The film follows Ghost Dog, a hitman who lives by the ancient code of the samurai as outlined in the book "Hagakure." The movie explores themes of loyalty, honor, and the clash between old-world values and modern realities. It's a thoughtful, meditative approach to the crime genre that uses the way of the samurai to delve into existential questions.Samurai Jack, created by Genndy Tartakovsky, is an animated series that follows a samurai prince who wields a magical sword in his relentless quest to defeat the shape-shifting demon Aku. Known for its visual style that blends Eastern and Western aesthetics, the show is celebrated for its storytelling, art direction, and the way it addresses themes of good versus evil. It's not only entertaining for kids but also captivates adults with its depth and creativity.Whether you're fascinated by the legendary swords that have defined heroes and villains alike, drawn to the philosophical musings of a modern-day samurai, or a fan of animated adventures that span time and space, today's episode promises sharp insights and cutting-edge entertainment. Sam and the remnants of the Great Ranging find respite at Craster's Keep. However, their host isn't overflowing with generosity. Hunger and frustration eventually bubble over into mutiny. Sam finds himself without his friends but with two dependents, while the Others are set to enter stage right at any moment. Mackelly and Simon pack the diaper bag.Chapter Review:Samwell Tarly attends to the ailing ranger Bannen, while he and many of the other Night's Watch brothers shelter in Craster's Keep. Craster gives them only a weak onion soup for sustenance, while Craster dines on a sausage. Sam eventually goes outside, where some of his brothers call him “Slayer” in a mocking reference to his claim to have killed an Other. While Sam chats with Grenn, Lord Commander Mormont arrives and pulls Sam aside.Sam had told the Lord Commander about how he killed an Other with a dragonglass dagger. Mormont realizes that the Night's Watch has forgotten their true purpose over the thousands of years. You don't build a 700 foot wall to keep wildlings out. Unfortunately, they only have a few dragonglass weapons available to them. Most of the cache Jon found was left on the Fist during the fight with the wights.Craster emerges from the hall with news that his daughter-wife Gilly has given him a boy. Later, Mormont announces they're leaving in the morning. During a feast provided by Craster, using the dead horses of the Night's Watch, a mutiny transpires. Craster and Mormont are killed. Sam and the remnants of the Great Ranging are high-tailing it back to the wall. They've been decimated by the Others and wights. Sam eventually falls behind, but with a dragonglass dagger he manages to kill a White Walker. Mackelly and Simon walk way less than a mile in his shoes.Chapter Review:Sam Tarly is sobbing with tiredness, pain, and cold. The reader, with annoyance at Sam's bleating. But he has had it rough. He was rudely awaken by three blasts of the Night's Watch horn. Said a cheery hello to his incontinent would-be assassin Chett. Failed in his mission to release ravens with the increasingly dire news of how the battle progressed between the Great Ranging and the army of Others that overwhelmed them. And finally fled on horseback. That didn't last. Lord Commander Mormont gathered the remnants together, enforced a circle of torch bearers to keep pursuit by the undead at bay, and made the able-bodied dismount in favor of the injured and supplies. Finally, he points them in the direction of the Wall.Sam collapses. He can go no further. Grenn cannot move him, but Small Paul carries him for a while - on the promise of a talking raven. The trio fall outside the ring of torches and a White Walker upon an undead horse attacks them. Paul succumbs but his weight pulls the sword from the Other's grip. Sam gropes for a weapon and finds the dragonglass dagger. Jon and Qhorin cannot escape the pursuing wildlings. The Halfhand orders Jon to yield to the wildlings, to infiltrate, and to never forget his vows. Jon proves his loyalty by killing Qhorin, with considerable help from Ghost. Simon and Mackelly mourn his passing.Chapter Review:Qhorin Halfhand has sent Ebben on ahead with the fastest horse, and Stonesnake by foot separately, with news for Lord Commander Mormont of what Jon saw and how he saw it. The “old powers are awaking." Ebben suggests Jon Snow should go, as the youngest, but the Halfhand has a different plan for Snow. The situation seems hopeless. On the next episode of Talkin' Thrones, Professor Pat & Dom "The Movie Nerd" examine the fourth episode of Season 3 of this hit show, entitled "And Now His Watch is Ended." Directed by Alex Graves and written by David Benioff & DB Weiss, this episode is a peculiar beast, because it has some very iconic and amazingly well done sequences, in contrast to the vast majority of the plot being very minimalistic and slow paced. The phrase itself is in reference to whenever a brother of the Night's Watch dies. North of the Wall, the tension finally reaches the breaking point with the starving brothers murdering Craster and Lord Commander Mormont, forcing Sam & Gilly to go on the run. Arya meets Beric Dondarrion, the leader of the Brotherhood without banners, who challenges the Hound to trial by combat. Theon finds himself right back where he started, while Bran continues to dream. Jaime ruminates about what life is like without his greatest assett. Daenerys achieves her first true victory as a conqueror by murdering the slavemasters and gaining the ultimate alliance of the Unsullied. In King's Landing, more meddling is afoot as Varys makes his move against Littlefinger, while Margaery proposes marriage ideas to Sansa. It's an interesting episode, but another memorable one. Sam has found a number of maps that will come in useful for the planned great ranging of the Night's Watch. Lord Commander Mormont shares maester Aemon's past with Jon. Simon and Mackelly wrap up warm and consider the prospects. Chapter Review: Jon finds Sam in the Castle Black library surrounded by books and parchments. Sam has been gone all night and missed breakfast. He was sent for maps of the North, but was swept away by the feast of knowledge he found. Jon's unimpressed. They head to Lord Commander Mormont's rooms. Jeor is in dispute with the acting first-ranger Thoren Smallwood, who believes that the Lord Commander should stay home. Mormont pulls rank and dismisses Thornwood. He's also disappointed by the age and content of the maps. Sam is terrified of the commander, but needs to find a bit of courage as he'll be joining the great ranging. Mormont talks Jon through maester Aemon's family history, in the hopes that the aging maester's example of loyalty to his vows, in the face of overwhelming temptations, will resonate with Jon. Jon gets a pardon and a shiny new sword from Jeor Mormont. His buddies are all excited but Jon is preoccupied with news from the south. Maester Aemon sympathizes and reveals a shocker. Simon and Mackelly continue their watch. Chapter Review: Jon has burned his hand in finally killing off Othor. While he's nursing it, Lord Commander Mormont presents him with a sword. It is the family sword of the Mormonts, it too was burned but the Valyrian steel survived. The new handle replaces the bear with a direwolf. Jon decides to keep the name, Longclaw, as it works as well for a wolf as a bear. Even better news for Jon is that Alliser Thorne has been sent to King's Landing to make the case for more troops, with the help of Jafar Flowers' trusty and un-decomposing hand. Jon is very concerned about the latest rumors from the south: Robb calling the banners and marching south to fight for their father. Jon is summoned to help maester Aemon feed his ravens. The old man reminds Jon of his vows. Jon and a delegation from the Night's Watch find the bodies of Othor and Jafer Flowers near the Godswood. They bring them back to Castle Black for examination, but Othor's story is not quite done yet. Jon and Ghost save Lord Commander Mormont, which is a good job, because Jon had been very naughty. The boys discuss Jon's failings. Chapter Review: Jon, Sam, and the senior members of the Night's Watch find the bodies that Ghost discovered. They are rangers from Benjen Stark's party. Sam goes all CSI: They seem to have been dead a while, but they haven't rotted. Mormont is troubled and wants Maester Aemon to examine them, despite the misgivings of some of the men. When they return to Castle Black, a raven has brought news of Robert's death and Eddard Stark's treason. Ser Alliser mock's Jon as not only a bastard but the bastard-son of a traitor. Jon loses his temper and his liberty. But in the night, Ghost wakes Jon. Something is amiss. Tyrion's time at Castle Black has come to an end. But before he leaves Jeor Mormont has a big favor to ask of him. One that Tyrion says he'll do, but think it won't do much good. He also spends some time with Jon, forging a final bond between the pair. On top of examining that, the guys delve into some specifics of the Long Night, and Simon explains how a male bodily function is affected by modern technology. Chapter Review: As Tyrion prepares to leave Castle Black, he attends a goodbye feast, where he manages to offend Ser Alliser Thorne and receive a glowing compliment from Maester Aemon. Afterward, Lord Commander Mormont pleads with him to use his influence to muster more resources for the Night's Watch, namely more better trained men and less dregs of society. Mormont knows winter is coming and a terrible darkness is coming with it, and the Night's Watch isn't ready. Tyrion says he'll do what he can, knowing the rest of the realm will simply laugh at him when he does. Later, Tyrion runs into Jon atop the Wall, and Jon asks him to help Bran during his stop in Winterfell. Tyrion has no clue how, but he promises to try.  Characters/Places/Names/Events: Jeor Mormont - Lord Commander of the Night's Watch.Ser Alliser Thorne - Master-at-Arms of the Night's Watch. Located in the Bay of Ice. Home to house Mormont, with fealty to House Stark.Robert's Rebellion - The war that put Robert Baratheon on the throne and ended the Targaryen dynasty. Support the podcast. Andrew and Manu travel to the Wall in "Baelor" through the eyes of Jon Snow. Since he saved Lord Commander Mormont, the Old Bear gifts him the Valyrian sword Longclaw, a Mormont family heirloom. They talk about the sword and Alliser Thorne, and afterward, Jon learns from Sam that Robb Stark is marching south. Conflicted, Jon is summoned by Maester Aemon, who has a heart-to-heart with him in which he explains his Targaryen roots and the similar hardships he faced watching from the Wall as his house fell to ruin during Robert's Rebellion. Every word from the late Peter Vaughan is chilling and moving, so we try to give this moment its due. It's incredible and chalk full of connections to the story writ large. Let's get to it. Jon talks with Jorah about Jeor Mormont and tries to give him Longclaw back in season 7 (which we also touched upon in our podcast recap of that episode) Helpful video with graphics explaining the Targaryen family tree (Note: The show simplifies it by skipping a generation and making the Mad King the son of Maester Aemon's younger brother Aegon the Unlikely, rather than the grandson) Once more: Manu's appearance on the "Not a Cast" podcast discussing Bran IV Just watch the scene with Maester Aemon and Jon again. It's too perfect. iTunes link Google Play link

Merbear and the Maiden Jer - Game of Thrones

Meredith Geddes and Jeremy Baker rewatch Game of Thrones from the beginning. In King's Landing, Ned tells Cersei he knows all of her children are Jaime's. They soon learn that Robert has been critically wounded by a boar while hunting. A dying Robert names Ned as the "Protector of the Realm" to rule until Joffrey reaches the legal age. Ned sends a message to Stannis, Robert's brother, intending to enthrone him since Robert has no true legal heirs. Ned tells Petyr Baelish about his plan and asks him to gain the loyalty of the City Watch, the only force capable of overpowering Lannister forces loyal to Cersei. After Robert's death, Ned, Baelish and the City Watch confront Cersei and Joffrey in the throne room, where Baelish and the City Watch betray Ned and attack his men. At the Wall, Ned's younger brother Benjen goes missing during a foray to the north, beyond the Wall. Snow and Tarly are picked as stewards, with Jon assigned to Lord Commander Mormont. The stewards swear their loyalties to the Night's Watch. In Essos, Robert's assassin is captured before he can poison Daenerys. Drogo vows to conquer the Seven Kingdoms and give that realm to his son. He starts marching towards Westeros.
