I drank rye whiskey in the spiritual home of American rye whiskey, the Monongahela Valley, in the cradle of the Whiskey Rebellion, Washington, PA. I tell you about how the rebellion happened, and how it ended, and how rye whiskey came to southwestern PA. Rye whiskey historian Sam Komlenic joined me for a talk on rye whiskey at Liberty Pole Spirits, and I interviewed Liberty Pole founder Jim Hough.  Sam and I also visited the revived Pittsburgh Brewing, and their Iron City Distilling facility, and talked to distiller Matt Strickland. (Of course we sampled some whiskey!) Then we went to Ponfeigh Distilling in Somerset, where they're just getting started.  I filled a few shopping bags at the Delallo Italian Marketplace in Jeannette, PA and then hit three good eats places in Washington: Shorty's Lunch, Osso's Pizza, and Al'an Ruben's. Then Sam and his wife Amy went along with me to visit covered bridges...but that didn't work out so well! Great trip to southwest PA and the Mon Valley, the heart of Pennsylvania rye whiskey! This week on The Whiskey Trip Podcast, Big Chief takes you on a ride to Washington, Pennsylvania and introduces listeners to Liberty Pole Spirits. He chats with Founder and Owner, Jim Hough. Jim and Big Chief discuss The Whiskey Rebellion of 1794 that pitted farmers and distillers of Western Pennsylvania against George Washington and a new nation. Jim shares how his craft distillery takes you back to those meeting houses and taverns of the rebellion and how they serve tavern-style food and cocktails made from their Monongahela Rye Whiskey. They start the show with a dram of Liberty Pole Wheated Bourbon that the big man describes as a honey bun in a glass. They then move on to the Monongahela Rye with a mash-bill of 61% Rye, 13% Red Winter Wheat, 13% Rye Malt and 13% Malted Barley to finish the first half. For Big Chief, it brings back memories of ribbon candy at his grandmother's house. In the second half these two pour a glass of Peated Bourbon. This unique and rare mash-bill is what this show is all about - finding a whiskey from a craft distillery that will dazzle the big man's palate. The guys finish the show with a splash of Bourbon Cream. Perfect in the morning with coffee or in the evening to pour over some cake to give it a kick. This ride on The Whiskey Trip showcases whiskey history and how it helped shape our nation. Cheers!

In this episode, I interviews Jim from Liberty Pole Spirits, a family-owned craft whiskey distillery in Pennsylvania.  Jim discusses how Liberty Pole started as a hobby distillery, with him operating a 15-gallon backyard copper still. His two sons, who were science kids, joined him in the hobby. When Jim was winding down his career and not enjoying it anymore, he saw the rise of craft distilling and convinced his wife to start a distillery as a part-time operation. Eventually, his sons left their engineering careers to join the family business. We discuss the significance of the Whiskey Rebellion in American history and the potential for a musical about it. We also talk about Liberty Pole's focus on pot-distilled whiskey and their recent expansion, including the construction of a rickhouse with a 3,600 barrel capacity. Jim shares that Liberty Pole produces a variety of whiskeys, including bourbon, rye, corn whiskey, and peated bourbon and rye. They use a unique mash bill for their bourbon, incorporating bloody butcher corn, a non-GMO heirloom varietal. They also experiment with different finishes, such as rum and sherry barrels. The conversation shifts to the distillery's cocktail program, which has been instrumental in gaining fans and ambassadors for their whiskey. Jim emphasizes the importance of offering a unique experience to visitors, including tours, tastings, and a themed tasting room cocktail bar.

Friends, family and new fans joined the celebration and filled their new campus to capacity. It was an amazing experience to be part of the festivities and tour this state of the art distillery. The crowned jewel is the largest rickhouse in all of Pennsylvania. This expansive structure provides so much room now to fill and age barrels. The tasting room and bottle shop are full of history which is befitting to the distilled spirits that are being produced. It's a comfortable space to sit, relax, sip and enjoy the sights, sounds and the conversations all around. The cocktails are amazing. A perfect balanced and well rounded compliment to the base whiskey being used. We got see the production space from the seating area overlooking the distillery itself. Episode 31 featured Jim and there you can learn about the history and the humble beginnings of Liberty Pole. This episode provides a glimpse into the excitement of opening day, the experiences leading up to it and some never told stories about the beginning of the distillery. Liberty Pole Spirits - also known as Mingo Creek Distillery - is producing traditional-style bourbons and ryes with the spirit of the Whiskey Rebellion in its veins. Centered around the idea of a liberty pole, the only thing associated with the Rebellion that wasn't already copyrighted, according to founder Jim Hough. Liberty Poles are symbols of dissent, freedom, and independence, dating back at least to the assassination of Julius Caesar. They were used heavily during revolutions and rebellions throughout the subsequent centuries, including the refusal to pay Hamilton's Whiskey Excise in the 1790s.  Liberty Pole Spirits leans heavily into the history of the Rebellion and of what is now Washington County, PA (the name, understandably, came later) while incorporating some new themes into their whiskies (peat, anyone?) Between the Bassitt Town whiskey, aged as long as it took to get from Mingo Creek to Pittsburgh (about 12 hours by horse), peated and unpeated bourbons and ryes, and a healthy dose of history, Liberty Pole pays homage to the stories of those who came before.  Plus, the whiskies are pretty damn good, too.  _________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so! Only 5 Spots Remain in the Barrel Club. If you've taken part in a part in a protest recently, perhaps you carried a sign, waved a flag, or worn a special hat. But if you had grievances in the American Revolution or early Republic, you might have helped raise a Liberty Pole. Now, you may ask yourself, what good is a large wooden pole gonna do about my high taxes? And you may ask yourself, do I really want to lift this heavy thing? Turns out, as the days went by in the late eighteenth century, many Americans thought Liberty Poles were the perfect way to signal their collective displeasure and rally their countrymen against some perceived wrong. And what one group could put up, another could most assuredly pull down. On today's episode, we'll hear from Dr. Shira Lurie, an expert on these strange objects and the meaning they held for Americans in the founding generation. Americans used Liberty Poles to argue over a citizen's role in a republic. And what was a symbol of liberty to some, was an icon of tyranny to others. Lurie is an Assistant Professor of History at St. Mary's University in Nova Scotia. She's the author an article recently published in the Journal of the Early American Republic entitled, “Liberty Poles and the Fight for Popular Politics in the Early Republic.” Besides Liberty Poles, Lurie tells us how she tries to reach many different audiences as a historian, and what it's like to teach American history in both Canada and the United States. About our Guest: Shira Lurie, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of History at St. Mary's University. Tune in to hear our first episode with a sponsor and a guest! Big thanks to Liberty Pole for supporting Po It Up and letting us try out some of their lineup.

A shorter episode for yinz this time. Well let’s be real, any length would be shorter than the last one (That’s what she said??) We got our first podcast early access sample. This is not on the shelves yet and we could be happier to be the first to review this sample. We also talk about our trip to Liberty Pole with the Pittsburgh Whiskey Friends. Lastly we discuss the new Patreon page we started for the show. Do we have a great show for you today! So great that we didn’t want to split it up into two episodes. So sit back, relax and have a dram or two for these next two hours. We are joined by none other than the creator of Pittsburgh Whiskey Friends Mr. Aaron Hajduk. He helps us review Liberty Pole’s Rye Whiskey. Then Aaron opens up his Box o’ Fun for us. 8 different whiskey samples for us to try on the show. Hilarity ensues as he forces us to question everything we think we know about whiskey. Please be sure to check out out on social media and rate and review the show in iTunes!

When the Pittsburgh Whiskey Friends invited us to come to their city and lead a benefit tasting in honor of the 11 people killed in the October 27, 2018 mass shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue, we didn't hesitate. This episode was recorded at the tasting on November 26, 2018 in Pittsburgh, with all of the proceeds going to benefit the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) in memory of the Tree of Life shooting victims. Dad's Hat, Powers, Amrut importer Raj Sabharwal, and Liberty Pole Spirits donated the whiskies for the evening, and Christian Kahle won a raffle for one of the spots on our tasting panel. He joined Bobby Long and Scott Ritenbaugh from the Pittsburgh Whiskey Friends and public broadcasting personality Rick Sebak to taste the Dad's Hat Pre-Prohibition Style Pennsylvania Rye, Powers Three Swallow, Amrut Fusion, and Liberty Pole's Peated Bourbon.
