Send us a textJon watches as Mance Rayder and the Horn of Joramun are consigned to the flames. Stannis displays Lightbringer and the free folk are invited to come through the Wall, to bend the knee, and to get a bowl of onion soup. Mackelly and Simon fear that Stannis is not earning their loyalty.Chapter Review:Jon Snow watches as Mance Rayder is dragged to his death. The former Brother of the Night's Watch and King Beyond the Wall is a broken man desperately pleading for his life and disavowing his kingship. He's put in a cage above a pit of kindling. She burns it in the pit, and the flames reach up to Mance.Acting on Jon's orders, several of his men loose shafts to put their former brother out of his misery. As the smell of burning flesh fills the courtyard, Stannis unsheathes Lightbringer, brighter than ever, and the gate through the Wall is opened. The Free Folk are allowed through - the promise of soup and safety from the terrors of winter convince most. But some resist.Stannis has them burn weirwood branches to show their conversion from the Old Gods to R'Hllor and to take the knee before him. All this was against Jon's advice. But Stannis is more interested in loyalty than love.Later, Jon discusses with Clydas the passage that Aemon left for Jon, which describes Lightbringer's heat. Stannis' sword is cold. Send us a textJon sends Aemon, Gilly, Sam, and the wrong baby away from the Wall. He appoints Night's Watch brothers to rebuild and command castles along the Wall. Janos Slynt refuses and Jon levies a stiff punishment in response. Stannis approves. Simon and Mackelly admire Jon's transformation - from boy to man.Chapter Review:Jon has met with Maester Aemon, who provided the same advice he once gave to his brother Egg: Kill the boy so that the man may be born. Time to grow up. Jon puts this into practice when he meets with Gilly and explains what she must do to save Dalla's baby - give up her own. She agrees under considerable duress.Next, he meets with Sam who must go to Oldtown and become a maester. Sam is flustered, a Tarly cannot wear a chain of servitude, and he cannot learn to heal because he's scared of blood. Jon reminds him that he's a brother of the Night's Watch, and while he cannot order him to be brave, he can order him to hide his fears. He will go and he'll earn his chain.Lastly, Jon commissions Bedwyck to refit and take command of the abandoned way-castle at Icemark. He'll command 30 men. Bedwyck's a seasoned ranger and Jon knows he'll prove more than capable. He gives Janos Slynt the same opportunity at Greyguard. Slynt refuses. Afterward, he talks with Melisandre who gives him an ominous warning. Simon and Mackelly interpret her meaning.Chapter Review:Ghost races along the Wall in the night. As he runs, he senses his packmates in their various locations around Westeros. Jon Snow wakes in Castle Black realizing that he was warging Ghost in the night. He dresses and sees the unsigned grant from King Stannis sitting on his desk. This won't be an easy day.Jon finds Stannis and Melisandre in the King's Tower. The king is angry over another rejection letter from a northern house to his call for their support. This time it's 10-year-old Lyanna Mormont who tells him that House Mormont will support only the King in the North, whose name is Stark. Jon tells Stannis that only Mance Rayder can bind the wildlings to the king. Stannis knows but still can't spare the man's life. He is an oathbreaker. Stannis asks if Jon has signed the grant giving Stannis all of the empty Night's Watch castles. Jon hasn't, the ask is too high. Jon suggests that the Night's Watch provide the leaders for the castles and Stannis provides the garrisons, the need not Take the Black. Stannis rejects the idea. Melisandre walks Jon out. Outside she tells him that she has seen him in the flames with enemies all around. She sees ice, blood, daggers, and cold. Jon is summoned by King Stannis. The king offers Jon his dream come true; the title of Lord Stark of Winterfell. Stannis also plans to let the wildlings through the Wall, if they bend the knee. Jon agrees with the wildling plan but needs time to think about being legitimized and made lord of Winterfell. Simon and Mackelly consider shopping for castle-warming gifts.Chapter Review:Jon Snow spars in the yard of Castle Black with Satin. Melisandre interrupts; King Stannis wants a word with Jon. Stannis tells Jon he's heard much about him. Jon confirms some facts and dispels some rumors. The bottom line is that he never turned his cloak. The king believes him. Stannis knows Janos Slynt and knew Ned Stark. Stannis reveals that he plans to let the wildlings through the Wall, as long as they bend the knee and take R'hllor as their true god. The king explains that he's here to fight the true enemy: the Great Other. They will need the wildling's help in that fight.Stannis then tells Jon the primary reason he sent for him. The king doesn't need another sword in the Night's Watch. He needs the North. There's no better way to rally the North than through a son of Eddard Stark. He plans to legitimize Jon, making him Jon Stark the Lord of Winterfell. It was a dream of Jon's when he was young, but he never wanted harm to come to his siblings. However, he's likely the last of them alive. But there's another issue: he's taken The Black. Melisandre says his vow is meaningless, since it wasn't said to R'hellor. The final detail of the plan is that Stannis wants to marry Jon to the wildling Val. Jon asks for time to consider the offer.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Jon gets a reprieve from the ice cell and noose that Thorne and Slynt had promised. Hooray! It's so he can go on a suicide mission to assassinate Mance Rayder. Boo! But at the last second redemption comes from an unlikely source. Simon and Mackelly consider the new power structures at the Wall.Chapter Review:Jon is lowered down the north face of the Wall in a cage. It beats the tiny ice cell in which he'd been held for the last 4 days. Thorne and Slynt's plan to hang him had been foiled by Maester Aemon. But they've found a sure-fire alternative. He's to go parlay with Mance Rayder, murder the King Beyond the Wall in the middle of his army, and then make it back alone to Castle Black - this will prove his loyalty.Tormund guides him through angry faces - none are pleased to see the turncoat back in black. Mance's woman Dalla is about to give birth. Mance himself is relatively sanguine about Jon's return. He never trusted Jon enough to tell him that they had found the fabled Horn of Winter in the Frostfangs. Mance says that the Night's Watch will let the wildlings pass through the Wall or the horn will be blown in three days, and they'll pass through the rubble instead.Jon concedes that the Night's Watch might consider this, if Mance and his people bend the knee. But Mance won't promise that. Seeing an impasse, Jon looks for ways to carry out the assassination. But before anything happens, an army attack the wildlings. It's Stannis coming west from Eastwatch, and he routes Mance's forces with ease. During the chaos, Dalla goes into labor. Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Still no rest for the wicked. Jon and his Black Brothers continue to repel the wildlings. But reinforcements on this side of the Wall spell bad news for Jon. Simon and Mackelly share their fears.Chapter Review:Morale is running low for Jon Snow and his Night's Watch brothers, as they defend the gate against the wildlings. The handful of brothers eat, sleep, and fight on top of the Wall, while Mance Rayder can throw limitless fresh troops against them. Mance's latest twist is a huge rolling shelter that can shield many wildlings from attacks from above. The Black Brothers named the contraption “the turtle.” Jon has his men drop barrels of ice and rocks on the turtle and send the wildlings scurrying back to the safety of the forest.Jon then returns to his little chamber in the King's Tower for some much needed sleep. When he wakes, four unfamiliar men stand over him. They lead him to Ser Alliser Thorne and Janos Slynt. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Jon Snow and his wildling associates get up-close and personal with the Wall. It's a long, dangerous vertical journey, fraught with peril at every step. Jon ponders his future, and whether or not it includes Yigrette. Finally, he gets some of the intel he was tasked with acquiring. Simon and Mackelly wait for the ladder to be dropped.Chapter Review:Jon Snow sees no sign of Ghost, when he emerges from the cave he and the wildlings have been using as a campsite. He does see the Wall looming ominously in front of him. Jarl and his climbers are tasked with getting to the top of the Wall, in order to help the rest of the group make their ascent. Styr has sent scouts east and west to watch for Black Brothers. However, there's been no sign of the Night's Watch thus far.Jarl and his men make the slow, arduous climb up the Wall, aided by landscape and the forest's encroachment on the Wall. While Jon watches the men climb, he wonders what comes next for him. Does he join the wildlings fully, run back to Castle Black at his first opportunity, or take Yigrette and run away from all they know.Up on the Wall, disaster strikes when a large section of the Wall sloughs off, taking Jarl and several other men with it. Hours later the remaining climbers reach the top, drop down rope, and pull up huge ladders. The rest of the group climb the ladders to scale the Wall. When Yigrette reaches the top, she tells Jon of her frustration that they were unable to find the Horn of Winter in the Frostfangs to bring the Wall down.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Jon Snow says a fond farewell to his best friend before meeting with the top brass on the wildling expedition. He gives up some inside information about the Night's Watch but then gets called out when he tries to over-inflate their numbers. He meets up with Yigrette in a private cave and the pair do what they do best, twice. Mackelly and Simon can't help but blush.Chapter Review:Jon Snow knows he can't take his direwolf Ghost over the Wall with him, when his wildling raider party starts their climb. He asks Ghost to meet him at Castle Black. The direwolf takes off, but Jon is unsure if it's to get a jump on their reunion or if he's chasing prey. He's called to Styr and Jarl, the co-leaders of the raiding party. They ask him about the state of certain castles on the west side of the Wall and want to know how often Night's Watch patrols inspect the length of the Wall. Jon reluctantly gives them the information. Styr next asks about the total numbers of the Night's Watch. Jon exaggerates a bit and Jarl calls him out as a liar. After he's dismissed, he goes in search of Yigrette. The pair have been having sex on a very regular basis, and the guilt has weighed on Jon. However, with each time they're intimate, he feels less and less guilty. He finds Yigrette in a hidden cave. The couple discuss Jon having stolen Yigrette. It's a fact Jon disputes, claiming he didn't even know she was a girl when he put the dagger to her throat, on the mountain. The couple get down to business twice before the torch goes out. Yigrette suggests they make their way deep into the cavern system and leave the rest of it all behind.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Member of the Night's Watch. Wir besprechen heute mal nicht HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, sondern die Serie, die George R. R. Martin berühmt machte: GAME OF THRONES! Genauer gesagt sprechen wir heute über Jonas' Lieblingsfolge: DIE WÄCHTER AUF DER MAUER (Watchers on the Wall). The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Jon Snow has a busy day. He discovers that the wildling host contains giants, and lots of them. He and Tormund discuss the pros and cons of Jon bedding Yigrette. Jon gets attacked by an eagle. Finally, he gets called out on his lie about how many of the Night's Watch were north of the Wall. His day seems to be heading toward wrapping up with a tryst with Yigrette. Simon and Mackelly flip on the Do Not Disturb sign.Chapter Review:Jon Snow and Tormund Giantsbane watch a procession of giants mounted on wooly mammoths ride by. After that, the pair make their way toward the front of the host. On the way, Jon tries in vain to explain to Tormund why he hasn't touched Yigrette, despite her clear advances. The idea of a bastard child being an unwanted result of Jon bedding Yigrette is beyond Tormund's comprehension. They catch up with Yigrette. She and some of the other wildlings treat Jon to a rousing rendition of “The Last of the Giants.” After the song fades, Jon is attacked by an eagle that gouges his face with its talons. The eagle heralds the arrival of Rattleshirt, who announces that he's to take Jon to Mance Rayder.Yigrette accompanies Jon to the top of the First of the First Men, where Mance waits. Along the way, they discover the bodies of dead horses strewn about the slope of the hill. Mance wants Jon to tell him true how many Black Brothers there were and who led them. Jon hesitates but does as commanded. Three hundred men, led by Jeor Mormont. Mance thinks their war is won, if they get to the Wall before Mormont does. But there's still the matter of Jon's lying. Yigrette announces that she and Jon have been intimate under Jon's new cloak. Mance decides to send the love birds along with Jarl and Styr over the Wall. Yigrette tells Jon that doing is better than saying, so Jon needs to find another place for Ghost to sleep tonight.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. The next phase of Qhorin Halfhand's plan begins, as Jon is marched through the enormous wildling encampment and meets Mance Rayder. They bond over not really belonging. Mackelly and Simon wonder if the old crow might be a bit too trusting.Chapter Review:Jon Snow and Ghost are escorted through the wildling encampment on the banks of the Milkwater. Jon cannot count the cookfires. The numbers are extraordinary. With his training he does notice that the structure and defenses are pitiful. Even 300 brothers of the Night's Watch could inflict incalculable losses on the wildlings, unless they tighten things up.He's shown into Mance Rayder's tent and mistakes Styr for Mance. The king-beyond-the-wall turns out to be the musician. Rattleshirt repeats his misgivings about Jon. Mance tells Jon that they've met before. Most recently when disguised as a singer, Mance entered Winterfell while King Robert Baratheon visited. Mance describes his desertion when he was saved by a wildling woman who repaired his tattered cloak with red silk. On arrival back at the Wall, he was reissued the regulation black cloak. So he left.In return, Jon concocts a decent cover story, Mance would have seen where Jon was seated at the feast, a row after the dogs. Mance buys it and welcomes Jon into the fold.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Member of the Night's Watch. Do you like bazookas and I mean REALLY like bazookas? Well this is the movie for you. Chuck Norris stars as Matt Hunter, retired CIA agent and America's only hope when his soviet arch nemesis bands all of America's enemies together (not dissimilar to Mance Rayder in GoT) to take of the US of A. The invasion never really leaves south florida but according to the news, the entire democracy is teetering on the knife's edge...thank your lucky stars that Chuck is there to brave all sorts of dangers: Racist bars, fan boat assassins, grocery store riots, reporters, just driving down the street, fake military police, and rocket launcher duels all to save the US (or at least Miami) from falling into anarchy. Also, Chuck has a pet armadillo in this movie...I don't know what to do with that, just going to leave it here.
We've reached the end of another season of Game of Thrones, and if you ask Dom, the point where Game of Thrones officially drops off in quality. Season 4, Episode 10, entitled "The Children" is the end of a lot of our major character's arcs and also really a major ending point for a lot of the storylines we've been following for the last four seasons. Despite the Red Wedding occurring at the end of Season 3, Season 4 is the official end of a Storm of Swords, and also a pretty great encapsulation of everything that the fourth season was setting out to do, which is prepare us as the audience for the next phase of these character's journeys. Jon negotiates with Mance Rayder, Stannis arrives at the Wall, Daenerys is forced to imprison her dragons, Tyrion kills his father and Shae before escaping King's Landing with help from Jaime & Varys, Cersei finally reveals the truth to Tywin, Bran reaches the Weirtree and meets the Three Eyed Raven and Arya leaves Westeros for Braavos after witnessing the fight between Brienne and the Hound. All of these result in major changes for our characters that follow them all the way through to the end of the series, which is exactly what Pat & Dom are going to do as they begin the recap of the final four seasons in the build-up to the series finale. It's another much anticipated battle episode as we cover the penultimate episode of Season 4, arguably one of the best episodes of the entire series, "the Watchers on the Wall." Directed by Neill Marshall, who also directed Season 2's Battle of Blackwater, this episode covers the battle for the Wall between the Night's Watch and Mance Rayder's wildling army. Dom & Pat break down this episode, the tragic amount of deaths of fan favorite characters, how this episode is a terrific transition for these characters into the next phase of their journey as they evolve from soldiers into leaders, as well as how much of the story is in the writing rather than the action. Jon and company head into the Frostfangs. Jon spies on the wildlings through Ghost's eyes. Qhorin Halfhand and his crew arrive at the Fist of the First Men. They've seen some action but gained valuable intelligence. Mance Rayder is seeking some magic to bring down the Wall. Three small groups will scout ahead and do what they can to prevent this. Mackelly and Simon long for the comforts of Castle Black. Chapter Review: Jon Snow is roused from sleep by horns of the Night's Watch. One blast means that it is rangers returning. Qhorin Halfhand has arrived with 100 men from the Shadow Tower. There are injuries and missing horses. The Halfhand recognizes Jon, he knew Ned and Ned's father, and Jon shares the Stark look. Mormont and Qhorin discuss what to do. Intelligence suggests that Mance Rayder has gathered a significant host, but that it comprises as many women and children as fighting men. Also that he might be seeking some device in the Frostfangs that would allow him to breach the Wall. Even if his plans are more worldly, he, as a former brother of the Night's Watch, knows the strengths and weaknesses so he poses a risk. Mormont considers re-garrisoning some of the abandoned castles along the Wall. Meanwhile, Qhorin will take a handpicked crew into the Frostfangs to find the truth of what's going on, and if necessary put a stop to it. Jon gets the call. The Night's Watch arrive at the Fist of the First Men, an ancient fort. Mormont decides to wait there as it is a good spot for friends to find them, and equally a fine place to keep an eye on their enemies. Ghost acts weird and leads Jon to a cache of dragonglass weapons. Mackelly and Simon feel the keenness of the edges. Chapter Review: The Night's Watch reach the Fist of the First Men. A rocky outcropping that pierces the canopy of the Haunted Forest. It was used as a fort in ancient times, and it is very defensible. Ghost is very unhappy as they climb towards the summit, and Mormont tells Jon to let the direwolf run free. Ghost does not need a second invitation. The position is advantageous, with steep slopes and basic walls, but Jon is concerned that without a water source they could not survive a siege. Mormont orders cisterns to be dug and water brought up from a nearby stream. That will keep the men busy. Mormont wants the rangers to stay close, not crossing the Milkwater River to the west, beyond which are the Frostfang Mountains, which according to Craster are where the Wildlings have gathered under the banner of Mance Rayder. Jon is worried that this limits their ability to find his uncle Benjen, but Mormont points out that it's easier for one man to find three hundred than the reverse. Plus, they need to wait somewhere conspicuous so that Qhorin Halfhand and his men from the Shadow Tower will find them. Ghost continues to freak out and Jon eventually follows him down the hill where they discover a significant cache of dragonglass weapons wrapped in a Night's Watch cloak that doesn't seem very old. The Night's Watch visit Craster's Keep. Craster provides some information, but one of his pregnant daughter-wives recruits Jon to rescue her from her fate. Jon doesn't think they can help. Simon and Mackelly ponder Gilly's future. Chapter Review: The Night's Watch arrive at Craster's Keep. Lord Commander Jeor Mormont warns all not to interact with Craster's wives. The keep is awful, little more than a midden heap. Jon Snow joins Mormont in the “hall.” The squalid building stinks, and Craster sits in the only chair. Mormont quizzes Craster about Benjen Stark, but he's not been through these parts. The last crows Craster has seen were Waymar Royce and crew. Their host knows why the villages are empty. Mance Rayder has been inviting wildlings to join him. He has intel about the King Beyond the Wall and trades it for a new axe. Outside, Ghost terrorizes a young pregnant girl named Gilly. Jon calls him off. Jon then sets up a tent and makes his own food so that he owes Craster nothing. Later Gilly approaches Jon and ask him to take her when he leaves. If her baby proves to be a boy, Craster will give him to the Others. Jon feels bad, but he cannot help. As the Night's Watch leave for the Frostfangs following the map that Sam created with Craster's help, Jon asks Mormont about Craster's sons. Mormont admits that the Night's Watch know that he gives the sons up to the woods. But they don't have dominion over him. The Great Ranging has found a fourth abandoned wildling village under a great weirwood tree. There is no sign of struggle or clue as to their motivations. Mormont sends word to Maester Aemon via one of Sam's ravens and the ranging continues north. Mackelly and Simon try to keep warm. Chapter Review: The wildling village is deserted. Only some charred human bones remain within the mouth of the weirwood tree that shades the entire village. Ser Jeor Mormont wonders why the wildlings burn their dead, but Jon Snow has a pretty good idea. This is the fourth abandoned village they've found. So Mormont pens a message for Maester Aemon. Jon delivers the message to Sam, who is supervising the ravens. He's trying to teach them to talk. Sam is warming to the ranging, as there don't appear to be any wildlings around. That which reassures Sam is troubling to everybody else. Jon and the Old Bear discuss what Benjen Stark would have done had he found the villages deserted, and they conclude that he would have continued on to try to solve the mystery. This gives Jon some hope. Their force will soon be swelled to 300 when they rendezvous with Qhorin Halfhand's men from the Shadow Tower. In the meantime, the trek north continues. So here we are, the start of season 3. Welcome back, everyone! In King's Landing, the Tyrells are on the scene and Margaery is charming the pants off of everyone in sight, much to Cersei's annoyance; Daenerys is quickly going places as she sails to Astapor with bigger dragons; we finally meet the now-mythical and much-discussed Mance Rayder beyond the Wall; and, well, not much happens at Harrenhal but we still visit on our season premiere round-up.

Jon decides his future lies south of the wall. He rides out to join Robb in his fight. He's prevented from his oath-breaking by his friends, who ride after him and drag him back. Jeor Mormont announces that the Night's Watch will march north of the Wall to figure out what's going on, and Jon better jolly-well come along. The boys prepare for winter. Chapter Review: Jon Snow saddles up and, ignoring Sam's pleas, heads south to join his brother Robb Stark. He does have a few doubts about the reception his brother will give him. As Lord of Winterfell, Robb might feel the need to behead Jon for oath-breaking. Grenn, Pyp, Toad, Halder, and Matthar catch up with him and, by being unarmed and unarmored, they shame Jon into returning with them. As he serves Mormont breakfast, he's plotting his next escape. But Mormont reveals that he knows his men, and had set a watch on Jon. He's going nowhere. Mormont uses the dastardly trick of logical argument to convince Jon to stay. Is Jon such a great warrior that he would tip the war in Robb's favor? Has Jon paid any attention to the portents at the Wall, you know, like the dead rising? The realm's real fight is right here, and right here Jon might actually make a difference. The Night's Watch will sortie north of the wall to find Benjen Stark, to gain intel on Mance Rayder (the King Beyond the Wall), and to learn the truth about the Others. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Former Lord of Winterfell. Executed by King Joffrey Baratheon for treason. Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Recently sworn brother of the Night's Watch. Samwell Tarly - Brother of the Night's Watch. Heavy-set and cowardly. Attendant to Maester Aemon. Friend to Jon Snow. Jeor Mormont - Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Maester Aemon - 100-year-old maester of the Night's Watch. Now revealed to be Aemon Targaryen. Benjen Stark - First Ranger of the Night's Watch. Missing north of the wall. Younger brother of Eddard Stark. Ser Jaremy Rykker - Acting First Ranger, in Benjen Stark's absence. Mance Rayder - leader of the Wildlings, self-styled King-Beyond-The-Wall. Ghost - Jon Snow's direwolf. Castle Black - Headquarters of the Night's Watch at the Wall. Support the podcast. Kinsella on Liberty Podcast, Episode 273. This is my appearance as a guest on Episode 302: "Stephan Kinsella Explains Hoppe's Argumentation Ethics", of the Free Man Beyond the Wall podcast, by host Pete Quinones (formerly known as "Mance Rayder"), hosted by The Libertarian Institute. From his shownotes: Many libertarian/anarchists have heard of the concept of Argumentation Ethics as developed by Hans-Hermann Hoppe but have never looked to see what it's all about.
