Ana and Andrea inherited important knowledge from their great-grandmother. She was a wise woman who left the highlands for the coast to secure her family's future. She believed that if you have received any good opportunity to have a better life, you shouldn't forget to open up those opportunities to the people around you and who will come. Ana and Andrea grew up in the village of Chepén, Peru, where the impact of climatic events on their families and community sparked reflection on what can be done to build more unified and sustainable futures. How have Ana and Andrea perpetuated their ancestral knowledge? Why is knowledge sharing important? How do they help local communities take part in nature restoration? When miners arrived in California seeking their fortune during the gold rush of the 1840s and early 1850s, they encountered a place with few existing legal systems. Recently acquired from Mexico, California was truly America's frontier, and when American miners arrived they did what Americans have always done: they held meetings. In We the Miners: Self-Government in the California Gold Rush (Harvard UP, 2022), Seton Hall law professor Andrea McDowell explains the development and working of miners codes and other legal systems put in place during the heady and often violent early days of the California Gold Rush. Before statehood, miners were on their own to construct a version of direct democracy that reflected their values and gave them power to govern, until the creation of state government and the arrival of corporate mining entities. In McDowell's telling, the early days of the gold rush speak to Americans strong belief in democracy and self-governance, and who gets a say in justice when gold is on the line. Dr. Stephen R. Organizations know that DEI work is important work, and it is. But not just because of the racial reckoning in these last two years. One of the biggest challenges diversity, equity and inclusion professionals face is helping organizations to see how far the DEI work actually stretches. This is especially true right now, as some employees are back in the office while others are still working remotely--maybe with no plans to return to the office at all. Workplaces are remote and yet everyone wants to feel like they belong. At the same time, DEI work doesn't happen in a silo and one human resources professional can't be expected to do all the work. It requires buy-in from the executive level, as well as a full time person who has the power to make decisions and make things happen. This week on the podcast, I'm talking with Andrea Tatum, a DEI disruptor and consultant who supports organizations in doing the work and trains other DEI professionals to do the same. We talk about the importance of the DEI role being a top-level role and how to show other executives what work actually needs to be done. Andrea also shares how DEI pros can take care of themselves during this important work and some of the pitfalls that organizations may face if they don't have the right people in these roles.I hope you'll tune in!About Andrea Tatum:Andrea spent her early career as a marketer in non-profit arts organizations including theaters, ballets, & symphonies. She was named one of the most influential women in Atlanta by Rolling Out Magazine for her focus on diversifying audiences.Shortly after moving to the Bay Area, she pivoted into Tech as a product marketing and events manager. And while her entire career has been about creating more diverse and inclusive spaces, she pivoted into a full-time DEI Career after running several of Tableau's DEI programs.
