Along with our guest Matt Lysin from Cleveland On The Rocks, we talk through the moments that stick: the questions fans ask when they finally get face time with the person behind the bourbon, the stories people share about starting with 1792, and why Ohio might be one of the loudest bourbon states in the country.  We also get technical in a way that actually helps you drink smarter. Ross explains how he thinks about blending for consistency, why “degree of maturation” can matter more than a simple age number, and how open air rickhouses and warehouse placement shape flavor. We dig into the role of 1792 Small Batch as the flagship expression, plus how releases like Bottled In Bond, Full Proof, Single Barrel, and the 1792 12 Year come together with a bigger team than most people realize.  After the call, we bring it back to the glass with a live Barrel Bottle Breakdown of 1792 Sweet Wheat. If you love wheated bourbon, you'll want our tasting notes, the proof debate, and the final score. We even swap real-world tips for traveling with whiskey so your best bottles survive baggage handling.  If you're into bourbon, Barton 1792, Sazerac brands, barrel picks, or tasting notes you can actually use, hit play, then subscribe, share this with a bourbon friend, and leave us a five-star review on Apple Podcasts. Happy New Year from The Bourbon Road! Jim and Todd ring in the New Year at the Bourbon Road bar with one final sample show to close out 2025. With the "Whiskey of the Year" episode just around the corner, the hosts are clearing the decks and diving into four distinct and intriguing pours that range from experimental finishes to classic Kentucky profiles. It's a diverse lineup that takes their palates on a journey from the coast of France to the American Southwest. The tasting begins with a luxurious offering from Bardstown Bourbon Company's Distillery Collection: the Normandy Calvados Brandy Barrel Finish. This blend of 12 and 13-year-old Indiana bourbons was finished for 28 months in apple brandy casks and an additional four months in toasted oak. Clocking in at 104.2 proof, it delivers a "flavor explosion" of honey crisp apple, vanilla cream, puff pastry, and a rich, compote-like texture that leaves the hosts searching for descriptors like "candle nose" and "apple pie." Next, they take a sharp turn to Oxnard, California, for Sespe Creek Distillery's Warbringer, a Mesquite Smoked Southwest Bourbon. This 98-proof experimental pour features mesquite-smoked corn and malted rye, resulting in a savory, polarizing profile. Todd and Jim pick up notes of "burnt all-beef hot dogs," barbecue smoke, and pumpernickel, describing it as a "smoky beast" that definitely ruffles some feathers but delivers on its promise of uniqueness. Returning to the Bluegrass State, the hosts sample the inaugural release from Jackson Purchase Distillery: the Full Proof. Produced in Hickman, Kentucky, by Master Distiller Craig Beam and Assistant Master Distiller Terry Ballard, this 4-year-old bourbon (roughly 117.8 proof) punches above its age class. It offers a definitive, classic bourbon profile with notes of buttery caramel, brown sugar, and a viscous, oily mouthfeel that Jim calls the "Wikipedia picture of bourbon." Finally, they explore the New Riff High Note Confluence Project Volume 1, a 100% Wheat Whiskey. This 6-year-old expression uses a complex mash bill of Red Turkey Wheat and various malted wheats. At cask strength, it surprises the table with a dark, complex profile featuring notes of cotton candy, mint tea, medicinal cherry, and a "Good & Plenty" black licorice finish that showcases the depth of heirloom grains. The episode wraps up with a "Winner Winner Chicken Dinner" segment where Jim and Todd attempt to rank these four very different whiskeys. Will they lock stock on their favorites, or will the polarizing pours divide the room? Tune in to find out and get ready for the 2025 Whiskey of the Year show coming next week! Send us a textThe list dropped and the takes are hot. We kick things off with the new Whiskey Advocate Top 20—Elijah Craig A925 at the top, Oban 15 sliding in at number two, and a well-earned spotlight on Maker's Mark Cellar Aged—then we turn the conversation toward a bottle that always hit the spot: Weller Full Proof. If you've ever wondered how proof and filtration change a bourbon's soul, this is your pour.We walk through the Weller family by color and proof and then slow down on the blue label. Non-chill filtered at 114, Full Proof carries a dessert-like nose—brown sugar, caramelized wood, a hint of cinnamon—before shifting into an oak-driven, slightly drying finish with a layered spice profile. One of us wants the nose's sugar to stretch longer; the other leans into the structure, texture, and tannin that make it a weeder with backbone. Along the way, we unpack why chill filtering matters, what happens when you leave the oils in, and how a splash of water can coax sweetness forward without muting character.Price and access are part of the story. At $70 for a good store pick, Full Proof feels like a win; at inflated tags or secondary levels, the value case gets tougher. We get practical about finding bottles—build relationships, learn the color code, and time your visits—and we tip the cap to history, tracing Weller's roots through Stitzel-Weller to the Pappy mash philosophy. The bigger theme is clear: quality is everywhere, and the right bottle depends on your proof tolerance and palate goals. If bold, textured wheaters are your lane, blue might be your new weeknight flex. If you want softer sweetness, the 12 Year or Special Reserve may hit just right. Pour something you love, then press play and taste along with us. Enjoyed the breakdown? It seems like just yesterday that we were tasting and reviewing the 100 proof version of Sazerac Rye which "was" the newest permanent edition to the Saz lineup. However, that all changed a couple weeks ago when Sazerac Full Proof Rye made its debut. This new and permanent offering from Buffalo Trace comes in at 125 proof and is said to be comprised of barrels that are aging in some of the best parts of the rickhouses. Join us for this short as we taste and review this new offering. In this episode, Anthony blinds the fellas with another pour that sparks some good discussion. 90, 100, and now 125 proof? What's missing? In this sermon drawn from 1 Timothy 4:6–16, we're reminded that preaching the gospel isn't limited to the pulpit — it's a daily call to live out your ministry wherever you are. You'll discover how carnality can cost you your destiny, why your ministry is tied to your purpose, and how using your gifts is the starting point for uncovering what God has called you to do. From 1 Peter 4:10–11 to John 17:4, this message challenges every believer to serve boldly, glorify God by finishing their assignment, and live in a way that leaves no regrets when Jesus returns.

The facility, dating back to 1879, features original equipment from the 1940s alongside modern production methods—all focused on creating exceptional spirits rather than entertaining tourists. As Cornelissen explains, "It's not about show. It's all about making bourbon."Cornelissen's unexpected journey to master distiller began with dreams of cereal production before a pivotal microbiology course revealed the fascinating world of fermentation. His technical education at MGP provided invaluable experience with countless variations in mash bills and distillation techniques. Now at Barton, he merges scientific precision with deep respect for Kentucky's distilling heritage. The conversation demystifies several bourbon-making secrets, from 1792's distinctive high-rye mash bill and banana-forward yeast strain to the dramatic effects of barrel positioning within rickhouses. Particularly fascinating is Cornelison's detailed explanation of small batch blending—a process requiring meticulous barrel selection to maintain consistent flavor profiles despite natural variations in aging. The coveted Sweet Wheat expression earns special attention, with Cornelissen confirming their willingness to reduce release sizes rather than compromise on quality.Beyond production techniques, Cornelissen offers refreshing honesty about what a master distiller's job actually entails. Far from the romanticized image of simply tasting whiskey all day, his role demands technical expertise, leadership skills, and constant problem-solving across every aspect of operations.Discover the science, history, and passion behind one of Ken Add for SOFL If You Have GohstsSupport the showhttps://www.scotchybourbonboys.com The Scotchy bourbon Boys are #3 in Feedspots Top 60 whiskey podcasts in the world https://podcast.feedspot.com/whiskey_podcasts/

This episode uncovers the remarkable transformation that happens when a quality wheated bourbon sits open for a year, developing complex layers of flavor that weren't present upon first pour. The Barton 1792 Distillery, established in 1879 by Thomas Moore, continues its tradition of excellence with their Sweet Wheat expression. At 91.2 proof, this bourbon replaces the traditional rye grain with wheat for a softer, more approachable profile while maintaining the distillery's signature character. Our side-by-side analysis reveals how oxygen exposure dramatically enhances this whiskey's profile over time. Our freshly-opened 2025 bottle immediately impressed with its long legs in the glass and a beautiful body that coated every corner of the mouth. The nose offered toasted notes with prominent vanilla, reminiscent of Brach's candy chews, eventually developing subtle cherry hints. On the palate, it delivered a remarkable cherry transition that one taster described as a "cherry flavored cigar" with a lengthy finish that earned it high marks in our rating system.Meanwhile, the 2023 bottle that had breathed for a year showed the magic that happens with patience. Its nose had transformed to showcase significant caramel development, while the taste featured an intense "momentary butterscotch" explosion that transitioned beautifully to cherry notes. Though its finish was shorter than the fresh bottle, its evolved complexity earned it equal overall points through different strengths.Whether you're new to wheated bourbons or a seasoned enthusiast, this episode offers valuable insights into how these spirits develop over time. What follows is a genuine, unfiltered evaluation based purely on taste preferences rather than reputation or price tag."Brown sugar, cinnamon bun, and caramel" notes dominate the conversation as they work through uniquely color-coded samples, discovering significant flavor differences despite all expressions sharing the same wheated bourbon DNA. Super Nash and Tiny's palates pick up distinctive profiles ranging from "pure caramel" to "candy apple with cinnamon," highlighting how aging conditions and proof points transform Buffalo Trace's beloved distillate. When the bottles are finally revealed, William LaRue Weller unanimously claims first place, confirming its reputation as an exceptional limited release. However, several rankings prove genuinely surprising, particularly the performance of Weller CYPB and Full Proof compared to the highly allocated Weller 12 Year. These results challenge conventional wisdom about which Weller expressions truly deliver the best drinking experience.Between passionate disagreements about rankings and hilarious confusion during the reveal, the tasting demonstrates why blind evaluation remains the ultimate test of quality. This week on The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief pulls no punches as he sits down with the straight-shooting Brandon Carlton—the man behind Brewtally Honest Bourbon. A voice unafraid to call it like he tastes it, Brandon brings his raw enthusiasm and no-nonsense style to a tasting session that dives deep into the powerhouse that is the 1792 lineup. From the approachable sweetness of 1792 Small Batch, to the bold, unapologetic fire of Full Proof, and the structured depth of Bottled-in-Bond, these two bourbon-loving renegades tear into the flavors, the legacy, and the soul behind one of Barton's finest creations. But this episode's more than tasting notes and mash bills. Brandon shares the roots of his brutally honest brand, the rise of a community built on trust and truth, and what it means to stay real in a world that's too often watered down. This is bourbon with backbone. This is storytelling with soul. And if you think you've tasted 1792 before—think again. Buckle up, pour heavy, and get ready for a wild ride through the heart of Kentucky flavor. Follow @BrewtallyHonestBourbon and @TheWhiskeyTrip for giveaways, laughs, and a behind-the-scenes look at the whiskey world without the filters. This isn't just a podcast—it's a damn Whiskey Trip.
