Send us a textJon sends Aemon, Gilly, Sam, and the wrong baby away from the Wall. He appoints Night's Watch brothers to rebuild and command castles along the Wall. Janos Slynt refuses and Jon levies a stiff punishment in response. Stannis approves. Simon and Mackelly admire Jon's transformation - from boy to man.Chapter Review:Jon has met with Maester Aemon, who provided the same advice he once gave to his brother Egg: Kill the boy so that the man may be born. Time to grow up. Jon puts this into practice when he meets with Gilly and explains what she must do to save Dalla's baby - give up her own. She agrees under considerable duress.Next, he meets with Sam who must go to Oldtown and become a maester. Sam is flustered, a Tarly cannot wear a chain of servitude, and he cannot learn to heal because he's scared of blood. Jon reminds him that he's a brother of the Night's Watch, and while he cannot order him to be brave, he can order him to hide his fears. He will go and he'll earn his chain.Lastly, Jon commissions Bedwyck to refit and take command of the abandoned way-castle at Icemark. He'll command 30 men. Bedwyck's a seasoned ranger and Jon knows he'll prove more than capable. He gives Janos Slynt the same opportunity at Greyguard. Slynt refuses. Jon gives him a chance to back down but the oaf won't listen. When Jon calls for his seizure and execution Slynt's friends melt away. Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! The story of A Song of Ice and Fire is perfectly encapsulated in the character of Jon Snow. The conflict, coexistence, and intertwining of these two opposing forces are essential to Jon and his story. This chapter is full of symbols that encourage us to contemplate this struggle of identity within Jon: Maggie examines the contrast between the fiery burns of Jon's right hand and the shaky but honor-bound duties of his left, while Cam reconsiders the direwolf as the Stark's mascot, and suggests that the raven might serve as a more truthful sigil. Maester Aemon remains ever-present in the backdrop of this chapter (and throughout Jon's story) – but as an example, or a warning? Send us a textAboard the Cinnamon Wind, Sam and Gilly mourn the loss of Maester Aemon. The old man succumbed as the ship neared Dorne. Their tears bring them into each other's arms and Sam's vows are history. Simon and Mackelly sprinkle rose petals in the bathtub and try to light a scented candle.Chapter Review:Samwell Tarly eulogizes Maester Aemon to the crew of the Cinnamon Wind. The Summer Islanders honor their elderly and their funeral rites involve drinking and love-making. The news of the dragons that Xhondo provided put a spring in Aemon's step, but it couldn't last and as the ship made its way around Dorne, he succumbed after a period of sporadically lucid dream and prophecy. Part of which was a realization that the Prince Who Was Promised is in fact Daenerys. Drunk on rum, Sam and Gilly make love in the women's section of the boat. Sam has fleeting regrets about his vows, but they're swept away by his feelings for Gilly. The next day the regrets are in ascendancy, and he avoids Gilly all day. Sam has paid for passage with the books intended for the Citadel, and with his labor. But the captain assures him that the Citadel shan't miss out - he'll sell them the books and make a healthy profit from them. He uses the excuse of work to avoid Gilly but eventually he's taken aside by the captain's daughter Kojja who tells him to go to Gilly or swim. Maester Aemon was on the Wall for 67 years before passing at the grand age of 102. This episode covers the ~35 years he lived in the south, and this was a particularly interesting time… He was born during the era of Blackfyre Rebellions, the Great Spring Sickness, Bloodraven, King Aerys I, Aemon's own father King Maekar and of course - Dunk & Egg. Send us a Text Message.Sam tries to find the increasingly flighty Dareon and someone who knows something about dragons - to fulfill the dying wish of Maester Aemon. He gets bruised knuckles, a lungful of canal water, but he does meet a sailor who knows about the dragons. Simon and Mackelly share his pain.Chapter ReviewSamwell Tarly is in desperate straits in Braavos. Gilly is inconsolable, Maester Aemon is dying, and Dareon is MIA. Between overreaching on their accommodation, paying for passage to Oldtown that they missed because of Aemon's ill-health, and the cost of a doctor to visit and tell them that a 102-year-old man with a nasty cough is probably dying - they've nothing left for food and fire.Dareon can make coin with his singing, but he promptly spends it on drink and women. He has no idea why Gilly keeps crying, and even she cannot blame him for wanting to be elsewhere. Aemon wants to hear more of dragons. He remembers them. Sam thinks that is an exaggeration, but Aemon insists that he and his brothers always dreamed of dragons. Sam braves the night and almost gets into a fight with a couple of wannabe-bravos. He's saved by a young girl selling cockles, who calls herself Cat. Sam finds Dareon in a brothel and gets into a fist fight. He's thrown unceremoniously into the canal, where he almost drowns before being saved by a sailor Xhondo. He's a Summer Islander and a mate aboard the Cinnamon Wind. He knows about these dragons and he'd be happy to share his story.Characters/Places/Names/EventsSamwell Tarly - Brother of the Night's Watch, friend to Jon Snow. Sam is miserable aboard the ship headed for Braavos. Gilly is inconsolable and he's seasick. He can't understand her tears until Maester Aemon points out that she left her own baby at Castle Black, and that she's nursing Dalla's child. Simon and Mackelly try to keep down their breakfast.Chapter Review:Samwell Tarly is seasick aboard the Blackbird. He takes solace in his companions' hopeful futures: Gilly will be a maid at Horn Hill, Dareon will recruit for the Night's Watch using his singing, and Maester Aemon will retire at the Citadel, safe from Melisandre's fires.Gilly and her baby are miserable, rarely leaving their cabin. Sam's fear of the sea dates back to his father Randyll Tarly's harsh swimming lesson. This voyage is only his second, the first being a traumatic trip to the Arbor where he was bullied and rejected as a foster child by Lord Paxter Redwyne.Dareon complains about Gilly's distress. Sam defends her, understanding her fear of the unfamiliar ocean. Maester Aemon reminisces about his voyage to the Wall with Ser Duncan the Tall. Aemon enjoys the rain but becomes ill from exposure.Violent storms batter the ship, intensifying their misery. The sailors blame their bad luck on having a woman aboard. When Sam asks Aemon for a remedy for Gilly's distress, the maester reveals her sorrow is due to grief, not fear. Gilly's baby is not her own; she left her child at Castle Black and took Dalla's baby instead. Lord Commander Jon Snow orchestrated this swap to protect the child from Melisandre's fires.Sam is horrified and questions his involvement in making Jon Lord Commander. As the sea briefly calms, Dareon mocks Sam's prediction of more storms, calling him craven. Within, Jon tells Sam that she was begging for Mance's life on behalf of Val, but Mance's crimes are unforgivable even if Stannis and Melisdanre didn't have an eye on Mance's royal blood for their magic. Mackelly and Simon start drawing up a transition team.Chapter Review:Jon Snow spars in the yard of Castle Black with Iron Emmett. They are accompanied by the current vote-getters for Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. King Stannis has had enough of waiting for the brothers to agree on a leader. He wants this wrapped up today. Stannis says he needs to rebuild the castles to garrison a force to stop the Others' attack. Before leaving, Maester Aemon asks to “see” Lightbringer. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Jon gets a reprieve from the ice cell and noose that Thorne and Slynt had promised. Hooray! It's so he can go on a suicide mission to assassinate Mance Rayder. Boo! But at the last second redemption comes from an unlikely source. Simon and Mackelly consider the new power structures at the Wall.Chapter Review:Jon is lowered down the north face of the Wall in a cage. It beats the tiny ice cell in which he'd been held for the last 4 days. Thorne and Slynt's plan to hang him had been foiled by Maester Aemon. But they've found a sure-fire alternative. He's to go parlay with Mance Rayder, murder the King Beyond the Wall in the middle of his army, and then make it back alone to Castle Black - this will prove his loyalty.Tormund guides him through angry faces - none are pleased to see the turncoat back in black. Mance's woman Dalla is about to give birth. Mance himself is relatively sanguine about Jon's return. He never trusted Jon enough to tell him that they had found the fabled Horn of Winter in the Frostfangs. Mance says that the Night's Watch will let the wildlings pass through the Wall or the horn will be blown in three days, and they'll pass through the rubble instead.Jon concedes that the Night's Watch might consider this, if Mance and his people bend the knee. But Mance won't promise that. Seeing an impasse, Jon looks for ways to carry out the assassination. But before anything happens, an army attack the wildlings. It's Stannis coming west from Eastwatch, and he routes Mance's forces with ease. During the chaos, Dalla goes into labor. Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. In the episode, Brienne of Tarth and Podrick Payne attempt to make contact with Sansa Stark. In Meereen, Daenerys Targaryen clashes with the nobles of Meereen following Barristan Selmy's death, but later agrees to marry Hizdahr zo Loraq. In Old Valyria, Tyrion Lannister and Jorah Mormont are attacked by stone men. At the Wall, Stannis Baratheon prepares to leave Castle Black and march on Winterfell, and Jon Snow frees Tormund from captivity so that he can lead Jon to the wildling camp at Hardhome. We're on for another episode of Talkin' Thrones as well as another midpoint, Season 5, Episode 5, entitled "Kill the Boy." The title being a reference to Maester Aemon giving Jon his last bit of advice to kill the symbolic boy and become the man, essentially yet another way of describing Jon's growth and maturity from embittered bastard to leader of men. The theme of maturity seems to be a prevalent one, with the characters suffering the consequences of their actions, while the holes continue to show as the season stretches on. Jon makes a decision that divides the Night's Watch in two: to bring the Wildlings south of the Wall. Stannis also makes a decision that seems doomed to fail to march his soldiers south to Winterfell, a stark contrast from the books that Dom & Pat discuss in length. In Meereen, Daenerys tries to make everyone happy. In Winterfell, Sansa discovers Theon in his new state as she prepares for her forthcoming wedding to Ramsay. Tyrion & Jorah journey through the ruins of Valyria on their way to Meereen and are attacked by Stone Men in an awesome sequence that results in a giant zombie cliche. Hold onto your valium, and avoid falling caskets, people. This week, the sibs cover a delightful little romp, Frank Oz's 2007's 'Death at a Funeral.' Hosting an ensemble cast of the highest caliber, this movie spurred a handful of remakes -- one of which includes (Eden's boyfriend) Peter Dinklage as the same role that he plays in this film. Honorable mentions go to the amazingly physical Alan Tudyk and a crotchety Maester Aemon. In the second and final segment of the show, Eden blind pitches three movies with Game of Thrones actors for episode 40.Hosts: Eden Robards, Sam RobardsInstagram: storageroommovieboomTwitter: storageroompodEmail: storageroompod@gmail.com

Qhorin Halfhand and his crew arrive at the Fist of the First Men. They've seen some action but gained valuable intelligence. Mance Rayder is seeking some magic to bring down the Wall. Three small groups will scout ahead and do what they can to prevent this. Mackelly and Simon long for the comforts of Castle Black. Chapter Review: Jon Snow is roused from sleep by horns of the Night's Watch. One blast means that it is rangers returning. Qhorin Halfhand has arrived with 100 men from the Shadow Tower. There are injuries and missing horses. The Halfhand recognizes Jon, he knew Ned and Ned's father, and Jon shares the Stark look. Mormont and Qhorin discuss what to do. Intelligence suggests that Mance Rayder has gathered a significant host, but that it comprises as many women and children as fighting men. Also that he might be seeking some device in the Frostfangs that would allow him to breach the Wall. Even if his plans are more worldly, he, as a former brother of the Night's Watch, knows the strengths and weaknesses so he poses a risk. Mormont considers re-garrisoning some of the abandoned castles along the Wall. Meanwhile, Qhorin will take a handpicked crew into the Frostfangs to find the truth of what's going on, and if necessary put a stop to it. Jon gets the call. The Night's Watch arrive at the Fist of the First Men, an ancient fort. Mormont decides to wait there as it is a good spot for friends to find them, and equally a fine place to keep an eye on their enemies. Ghost acts weird and leads Jon to a cache of dragonglass weapons. Mackelly and Simon feel the keenness of the edges. Chapter Review: The Night's Watch reach the Fist of the First Men. A rocky outcropping that pierces the canopy of the Haunted Forest. It was used as a fort in ancient times, and it is very defensible. Ghost is very unhappy as they climb towards the summit, and Mormont tells Jon to let the direwolf run free. Ghost does not need a second invitation. The position is advantageous, with steep slopes and basic walls, but Jon is concerned that without a water source they could not survive a siege. Mormont orders cisterns to be dug and water brought up from a nearby stream. That will keep the men busy. Mormont wants the rangers to stay close, not crossing the Milkwater River to the west, beyond which are the Frostfang Mountains, which according to Craster are where the Wildlings have gathered under the banner of Mance Rayder. Jon is worried that this limits their ability to find his uncle Benjen, but Mormont points out that it's easier for one man to find three hundred than the reverse. Plus, they need to wait somewhere conspicuous so that Qhorin Halfhand and his men from the Shadow Tower will find them. Ghost continues to freak out and Jon eventually follows him down the hill where they discover a significant cache of dragonglass weapons wrapped in a Night's Watch cloak that doesn't seem very old. It's time people, for the first major event of this series that changed television forever. People, tonight, Professor Pat & I bid goodbye to poor old dead Ned Stark! We break down everything that happened in this monumental penultimate episode of Season 1! From Robb making a deal with the devil with the newly introduced Walder Frey, to Jon having a frank but necessary conversation with Maester Aemon that foreshadows his upcoming decision; to Daenerys being shown what happens when she trusts strangers; to Tyrion experiencing his first battle (and being knocked out) only to discover that Robb pulled a fast one on them and has captured Jaime. It all results in the shocker to end all shockers, with the death of Ned Stark. Poor Ned Stark, who had been waylayed and warned about what he was getting himself into from the moment he stepped foot in King's Landing, couldn't read the writing on the walls. The ironic thing is that when Ned dies, he's finally coerced into breaking his precious honor for the supposed safety of his daughter but also for the realm, but loses his head anyways when another player enters the game who has no conception of how it's played. Joffrey's decision to execute Ned announces him as a player in the game and sets the realm on a collision course as the sides are drawn and people begin preparing for war. The Night's Watch visit Craster's Keep. Craster provides some information, but one of his pregnant daughter-wives recruits Jon to rescue her from her fate. Jon doesn't think they can help. Simon and Mackelly ponder Gilly's future. Chapter Review: The Night's Watch arrive at Craster's Keep. Lord Commander Jeor Mormont warns all not to interact with Craster's wives. The keep is awful, little more than a midden heap. Jon Snow joins Mormont in the “hall.” The squalid building stinks, and Craster sits in the only chair. Mormont quizzes Craster about Benjen Stark, but he's not been through these parts. The last crows Craster has seen were Waymar Royce and crew. Their host knows why the villages are empty. Mance Rayder has been inviting wildlings to join him. He has intel about the King Beyond the Wall and trades it for a new axe. Outside, Ghost terrorizes a young pregnant girl named Gilly. Jon calls him off. Jon then sets up a tent and makes his own food so that he owes Craster nothing. Later Gilly approaches Jon and ask him to take her when he leaves. If her baby proves to be a boy, Craster will give him to the Others. Jon feels bad, but he cannot help. As the Night's Watch leave for the Frostfangs following the map that Sam created with Craster's help, Jon asks Mormont about Craster's sons. Mormont admits that the Night's Watch know that he gives the sons up to the woods. But they don't have dominion over him. The Great Ranging has found a fourth abandoned wildling village under a great weirwood tree. There is no sign of struggle or clue as to their motivations. Mormont sends word to Maester Aemon via one of Sam's ravens and the ranging continues north. Mackelly and Simon try to keep warm. Chapter Review: The wildling village is deserted. Only some charred human bones remain within the mouth of the weirwood tree that shades the entire village. Ser Jeor Mormont wonders why the wildlings burn their dead, but Jon Snow has a pretty good idea. This is the fourth abandoned village they've found. So Mormont pens a message for Maester Aemon. Jon delivers the message to Sam, who is supervising the ravens. He's trying to teach them to talk. Sam is warming to the ranging, as there don't appear to be any wildlings around. That which reassures Sam is troubling to everybody else. Jon and the Old Bear discuss what Benjen Stark would have done had he found the villages deserted, and they conclude that he would have continued on to try to solve the mystery. This gives Jon some hope. Their force will soon be swelled to 300 when they rendezvous with Qhorin Halfhand's men from the Shadow Tower. In the meantime, the trek north continues. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Jon decides his future lies south of the wall. He rides out to join Robb in his fight. He's prevented from his oath-breaking by his friends, who ride after him and drag him back. Jeor Mormont announces that the Night's Watch will march north of the Wall to figure out what's going on, and Jon better jolly-well come along. The boys prepare for winter. Chapter Review: Jon Snow saddles up and, ignoring Sam's pleas, heads south to join his brother Robb Stark. He does have a few doubts about the reception his brother will give him. As Lord of Winterfell, Robb might feel the need to behead Jon for oath-breaking. Grenn, Pyp, Toad, Halder, and Matthar catch up with him and, by being unarmed and unarmored, they shame Jon into returning with them. As he serves Mormont breakfast, he's plotting his next escape. But Mormont reveals that he knows his men, and had set a watch on Jon. He's going nowhere. Mormont uses the dastardly trick of logical argument to convince Jon to stay. Is Jon such a great warrior that he would tip the war in Robb's favor? Has Jon paid any attention to the portents at the Wall, you know, like the dead rising? The realm's real fight is right here, and right here Jon might actually make a difference. The Night's Watch will sortie north of the wall to find Benjen Stark, to gain intel on Mance Rayder (the King Beyond the Wall), and to learn the truth about the Others. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Former Lord of Winterfell. Executed by King Joffrey Baratheon for treason. Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Recently sworn brother of the Night's Watch. Samwell Tarly - Brother of the Night's Watch. Heavy-set and cowardly. Attendant to Maester Aemon. Friend to Jon Snow. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Jon gets a pardon and a shiny new sword from Jeor Mormont. His buddies are all excited but Jon is preoccupied with news from the south. Maester Aemon sympathizes and reveals a shocker. Simon and Mackelly continue their watch. Chapter Review: Jon has burned his hand in finally killing off Othor. While he's nursing it, Lord Commander Mormont presents him with a sword. It is the family sword of the Mormonts, it too was burned but the Valyrian steel survived. The new handle replaces the bear with a direwolf. Jon decides to keep the name, Longclaw, as it works as well for a wolf as a bear. Even better news for Jon is that Alliser Thorne has been sent to King's Landing to make the case for more troops, with the help of Jafar Flowers' trusty and un-decomposing hand. Jon is very concerned about the latest rumors from the south: Robb calling the banners and marching south to fight for their father. Jon is summoned to help maester Aemon feed his ravens. The old man reminds Jon of his vows. Jon doesn't think Aemon understands, but the maester reveals that he is Aemon Targaryen so, yeah, he's had a few family setbacks that he has had to endure in his time at the wall. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Erstwhile hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and deceased King Robert's closest friend. Currently languishing in a King's Landing cell for treason. Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Recently sworn brother of the Night's Watch. Samwell Tarly - Brother of the Night's Watch. Heavy-set and cowardly. Attendant to maester Aemon. Friend to Jon Snow. Ser Jeor Mormont - Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Ser Alliser Thorne - Master of Arms for the Night's Watch. When is it okay to break an oath? How do we deal with the tension between honor and duty on the one hand versus love and doing the right thing on the other? This episode is essentially a conversation about life philosophy, and we tried to answer difficult questions such as those. Specifically, we did this by examining the concepts of oaths, honor, duty, and love in the hit HBO series Game of Thrones. If you have not seen Game of Thrones and don't plan to, this should still be an interesting conversation about some deep life philosophy. However if you do plan on watching Game of Thrones, **THIS IS YOUR SPOILER ALERT** . We do spoil many plot points in our discussion, so go finish the series first and then come back and listen! Everyone's favorite Season 1 Character, Ned Stark, was a loyal beast. Northern men are known for their loyalty, but Ned was a different breed, and why was that? Maester Aemon once said, "Love is the Death of Duty" and Ned is a prime example of this. Jakob and Andrew break down how honorable Ned was, and how that cost him his head.

Jon and a delegation from the Night's Watch find the bodies of Othor and Jafer Flowers near the Godswood. They bring them back to Castle Black for examination, but Othor's story is not quite done yet. Jon and Ghost save Lord Commander Mormont, which is a good job, because Jon had been very naughty. The boys discuss Jon's failings. Chapter Review: Jon, Sam, and the senior members of the Night's Watch find the bodies that Ghost discovered. They are rangers from Benjen Stark's party. Sam goes all CSI: They seem to have been dead a while, but they haven't rotted. Mormont is troubled and wants Maester Aemon to examine them, despite the misgivings of some of the men. When they return to Castle Black, a raven has brought news of Robert's death and Eddard Stark's treason. Ser Alliser mock's Jon as not only a bastard but the bastard-son of a traitor. Jon loses his temper and his liberty. But in the night, Ghost wakes Jon. Something is amiss. They trace the trouble to Mormont's quarters, where Othor is up and about - and up to no good. Jon and Ghost manage to defeat him with fire. Hopefully regaining the Lord Commander's good graces. Jon receives great news that Sam will indeed be joining him in taking his Night's Watch vows. Less joyful that Jon doesn't get the job he wants or expects. The boys take their vows while Ghost plays a macabre game of fetch. Mackelly and Simon, whose watch began 49 episodes ago, thank the latest watchers on the wall. Chapter Review: Somehow Jon beats Sam to breakfast, but maybe Sam was weighed down by news that he'll be taking Chett's place as steward to Maester Aemon. Jon is understandably pleased with himself. They hurry to the sept where the Night's Watch bigwigs are gathered to welcome their newest brothers. Mormont assigns each of them to a role. Everyone goes pretty much where you'd expect, apart from Jon who is mystifyingly assigned to the Stewards as Mormont's attendant. Jon gets mad. His friends point out that he is being groomed for leadership and he should stop his moaning. Jon and recently converted Samwell say their vows before the Old Gods in a weirwood north of the wall. They are welcomed to the brotherhood by a few crows who accompanied them, but the reverie comes to an abrupt galt when Ghost trots into the circle carrying an unidentified human hand. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. After some time pondering other possibilities for his life, Jon gets an idea in his head to fix Sam's problem. Simon and Mac step you through the chapter and share ideas and insights as they go. Chapter Review: Jon and some of his fellow Night's Watch recruits are graduating from training under Ser Alliser Throne. As the boys whoop it up, Sam is all but excited. He's being left in the care of Ser Alliser, without his friends to protect him. That's a recipe for disaster.Jon, worried about Sam, take a ride down the Kingsroad with Ghost to clear his head. While out, he realizes that he could just keep going and be back in Winterfell in no time. Instead, he turns back to Castle Black to pay a visit to maester Aemon. After cajoling his way past maester Aemon's steward, he explains to Aemon that if he doesn't intervene and have Sam pulled from training, Sam will surely be killed. Tyrion's time at Castle Black has come to an end. But before he leaves Jeor Mormont has a big favor to ask of him. One that Tyrion says he'll do, but think it won't do much good. He also spends some time with Jon, forging a final bond between the pair. On top of examining that, the guys delve into some specifics of the Long Night, and Simon explains how a male bodily function is affected by modern technology. Afterward, Lord Commander Mormont pleads with him to use his influence to muster more resources for the Night's Watch, namely more better trained men and less dregs of society. Mormont knows winter is coming and a terrible darkness is coming with it, and the Night's Watch isn't ready. Tyrion says he'll do what he can, knowing the rest of the realm will simply laugh at him when he does. This week, we talk about: - The mysterious letter Princess Deria Martell sent to Aegon the Conqueror - Alliser Thorne being (wait for it) an asshole - How Jon gives it all for his brother, man - Maester Aemon as a character of growing significance - A most excellent metaphor: "a chain needs all sorts of metals, and a land needs all sorts of people." - Yet another clue for R+L=J - Is Chett justified in his quest for revenge against Jon and Sam? Andrew and Manu travel to the Wall in "Baelor" through the eyes of Jon Snow. Since he saved Lord Commander Mormont, the Old Bear gifts him the Valyrian sword Longclaw, a Mormont family heirloom. They talk about the sword and Alliser Thorne, and afterward, Jon learns from Sam that Robb Stark is marching south. Conflicted, Jon is summoned by Maester Aemon, who has a heart-to-heart with him in which he explains his Targaryen roots and the similar hardships he faced watching from the Wall as his house fell to ruin during Robert's Rebellion. Every word from the late Peter Vaughan is chilling and moving, so we try to give this moment its due. It's incredible and chalk full of connections to the story writ large. Let's get to it. Jon talks with Jorah about Jeor Mormont and tries to give him Longclaw back in season 7 (which we also touched upon in our podcast recap of that episode) Helpful video with graphics explaining the Targaryen family tree (Note: The show simplifies it by skipping a generation and making the Mad King the son of Maester Aemon's younger brother Aegon the Unlikely, rather than the grandson) Once more: Manu's appearance on the "Not a Cast" podcast discussing Bran IV Just watch the scene with Maester Aemon and Jon again. It's too perfect. iTunes link Google Play link

How many times have you repeated an oath, a promise, or clicked yes on terms of service? Our lives, not unlike the lives of the characters on GoT, are filled with oaths and promises. But how important are they really? And has that importance changed over time? What impact have oaths had on our lives and in the forseeable future? Also, Mark on Maesters takes a closer look at the legendary Maester Aemon of Castle Black. Arielle Dundas joins us to better understand what all this swearing means. Its another circus of a podcast.. so listen along with us!
Meredith Geddes and Jeremy Baker rewatch Game of Thrones from the beginning. The Stark army arrives at the Twins castle; Catelyn convinces Lord Frey to let them pass and assist them, in exchange for her agreeing to the marriage of Robb and Arya to Frey's children in the future. Robb sacrifices 2,000 soldiers in a confrontation with the Lannister army, to capture Jaime. In a public hearing, Ned confesses to treason and publicly affirms Joffrey is rightful heir. However, rather than sentencing him to the Wall as had been negotiated, the vengeful Joffrey has him decapitated, while Sansa, and Cersei and other counselors object futilely. Sansa watches her father die, and Arya is present in the crowd. At the Wall, Jeor Mormont gives his family sword to Jon in gratitude, and Maester Aemon reveals to Jon that Aemon is a Targaryen. In Essos, Drogo's wound becomes septic and his death imminent. Daenerys convinces a slave woman to use blood magic to save him. The woman tells everyone to leave the tent and stay outside until the spell is over. Daenerys goes into labor, and Jorah brings her into the forbidden tent seeking aid.
No boys were killed in the making of this episode, but Maester Aemon did use the episode title “Kill the Boy” as a metaphor for how Jon Snow needs to become a man. Now if only Dany can become the woman she is supposedly meant to be. This week, our discussion gets heated as Ricky ... The post Game of Thrones Podcast #35: “Kill the Boy” appeared first on PopOptiq.
