It is a pleasure to welcome singer-songwriter KANDLE to The Jake’s Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. The British Columbia-born singer-songwriter has been surrounded by music for her whole life. Neil Osborne is the vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the popular Canadian rock band 54-40 and hung out backstage at the band’s various bands and recording sessions. She also formed the Blue Violets with her sister, Coral, and friend and former Lillix member Louise Burns.KANDLE’s debut solo album, Flames, featured songs that dealt with serious topics such as mental health, sexual assault, and eating disorders. For her efforts, she received a Juno nomination and a Prism Prize Award. Throughout her career, KANDLE worked with a plethora of Canada’s renowned songwriters, including Sam Roberts, Coeur de Pirate, and Martin “Youth” Glover. She also received coverage from many media outlets such as American Songwriter, Bizarre Magazine, and Fingers on Bast. On May 28, KANDLE will release Set the Fire. The album is getting buzz as she became one of the first independent female artists to make the cover of Spotify’s “Ready to Rock” playlist. The music video of “Honey Trap,” one of her singles off the highly anticipated album, features both KANDLE’s all-female band: The Wiccs, and actor Keenan Tracey (Bates Motel and The 100). Also, ‘Lock and Load,” another one of Set the Fire’s singles’ music videos, was nominated for a Canadian Independent Video Award. In this edition of The Jake’s Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, KANDLE shared the stories behind some of her songs, including “Honey Trap,” “Misty Morning,” and “Demon,” her most streamed song on Spotify. She also spoke about overcoming obstacles that she faced in her career in the recording industry.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Michaela Slinger over Zoom video! Vancouver based indie-pop artist Michaela Slinger is releasing her debut album Panorama on April 16 via 604 Records and all streaming services. Co-produced by JUNO winner Kevvy (Carly Rae Jepsen, Fake Shark) and JUNO Award nominated singer/songwriter Louise Burns, Panorama takes listeners on a dizzying journey through the first twenty-four years of Slinger’s life. The 18-song debut body of work showcases her natural ability to bear her soul while still utilizing her voice as an additional instrument within each song’s musical framework. You can hear ability on “Lay Down” and “Long Love”, which shows the dimension to her overall sound. Michaela Slinger is a “legendary songbird in the making” (Elevate Music Project) who combines youthful, energetic, harmony-rich melodies with old soul lyricism—think Maggie Rogers meets Joni Mitchell. Michaela has always been musically inclined. By the time Slinger was three—yes, three—she had sung the national anthem at a sold-out NBA game. From there, it was obvious that music was going to be her life’s passion. “Panorama feels like I packaged up 24 years’ worth of my heart and soul and ideas and readied myself to drift it out to sea for whoever happens to float by. It’s an exhilarating and terrifying process that I’m embarking on for my first time. I’m excited for the new places and people it will lead me to, and—I’m sure—to do it all over again soon. I hope it makes you feel something.” Slinger has steadily been building emotional connections with listeners around the world through her 2020 singles “Don’t Wait,” “Tarot,” and her most recent offering, “Make You Sad,” all of which are included on Panorama. No matter your relationship status, these podcasts about all kinds of love and intimacy will warm your heart. Featuring: Death, Sex & Money: "Marcy has had Joe on her mind since she went to the prom with him during her senior year of high school. Earlier this year, Marcy—who's now 69 and divorced—decided to track down Joe. And months after sending him an email, Joe responded. Since August, they've been talking on the phone every day. Marcy says they're in love. And Joe lives only 15 minutes away. But Marcy and Joe... still haven't seen each other. Not even over Zoom." Record Club: "Record Club is a live storytelling podcast that celebrates seminal albums and explores how these albums affect our lives. Hosted by musician Louise Burns, each episode features storytellers telling a true, personal story about how a particular record shaped them." Life Kit: "Sex, genitals, consent, self-touching — it's tricky to talk to younger kids about these topics. This episode helps parents get past the confusion and embarrassment around sex education so they can raise healthy, responsible kids." This Is Love: "In June of 2016, Dion Leonard attempted one of the toughest races in the world—a 155-mile ultramarathon through the Gobi Desert in China. At the start of day two, he looked down and saw a little brown dog chewing on his shoes. Dion and the little dog were about to embark on an adventure that would change both of their lives." Nancy: "At the age of 61, Richard was searching for a boyfriend. But finding love was about more than just getting past the trials of dating. There was also Peter…" (This episode was made in collaboration with another favourite podcast of ours, Other Men Need Help.)
We had the pleasure of interviewing Haley Blais over Zoom video.Vancouver-based breakout artist Haley Blais expertly puts into song so much of what humans are feeling. For years now, Haley has turned out song after song of defiant scream-into-your-pillow bedroom pop anthems, recorded in her actual bedroom. She’s organically earned a significant following and online reputation for her self-deprecating, self-loving balladry sung out in operatic crescendos. This summer finally sees the release of her debut full-length album, Below the Salt via Tiny Kingdom Music.Listen & Share Below the Salt: https://orcd.co/belowthesaltFollowing in the footsteps of Haley ’s successful 2018 EP Let Yourself Go, the young singer-songwriter and classically trained vocalist finds her signature sound maturing into her own distinct voice on Below the Salt. Featuring production from indie favourites Tennis (Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley) and fellow Vancouver artist Louise Burns, the record bursts out of the gate in a flurry of drums and keys, soaring synths have replaced ukulele noodling, and confidence has replaced doubt as Haley belts out rock and roll confessionals by way of Jenny Lewis, Karen Carpenter or Hayley Williams. Her lyrics riff on the joys and banalities of the every day, on the need to break apart and away from an uninspiring life, on radical acceptance, and manifesting a world where you feel proud of yourself and who you’re surrounded by.Below the Salt is a coming of age story that recognizes that there is no real ‘coming of age.’ There are hundreds of instances of recognition and of learning. What do we do when we find them? Well according to Haley , we take them with us. As dissonant guitar strings fire and a bass drum pulses on the single “Rob the Original” Haley softly lulls us with this record’s ethos, “With all these magic moments sparkling/This one’s mine.”We want to hear from you! While I was at Burning Man a few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to camp alongside the team responsible for launching a monstrously impressive white, light-up, fire-breathing dragon art car, named Elektra. Peter has a PhD in Political Economy and now manages large scale art creation for a company called Engineered Artworks out of the Bay Area. | Featured song in this episode is "Storms" by Vancouver based Louise Burns.

This radio art “Rock Story” was produced by Louise Burns in 2010. The text is from a letter she intercepted while working at PolyGram Records in the early 80s. It is based on a piece of fan mail to the group Kiss, written at the time when the group decided to perform without their traditional makeup (1983 – a decision the eventual went back on). This decision upset much of the Kiss Army. This fan mail is the basis for the text. It is performed by Tia Ouimet, Louisa Sage, Detroit Burns and Fortner Anderson as the voice of God. It aired on If You Got Ears and is intro’ed by Alex Moskos.
