Interview with NYX – Scoring Dope Girls and Exploring Duality

Sync Music Matters Podcast

This episode of Sync Music Matters is an interview with NYX's  Sian O'Gorman about the scoring of the BBC series Dope Girls NYX is a collective of experimental vocalists and electronic artists based in London. In Greek mythology, NYX is the primordial goddess of the night, born from chaos giving birth to light and day. And it's this duality which inspires their creativity. NYX blend traditional vocal techniques with cutting-edge sound design, and in doing so they craft sonic worlds that bridge the ancient and the futuristic In 2020 their collaborative album Deep England with Gazelle Twin was named one of The Guardian's top ten contemporary albums and in 2021 NYX received Film London's Breakthrough Talent Award. They have just completed their debut TV score for the BBCs Dope Girls due out in the first half of 2025 and are due to release their debut album NYX in March 2025 Some of Sian's musical influences which aren't mentioned in the show include: Her hero Joe Hisaishi "I listen to my Miyazaki film soundtracks almost daily" The Dark Crystal Age of Resistance OST by Daniel Pemberton Mica Levi's Zone of Interest score "My mind was completely blown" Colin Stetson forever! Centred around care, connection, and collaboration, the collective creates immersive sonic landscapes that traverse the full spectrum of human emotion – from the depths of grief to ecstatic joy. Their work balances ritualistic intensity with playful exploration, offering audiences a transformative experience to ground themselves in the power of sound and embodiment. Drawing on influences from psychoacoustics, somatic practices, and experimental sound design, NYX operates at the intersection of composition and improvisation. At the heart of NYX's artistry is a distinct compositional process led by music director Sian O'Gorman. Each piece begins as a deeply personal act of vocal experimentation and layering, evolving into dynamic sonic landscapes shaped collaboratively with performers. This process blends improvisation with precise direction, resulting in music that feels both curated and alive. 00:00:00 Introduction 00:02:00 Interview with NYX - What was your path into music 20:19:06 Under The Skin - Dope Girls and the debut Album NYX 56:16:00 Getting a Taste - What music and art has influenced you? S5E06: Training Talk  The role of post production supervisors in film and television production is receiving a boost through new micro-certifications, crucial to smoothing the way a project moves from preparation to delivery. The certifications are a joint approach from Avid and the organization Post Super, whose founder is the latest guest on the Making the Media Podcast. Gemma Nicholson says there has been a clear gap in the market for training people in the role to be better prepared for the challenges they face. Our Guest this Episode:   Gemma Nicholson   Gemma Nicholson is one of the co-founders of Post Super alongside her sister. The inspiration behind this was a desire to create a platform that post management could tap into for community, information, training, and tools. Post Super is a personal passion project for Gemma, who had spent over 22 years in post production. Gaining a wealth of experience from working on prestigious and diverse projects, such as multiple Harry Potter films and massive high-end episodic television productions like Netflix's The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Gemma was first a sound editor, then a successful post coordinator and supervisor, and it was through her experiences as the latter that she came to fully understand the frustrations and needs of the post management community. Gemma gets excited about the information and training part of Post Super, and she runs multiple courses on post supervision for the NFTS, ScreenSkills, and has recently partnered with Avid Technology to create Avid Post Super Micro-Certifications.   More Resources For more on this topic, check out Avid and Post Super Courses– Get the information on the latest courses available What's New in Pro Tools– Discover the updates in the world's leading DAW What's New in Media Composer – From transcription to Titler+, find out the cool features Contact Us Questions? Then we change from that to another cancelled fandom, The Dark Crystal. We talk about the show and characters, and the tragedy of cancellation. We then pair a Korean and Japanese show together with Squid Game and Alice in Borderland. Kiwi talks about how she discovered these shows, and what her draw is to them. Lastly, we wrap up with cosplay. A showrunner/writer's job does not end with the completion of a script, or even the end of production. In fact, the writing process extends far beyond the page, as a script takes on new life on set, and again in post-production, all the way through to the final cut that ends up on screen. Writers Gina Fattore (Dare Me, Californication) and Javier Grillo-Marxuach (Cowboy Bebop, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance) joined us at Season 12 to explore the lesser-discussed aspects of writing, how writers continue to shape our favorite stories long after the “final” draft, and why writers remain integral to all aspects of TV production. This panel was recorded live at ATX TV Festival Season 12 (June 1-4, 2023) in Austin, TX.PANELISTS:Gina Fattore (Writer / Producer, Dare Me, Californication)Javier Grillo-Marxuach (Co-EP / Writer, Cowboy Bebop, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance)MODERATOR:Ben Travers (IndieWire)SUBSCRIBE to youtube.com/ATXTV for more panels, conversations & events with your favorite TV creatives and casts.FOLLOW ATX TV:Twitter: twitter.com/ATXFestivalFacebook: facebook.com/ATXFestivalInstagram: instagram.com/atxfestival/TikTok: tiktok.com/@atxtv
