Welcome to this week's episode of The Mixed Tape with Scott. I'm your host, Scott Cunningham. This podcast is devoted to the personal stories of living economists, diving into their lives, careers, and the fascinating paths they've walked. This week's guest is Michael Anderson, an economist from the University of California Berkeley's Department of Agricultural Resource Economics. Michael earned his PhD at MIT in 2006 under the mentorship of Josh Angrist, making him part of a broader narrative I've been exploring—the Princeton Industrial Relations Section and the influential lineage of scholars who shaped the modern credibility revolution in economics. In our conversation, we touch on Michael's rich and varied research. We discuss his insights into the returns to college athletic success, delve into his foundational work on the Perry Preschool program and the challenge of multiple inference, and explore the real-world impacts outlined in his American Economic Review paper on subway strikes and slowdowns. As always, though, this episode is much more than just research highlights—it's about Michael's journey through economics, his stories, and the experiences that have defined his path. I hope you enjoy the show!Scott's Mixtape Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Join us for a fun episode as we chat with Ben Vaughn about the art and pitfalls of the Mix Tape, a passion of Bill's and mine. We talk about why we do it, the selection process, transitions, the dreaded fadeout, and the outrage of some devices jumbling the song order thereby ruining—ruining, I tell you—our genius segues. We also discuss old radio DJs, song dedications, teenagers, and nostalgia. Ben talks about how he selects music for his radio show, The Many Moods of Ben Vaughn, his latest project with Relay Shack Records, and a special show he did with the Geator of old-but-never-before-heard song dedications. God does impossible things every day, if we will have the eyes to see. Acts 9:36-41 NLT “ In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor. 37 About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room. 38 Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, “Please come at once!” 39 Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them. 40 Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, “Tabitha, get up.” She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. 41 He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called for the believers, especially the widows, and presented her to them alive. Acts 12:5-17 NLT But while Peter was in prison, the church prayed very earnestly for him. 6 The night before Peter was to be placed on trial, he was asleep, fastened with two chains between two soldiers. Others stood guard at the prison gate. 7 Suddenly, there was a bright light in the cell, and an angel of the Lord stood before Peter. The angel struck him on the side to awaken him and said, “Quick! Get up!” And the chains fell off his wrists. 8 Then the angel told him, “Get dressed and put on your sandals.” And he did. “Now put on your coat and follow me,” the angel ordered. 9 So Peter left the cell, following the angel. But all the time he thought it was a vision. He didn't realize it was actually happening. 10 They passed the first and second guard posts and came to the iron gate leading to the city, and this opened for them all by itself. So they passed through and started walking down the street, and then the angel suddenly left him. 11 Peter finally came to his senses. “It's really true!” he said. “The Lord has sent his angel and saved me from Herod and from what the Jewish leaders had planned to do to me!” 12 When he realized this, he went to the home of Mary, the mother of John Mark, where many were gathered for prayer. 13 He knocked at the door in the gate, and a servant girl named Rhoda came to open it. 14 When she recognized Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed that, instead of opening the door, she ran back inside and told everyone, “Peter is standing at the door!” 15 “You're out of your mind!” they said. When she insisted, they decided, “It must be his angel.” 16 Meanwhile, Peter continued knocking. When they finally opened the door and saw him, they were amazed. 17 He motioned for them to quiet down and told them how the Lord had led him out of prison. “Tell James and the other brothers what happened,” he said. And then he went to another place. Jesus desires that we believe but he is not afraid of our unbelief.

One of the greatest opportunities we have is to link arms across generations to show that Jesus is in pursuit of all ages. Unity between generations makes Jesus go viral. 1 Timothy 4:12-16 - Don't let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity. Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them. Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecy spoken over you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you. Give your complete attention to these matters. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress. Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you. 2 Timothy 2: 1-3 - Timothy, my dear son, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus. You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others. Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. Challenge Now Have a listening conversation with someone of a different generation than you. What do you crave in relationships? What motivates you to follow Jesus? What qualities in someone show you they are actively pursuing a relationship? Do something with someone of a different generation than you. Find out what interests them. Show them something that interests you.

Spiritual maturity is always measured by application. The Talker The Half-listener The Interrupter The Finisher The Assumer The Fixer The Redirector The Relator The Topper The Pouncer Psalm 18:6 ESV - In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears. Psalm 34:17 ESV - When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. 1 Peter 3:12 NLT - The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right, and his ears are open to their prayers. James 1:19 NIV - My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry… Matthew 11:15 NIV - Whoever has ears, let them hear. God, give us ears to hear!
Traditional Worship | Bishop Bob Hayes |The real attraction of the Bible is to be found in the fact that it contains the greatest short stories, essays, philosophies and beauty of thought ever known to mankind. The characters and the mighty acts of God are on display on every page, and for many of us, there are those special stories that have stood the test of time. In this sermon series, which we are calling “Mixed Tape,” our pastors will share their favorite messages from the Bible, allowing us to sample the wide range of expression and inspiration that has been given to us by God as found in the Scriptures.
What words have hurt the most or have helped heal you the most? Words matter more than we could ever imagine. You cannot please everybody. It's not necessary to please everybody. We ultimately live for an audience of one. Romans 8:31 TPT “So, what does all this mean? If God has determined to stand with us, tell me, who then could ever stand against us?”

Walking with Jesus is long obedience in the same direction. What areas in your life do you need to practice long obedience in? How can you keep from beating yourself up when you don't?
Laughter reveals and heals. Genesis 21:6-7 TLB 6 And Sarah declared, “God has brought me laughter! All who hear about this shall rejoice with me. 7 For who would have dreamed that I would ever have a baby? Yet I have given Abraham a child in his old age!” Laughter is a serious matter. Because laughter is a serious matter to our mental health, well-being, and survival, we should do it regularly. Because laughter is a serious matter we shouldn't do it at all if it means laughing at someone or at something that God doesn't find funny.
Mixed Tape (noun): A mixtape is a compilation of music, typically from multiple sources, recorded onto a medium. With origins in the 1980s, the term normally describes a homemade compilation of music onto a cassette tape, CD, or digital playlist.
Enjoy hearing the powerful testimony of how God rescued pastor Alfred from a childhood of immense trauma. Psalm 41:1-4 NIV For the director of music. A psalm of David. 1 Blessed are those who have regard for the weak; the Lord delivers them in times of trouble. 2 The Lord protects and preserves them— they are counted among the blessed in the land— he does not give them over to the desire of their foes. 3 The Lord sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness. 4 I said, “Have mercy on me, Lord; heal me, for I have sinned against you.”
Listen in on some of our favorite things and people. Today after you hear Josiah's story I pray that you recognize and believe that: Your Future is not found in your past, but in your choices. His story is found in 2 Kings 22 & 2 Chronicles 34.

A new man with a new mission, he understood that his future mission in life was to advance ground for God's Kingdom. After completing 6 years of service, Chad went on to author the best-selling book SEAL of God (over 100,000 copies in print). Today, Chad has spoken at over 300 faith-based events, fortune 500 companies, and contributes expert analysis related to military affairs for major news networks. Chad's deepest passion and desire in life is to communicate the life-changing message of the Gospel by drawing from his experiences in the SEAL Teams on and off the battlefield, to convey overcoming a lack of purpose, hope and meaninglessness.

The upcoming Mixed Tape series will be a collection of scripture passages that have moved and inspired the body of Christ over the centuries. In this first message of the series, Seth takes a look at Colossians 3:1-14 and what it means to get our life from being hidden in Christ. We also take a look at our role of choosing to die to the old way of living and not letting it pollute our current reality.
