastings and understand more about wine. She started in the industry working part-time on weekends at a private City Club in Roswell, GA and some Sundays at the owner's vineyard in Dahlonega, GA (Wolf Mountain Vineyards). That opportunity then turned into a full-time job managing events and their fine dining restaurant all while sparking more interest in the world of wine. We explore how wine and hospitality intertwines and also why she later transitioned to working as a bartender for almost a decade before making a return to restaurants currently serving at The Optimist in Atlanta for the past five years. It's this current role that has played an integral part of supporting her pursuit of wine education, and the restaurant even paid for her to take the Level 1 Sommelier exam. She is now teaching a weekly wine class to help the staff understand the wines on their list - so I ask her to suggest wines to me based on "what I currently drink" as a way to showcase her skills in helping people explore just outside their comfort zones.
