WHO KNOWS WHAT EVIL LURKS IN THE HEARTS OF MEN?Thirty years ago this past summer, director Russell Mulcahy (Highlander, Ricochet) presented the answer to that question with a heavily hyped, lavish adaption of the popular radio show and comic strip of the same name from the '30's and 40's.....and audiences didn't seem to care, neither did critics for that matter. However over time, this art-deco fantasy action thriller has garnered a bit of a cult following thanks to it very strong cast, catchy score (from the late, great Jerry Goldsmith) and some undeniably fun images and set pieces. Alec Baldwin stars as Lamont Cranston, millionaire playboy who also moonlights as....The Shadow, fighting crime and getting to the bottom of evil conspiracies throughout his home city of New York. John Lone co-stars as the main villain Shiwan Khan (a distant descendent of Genghis Khan), Penelope Ann Miller also co-stars as mysterious psychic Margo Lane, along with Sir Ian McKellen as her father Dr. Reinhardt Lane. The stacked cast also includes Tim Curry, Jonathan Winters, and Peter Boyle. It's time to find out.....what THE SHADOW knows..... :o See below for a link to the official Taylor Dane video of a truly original song performed for this film's soundtrack:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXpWfd1BNkQHost: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
"The Shadow" is probably the best known radio program... when polls were taken among college students who had never listened to OTR,"Can you name an old time radio show"... about 95% said, "The Shadow!" Series started in 1937 with Orson Welles initially playing the first year of the series. Later Bret Morrison, Bill Johnstone, John Archer, and Steve Courtleigh took on the role of tThe Shadow. Margo Lane was first played by Agnes Moorehead and later Marjorie Anderson, Marion Sharkley, Laura Mae Carpenter, Lesley Woods, Grace Matthews and Gertrude Warner. The series ended in 1954 and thankfully many episodes were recorded and have been preserved. Incidently the phrase, "The Shadow Knows" became part of our vernacular This episode will be stored in "The Shadow" Playlist.

Bill Johnstone stars as Lamont Cranston - or "The Shadow" in the Christmas Eve 1939 thriller entitled "The Stockings Were Hung!" Margo Lane was often played by Agnes Moorehead, not sure if she played the role in this particular episode. The radio program began on CBS radio on July 31, 1930. Frank Readick, Jr was the narrator and it is his voice heard until the series ended in 1954 on the Mutual Broadcasting System. Many people thought the opening and ending of the show was the voice of Orson Welles... it was not. It was Frank Readick, Jr. Orson Welles at the age of 22 was the voice of the Shadow from September 1937 to October 1938. Bill Johnstone had a long run as The Shadow but Brett Morrison had the longest run with 10 years in two separate runs. The Shadow lives in a Playlist by the same name... The Shadow.
The lovely Margo Lane needs an Easter Bonnet that matches her own loveliness. She knows exactly what she wants, a beige hat, with a white bird's wing and a pair of deep red cherries. She finds this exact bonnet at a small haberdashery. But what she didn't know is that as a bonus the hat comes with the nation's atomic secrets. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/iloveoldtimeradio/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/iloveoldtimeradio/support
At 5PM Mutual's most famous program, The Shadow signed on. The show was in its eleventh season on the air in 1948. Andre Baruch handled emcee duties while Grace Matthews played Margo Lane. Bret Morrison was Lamont Cranston. Halloween's episode was called “Murder By A Corpse.” This season's Shadow rating was 13.2. It was Mutual's highest-rated show. As night descended on New York on October 31st, temperatures dropped into the upper 40s and an eerie fog rolled in. Police were ready for mischief as children went trick or treating. The Halloween tradition was still seen by many as an act of begging and vandalism. In response, members of the Madison Square Boys Club paraded through the Lower East Side carrying a banner that read "American Boys Don't Beg.” Politically, Progressive Henry Wallace was making a dent in Harry Truman's campaign. On Election Day, Truman still carried the City, collecting 1.6 million votes to Dewey's 1.1 million, but Henry Wallace received over four-hundred thousand votes. It's this split that allowed Thomas Dewey to narrowly win New York state by sixty-thousand votes, giving the republicans forty-seven important electorates. At home, the Mutual Broadcasting System's prime time programming featured news and music, but at 7PM literature's most famous detective—Sherlock Holmes—took to the air from WOR. Sherlock Holmes peaked on radio between 1939 and 1946 with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce playing Holmes and Watson. They made over a dozen films and their rating climbed to 14.1 in 1942 on NBC. The next year, the entire cast moved to the Mutual Broadcasting System. Petri wine sponsored the series. Famed radio character actor Harry Bartel became the announcer. They remained on Mutual for three seasons until Holmes left for ABC. Basil Rathbone stayed with Mutual to star in a new series called Scotland Yard. Nigel Bruce still played Watson while Tom Conway became Holmes. When the Semler Company discontinued sponsorship in the spring of 1947, ABC canceled the show. That summer Clipper Craft Clothing signed to pay the bills. The program moved back to Mutual with John Stanley as Holmes and Alfred Shirley as Watson. By Halloween 1948 it was airing Sundays at 7PM. As radio audiences changed, Holmes and Watson couldn't keep up. That Spring Mutual canceled the series. ABC revived it for one final season before the last version of an American Sherlock Holmes series departed the air.
From the Library of Sound Volume 125 comes a strange and dangerous visit with The Shadow. Today Your Humble Host dips into the files of September 26, 1943 to find this extra eerie edition of The Shadow. Margo Lane gets into more trouble than she bargained for when she finds herself surrounded by The Gibbering Things. YIPE! Now it's up to the Shadow to find her and prove once again that Crime Does Not Pay.
Welcome to Episode 91 – A Cavalcade of Clips & Work Crews. It is a collection of Norm’s show hours from June 16th and June 25th, 1995. Hope Schauer, Mike Epstein and someone named Ed St. Clair, not to be confused with Eddie LeClair, producing. A lot of the calls heard here are in-progress, a bit choppy, cut short, and unnamed but, as always, just so darn entertaining. It all begins with Louie talking about how radio was changing. We hear from Chauncey and eating rubber chicken in Canada? A caller who entertains with his wife at the Boathouse in Hyannis, the Brandy Barrel in Lynn, and Natalie’s in Danvers. Quick hit from a guest on at 4am from across the pond who ewrote a book on Lorenz Hart. There's some random musical interlude. Then we move to a broadcast from WCCM in Lawrence MA with former WBZ producer Sid Whittaker doing the news! The host was Bruce Arnold and what I believe to be his producer, Eric. There’s some behind the scenes talk about a ‘Countdown to Weather.’ Then a scandal erupted to my ears! They play something called The Birthday Game?! Eric, Sid and a caller take guesses on a couple of celebrity birthdays to be entered to win a gift certificate to The Pasta Shack - We shall return this this later. Next up is Paul Drake doing traffic for Boston’s Business Station, WBNW. That guy sounds familiar. Then some traffic with ‘Paul’ Jack Harte for WBZ We get lots of Norm Show opens throughout this episode. Norm teases an upcoming guest, Phil Kaufman. Some More Jack Harte traffic. Let’s now jump to Norm and Jack talking. I had clipped out an article on The Zipper Lane and the wacky machine that moves the little barriers on the SE Expressway. Norm was fascinated by the whole thing. They have cameras monitoring all of it and this leads to a discussion on all sorts of cable channels dedicated to all sorts of camera feeds. Norm has a particularly good idea that you’ll have to wait to hear. There’s even a mention of the long-lost Store 24. They may have something here since Norm would have never believed there would be a channel totally dedicated to weather (TWC) yet here we are! Norm tells us of another upcoming guest Tom Hamil, editor of Collecting Toys Magazine. Another Jack Traffic report. Let’s take some more calls: Jim from the Burlington, Vermont area Next caller is a musician and soloist. Plays a variety of string instruments. Does comedy and offbeat stuff. Plays a regular gig in Boston on a night when Norm’s not on. He won’t recognize Norm by sight, so he’ll have to do his best work all the time just in case he shows up. During this we hear some wisdom from Norm’s grandfather. Jack Harte in traffic again! A caller complimenting Norm. One from whereabouts unknown, talking about shooting pigeons in the park from 6pm to dusk. We take a moment to understand how to use clothes on the clothesline to find the wind direction? Thankfully this was very ‘brief.’ Next caller, Chris, talking about old time radios, the Antique Radio Association and the N.E. Antique Radio Club, Hosts a program called ‘Let’s Talk Showbiz’ on WOMR down on the Cape in Provincetown. There’s VERY Quick call from Foster Brooks? Next up is Frank, continues the old radio talk tubes and testers Then our old friend Glenn from Brighton is on the line. His friend Eleanor in Quincy is afraid of balconies. Glenn has a foolproof solution you’ll want to hear and maybe even try. There’s some discussion of The Shadow, Kato (Not to be confused with Kato Kalin) and Margo Lane. Hillary from Bu

Adding another episode of the 1937-38 premiere season of "The Shadow" which starred a 23 year-old Orson Welles... it was the only year he played the character of Lamont Cranston (aka The Shadow). Margo Lane was played by Agnes Moorhead. Incidentally the famous laugh and some of the other lines attributed to The Shadow were recorded by the original Shadow - Frank Readick jr. He did the famous laugh by laughing into an empty water glass beside a microphone. It was a cheap way of making a voice sound very different and was often used as part of the sound effects wizardry. This Shadow episode will be in the "Shadow" Playlist on this podcast.
Lamont Cranston and Margo Lane are having tea in his old college gardens when Margo interrupts his daydream to remind him he has to go to the faculty reception tonight. When an old teacher, Professor Kalima considered by Lamont a great scholar and teacher is accused of causing students to commit suicide by his teachings, it is time for The Shadow to investigate. Duration: 25:23 Starring: Orson Welles Broadcast Date: 4th September 1938
Sounds like a real storm is coming up when Annie hears what sounds like little kittens meowing outside and she sends him out to rescue them. But when he goes out he is attacked and killed by what sounds like a pack of wild dogs. Meanwhile Lamont Cranston and Margo Lane are in Louisiana on their way to see Arthur Whittington an old friend of Lamont’s from college who was ridiculed for his strange voice. When come to the end of the road they see a sign which says Whittington Hall, Keep Out. Then Margo hears some meowing like kittens and goes to search for them only to be forced back by giant snarling dogs. . . Duration: 22:50 Starring: Dwight Weist, Margot Stevenson Broadcast Date: 26th December 1937
Bill Johnstone is The Shadow in this 1940 thriller... .The Laughing Corpse. Margo Lane is played by Agnes Moorehead. More "Shadow" episodes in the Playlist "The Shadow" on this podcast. Thanks for listening to Heirloom Radio... a different kind of oldies program.
Mr. Orson Welles had a tremendous career in Hollywood as an actor, writer producer and director. His first movie appearance was in 1941 in citizen Kane and the lady from Shanghai, the magnificent amberson and many others. But mr. Orson Welles played as a man named Lamont Cranston and Miss Agnes moorehead played Margo Lane in that show as well. Mr. Orson Welles is still known to this day as the greatest filmmaker that ever lived. Mr Orson Welles passed away on October 10th 1985 at the age of 70. Even though mr. Orson Welles, who played Lamont Cranston (The Shadow) for only one year from 1937-38, stars in this episode of the most remembered radio show ever heard... and that is by people who never heard the show! There is no doubt that in the 16 years of broadcast( 1937-54, this was a tremendously popular show with Brett Morrison and Bill Johnstone and Margo Lane played mostly be Agnes Moorhead. This track features a short introduction of the series... and then the adventure begins. Check our Mystery-Detective-Crime and Suspense Horror playlists for more Shadow adventures... Thank you for listening.
Perhaps the best known character of Old Time Radio, Lamont Cranston was The Shadow. He is never seen, only heard by those living in the world of crime and evil. His true identity was known only by his companion, the lovely Margo Lane. The last line at the end of every episode summed up the purpose of the story... "The weed of crime bears bitter fruit... Crime does not pay! The Shadow knows?" Track features and intro with background on the series followed by "The Phantom of the Lighthouse"... "Lighthouses" were used as the setting in many radio shows that features suspense, mystery, and murder! Thanks for listening. (Photo: Brett Morrison and Grace Matthews)

The Shadow - In September of 1939, a new voice of the Shadow appeared in the form of radio actor Bill Johnstone. Later in 1939, Agnes Moorehead left the show and was replaced by Marjorie Anderson as Margo Lane. The plot lines began to follow the standard formula of Margo Lane being in danger and the Shadow rescuing her from the clutches of evil. Bill Johnstone would be the voice of the Shadow for five seasons, until March 1943. Bret Morrison took over the Shadow role in 1943 for one season. John Archer and Steve Courtleigh took the Shadow role through the 1944-45 season. Bret Morrison then returned to be the Shadow for the duration of the program's run which lasted until December 26, 1954. THIS EPISODE:1938. Syndicated. "Murder On Approval". Sponsored by: B. F. Goodrich Tires. A foreign agent tries to conquer America by infecting the U. S. Army with a secret disease. Orson Welles, Margot Stevenson, Ken Roberts (announcer). 1/2 hour.
THE SHADOW - On July 31, 1930 a sinister voice came over the radio into American Homes. The voice of the Shadow appeared for the first time. In the beginning the Shadow was not a crime fighter. He was a mysterious narrator of mystery tales taken from the pages of Street & Smith's Detective Story Magazine. The publisher Street & Smith began to use radio as an advertising medium to promote their fiction publications. The Shadow was a perfectly creepy teller of tales promoting Street & Smith. This format continued until 1935 when creative differences between Street & Smith and NBC called a halt to the Shadow on the air. On September 26, 1937, the Shadow reappeared on radio with the voice of Orson Welles playing the part. The Shadow was now a full-fledged character on radio, not just narrating and introducing stories. The Shadow had an identity as Lamont Cranston, a wealthy man about town. He was accompanied by Margo Lane, originally played by Agnes Moorehead. Margo Lane was the only person who knew that Lamont Cranston and the Shadow were one and the same. No other agents assisted the Shadow, as did in the Walter Gibson fictional accounts. This radio Shadow had hypnotic power to make himself invisible to those around him and he possessed mental telepathy to read minds. Orson Welles played the Shadow from 1937 through March 1938. The Shadow became the highest rated radio show on the air at that time.
