Cyberpunk is a cool genre we have never covered exclusively on a Quackcast before. But what IS cyberpunk? It's a subset of SciFi, it's usually near future, involves body modifications, grittiness, street level computer use, techno body modification, and hacking. At least that's the way it started. Formative influences on the cyberpunk genre were the first Tron movie, Bladerunner, and Escape from New York. Tron showed us what cyberspace was, while Bladerunner and Escape from New York gave us gritty near future dystopias with cool tech, modified humans, and most importantly the punk aesthetic which was the gritty street youth fashion of the late 70s and early 80s. Punks plus computers signalled a more universal use of the new technology of computers in the near future world especially as imagined by Willian Gibson with his novel Neuromancer. There were other influential cyberpunk writers like Neal Stephenson with SnowCrash and many more. My fave was Manga creator Masamune Shirow with his books like Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed and more which tackle subjects like trans-humanisim as humans evolve with technology and then INTO technology itself. In the late 80s and early 90s cyberpunk was very influential in anime with the likes of the Ghost in the Shell movie, Bubblegum crisis, AD police, and the amazing milestone that is Akira! A very formative game in the world of cyberpunk was the RPG Shadowrun, which was near future urban fantasy plus cyberpunk in all its pure glory. These days we have the computer game Cyberpunk 2020, but it's an extremely derivative and pale shadow of what had gone before it, it functions as a sort of a retro “greatest hits” of the genre, but it's a good intro into it and that goes for the Netflix anime of the same name. There were various unrelated genres inspired by cyberpunk- Steampunk, Dieselpunk, and the later dubious genres raypunk and atompunk which are just rebranded early standard SciFi. What is your fave example of cyberpunk? Do you know what cyberpunk is? When did you first come to cyberpunk? This week Gunwallace gave us a theme inspired by The Return of Jake Sunrise - A desolate red dirt desert, a wind whistles through and carries with it a torrent of sound and energy, flooding in like a sudden rainstorm, bringing with it life, colour, and revitalisation! The desert blooms. Have you ever wondered what our world would look like if significant historical events had taken a different turn? That's the fascinating premise we explore on this episode of Dispatch Ajax, starting with Nathaniel Hawthorne's whimsical "P's Correspondence" and moving on to Castillo Holford's visionary "Aristopia." Imagine a North America founded on gold or a timeline where historical figures live on to shape the world in unforeseen ways. We also delve into Sir John Squire's anthology "If it had Happened Otherwise," with speculative essays from luminaries like Winston Churchill, inviting you to ruminate on the absurdities and profound possibilities of alternate histories.Harry Turtledove fans, rejoice! We dedicate a segment to his intricate series, from "American Empire" to "Settling Accounts," where the CSA's trajectory parallels post-WWI Germany. What would have happened if the CSA had bought Cuba or if a socialist uprising had transformed South Carolina? We also highlight other pivotal works, like "The Years of Rice and Salt," where Europe's depopulation by the Black Death leads to an entirely different global power structure. From the CSA's nationalist movements to a reimagined Second Mexican War, Turtledove's alternate timelines provide a rich tapestry of what-ifs.To round things off, we journey through other imaginative narratives such as "The Two Georges" and "The Plot Against America," examining worlds where the American Revolution never occurred or Lindbergh defeated FDR. We explore provocative scenarios where Homo sapiens never reached the Americas in Turtledove's "A Different Flesh," and the steampunk marvels of "The Difference Engine." Whether it's atomic punk, diesel punk, or the bizarre yet intriguing idea of populating the Mississippi with hippos in "American Hippo," this episode promises a thought-provoking and entertaining exploration of alternate histories and their creative potential. Tune in, and let's reimagine history together!

Saul was persuing the internet looking at Steam Punk RPGs and stumbled across Carbon Grey a Diesel Punk RPG by Magnetic Press. It uses a slightly tweaked version of the Classic Star Wars D6 system. Its quick and easy to understand and play. That Star Wars D6 system has always been liked for its playablity and fun. Carbon Grey is set in a alternate world where the 1st Kaiser is saved by a shepard that was struck by a meteorite which gets lodged in his chest and games super powers. The Kaiser makes him his bodyguard. That shepard's children hand super powers though not as powerful as their father. They are all female and are called the Sisters Grey. The KaIser uses the Sisters as shock troops and special forces unit and they kick ass. With the Sisters Grey the Kaiser is able to form an empire that lasts hundred years. Early in the 20th Century some countries revolt and a war ensues. This is the setting for Carbon Grey. It was based on a set of comic books which are now available as graphic novels. Also published by Magnetic Press. Age of Steel also calls itself a Diesel Punk game. Its setting is also around the 1920's in a very Earth like world called Neres. But where Mechs are utilized in much of the world. From mechs that are used to load heavy equipment to mechs made for war. It is also uses a D6 dice pool system but it is unique to this system. You get to throw as many D6s as your attribute and your skill dictates what you need to roll for a success. Seems super simple and easy to understand. As Always Thank You All for Listening.

Anthropomorphe Tiere. Also Tiere, die uns Menschen ähneln. Diese sprechenden auf 2 Beinen laufenden und meist auch Kleidung tragenden Wesen machen halt immer erstmal Lust auf das Spieleuniversum, welches wir auch mit hoffnungsvollem Blick betreten. Das Metroidvania F.I.S.T.

Continuing the conversation recorded on December 17th, 2020: Jason Cousineau, Superfan Melissa From Missouri, and Eric Fisk discuss the Wall Street Journal opinion piece by Joseph Epstein - "Is There a Doctor in the White House? Not if You Need an M.D." Jay, Melissa, and Eric also converse about how sexism is still a problem in the second decade of the 21st Century, from the workplace to cyberspace. Including and especially in the realms of Steampunk and Dieselpunk. The conversation concludes with an exploration of a new concept called "Laundered Guilt." Why do so many people in modern society who seem to have everything they could ever want and need to have a tendency to take extreme action to soothe their nagging guilt? And guilt for what? In this Quackcast we chat about the categorisation of work by specific genres and how it makes it easier to promote your work to people, while for fans it makes it easier to find what you're into, but it can also be a bad thing when people categorise too specifically and narrow their audience to nothing or just pointlessly confuse the crap out of people. I came to this topic because I saw a post on Facebook which was very badly explaining “Steampunk” and “Dieselpunk” while introducing the two utterly superfluous sub-genre names of “Ray-punk” and Atom-punk“. Let me explain… First there was ”Cyberpunk“. A sub-genre of SciFi that really started in the early 1980s, famously championed by William Gibson among others. The ”punk“ suffix originally referred to it's gritty nature and the fact that it focussed on young people and the technology of the streets. The characters also wore the punk fashions popular in the early 1980s, it tended to feature cybernetic body modification and focus heavily on computers and ”cyberspace“. It was largely inspired by things like Blade Runner and Tron. Obviously there was a need for this sub-genre categorisation because nothing like it had really existed before. ”Steampunk“ is mainly 19th century but can be set at any time. Steam and clockwork are the basis for all technology, the aesthetic is usually based in the 19th century with modern touches. It takes some inspiration from the works of Jules Verne and HG Wells. Again, this was a totally new style and needed a name. ”Dieselpunk“ is from about 1900 onwards and encompasses the time of the birth of the internal combustion engine which is used as a basis for high technology, just like Steampunk does with steam. Movies like Mad Max 2 among others can be seen as inspiration. Once again it was a new style. Steampunk and Dieselpunk stole the style of their names from cyberpunk. They use ”punk“ to refer to the unusual hybrid nature of being pre-hightech SciFi as well as the fact they often include punk type fashions and body augmentation which was a popular feature in Cyberpunk. Then we have ”Atom-punk“ and ”Ray-punk“, both of which are describe work that is already fully encompassed by conventional mainstream SciFi from the 1920s onwards. ALL Scifi including fantasy space Operas like Star Wars can be included in these (Apart from the original aforementioned ”punk“ styles). I feel that this type of categorisation is very, very pretentious, ignorant and counter-productive: since it dilutes and trivialises the ”punk" brand; imagines it does something novel while ignoring all the millions of works on the same theme; and confuses audiences precisely because it IS so dilute and superfluous. Dieselpunk and Steampunk by contrast are weird, they don't fit at all with normal SciFi and so need to be described in an unusual way. Our guest Emma Clare offers up a spirited defence, so it's not all one sided and I don't have it all my own way on this! Listen to the Quackcast to see what she says. This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to The Adventures of Tildie and Chewie. We're greeted by the imposing strains of the Imperial march on heavy bass guitar… before we're rocketed off into a pink heavenly dream cloud filled with rainbows and Teletubbies!
